Postgame Chat: Game 2 of the NBA Finals with D'Arcy Maine
D'Arcy Maine (12:08 AM)
Wow. Wow. Wow. I'm still not even really sure what to say after that finish. Like many of you I would guess, I had completely ruled the Mavs out and watched Heat fans gleefully toss their white seat covers on to the court. And then Dallas went on a 22-5 run in the last 6:18 and made my life, and this series, considerably more interesting. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Send 'em in...

Does this become an instant top 5 playoff comeback game? Can we put Dirk right behind Bird on the "give him the #$$7!# ball in the 4th quarter" list?
D'Arcy Maine (12:13 AM)
Yup. Dirk just skyrocked on that list tonight. I'm trying to even figure out a way to properly describe what he just did but am struggling to give it justice. Carlisle just compared him to Bird (again) in his press conference and I'm sure we'll hear a number of people say it over the next three days.

do you think now after the miraculous win by dallas that the momentum has shifted to the mavericks?
D'Arcy Maine (12:14 AM)
I think so, NY. The Mavs now head home with an even series for three-straight games. They have a great home crowd and will enter Sunday's game with a huge surge in confidence and a new energy.

do the mavs really stand a chance?
D'Arcy Maine (12:15 AM)
Did you see any of the last six minutes? I would say so.
jdun sf ca [via mobile]
All aboard the dirk bandwagon! The train is now boarding! And it stops for no one
Chenier Gardner(lubbock, TX) [via mobile]
How do we describe that? Dirktastic? ReDirkulous?
D'Arcy Maine (12:17 AM)
I'm kind of partial to 'The Heart of Dirkness' myself. But I'll gladly accept any of these Dirk-themed words.
Jason Memphis,Tn [via mobile]
Simply amazing.. The series doesn't start until a team wins on the road and it just started with a piece of history! This could easily swing enough momentum for the mavs to capture an elusive championship
tony milwaukee wi [via mobile]
You said it right D'arcy, "WOW!!!" With the Heat crumbling with 6 mins togo in the 4th, this was unbelievable and pathetic at the same time. Do you think the Heat have a chance as the next 3 games are in Dallas?
D'Arcy Maine (12:18 AM)
I definitely think so. In my mind, this changes everything. The Mavs are in a great place right now as the series shifts to the Big D.
Will, NYC [via mobile]
What happened to Lebron tonight? Where was the "closer" everyone talked about last game?
D'Arcy Maine (12:20 AM)
I know it, Will. LeBron had a grand total of 2 points in the 4th quarter. I'll admit I had started to believe he had become the fully developed player who could edge out opponents at the end of the game. And now I'm rethinking that thought. Two points is just completely unacceptable for the star player.

Great comeback! I still think the 2-3-2 format is garbage though
D'Arcy Maine (12:23 AM)
From a basketball standpoint, I agree with you about the 2-3-2 format being less than ideal. As a person travelling for all of the games, I can't tell how much better that is. A 2-2-1-1-1, especially when you can't get a direct flight, is very much appreciated for the non-basketball players involved.
Austin, TX [via mobile]
Given the lackluster support the Heat have received from their (weirdly quiet) home crowd, is it even fair to think that the Heat enjoyed "home court advantage" in this series? Given the Mavs' road record this year, and the quiet Heat crowd, could the Mavs plausibly win a Game 7 in Miami?
D'Arcy Maine (12:26 AM)
The Heat fans can be pretty loud and supportive when the team is playing well. There were moments tonight where I found myself surprised at their noise level. However, when the going got tough, they were relatively absent. I don't think their loudest though will compare to the Dallas crowd. With this Mavs team, anything is possible. As we clearly saw tonight.

We are all Nowitznesses.

