Tyler (Waaay Up North)
Who do you like to win this week, regardless of FedEx standings?
FARRELL EVANS (3:12 PM)
Welcome to my Tuesday Chat. I like Luke Donald to win this week. Furyk beat him by a shot last year when he played good enough to win.
Farrell, you have to quit with your assertions that Tiger has no business being on the Presidents Cup team. It's really a no brainer, he's the best ever. Your making yourself sound silly. Thats like saying if Peyton Manning is cleared medically and wants to play next year they should consider starting someone else in his place.
FARRELL EVANS (3:14 PM)
Ryan,Tiger won six USGA titles (match play) in a row. I'm not unaware of his greatness. My point all along has been that he doesn't deserve to be on the team based on his finishes in the last two years.
Austin (Denver, CO)
Hey FE, Chances Mickelson wins the TOUR Championship, and chances that he wins the FedEx Cup if he does?
FARRELL EVANS (3:15 PM)
Austin,No chance. Phil is too mental right now and it's a shame. He's a great player.
Who do you think Couples should/will choose with his 2nd captains pick? If you were the captain, which two players would you pick? Is Singh a lock for Norman and who will be his 2nd choice?
FARRELL EVANS (3:17 PM)
Couples will pick Keegan Bradley, who played pretty good last week in Chicago. The guy did win a major. Singh has to be a lock for Norman after a nice comeback season after not doing much last year. John Senden is my choice for his second pick.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
When will we see a Female Golfer on the PGA Tour again?
FARRELL EVANS (3:18 PM)
Chris,Hopefully never. The women have a great tour that deserves the best women players in its fields.
Who cares about golf without tiger ??It's becoming like boxing----irrelevant!!!Wake me up when it's on the prowl again ok?Thanks!!!
FARRELL EVANS (3:20 PM)
KL,No argument from me. Golf is better with Tiger, more interesting, but you're right he doesn't have to own all the story lines. And to your aside about boxing. It will become relevant again when there are more exciting heavyweights.
What's it like being a minority covering a sport where basically every player is white? Are private country clubbers surprised to see you? Serious questions.
FARRELL EVANS (3:26 PM)
Benny from the Bronx,I don't know another reality. It's been that way for me as a player in junior golf in the 1980s in Georgia to now as a black golf writer in mostly white press rooms. My bosses want me to be me and that happens to be someone interested in telling golf stories who happens to bring a unique background to the game. Obviously there are sometimes a second take or two, depending on the city. But it's no big deal unless I'm asked to pick up trash or give directions to parking or asked about tickets as if all scalpers wear U.S. Open hats and carry computer bags with tour credentials on their chest.
Does ESPN have anyone covering the Solheim Cup, sees like a fun event
FARRELL EVANS (3:27 PM)
Mick Elliott from ESPNW will be providing Solheim related content.
Do you think small field events (like the tour champs, world match play, Chevron and Nedbank) should give out full OWGR points?
FARRELL EVANS (3:29 PM)
Shoshana,No, especially the Chevron. It's not an official event. The Tour Championship is legitimate as the Super Bowl of the Tour season.
What did you think of Olazabal's comments about players skipping the Seve cup. Trying to imagine the reaction/commentary if Tiger had pulled a Rory
FARRELL EVANS (3:31 PM)
Ollie had to know that after Seve died guys weren't going to play in that event. Look what has happened to the Byron Nelson since the old man died. And Colonial since Hogan passed. Everybody knows that you play Memorial and Bay Hill because of Arnie and Jack. It's a no-brainer.
Eh, I have no problem with cutting a great player some slack (and choosing them for the team) if they were out injured. He wouldn't have been my choice, but given the Cog Hill gag job on Sunday, the pick now looks a lot better
FARRELL EVANS (3:32 PM)
Shoshana,Tiger is probably going to play well. He doesn't have to play great to contribute points to the team.
Tim (Rhode Island)
Who is a safer pick for the President's, Dusty J or Fowler?
FARRELL EVANS (3:33 PM)
Dustin Johnson is already on the team. Fowler wouldn't be a smart pick based on his inconsistent play during the playoffs. He's not even in the Tour Championship.
If you could make two changes to the tour "play-offs" what would they be and why?
FARRELL EVANS (3:36 PM)
Increase the number of slots at the Tour Championship from 30 to 50 to make a stronger field.Secondly, I would hold a NCAA basketball style play-in tournament to get into the playoffs for guys who didn't qualify the normal way.
just read John Feinstein's "A good walk spoiled" which was awesome. Any other behind the scenes golf books you can recommend?
FARRELL EVANS (3:38 PM)
Alan Shipnuck wrote a book several years ago about a late caddie named Steve Duplantis and his boss, Rich Beem. It's funny.
Glad to hear that about Soheim (although as a woman I'm sort of offended at the concept of ESPNW)
FARRELL EVANS (3:39 PM)
What offends you about having a magazine and website dedicated to covering women's sports?
FARRELL EVANS (3:41 PM)
Adam,The pros are just like you. They get impatient. They get angry. They stand up and sit down. They take a million practice swings. But the best of them regroup by going through their pre shot routine the same way as they would if they were in a normal pace of play. The best advice is to relax and not be in a hurry and let the game come to you.
Ed (Long Island)
I don't understand why you and Harig want larger field for the TC. I think less is more here. Increasing the field to 50 doesn't make it stronger, just more participants and the chance that the 50th guy has one good week and wins when he doesn't deserve to be there. If you look at the cuts %'ages from some of the guys who made the playoffs, it's a disgrace they ever got in "THE PLAYOFFS". I think this also hurts the game in that the stars aren't marketed enough, other than Phil and Tiger.
