Tuesday's With Mobile: July Fireworks
John Pez (1:01 PM)
OK, let's start the July Fireworks.
Mike Colorado springs, CO [via mobile]
As a fan I feel robbed by all of the players not in attendence for the MLB allstar game. Do the players who get selected and not go still get there bonus? I dont think they should if they do and the all star games not attened while healthy shouldnt count on their career resume
John Pez (1:08 PM)
Well Mike, I understand how the fans in Arizona are angry at the numerous no-shows at this All-Star Game, although Jeter is the only one without a legit excuse. Bud Selig never rules on these All-Star issues, unlike David Stern who makes it mandatory to attend, even if the player is injured. You can't expect Selig to challenge Jeter. He tried to get Joe Torre to convince Jeter to come, but even that didn't work. Jeter has been to so many All-Star Games and he is coming off an injury that sidelined him for 3 weeks, so I would give him the benefit of the doubt, although it clearly looks bad for baseball that he is not there after recording his 3,000th hit.
delran, new jersey [via mobile]
my name is brad and i have two questions. My first is do u think tiger woods will win at least 1 final major before he retires? And do u think rory will become the next tiger?
John Pez (1:11 PM)
Brad is gearing up for The Open Championship. Well many of Rory McIlroy's colleagues believe he is capable of winning a handful of majors. Tiger Woods' injuries have sidetracked him so much that I think he has to prove he can finish among the top 5 at a major before we could even think about him winning another one.
Steve (Cedar Rapids, IA) [via mobile]
ESPN ranking the U.S. women's soccer victory over Brazil as the 5th-most dramatic in sports history is a complete joke. How does that make it over things like Laettner vs. Kentucky, Immaculate Reception ...? Shouldn't even be top 100.
John Pez (1:15 PM)
Amazing pass, amazing header. Final minute. Certainly qualifies as top 20, but I agree No. 5 is too high. Certainly not better than Laettner vs. Kentucky and the Immaculate Reception. But I thought the finish was better than both the Brandi Chastain goal and the Landon Donovan goal from a soccer perspective
LaMichael James Eugene, Oregon [via mobile]
Am I the preseason Heisman frontrunner?
John Pez (1:18 PM)
Shall we just go with LaHeisman for the nickname.I think the favorites are QBs Andrew Luck and Landry Jones. As far as running backs go, both LaMichael and Marcus Lattimore. Let's not forget Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon.
Edwin, Charlotte, NC [via mobile]
Will the U.S. beat France tomorrow?
John Pez (1:23 PM)
Edwin, France is ranked 7th in the world, is in the World Cup semis for the first time and has 2 players (Marie-Laure Delie and Gaetane Thiney) with 2 goals apiece. They also are coming off a win in penalty kicks. The teams have not met since 2006. That matchup was a 4-1 U.S. win in a game that featured Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx, Carli Lloyd, Christie Rampone and Heather O'Reilly. Americans have also never lost to France (11-0-1). So I guess you gotta go USA, USA
Kyle Boise, ID [via mobile]
Who is ESPN Mobile's college football preseason top 5 teams?
John Pez (1:27 PM)
Josh Barbarotta is our college football guru so I'm sure he will weigh in with his picks. Kyle, of course with Kellen Moore at QB I would have Boise State in the top 5 with Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU and Florida State. I'm sure Oregon can also stake a claim for a top 5 pick.
Kunal (Roswell, Georgia) [via mobile]
usa vs brazil definetely best part of june for soccer fans and maybe all of america because of the spirit the team showed in that match much like the usa mens team last year
John Pez (1:29 PM)
The highlight of the month so far has to be Joey Chestnut. Just kidding. Jeter's 5-for-5, 3000th hit was a home run and the U.S. comeback vs. Brazil have to be neck and neck for the highlight of the month. Of course we all want it to be an end to the NFL lockout before the month is over.
Gary Mathis, TX [via mobile]
Any guesses on the All-Star Game MVP?
John Pez (1:33 PM)
Last year it was Brian McCann with a bases-clearing double. Tonight, Arizona celebrates when catcher Miguel Montero delivers the game-winning hit for the NL. Now that's a longshot.
