AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
Good morning, gang. It's Friday and we we so excited. Second cup of coffee in hand... Which question shall I take?
Cameron Diaz (Feeding Grapes)
A Rod for Crawford? Positions aren't the biggest issue.
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
I'd stick with A-Rod here. I don't see his numbers getting any worse...
Better season going forward...Lilly or Peavy?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Lilly. I don't think we'll see the Peavy we remember until next year.
Mike (Great White North)
Ricky Romero @Twins is a 5 on Daily Notes. Is this because of the injury? Does he have a better stat line today than Lohse @Cincy?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Not to sound like a broken record, but the Rating is sheer math based on three years of stats. Put the numbers into the computer and that's what gets spit out. And if you looked at DN, you'll have seen I have Kyle slightly ahead of Ricky.
The new closer for the Mariners is?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
It's still League, but certainly wouldn't be surprised to see Jamey Wright get a few late-inning opps.
Sam (North Brunswick, NJ)
Brett Myers - cut bait or bench?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Plenty of other fish in the sea.
drop one: Kubel, Moreland, Y. Escobar
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
If position doesn't enter into it, I drop Yunel.
Hitters vs Pitchers value? Positional scarcity is not a issue here. What value hitter does say a Felix Hernandez warrant? Pedroia?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
If you're talking true value, then Felix (No. 10 SP) is equal to Teixeira (No. 40 Hitter) and conversely Pedroia (No. 100 hitter) is worth Josh Tomlin (No. 40 SP)-- but when you're dealing with other owners and trading, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
gordon for rajai. even?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Gordon is way better than Rajai, IMO. However, if you're going to need to catch up in steals, you may end up getting value. I'd try to buy at a lower price.
Sell high on Shields? Would going after a top-tier closer like Marmol or Wilson be getting enough in return?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Shields has been a top 10 pitcher so far, and I do not think he stays nearly that high on the list... so getting a top closer if you can is certainly prudent.
Norman (New York, NY)
Just a thought. Have you guys ever considered a Steals tab in the Daily Notes listing the weakest throwing catchers? Or stats with successful attempts against slower pitchers?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
If you look at the Hitters tab and see the column steals, that's exactly what is taken into account.
Who would you rather have in a standard league; Jayson Werth or Jay Bruce?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Bruce for me. Don't like, and have never really liked, Werth.
Ivan Drago (Soviet Union)
Good time to target Ubaldo in a trade? Or is something wrong with him
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
I don't think he'll ever be as good as last year, but some improvement is certainly to be expected. After all, if I can change, and you can change, maybe Ubaldo can change!
A quick ranking: Hosmer, Smoak, Trumbo
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I'd go in that order, though news of no Kendrys closes the gap a bit for Trumbo.
Concerned about Rasmus' lack of HRs despite his improved hitting?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
He's top 40 as it stands now. If the power comes and the average dips a bit, he's not going to slide much, so I'm not too worried here.
Given the last 2 weeks, shouldI be starting Rios over Quentin at this point?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
I'm still on the CQ tip here.
Joyce, Boesch, or Melkman?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Melky will fall back a bit... I go Joyce, Melky, Brennan.
Beachy a quality rating of 8 against Philly tonight? How is that?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Small sample size... the young'uns without extensive track records see the rating lean to the extremes a bit. Take it with the necessary grain of salt, and remember even a guy with a "1" can hurl a shutout on any given day.
If you had J. Bautista, what would it take to get him from you? Hanley? More? Less?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Probably nothing... I think there's room for growth ahead and he's already a top 5 hitter.
Anything about CarGo that has you concerned he WON'T turn it around?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Depends on what you mean by turns it around. I see a little bit more power and the average bumped up to .270 or so, but nothing like last season.
RE: Beachy Question (NYC)
Hey AJ... I got Hamels AND Beachy... if it was you... who would you start? Both?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Why not? Pitchers can't both throw seven shutout innings? Of course they can...
David (The Colony, TX)
CI help, Laroche or Laporta?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
LaPorta for me. Not really close.
Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhes (unknown)
Happy Friday the 13th !!! Looking to use my tools and "cut" a SP. Which one should go: Garza, G.Gonzalez, Pinieda or norris. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I'd send Bud packing right now, assuming your bloodlust must be quenched.