Bosh described Dirk's game winning drive as "the move he always uses.". What does that say for the Heat defense?
D'Arcy Maine (12:30 AM)
That's exactly how Bosh described Dirk's winning move and added he, 'got caught up trying to cut off his drive, and that's what he wanted' and then said the play cost the team 'two points'. I'm most confused about Bosh's lack of ownership on his poor defensive play to ultimately end this game. They clearly weren't prepared in the final minutes as a team and I'm sure they'll be watching a TON of film of that 4th quarter until Sunday.
Lebron (Miami) [via mobile]
Don't call us Cryami tonight, Coach Spo isn't selling us out again.
big fan, new jersey [via mobile]
What about a 3-3-1 scenario?
D'Arcy Maine (12:33 AM)
I don't think it would really be fair for one team to open with three-straight home games. Seems pretty one-sided. Also, wouldn't be fair for the other market as they potentially could only host one game.
chase labudda dallas tx [via mobile]
Can we nickname the 4th quarter Dirk No-miss-ki?
Dirk Nowitzki Dallas TX [via mobile]
Call me the GERMANator?
jd [via mobile]
Its all about the money. Did they come back against the heat tonight or is rge beginning of the hype to get you more interested. Money money money.
D'Arcy Maine (12:35 AM)
I love a good conspiracy theory (and am more than a little excited to do some Kennedy research while in Dallas) but I don't think LeBron and Co. were thinking about money in the final minutes of that game. These are just two good teams and this could be a very close series that goes the full stretch.
Mavsman 2011 [via mobile]
Did u see Wade flop after he threw up the half court shot at the buzzer. He even grabbed his eye and threw his hands up...
D'Arcy Maine (12:36 AM)
It's the NBA. I've come to accept people flopping when they feel like they have the slightest prayer for getting a call.
Ms85 somerset ky [via mobile]
How much of a chance do you think the mavs have of closing his series out with 3 straight wins at home now?
D'Arcy Maine (12:38 AM)
I could realistically see the Mavs winning two of the three. I'm just not convinced they can win three straight against this Heat squad. LeBron and Wade are just too talented and I don't think will just roll over after this loss.
Lowery [via mobile]
If i was a reporter i would've asked spoelstra if anyone was crying. Good idea?
D'Arcy Maine (12:40 AM)
Won't lie, Lowery. That thought crossed my mind too. Thankfully, I wanted to make sure I would be allowed back in the building if the series comes back to Miami.
Reading, PA [via mobile]
Epic! And to think I almost switched over to the Spelling Bee after Wade hit that 3 to put them up by 15....
D'Arcy Maine (12:40 AM)
That would have been a B-A-D idea. Get it?
Austin Labudda Dallas [via mobile]
how insane was it that all the drama over the splint on Dirk's left hand had no problem in his left handed layup game winner?
D'Arcy Maine (12:42 AM)
Hate to say this because I'm considered part of this media circus but in this 24-7 news cycle, I think sometimes stories are made out of a nothing or something relatively small. Dirk seemed fine yesterday at practice and continued to tell people he felt fine and those who saw him the shootaround echoed that. But it was a good talking point and I think it just spiraled a little bit out of control before the game because it was a compelling storyline.
Dusty [via mobile]
Cleveland is rocking tonight!
KD, Jersey [via mobile]
D'arcy. I know everyone is Dirk crazy (myself included), but why aren't more people talking about this rejuvenated Marion. This guy is playing excellent ball on both sides of the court...
D'Arcy Maine (12:45 AM)
Great point, KD. Dirk was the one that won this game in the final minutes but Marion had 20 points and 8 rebounds tonight and gave another consistently impressive performance. He just didn't steal the show like his German teammate. He's a huge part of the team's success though and I would think he'll get more credit once people have a little time to get over the final few minutes of this game.
mac ytown ohio [via mobile]
Cavs 4 the mavs!!!! Finally happy 2 watch sports center...do u think dirk and company would come 2 a parade in Cleveland?
D'Arcy Maine (12:47 AM)
I normally would say something like, 'it's still a tied series' or 'let's not jump the gun just yet' but I'm happy Cleveland gets a happy moment. Enjoy it.
nailbiter Brooklyn, ny [via mobile]
Why does Dallas seem to struggle for the better part of each game in these playoffs?
D'Arcy Maine (12:50 AM)
That to me is the real question (along with 'what the hell happened to the Heat in the last six minutes?') of the night. I really thought the Heat were lucky to be within four so late in the game. They weren't playing like it. I think this win should give them some confidence and I would think we'll see more consistent and balanced effort for four quarters going forward.
Jojo Milwaukee wi [via mobile]
Going into the series, a lot of people were talking about this being a matchup of older veteran players vs younger hungrier players. Does game 2 prove that experience is more important than youth?