JR Plainview, TX [via mobile]
Alabama, Texas, LSU, Oregon, Florida not in any specific order.
John Pez (1:35 PM)
JR weighs in with his predictions. Needless to say you're a huge Longhorn fan. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, maybe even Texas A&M should finish ahead of the Longhorns in the Big 12.
Davey [via mobile]
Do you think Jeter had the right to skip the ASG? Or are other players justified in bashing him?
John Pez (1:40 PM)
Yes I think Jeter has played in enough All-Star games and was sidelined by an injury for a long enough period of time this season to have the right to take the 3 days off. Mariano Rivera really did the same thing as Jeter and no one is criticizing Mo. The onus should be on Bud Selig to make a ruling on All-Stars - position players who play on Sunday must at least attend the All-Star Game.
Jake ma [via mobile]
what are the odds that the red sox acquire andre eithier? With drew always hurt we could use the bat to make a deep post season run
John Pez (1:42 PM)
Jake, I think it's more likely the Red Sox would make a run at Carlos Beltran, who is in the last year of his contract. Boston would have to pay off approximately $6 million to Beltran for August and September, but would give up less to the Mets in a trade than they would have to give the Dodgers for Ethier.
D'Arcy Maine (1:45 PM)
Hey gang! Thanks for joining us on a painfully boring sports day. Anyone want to make any Kurt Rambis jokes?
Patrick (Allentown, PA) [via mobile]
Why did it take so long for the T-Wolves to finally fire Kurt Rambis?
D'Arcy Maine (1:46 PM)
I like your style, Patrick. In the words of our esteemed cohort Bill Simmons... KAHHHHHHNNNNN!
Keith (CT) [via mobile]
Did Djokovic's win at Wimbledon signify a changing of the guard in men's tennis?
D'Arcy Maine (1:50 PM)
I'm not sure if it was a true 'changing of the guard' moment, Keith, as I think Nadal still has a ton of titles to win in the next few years. However, I think Djokovic cemented his place with Nadal as the best players in the game and essentially replaces Federer in that category. Would like to think he wins another one or two though before he calls it quits.
Timmy Georgia [via mobile]
Will there be a better play during the ASG than the guy who caught the ball and almost went into the pool yesterday?
D'Arcy Maine (1:51 PM)
Unless one of the players in tonight's game makes a catch while managing to hold their beer and not spill it, I don't think so. And I'm not sure how Selig would feel about that scenario.
Roger H. [via mobile]
How bad do you feel about yourself after reading about the 6-year-old who shot a hole-in-one?
D'Arcy Maine (1:52 PM)
I can't even hit a hole-in-one playing mini golf. I feel lousy. Almost as lousy as Roy Williams felt after his proposal was rejected through the mail.
Gell Paul, MN [via mobile]
If the amateur player who led after the first day of the US Women's Open had won the entire tournament, would nobody win the purse?
D'Arcy Maine (1:54 PM)
The 2nd place finisher would have claimed the 3+ million dollar purse. And Amy Anderson would have kicked herself for maintaining her amateur status.
Jon ct [via mobile]
How do u think jeter and cano will fair the rest of the season
Anthony Federico (1:58 PM)
Jon - Today's attention on both players might be a clue: Derek Jeter has been roundly criticized for skipping the All-Star Game while Robinson Cano receives praise for his sensational performance in the Home Run Derby. Jeter is the face of baseball but clearly on the downslope of his career. Cano is a 28-year old slugger trapped in a second baseman's body.
Billy (Fly Creek, NY) [via mobile]
What's your take on the problems at Kentucky Speedway this past weekend for the first ever Sprint Cup race in Kentucky? Go Kurt Busch
D'Arcy Maine (2:05 PM)
This marks our first-ever NASCAR question in a Tuesday with Mobile chat. Thanks Billy. I'm disgusted that Kentucky Speedway wasn't able to figure out a way to avoid the ridiculous traffic issues they saw this weekend. More than 20K people never even made it to the track after sitting in something like six hours of traffic. Unacceptable. What baffles (or Biffles me... Get it? NASCAR humor)me is that they knew this would be a problem but did nothing about it. Hope NASCAR comes down hard on the speedway and the fans that missed are more than compensated for their disaster of a day.
