Monday Night Football Pregame Chat With D'Arcy Maine
D'Arcy Maine (5:01 PM)
Greetings from Sun Life Stadium in Miami for the MNF season opener! Glad to see you have back joining me for another season. All eight of you.
D'Arcy Maine (5:02 PM)
I'll be chatting for the next 90 minutes or so and then switching over to do a live blog during the Pats-Dolphins game. So, without futher ado... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? (Apologies for the lameness of this intro, I think I'm contractually obligated to ask that question 400 times tonight).
D'Arcy Maine (5:02 PM)
...As I typed that Hank Williams Jr. took the fiend and asked the very same question. Spoiler alert for gametime.
Mike (Tampa, FL) [via mobile]
What's the latest on Nate Kaeding?
D'Arcy Maine (5:05 PM)
Can't believe I'm starting this chat with a kicker question. I'm going to guess you're like me and you drafted a kicker far earlier than you should have in your fantasy draft, Mike. Lesson learned on that on. Norv Turner said earlier this afternoon that Kaeding is out for the season with after injuring his left knee. I haven't heard confirmation but the rumor is a torn ACL. Tough loss for the Chargers (and my fantasy team). SD hasn't announced his replacement yet. Stay tuned.
Roy, ATL [via mobile]
I saw it was raining when Wendi Nix was on the TV talking about the game tonight. What's the latest weather report?
D'Arcy Maine (5:08 PM)
Sources close to Mother Nature are saying thunderstorms still in the forecast, Roy. However, as I type this, it's sunny and warm outside with a very slight breeze. Somewhat overcast but nothing in the sky seems particularly concerning in my humble, no meteorological knowledge of an opinion.
Josh (Minnesota) [via mobile]
if I pretend that mannings streak didn't matter, am I in self denial? Ps did anyone suggest Collins would be a bad idea?
Drew (San Antonio, TX) [via mobile]
So..... the Colts?
D'Arcy Maine (5:11 PM)
Uh... yeah. How about those Colts? I think Peyton Manning is the first person in the history of any sport to prove his MVP-worthiness by NOT playing. Yikes. Kerry Collins somehow found a way to top Donovan McNabb yesterday in the 'worst QB performance of the week' category. Still no official word on Manning's timetable for return but if it's anything longer than a few weeks, I would expect Jim Irsay to be heading back down to Hattiesburg any day now.
Keith (Boston) [via mobile]
Did Brady have his hair in a ponytail as he entered the stadium?
D'Arcy Maine (5:14 PM)
I've yet to see Brady today, Keith. Is Bieber rocking a ponytail these days? If so, Brady probably is too. Whether you're a fan of his hair or not, at least Patriots fans should take some solace in the fact that he's not Chad Henne.
Jon, Charlotte [via mobile]
Your tweets were crackin me up last night about the Cowboys. What do you make of their 4th qtr. meltdown?
D'Arcy Maine (5:18 PM)
I'm still speechless over that 4th quarter collapse, Jon. I blame the dude from Gossip Girl's sister. I was taking some notes while watching last night and my entire paper for the 4th quarter reads, "WTF?". Romo and the 'Boys had an impressive three quarters and then they just completely lost it. To review Romo's final quarter... He fumbled on a sack, threw an interception and wasn't ready for the snap in the second-to-last play of the game. I don't even think Jeremy Shockey could have helped him from choking. I'm interested to see how Dallas recovers next week. Next week' game against the 49ers in SF will be VERY telling about their season in my mind.
Henry (Dallas) [via mobile]
Did yesterday make you a Cam Newton believer?
D'Arcy Maine (5:21 PM)
What a performance by Cammy-Cam yesterday. Only thing that could have made it better would have been, um, a win. Guess that's kind of important. Cam broke about 349534 records in his debut yesterday including setting the new record for most passing yards (422) ever in an NFL debut. Not too shabby. I don't like to make any bold statements after Week 1 but I'm certainly airing on the believer side. Let's reevaluate in a month or so.
Alex C. San Diego [via mobile]
Wondered this last season, how early do you show up to these games?
D'Arcy Maine (5:25 PM)
Pathetically early, Alex. I'm almost always the first person in the press box. It's probably a sign I need a hobby. Or a life. But I'm super paranoid about being let in. Today, for a 7 PM start, I got to the stadium for 1:30. Feel free o judge me on this.
Daniel - Motown [via mobile]
Did the ATF agents assigned to find the real Pittsburgh Steelers succeed in locating them? If so, are they in shape and ready to play Sunday?
D'Arcy Maine (5:30 PM)
Did anyone see that outcome coming yesterday??? I wouldn't believe you if you said you did. Yesterday's rout marked the first time since 2006 that the Ravens beat the Steelers while Roethlisberger was starting. Pitt never seemed to even have a chance yesterday. It's hard to determine with just the one game to judge on if it was a fluke or if the Steelers really have so many gaping holes or if the Ravens are just THAT good. I think Pittsburgh is still a really talented team and I'm not ruling them at this point. They just weren't ready to play for whatever reason. They host the Seahawks next week so that should be a good game for them to rebound with.
randy [via mobile]
any celebs in attendance?
D'Arcy Maine (5:33 PM)
If there's one thing I learned while covering the Heat during the NBA playoffs, it's that celebrities never show up before the end of first quarter. See: Wayne, Lil. However I do know that Tony Stewart will be here and wouldn't be surprised if (the now $2K-poorer) Serena Williams and the rest of the dream team of Miami ownership is in house.
D'Arcy Maine (5:34 PM)
Can add that Fergie will be performing the National Anthem. I'll keep my feelings on this to myself.