D'Arcy Maine (12:52 AM)
It's a good question, Jojo. I think the ultimate outcome of this series could provide the best answer. To me it seems that if it's a close game towards the end, the experience is a huge factor. But if the youth and athleticism can build a big enough lead early on, that should win out.
odds guru, pottstown, pa [via mobile]
I know this means nothing,, but to put this collapse in odds term, when the heat were up by 15 with 6 minutes to go, they were 1/75. Meaning you had to bet $75 to win $1. Just a fun fact.
D'Arcy Maine (12:54 AM)
I love fun facts. Thanks for sending that one. However, most importantly, who would take that bet?
LA fan... [via mobile]
miami is not hollywood, too many stars for their own good?
D'Arcy Maine (12:56 AM)
Do I sense a little bitterness, LA? I kid, I kid. I've wondered all season if the amount of ego on this team would somehow backfire. I don't think that was the reason for their demise tonight but you have to consider what goes on in the locker room.
Dawood [via mobile]
Does Dallas coming back in miraculous fashion prove that they are that good or just got lucky/heat meltdown?
D'Arcy Maine (12:59 AM)
I think it's a combination of both, Dawood. The Heat got a little cocky too early and Dirk and Co. were able to capitalize.
Tom [via mobile]
If you were an nba player is there anyone you would rather play for than mark cuban?
D'Arcy Maine (1:01 AM)
I'm with you, Tom. Have to love that kind of personality and fun spirit. Nice to see an owner in sports who recognizes it's supposed to be fun. Wish he would lift this media ban though. I miss his commentary. Although I don't think his wallet does.
gaithersburg, md [via mobile]
I really hope this is Dirk's year. I don't think his character and remarkable likability is tasked about enough. I mean this guy is an unbelievable talent but he is also an incredibly humble and well spoken gentleman.
D'Arcy Maine (1:04 AM)
I think a lot of people would agree with you there and a lot of people are currently Dallas fans as a result of his play and personality. Not to mention that he stayed with Dallas unlike LeBron and Bosh.
brauneck1 [via mobile]
Dirk and stormy or the Dirk Knight?
Athens, GA [via mobile]
That comeback was truely inspiring. I watched it by myself and was going crazy. I love this game!!
D'Arcy Maine (1:05 AM)
Amen. I'm still so pumped I want to challenge some of the other media to a pick-up game after this chat.
jarrod (MS) [via mobile]
how much of a difference would Caron Butler make?
D'Arcy Maine (1:09 AM)
Good question, Jarrod. Butler would add another dimension for the Mavs offensively. I wouldn't count on him returning in this series though unfortunately. He's still yet to be cleared for contact drills.
Friedrich, Berlin, Germany [via mobile]
NBA, where "Zee big Cherrman" happens...and outrageous lebron-jordan comprisons too. He would never let this happen!!
Covington, GA [via mobile]
You think Wade and Lebron celebrating after that 3 that put them up 15, gave Mavs the spark to win that game?
D'Arcy Maine (1:12 AM)
Anger sometimes is the best motivator. Here's a fun fact for those of you still at the bar looking for a way to score a free bar: Tonight's 15-point comeback marked the 4th time this postseason the Mavs came back from a double-digit deficit to win the game.
MMFL Dallas [via mobile]
Any news on Haywood?
D'Arcy Maine (1:13 AM)
Haywood suffered a strained right hip flexor in the 4th quarter and didn't return to the game. I've yet to hear an update but I'll let you know if I do.
dallas texas [via mobile]
wait. So the next three games are in dallas? Its different for the finals?
D'Arcy Maine (1:15 AM)
Yup. It's a 2-3-2 for the Finals. So you have a week of the media circus coming to your town.
roy ft worth tx [via mobile]
Do you think that maybe everyone got a little ahead of their selves after game one by crowning the Heat as the champs
D'Arcy Maine (1:17 AM)
That's the nature of this, Roy. One game in and we're all acting as if the series is over and now, after tonight's game, the Mavericks are the best thing since sliced bread. We have a very short-term collective memory. Like a goldfish.
chitown [via mobile]
Just happy to see the heat losing tonight. Do you think the whole world wants the Mavs to win or is it just us in the states?
D'Arcy Maine (1:22 AM)
It seems as if just about everyone who is not a Heat fan has become a huge Mavs fan. It's sort of a David vs. Goliath thing. No one wants to see the team expected to win and with so much talent win it. Especially not a team that came together in such a way.
Tom [via mobile]
My roommate has been on the phone for almost an hr with a married woman. Stupid idea right?
D'Arcy Maine (1:24 AM)
Figured I'd end with this one. That can't end well, Tom. It would be like celebrating a victory with seven minutes left in the game. Just not smart.
D'Arcy Maine (1:26 AM)
Thanks to everyone for joining me tonight. So many great comments and questions (and even some entertaining insults about women having no place in sports). I'll be in Dallas for Game 3 doing another pregame and postgame chat. Hope to see you there. Goodnight!