Lenard Tillery, LA [via mobile]
Do you think LSU has a good chance of beating Oregon
Josh Barbarotta (2:05 PM)
Anytime the Mad Hatter is involved, the Tigers have a chance. The 2011 Cowboys Classic has the potential to be one of the top games all college football season. If LSU can get the Jordan Jefferson from last season's Cotton Bowl, they may have a slight edge. Plus, we all saw what a speedy SEC defense did to Oregon's uptempo spread attack in the national title game. I'm just excited to see Les Miles vs. Chip kelly. Expect the unexpected for sure.
Josh Barbarotta (2:09 PM)
...and just to piggyback off the earlier question about ESPN Mobile's top preseason college football teams: I'll go 1) Alabama 2) Oklahoma 3) Boise State 4) Oregon 5) Virginia Tech. Typically, I'd be weary of a young, inexperienced QB leading a team to a national championship...but Alabama did it 2 seasons ago. Watch out for Logan Thomas and VTech too. Situation is very similar to Auburn's last season.
Guy D'Ambrosia (Greece) (2:10 PM)
Did you hear Bernie Williams' national anthem before the Futures Game? It was sick, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Also, what is your Anthem Power Rankings? Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl has to be No. 1, right?
rob(jersey) [via mobile]
In all seriousness, proposing by mail? Dont care if you're a millionaire, what woman would say yes to that?
D'Arcy Maine (2:10 PM)
As the newsroom's resident woman, I can safely tell you... none. No woman (other than the ones featured on TLC for dating men behind bars) would accept a proposal through the mail. However, most woman would keep a $75K ring.
Anthony Federico (2:13 PM)
Guy - Bernie was unbelievable according to our guys in Phoenix. No doubt Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XX5 was No. 1 but recent performances by Christina Augliera, Jordin Sparks and Renee Rancourt are worthy of discussion.
Jake Tulsa [via mobile]
How much has Ohio State fallen off and does this fully open the door for Michigan to finally beat them?
Josh Barbarotta (2:15 PM)
Master of the obvious here, but anytime you lose your best offensive weapon and your national championship-winning head coach...there's going to be a significant drop off. Michigan is probably a couple years away from making a national impact under new coach Brady Hoke but I think this may be their best chance to knock off the Buckeyes in quite a few years. If I were Ohio State, I'd plug in top recruit Braxton Miller at QB and go from there.
Casper Finucci [via mobile]
Better lockout: football or basketball?
D'Arcy Maine (2:17 PM)
Is this a trick question? I will say, between the 'Stand' shirts and players talking about heading over overseas, the NBA seems to be winning in the drama department.
Dave (Fish Kill, NY) [via mobile]
Will Greg Oden ever live up to being the #1 pick in the NBA Draft?
D'Arcy Maine (2:18 PM)
WIth Kevin Durant as the No. 2? Not likely, Dave. Even if Oden does manage to, you know, play a full season.
Derek, Ohio [via mobile]
Will Jim Tressel ever be a head coach again?
Josh Barbarotta (2:22 PM)
Total guess, but I'd say yes. Look, he has a national championship to his credit and has won nearly 75% of his games over a 30-plus year career. Did he make a mistake? Of course. But he was as good as it gets at the college level for an extended period of time and I'd be willing to bet someone hires him based on that fact alone once the sting of scandal subsides.
Howard Rip City [via mobile]
Is it possible that Ricky Rubio could actually be playing in Europe again next season if there's an NBA lockout?
D'Arcy Maine (2:22 PM)
Can you imagine? After all the time we've spent waiting to see if Rubio comes over to the NBA, the season locks out and he goes right back to Spain. Yup. That sounds like the Timberwolves luck.
Clams Casino [via mobile]
Is it so hard to give reporters microphones at a press conference? Not knowing what the athletes/coaches are answering is infuriating. In that note - what are your biggest sports pet peeves?
Josh Barbarotta (2:29 PM)
Amen, Clams Casino...Amen. You've just nailed my number 1 sports pet peeve. I'm pretty sure episodes of LOST made less sense than that does. A close 2nd is the lack of innovation in live-game announcer headgear. It's 2011. Let's get Dan Shulman, Orel Hershiser and Bobby V away from the Princess Leia ear muffs-with-microphone combo. While we're here, what's the deal with pretzels always being on the top shelf of vending machines?
