Chat with James Walker
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, ESPN.com AFC East blogger James Walker will stop by to chat about the NFL and what to expect from your team.
Walker joined ESPN.com in 2008 after three seasons covering the Cleveland Browns for the Columbus Dispatch.
Send your questions now and join James Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET!
James Walker (4:00 PM)
What's new, everyone? Let's get started with another AFC East chat.
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Will the Dolphins be in the "Luck sweepstakes", or do they have too much talent to keep losing?
James Walker (4:02 PM)
Dr. H, that's a good question. The Dolphins are firmly in the race for now. The only way they stay in it is if they quit/fall apart because of the coaching situation. Players hear what's going on. They know the rumors and suggestions that Tony Sparano could get ousted if Miami doesn't turn it around. That creates a bad situation in the locker room. If Miami doesn't win soon, it's going to get real ugly.
James Walker (4:03 PM)
But on paper, Miami is still capable of winning enough games to avoid the top pick.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think is the Worst Quarterback in the AFC East this season?
James Walker (4:04 PM)
Chris, that's why we're doing the "Sanchez-Henne-Fitz Watch." We want to determine who is behind Tom Brady and who's the worst of the bunch. I haven't covered the division long enough to say one way or the other. So I'm watching all the QBs closely this year and grading each performance.
Troy Reed (Balitburgh)
I miss you, James. Please come back!
James Walker (4:07 PM)
Troy Reed! What's up? Why don't you sign as a free agent to Buffalo, New England or Miami. These AFC East teams can definitely use help defending the pass.
the hooded genius (CT, New England)
Who do you think get more rushing yards on Sunday: Ray Rice or Run DMC?
James Walker (4:07 PM)
I would go with McFadden. He's hot right now. Ride the wave.
James Walker (4:08 PM)
Plus, I don't see the Jets giving up that many rushing yards two weeks in a row. If they're working on fixing anything this week, it's the run defense.
Hey JW stopping in to give the old AFCN Blogger some love, have a question on your thoughts about this weeks matchup between Balt&NYJ. Do you think this week is more crutial for the Jets to win or for Baltimore not to lose?? thanks
James Walker (4:10 PM)
Hello, Fran. Great matchup, as usual. I think there's pressure on both teams. But there's a little more on NY because of its schedule. The Jets have a huge rivarly game next week at New England, and they can easily be 2-3 in a couple weeks if they don't play well on Sunday.
Jared (Syracuse, NY)
How do the Bills match up against the Bengals next week?
James Walker (4:13 PM)
Favorable matchup and timing for Buffalo. The Bills use a lot of spread, four-WR sets, and I think Cincinnati's secondary is going to have a hard time keeping up. Plus, the Bengals have a young offense that is struggling. Fans aren't showing up, so that takes away some of the home-field advantage. There's a lot going wrong in Cincinnati right now.
Jon B. (Buffalo,NY)
bills looking nice but how long do you think it will last?
James Walker (4:14 PM)
I'm not making any season or game predictions this year. I'm just along for the ride. I did that the past few years in the AFCN blog and decided I wanted to sit the year out.
Isn't it arguable that they already have been quitting? I mean, Miami was supposed to have a good defence this year... where has it been? Getting lit up at home is nonsense and not beating the Browns when you absolutely have to get a W. There is more quit than fight in this team sov far. Embarassing for a Fish fan. Again.
James Walker (4:16 PM)
I watched two Miami games in-person this year and I don't see them quitting. New England and Houston are just better teams. The Browns loss is embarrassing for Miami, but the team hasn't executed well all season. The effort is still there. But will it be there for 16 games if the Dolphins keep losing?
Any word on Mangold's status for this weeks game against Baltimore?
James Walker (4:19 PM)
Nothing official. The Jets will probably see how the next few days progress. But I will tell you high-ankle sprains for most players take several weeks. I knew for sure he wasn't going to make it back last week. This week, I would say the chance is moderate, but not great.
Now that Brady has had his once a season subpar game do you expect the Pats to bounce back this week in Oakland?
James Walker (4:20 PM)
I don't think the Patriots should panic one bit. Brady may go another few years before he throws four interceptions in a game again. If that's what it takes for New England to lose, I think the Patriots are in good shape.
James Walker (4:21 PM)
New England does need to fix the defense, though.
Da Biz (No Cali)
How hyped do you think the city of Oakland and especially Richard Seymour will be to see New England come to town?
James Walker (4:23 PM)
The Black Hole will be rocking. Oakland proved last week it can play with the big boys. This will be another test to see if the Raiders are for real.
Since there was a plethora of great teams in Boston lately, does Buffaloes emergence give NY teams hope to rise?
James Walker (4:24 PM)
Are the Bills the best football team in the state of New York? I think that's a fair question.
Why doesn't Miami win at home? I'll tell you why, because they can't stand the Jimmy Buffet song "fins to the left fins to the right" song every time they score. Can you blame them?
James Walker (4:26 PM)
Is that the reason? I couldn't figure it out, but I guess the mystery is solved.
Whoa Whoa WHOA! Whats all this talk of Buffalo taking the division? Did the world just forget my Pats? It took Buffalo getting 4 interceptions to beat us in the final seconds! We are still the best in the East, right James?
James Walker (4:27 PM)
No predictions from me on who will win the AFC East. Buffalo was the better team Sunday, but it's a long season.
I feel like it has to be time to give Joe McKnight a try. With the offensive line situation the Jets have, a power back like Shonn Greene just isn't working out. Should he start getting some serious carries?