Terry, AZ [via mobile]
I'm watching the US OPEN final right now. Is there a NFL player who you think will have a djokovic season?
D'Arcy Maine (5:38 PM)
Very bummed they don't have the U.S. Open on here in the press box, Terry. I've loved watching Djokovic's maturation this year to becoming tennis' dominant force. Interesting question. Seems kind of obvious but what about Reggie Bush as the football comparison? Like Novak, he's had a lot of hype over the past fews years but hasn't lived up to it. Reggie is now in a position where he could (that's the operative word) thrive if he can maintain focus and get it together (and have the help from Henne and his teammates). Anyone have better suggestion? I'm sure I'm missing a better comparison.
Dave, Albany, NY [via mobile]
Any truth to the rumor that BRady will be wearing red, white, and blue Uggs tonight?
D'Arcy Maine (5:45 PM)
How did you know what I was wearing tonight? Hope Brady's not rocking them too. Would be awkward.
Steve, Rialto Ca [via mobile]
D'arcy, do you think that the Texans have a legitimate shot at the Superbowl?
D'Arcy Maine (5:47 PM)
Ehhhhh, let's not carried away just yet. Texans looked good yesterday but they didn't exactly have the greatest opponent to make a fair assesment. That said, if they can maintain the momentum they had on Sunday, they could be contenders.
Paul [via mobile]
I know the description says "football related" but any chance you would share your thoughts on this season of Jersey Shore? I've been waiting to ask you since the new season began.
D'Arcy Maine (5:51 PM)
I'll never turn down a chance to talk 'Jersey Shore', Paul. Or can I can I call you Paulie? First, if every player came to play with the smacking-their-head-in-the-wall intensity of The Situation, every game would come down to the final possession. I'm enjoying the season but really wish they did more with the whole being in Italy thing. It really doesn't seem much different than being on the Shore or in Miami. But on a serious note, to the ladies out there, please let J-WOWW's face be an example of why not to resort to plastic surgery. That concludes this public service announcement.
Westyn (Eugene, OR)
So which team takes a crack at Favre first (Dallas, Seattle, Pitt, KC)?
D'Arcy Maine (5:53 PM)
Friend of the blog Westyn83 in the house! May I suggest you follow Jim Irsay on Twitter? Think he's realized it's a left at the Firestone in Hattiesburg and will making a return trip shortly. Entertaining tweets to follow.
Roger H. [via mobile]
Still sunshine at the stadium?
D'Arcy Maine (5:54 PM)
Just sunshine, daydreams and puppies here, Roger. It is starting to feel like rain and thunderstorms are still in the forecast. Hopefully they'll hold off and not distrupt this game at all.
Tony Romo (Dallas, TX) [via mobile]
Uhhhh. My bad.
D'Arcy Maine (5:57 PM)
Yeah... you're bad. I mean, your bad.
joey jacksonville fl [via mobile]
what do you think about mcnabb's performance?
D'Arcy Maine (6:03 PM)
Not much, Joey. Donovan passed for just 39 yards in his regular-season debut with the Vikings. To translate, Tom Brady will probably have 39 yards in one play tonight. Even McNabb himself said he wsa embarassed after the game. Sad to see a player with such talent and an amazing career end it this way. Hopefully he can bounce back and return to some pre-Redskins numbers. If he doesn't soon, it's hard to believe the Vikes won't hand the reigns to rookie Christian Ponder before the season's over.
Tim (Reno, NV)
How do the fans tonight compare with those you saw in Richmond for NASCAR? Really liked your piece on Carl Edwards btw!
D'Arcy Maine (6:07 PM)
Thanks Tim! I write this as Rick Ross blares over the speakers. That's difference No. 1. Of probably 34930824. Hard to compare fans of different sports and even in different markets. But I got some death threats during the NBA playoffs about my thoughts on Miami fans so I'm going to end this response before I get myself in trouble.
Jake Palm Beach [via mobile]
I was wondering I'm watching monday night countdown with Boomer and the boys and all they keep talking about are the patriots. Can you tell me why the dolphins are most underrated talk about team in the nfl
D'Arcy Maine (6:10 PM)
Because of the Patriots impressive (regular season) success in recent years, Jake. The 'Fins have obviously not been comparable. I think the jury is still out in a lot of people's minds with this Miami squad due to the newlook backfield, questionnable QB and a slew of other questions. They have a chance to silence a lot o doubters tonight but until they do that, I wouldn't expect to hear them get a ton of love from the media and fans around the league.
D'Arcy Maine (6:12 PM)
Part-owner Marc Anthony is here. Howeverm, he seems to have forgotten to button up his shirt all the way. Embarassing!
Westyn (Eugene, OR)
Thanks for the suggestion. Pretty soon the Brett Favre saga will have more sequels than The Land Before Time.
Pete, Rhode Island [via mobile]
Predictions for tonight's games?
D'Arcy Maine (6:19 PM)
I was waiting for someone to ask this one. Let's start with the Vegas odds, shall we? Patriots are favored by 7.0 and the Broncos by 3.0 in the nightcap. I think NE gets the win tonight but it will be closer than most are anticipating. Think Denver wins at home as well but it's a game until the final minutes.
D'Arcy Maine (6:20 PM)
Fun fact to impress your friends (or to score a free drink from your friendly bartender): The Raiders have lost 11-straight primetime games. Their last win came in November of 2004 (against the Broncos).
Sam (New Hampshire) [via mobile]
Is Reggie Bush still dating that Old Navy girl?
D'Arcy Maine (6:23 PM)
Anddddd that's my cue to wrap this chat up. Thanks to everyone for the questions and Favre jokes. Hope you'll join me for my live blog during the game. Will be posted on site shortly. Enjoy both games tonight!