Spicy Malone [via mobile]
Why is it so hard for David Stern and Adam Silver to pronounce the names of the NBA Draft picks? It's basically a finite group of selections. Take five minutes and go over the names. Not that hard. Unintentional comedy skyrockets when they look like stumped participants in the Spelling Bee.
D'Arcy Maine (2:32 PM)
The second half of the 2nd round was one of the most entertaining things I've witnessed in recent memory. Not only did Silver have no idea how to pronounce the names, there wasn't even proper footage or stats and instead we got several awkward minutes of analysis. In the defense of all those involved though, a lot of the later picks were relative unknowns and not listed in most (or any) mock drafts. Why not just enjoy the general awkwardness? I know I do.
Grunge (Seattle) [via mobile]
What song would you come up to the plate too?
Josh Barbarotta (2:34 PM)
"Happy Birthday". It makes me feel important when everyone sings to me.
66649 [via mobile]
D'Arcy - you should be ashamed of that Biffle joke. Step up your game.
D'Arcy Maine (2:35 PM)
It couldn't have been any worse than Josh's 'Happy Birthday' line above.
JB (Northfield, VT) [via mobile]
Rory McIlroy hasn't played in a tournament since winning the US Open. Do you think this will hurt his chance of winning this weekend?
D'Arcy Maine (2:37 PM)
I'm almost shocked that we have a serious question in this chat. It's been awhile. I think the bigger factor for Rory will be the all-around pressure. He's now expected to win and anything less will be a disappointment. We'll have to see how he handles it. Hopefully a break away from the spotlight for a few weeks will have kept his nerves at bay somewhat.
The Old Billy Baroo [via mobile]
Better ballgame treat: hot dog, crackerjacks or a beer?
D'Arcy Maine (2:42 PM)
Is that a serious question, Billy B? Defintely a beer. Unless you're underage. In which case, nothing beats a cold hot dog on a hot summer day at the ballpark.
Jim (Plattsburgh, NY) [via mobile]
Carlos Condit and BJ Peen agreed to fight each other through Twitter. Do you think more and more things will be agreed to through Twitter?
D'Arcy Maine (2:43 PM)
Don't tell that to Roy Williams. He might propose on Twitter.
Clicky Tick (memphis) [via mobile]
Who should win the ESPYs best team award?
Josh Barbarotta (2:49 PM)
Personally, I'd vote for the Bruins. The way they were eliminated from the postseason last year (up 3-0 in series vs. Philly, up 3-0 in Game 7) was crushing enough to bury any team for years to come. Their Stanley Cup run was a total team effort and the most fun I've ever had watching the NHL. That being said, couldn't argue if the Mavs won. They certainly deserve some props for helping the world avoid a Heat championship in year 1 of the Big Three.
kj oklahoma city, ok [via mobile]
what's up with michael irvin? that magazine cover is crazy!!
Josh Barbarotta (2:52 PM)
Google Michael Irvin. The man used to rock a fur coat on a regular basis. Pretty sure the cover doesn't phase him in the least. Also, not the first time he's been at the center of controversy.
TW [via mobile]
Kevin Durant says Yao Ming is a Hall of Famer. Agree or disagree?
D'Arcy Maine (2:56 PM)
Disagree, TW. And honestly, I think Durant does too. He's just too nice of a guy to say that publicly. Yao Ming did more for the NBA than almost anyone in history in terms of the exposure he brought to the sport in China and Asia but unfortunately his career stats (19.0 PPG, 9.2 RPG) and lack of a title doesn't exactly make him an obvious choice for the Hall of Fame.
Drew (San Antonio, TX) [via mobile]
Who will win the British Open???
Josh Barbarotta (2:58 PM)
Wide open. Only sure of 2 things about the winner of the Open Championship: 1) He will have the lowest score. 2) It won't be Tiger Woods.
D'Arcy Maine (3:00 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining us today! This chat was definitely... interesting. Enjoy the All-Star Game tonight and we'll hopefully see all of you back here next week for our chat.
