Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Hi everyone: Glad to see some of you caught the altered time for today! As always, another week of football, more injuries to discuss. Let's go!
Whats up with vick. is he playing next week or should i start Kolb?
Stephania Bell (12:06 PM)
Nate: Many are wondering the same thing. Now we know that the hand is not broken, but it's not an automatic that he plays. Contusion is a deep bruise, primary issue is functionality. If the swelling stays and he can't bend his fingers the way he needs to for grip, then he will have trouble with handoffs, snaps, etc and that is the concern. You're gonna have to wait until later in the week to get a definitive answer - but at least we know (likely) that if he misses, it's just for one week.
Joe (San Francisco)
Can you please update us on the severity of Gore's ankle injury? Coach says he's fine, but Gore doesn't sound so optimistic.
Stephania Bell (12:08 PM)
Joe: I know, Gore sounded a bit non-committal. Maybe that's a frustrated Gore. Frustrated with the o-line, with his short ypc, then getting beat up. But if anyone was concerned that Harbaugh would all of a sudden turn to Hunter for more work, it looks like that's not exactly going to happen. I expect he plays.
Finally i own the first post. Maclin left the game with a hamstring issue, is this serious enough to keep him out this week?
Stephania Bell (12:11 PM)
Drew: Actually, you had the third! But still impressive. After hearing about the injury (and let's face it, could we really be surprised when he had missed so much training and conditioning while being sick), it sounded like it could be a problem but later was downplayed. As we all know, hamstrings are hard to define timelines for, but this does not sound like a significant strain.
Stephania Bell (12:11 PM)
So, it appears Maclin has a chance to play this week.
Is Arian Foster going to be ready this week. 100%.
Stephania Bell (12:14 PM)
Allan: The people next to Foster can't guarantee him at 100% - if they could have, they would have known not to play him in Week 2. But they are feeling better about him after him resting another week. He did enough in practice last week to potentially play, even in a lesser role, yet he rested. Kubiak already saying they plan to have him back in a big role and Ben Tate apparently tweaked his own ankle.
whats up with gates foot? is this a serious issue?
Stephania Bell (12:17 PM)
Kyle: Have you been following the Gates story since last year? In our preview shows I said this would be a management issue, I wrote a column dedicated to Gates' foot concerns. Yes, this is serious - and it has been since last year. More worrisome since he came into camp somewhat limited. Now it's feeling worse than it did when he started and they're trying to decide whether Gates deals with week-in and week-out uncertainty (which means fantasy owners inherit that as well) or whether they allow him to rest for multiple weeks in the hope it gives him a better second half. He's seeing a specialist today and they hope to get some better idea after that.
Jason (PHX) [via mobile]
Any info on TO's rehab? I'm sure someone could use him.
Stephania Bell (12:18 PM)
Jason: Funny you should mention that. I'd bet that there are teams who are not saying anything out loud but who are keeping tabs on what he's doing. Not much publicly, but he's only at 5 months post-op. I'd say another month before he could really push the football activity - and that presumes that all is healing well. Nobody probably ready to make a move on him just yet.
what does a Kidney Bruise for Ryan Grant exactly mean?
Stephania Bell (12:20 PM)
Steve: Well, it hurts a lot. And the key is that it heals enough for them to not worry about bleeding and more severe damage should he return to contact. Not clear yet whether he'll be available to play this week but wouldn't surprise me if he sat.
Whats the deal with Beanie Wells? Is he going to be startable anytime soon? Or is he going to be Foster-like?
Stephania Bell (12:22 PM)
Johnnie: Coach Whisenhunt says he expects him this week. Never sounded like a major injury but it was late in the week, they probably did not want to risk it. We'll see how he fares in practice but Cards seem pretty confident he'll be able to go this Sunday.
I think I know the answer to this, but any word on how Aaron Hernandez is progressing?
Stephania Bell (12:24 PM)
Mike: You do. There is rarely any word on guys who were out the prior week until at least the first practice session rolls around. So, not yet.
Hey Steffi Bad News. Was Tolbert's lack of production recently due to his calf injury or do you see Mathews as the clear cut starter in SD. Thanks
Stephania Bell (12:25 PM)
Drew: I think the team has always planned on Mathews as the clear cut starter, once he could prove he could deliver. Starting to look that way. Tolbert's calf may not be helping him but this past week was disappointing. Still think he has value, especially PPR, but mostly as flex right now.
With DMC's latest "tweak" is Michael Bush a must add for even non DMC owners?
Stephania Bell (12:27 PM)
Jake: Everything we're hearing about DMC and the groin strain is that it was minor and he could have returned to the game (but they were doing so well, they didn't need him to!) Probably not a bad idea to grab Michael Bush b/c we've seen DMC deal with injuries off and on. But he's probably on your bench the way DMC is going right now.
Marcie (Seattle WA)
Hi Stephania Is Washington now considered a number 1 receiver for Tennessee? Thank you!
Stephania Bell (12:28 PM)
Hi Marcie: Have to believe he is. I mean, Hasselbeck has to go somewhere and I think that's who he's going to be looking to more often now.