James Walker (4:28 PM)
It may be too early for McKnight. He's helping the team in other ways. But I think New York should strongly consider LT.
Do you see the Bills being able to extend Fitzpatrick, Steve Johnson and Fred Jackson any time soon?
James Walker (4:31 PM)
The Bills have the ability to extend these players. The cap isn't the issue. The questions are when and for how much? I expect the Bills to keep this group together, especially if they keep winning.
how bout Daniel Thomas? Starting to look for real with 202 yards in his first 2 nfl games
James Walker (4:32 PM)
I like what I see from Thomas. He's one of the few bright spots on the Dolphins this season. Thomas is good between the tackles and has good vision. Miami needs to find better ways to use Thomas and Reggie Bush.
Matt K (Columbus)
How do you explain the Bills lack of getting CJ Spiller involved? Especially considering Roscoe Parrish is out. I know Fred Jackson gets the bulk of the carries but come on!
James Walker (4:34 PM)
The Bills are trying by giving Spiller return duties. I just think Buffalo is rolling right now with Fred Jackson. If it's not broke, don't mess with it.
Matt K (Columbus)
Can you comment on the Bills decision to go on 4th and a mile early in the game against the Patriots? It turned into an interception.
James Walker (4:36 PM)
I thought it was a curious call. But Tom Brady started so hot that it factored into Buffalo's thinking. Both teams knew it was going to be a shootout.
matt (miami, fl)
Jimmy... is Jake Long still injured or is he really this rusty? He hasnt looked like a Pro-Bowler lately.
James Walker (4:38 PM)
Long isn't having his best start. A lot of people questioned if the layoff would hurt and I think it has. Long hasn't complained about being injured since coming back.
21numbers (Miami )
do you think miami have chance against the chargers
James Walker (4:39 PM)
Any given Sunday, 21. Any given Sunday.
Why wont the Fins concede that Marco Columbo was a waste at RT?! He is gonna kill Henne!
James Walker (4:41 PM)
Who are they going to put in, Timmy? If Miami had someone good on the bench, he would have been in by now.
Brian K (Rochester NY)
Was Tom Brady's 4 int against the Bills a fluke or did Brady show he was human and does bad every once in a while?
James Walker (4:42 PM)
I wouldn't say four INTs in a fluke in any circumstance. Buffalo made some really good plays. The only bad throw was probably the one to Leodis McKelvin.
We all agree its not time for the Pats to panic...but what about the Jets. We Jets fans know nothing but panic...i need someone to talk me down from the ledge....
James Walker (4:44 PM)
I don't think anyone should panic with a 2-1 record. Man, New Yorkers are tough. Every team can't be 3-0.
What do the dolphins need to do to turn there season around
James Walker (4:45 PM)
It really comes down to execution in the red zone. If Miami scored TDs instead of FGs, it could have at least one victory under its belt.
Have you ever seen a team rise in the power rankings as much in two weeks as the Bills have? Bills were 27 after week 1 and now you all have them at 6, 21 spots in two weeks is a lot.
James Walker (4:46 PM)
Nope. That's the biggest two-week jump I've seen in my four seasons.
You think Miami will be callin my agent in the future?
James Walker (4:47 PM)
The Dolphins will be honoring you at halftime soon. You can switch jerseys then if you want.
Taylor (Fairport Ny)
who deserves to be paid higher ryan fitzpatrick or fred jackson?
James Walker (4:49 PM)
The QB usually gets the premium. It's a more important position and harder to fill.
how many playoff teams will come out of the AFC east?
James Walker (4:50 PM)
There's potential for three now that the Bills stepped up early. But that's really hard. Two is more likely.
Jack (Brooklyn, NY)
Isn't it time to retire the "Sanchez-Henne-Fitz" watch and replace it with the "Brady-Fitz" watch? It's pretty insulting putting Fitz in the same conversation as those guys.
James Walker (4:52 PM)
It's a long season, Jack. I'm committed to looking at each guy for one full year before I make my determination.
Troy Reed (Between Balt and Pitt)
Really James the AFC East? Come on man!
James Walker (4:53 PM)
Troy Reed, I told you to sign a free-agent contract with the Bills, Dolphins or Patriots. All of those teams are desperate for secondary help.
JW, help me out here, my brother is a big Miami fan and I am trying to convince the guy that not only is Miami in the Luck sweepstakes but if they win it, Sporano will not get a chance to work with him. Give me something to back my argument!
James Walker (4:55 PM)
I don't see any way Miami gets Andrew Luck and keeps Tony Sparano. The Dolphins will have to win 2-4 games for the top pick. It's one or the other.
Do you think that the AFC East will produce the AFC champion this year/ go on to win the superbowl? If so, who do you think it will be?
James Walker (4:57 PM)
No predictions. But I covered two Super Bowls in three years with the AFC North. I'm bringing good luck to the AFC East.
Sheena (Miami, Florida)
Hi Jim, any chance daniel thomas and/or Mike Pouncy is in like for ROY?
James Walker (4:59 PM)
I think Miami will have to win more games to get noticed. Usually, that plays a part if rookies are putting up similiar numbers.
The Judge (Utah)
I know your not doing predictions...but my bills i predicted before the bye to go 4-2 with loses to the pats and eagles. But now, 6-0 isnt too far out is it?
James Walker (5:00 PM)
So you're calling three more wins in a row, Judge?
James Walker (5:02 PM)
Everyone, thanks for your time. Remember to check the AFCE blog and AFCE Twitter for constant updates.
James Walker (5:02 PM)
See you all in the blog.