FARRELL EVANS (3:44 PM)
The Tour wants excitement and for its marquee players to go late into the season. You get the excitement by offering a chance for a cinderella story with a guy who you think shouldn't be in the field.
Are there any players who are a lot more interesting off the record?
I am sort of offended that they don't think these stories deserve main ESPN, sort of in the same way college teams are the Blue Devils and then the lady Blue Devils
FARRELL EVANS (3:49 PM)
Shoshana,That's not it at all. And tell me how you would distinguish between the two teams if you didn't call them the Lady Blue Devils or the Lady Vols or Bulldogs?
Elijah (South Carolina)
Do u think Tiger Woods can really make a solid comeback
FARRELL EVANS (3:50 PM)
Elijah,Tiger is the best to play the game: the best putter, the most creative winner, the most dramatic. The comeback will not satisfy anyone unless he breaks Jack's record of 18 majors.
g.p. (north dakota)
You said Mickelson is all mental, mostly with putting, or all aspects right now?
FARRELL EVANS (3:53 PM)
He's all mental. He's putting into the dark every night so he's not working on other aspects of his game. He's a magician so he can go low from time to time. He's done everything in golf but win a U.S. Open and British Open. You would think he would have learned how to enjoy it by now. I know he's got great family perspective and all that good stuff. But he's got to let off the gas with all that analysis and just play golf.
Ed (Long Island)
I am not a Tiger fan, I root for Phil which is frustrating, but anyway, I think there is way too much talk about Tiger and the Presidents Cup. It is an exhibition, similar to an all star game where Willie Mays goes for 20 something straight years. It is not an All Pro selection for a reward of having the best season. It is an maufactured exhibition for entertainment purposes and therefore the biggest draw in golf goes - end of discussion.
FARRELL EVANS (3:55 PM)
Ed,We are going to talk about Tiger because he is still the most attractive storyline in the game. I don't know what else to tell you. Obviously we're talking about an exhibition with the Presidents Cup. But it means a lot to the guys who make those teams. It's a big deal.
g.p. (north dakota)
farrell, have you ever played at any of the great north dakota courses? Bully Pulpit, Links of north dakota, Kings Walk, etc?
FARRELL EVANS (3:56 PM)
G.P.I have only driven through North Dakota.
How much influence do you think the sponsors and networks had in the decision to include Tiger on the President's Cup team? Like most, I am not ready to watch a tournament that does not include him.
FARRELL EVANS (3:58 PM)
Willow,If I were cynical and I am not because I try hard not to be, I would say absolutely that sponsors and networks influenced the decision. But I'm trusting that Fred Couples used his 30-plus years of knowledge as a pro to come to what he thinks is the best decision for his team.
That argument would hold more water if it wasn't also applied to sports where there is no men's team, or why don't we call them the male blue devils? You cannot tell me that women's sports are thought of on the same level as men's sports in this country, and I think ESPNW exists in part bc of that, rather than women's sports like the Solheim cup being covered in the same way as the men's
FARRELL EVANS (4:01 PM)
Shoshana,Why not as a woman support ESPNW because it's there. For years I have said that the LPGA Tour would be a lot stronger if more women bought tickets to the tournaments and supported its players. We need everybody regardless of gender to support all of our teams, but there is nothing wrong with supporting a women's magazine and website that focuses on women athletes. It fills a void.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who is the Oldest Golfer on the PGA Tour Right Now?
FARRELL EVANS (4:02 PM)
Kenny Perry is the oldest player with full status. It's a toss up between him and Fred Funk, even though they have status on the Champions Tour.
Ed (Long Island)
Is there an excitement level at the TC from the players that matches a major or not so much?
FARRELL EVANS (4:04 PM)
Ed,The Tour Championship is laid back, easy-going affair, much like being a Braves fan at this point in the season. If we make the playoffs it's great, if we don't that's ok too.
Phil has complained about a lot of (Rees Jones?) redone courses. He says they aren't good for the average golfer. What courses would Phil say are excellent for both the pros and amatures?
FARRELL EVANS (4:05 PM)
Adam,Like most people, Phil knows better what he doesn't like than what he does. He probably would say Augusta National but who wouldn't say that?
g.p. (north dakota)
Who have been your top 5 players to follow on the course throughout the years?
FARRELL EVANS (4:06 PM)
Lee JanzenSeveCalvin PeeteDavis Love IIILanny Wadkinsand John Daly
Anyways back to golf: If you could invent a silly season tournament what would the format be?
FARRELL EVANS (4:07 PM)
A Par 3 tournament at Rick Smith's TreeTops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan. It's the best par 3 course in the world.
@Adam he'd (Phil) say any course that he designed
FARRELL EVANS (4:09 PM)
Men and Women,My time is almost up here. It's been a fun and fast hour chatting with you. Same time, same place, next Tuesday.
Which of the current players have the demeanor to be also successful as a coach?
FARRELL EVANS (4:09 PM)
Mike Whan hands down winner for worst PR move of the year award?
FARRELL EVANS (4:10 PM)
Shoshana,You get the last question. Mike Whan must be studying this situation. He has to know the ramifications. I have interviewed him and he is a marketer by trade. So he's aware of public sentiment.
FARRELL EVANS (4:11 PM)