Domonic Brown, do you see a call up soon?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Assuming his thumb injury isn't serious and the catcher situation fixes itself, then it shouldn't be too much longer.
streaming a start. who do like today? Bumgardner, Dempster, Gorzelany, or Humber
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/dailynotes?page=mlbnotes110513Read it. Know it. Love it.
Joe (Ann Arbor)
Which Cleveland OF for remainder of season: Grady or Shin Soo?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Choo. I have very big injury concerns with Grady.
When is a good time to make a fold/all-in decision for a season in a keeper league? How bleak does it have to be to start amassing keepers in May?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Depends on how far you're sliding in categories per week... that's the trend you should be analyzing to figure out if you need to simply tweak, or blow it up.
Better team name; Bumpin' Utleys or Shin-Soo Been Gone?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
At least I'd never heard the latter before... Kelly Clarkson reference, notwithstanding, it wins.
Should I tough it out with Brian Roberts, or start looking elsewhere?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Practically no difference so far between Roberts and Pedroia. I'd stay firm.
CATCHER HELP: Ride out the Russell Martin slump or drop him for Iannetta?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Given the supporting cast, I'd hang with him a bit longer... but I'd move him for Avila.
Better player to have on my bench. Abreu, prado, or aviles.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
If you're looking for a guy with the best chance to have a good day that one time you start him, it's Aviles.
Since you mention Avila....what is a comparable OF you'd give up to get him? Coghlan too little? Ethier too much?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Ethier definitely too much, Coghlan just about right. Rather send a Werth, Boesch or Maybin.
You starting Oswalt next week?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
I'm not even convinced the Phillies are going to start him next week. Had some velocity woes in rehab start...
Doc Brown (Hilldale)
Ted Lilly or Randy Wolf? Will either work out their early season struggles?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
I think Lilly has better chance, but neither is more than a spot-starter until they do.
Ryan (Little Rock, AR)
There are other players in MLB than Ted Lilly
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
No, actually, today everyone will be called Ted Lilly. Didn't you hear? Kind of like Jackie Robinson Day when everyone wears 42.
Please tell me you feel the same about Kelly Johnson as you do Roberts...
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
No, I'm a little more down on him. Not expecting much of a comeback.
Just our of curiosity AJ, how does a pitcher with a QR of 7 (Weaver) make it to the top of the daily rankings ahead of guys given a 9 (Verlander)- Don't get me wrong, I rely on the rankings for guidance like a Jedi turns to Yoda, but I'm just trying to grasp the logic to improve my own decision making...
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
A better ERA and WHIP, and let's face it - Verlander's odds of pulling a Vandermeer? Not great. It's hair-splitting at that point, and totally opinion based.
Rank 'em, Ted Lilly, Ted Lilly, Ted Lilly.
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Too close to call, but I think Lilly narrowly edges out Lilly and Lilly.
Lost Kendrys: Best pick up in a vacuum: Moreland, Homer Bailey, Gordon Beckham?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Dillon Gee, is he the next Ted Lilly? Ownable in 14 team league?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I'd say he's worth a flier in that deep a league. Certainly shouldn't be going anywhere.
Ted Lilly (LA)
Thoughts on AJ Burnett? On my league's waiver wire and I'm not quite sure why.
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Probably a fear of too many walks and a rebound of BAA. I'd bet the guy who cut him is a big BABIP proponent who overreacts to that stat.
Jeff S. (Vermont)
What are your main resources (i.e. websites, news sources, etc.) for forming your opinions on players?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Watching the games. There's no way to see them all - but there's no better way to shape your own opinions than to see it for yourself.
AJ, I know you were one who was high on Arencibia preseason. Are you still holding tight on him or try to deal for a more consistent option?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Certainly the BA has disappointed, but the slugging is still there. I'm not going to hold him if there is a better option, but I'm not crying either.
Theodore Flower (Somewheremagical)
Barney or Jeter?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Both are dinosaurs, but I'll give Derek a few more weeks.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the cuckoo! We'll be back next week for more Q's, and of course, there's always the Twitter for all your Ted Lilly needs. Until then, thanks for joining the chat - good luck, and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