Hi Stephania! When should we expect Colston to come back at full strength? Who would you rather have between the other Saints receivers, Meachem or Moore, and will that change when Colston returns? Thanks
Stephania Bell (12:31 PM)
Dave: The team has maintained four weeks all along and Colston has been making good progress. But as it gets cloiser to actually returning to football activities, we'll find out if they plan to hold him a little longer. In the meantime, I like Moore. Now that he has had a strong outing - and along with TE Jimmy Graham, he's a Brees favorite, I like Moore as a fantasy option.
Hey Stephania, can you update us on Steven Jackson? Is it safe to assume that his limited role was simply a by-product of the Rams being blown out?
Stephania Bell (12:33 PM)
David: That definitely appears to be the case. SJax indicated that he had no setbacks with the quad following Sunday's game, but he also only carried it 4 times. And let's face it, they were getting hammered. So he certainly didn't get overworked and I think you can count on seeing a lot more of him this week.
Out in Afghanistan and hard to get news on Felix Jones. Do you know how bad his shoulder is and what can you expect from him next week? He surprised me in week 3 and I lost cause he was on the bench.
Stephania Bell (12:38 PM)
Jesse: First of all, thanks for checking in from Afghanistan. Sometimes it's hard to get news on Felix Jones right here too. We heard he aggravated the injury and that's why he exited the game when he did but before you beat yourself up over benching him, if you only watched the first half of last night's game, you would have thought you made a good decision. He did nothing. Then in the second half, he opened it up and most of his yardage (and points) came on two big plays. Definitely encouraging - but then came the injury setback. While I don't think at this point it keeps him out next week, this is going to be the risk going forward. Certain hits to the front of the shoulder, awkward landings, etc can be problematic, especially late in the game.
Did not see Kerry Collins take a blow to the head, but can wiplash effect of a hit cause a concussion without an actual blow to the head?
Stephania Bell (12:39 PM)
Tim: Absolutely. That is one of the things that often goes underappreciated, it's the movement of the brain in the skull, which can happen with a violent whiplash, that produces the concussion.
I am concerned about Moreno, which i know it's not surprising. However it seems like he should be okay but i am just not sure, do you have any insight in your crystal ball?????
Stephania Bell (12:41 PM)
Brian: Just get the feeling they're getting a little annoyed in Denver. Moreno was not completely healthy and apparently the team never intended to use him except in an emergency. Hard to tell whether he'll be ready for Week 4 - but it sure seems like they're leaning on MCGahee.
John (Los Angeles)
Has Sidney Rice become viable ROS, or is it only a matter of time before one well-placed hit to the shoulder knocks him out for the year?
Stephania Bell (12:44 PM)
John: Um, yes and yes. I think he showed he's a valuable target and he will be the go-to guy. But he also has a torn labrum. It doesn't "heal" on its own. He is doing well enough to play through it but he already had a setback once in the preseason so you know it could happen again. Play him while he's healthy but know you better have a backup plan.
Andrew (Iowa City)
Can we get an update on Dez He looked pretty bad last night?
Stephania Bell (12:46 PM)
Andrew: There were numerous issue with the receivers last night - even beyond their health. I don't think this quad contusion is completely behind him (although he's improving) but not sure that was the entire reason for the performance. He didn't run some routes particularly well.
Jason (Dallas, TX)
Could Sanchez's broken nose affect him at all this week against Baltimore?
Stephania Bell (12:48 PM)
Jason: It's a legit question. If there's enough deviation (of the deviated septum), it can make it harder to breathe, so if you're running around a lot, it can present a problem. Otherwise, probably not a huge issue. Although makes me wonder if he'll protect it.
Da Biz (No Cali)
Is it safe to say that Daniel Thomas will be the featured back going forward in Miami?
Stephania Bell (12:50 PM)
I think that's what the hope is eventually. But for now it remains Reggie Bush, per Sparano. Still, if Thomas keeps performing it won't be long before he actually gets named the number one back.
Can we expect Hillis back and ready to go?
Stephania Bell (12:51 PM)
Eric: Don't see why not. He was back at the facility Monday and he should play this weekend.
G (Madison, WI)
Any concerns over Best's delicate thigh??
Stephania Bell (12:54 PM)
G: I think you should be concerned about Best's ability to stay healthy, period. He has a lengthy significant injury history and it comes as no surprise that it was an injury that held him back somewhat later in this game. Doesn't inspire confidence although we know he has the potential to put up big points when not limited.
Is week 6 still the target for Amendola?
Stephania Bell (12:56 PM)
Still seems like a reasonable timeframe. Apparently he's getting a new brace to try out this week but they are not going to rush him back and risk very serious season-ending injury. I think it's going to take a couple more weeks.
Big Ben (Pitt)
Whats up with my boy Rashard? Any injury issues or is he just a product of our lovely O Line being banged up?
Stephania Bell (12:59 PM)
Have not heard of any injury issues for Mendenhall. But I think we've all seen some o-line issues. Not that he isn't partially responsible. But whatever it is that's not working, it appears to be system failure as opposed to injury.
Kevin (New York)
As long as Manningham passes his test should he be good to deploy this week?
Stephania Bell (12:59 PM)
Kevin: Key is passing all the tests.
Stephania Bell (1:00 PM)
OK - thanks for joining at the different time. Have to run now but appreciate all who stopped by. Great questions, thoughts and we will track those all throughout the week.Back here on Friday at 11 a.m. for more!
