Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
Great to be back with you. I have to get something off my chest and it is not basketgball. I am sick and tired about reading about prima donnas showing no respect for the uniform. If it is true that several Red Sox drank beer and played video games during games, that is embarrassing and humiliating to Red Sox nation. Terry Francona can manage for me anytime, Dustin Pedroia could play for me anytime. It is sad to see character assasination now as Francona looks for a job because he is good, good people. Guys like Beckett and Lackey have got to be kidding. There is something called professionalism. Understand what it is like to be a pro athlete when you are making millions of dollars.
Vandy beat North Carolina last season. They both have everyone returning. Why is North Carolina preseason higher than Vandy (i know it doesnt matter) and i think Vandy would go into chapel hill and win by 10 this year if they played.
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
That was before Harrison Barnes got going. That was last year. Barnes, Zeller and Henson became dominant late last season. I thought you would be happy that we have Vandy is the top six in the nation this year.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Even though you Cover College Basketball, did you ever knew Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis who Passed Away at the age of 82 on October 8?
Dick Vitale (11:09 AM)
Met him one time. Did not know him. He had a great passion and a sense of pride for the black and silver and for that I respected him.
How good is UConn and do they have a real shot to repeat?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
Yes absolutely. UConn is right with the heavyweights and they may have more talent than last year even with Kemba. Andre Drummond has a ton of potential and one coach told me he has Alonzo Mourning type of potential. Jeremy Lamb will have a solid year.
Who was your favorite player to interview over the years?
Dick Vitale (11:11 AM)
I would simply say I enjoyed talking to Shane Battier. He was always energetic and enthusiastic and had solid answers. I would also add out own Jason Williams and Steve Alford of Indiana.
Chris (Compton, LA)
Who will be the Big East POY?!
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I would say Jeremy Lamb and Ashton Gibbs would be the two to look at. Gibbs is the frontrunner but Lamb is a sleeper who can really score. The presence of Drummond will help his game.
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
I want to go back and say this about Francona...he was right when he said nobody made those comments when they were on a run of 81-40. Would you have something on your mind if your son and son-in-law were on the battle lines in Afghanistan? You would be scared every time the phone rings.
Mack (Chattanooga, TN)
How excited are you about Midnight Madness? Great way ro start the season, BABY!
Dick Vitale (11:15 AM)
It is always the tip-off, signalling the beginning. I will be on ESPNU giving commentary on teams and players to watch and diaper dandies. I will be at Notre Dame on October 22nd for a special basketball event introducing them. I will introduce Mike Brey and Muffet McGraw, who may have the best women's team in America this preseason.
Buck (Bloomington, Indiana)
How much of a blow is the injury to Creek?
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
It definitely hurts and I feel for Tom Crean and for the young man. This was supposed to be a season where Indiana made some noise and that is a blow.
tim (West Caldwell,, NJ)
Hi Dick, have been a big fan following you when you were in Detriot! Can you tell me your views on how Mark Tuergon is doing at Maryland. I hope he can keep the talent at HOME!
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
He had a big signing but he has big shoes to fill replacing Gary Williams. I am thrilled they are naming the courts after him. Turgeon is a winner from the day he stepped on the floor at Kansas, did a good job at Txas A&M and now he has to perform on the big stage. I am thrilled that we are honoring Gary, Jay Wright and Lou Holtz at our Dickie V gala next year, for details go to dickvitaleonline.com
Hey dicky v. What do you think is the best rivalry In college basketball? It has to be UofL vs. UK. Right?
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
Absolutely not...it is Carolina-Duke. It means so much in its conference and it means so much on the national scene. I know you are a Kentucky-Louisville fan and I respect that.
Do you think some of the kids who went into the draft early are sorry now that the lockout is costing them games?
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
I am sure they are a little upset because they want to play. They made the decision and you cannot look back in life. You cannot sit there and waste energy and time worrying about what you could and should have done. By the way, I am really honored to be nominated for the New Jersey Hall of Fame. That is where I grew up as a young guy. So many great people come from there, and if anyone wants to vote go to www.njhalloffame.comHelp me, the competition is tough baby!
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
Not bad, 10 Hall of Fames and I cannot run and jump and have a body by linguine. Get me to 200,000 followers on Twitter, baby!
Evan (Auburn, Ala.)
Is the secondary violation that IU committed a big deal?
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
No. That was jaywalking, let's go after the felons, paying for cars, buying players, changing transcripts. Come on, coaches do make minor mistakes. Mike Brey had a player named Tim Abromaitis who played two exhibition games and then redshirted and now will sit out four games this season. We should praise this kid for graduating already and being a great student-athlete.
Rich (Las Vegas)
What do you think of Kansas this season?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
Kansas will find a way to win. Thomas Robinson and Tayshawn Taylor are very good. Jayhawks may not have the same talent as past years but they are tough at The Phog. Bill Self has done a great job there. It will be tough to beat Kansas in Lawrence.
Cameron (Cincinnati, OH)
Dickie V, is this the year that Xavier finally reaches the Final Four? Do you think Tu Holloway will be a First Team All-American this season?
Dick Vitale (11:28 AM)
I have Holloway as a second team Solid Gold. You have to respect them and they play with a chip on their shoulder when they play the Golaiths. They will be very dangerous and a top 20 team in my mind.
Derrick (Gainesville, Florida)
What do you think about the Gators this season? Do you think they can contend for the SEC crown with the likes of Vanderbilt and Kentucky? Also, where do you think the Gators backcourt ranks with the rest of the country?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
I think Billy Donovan will have an explosive and exciting team. Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton have experience in the backcourt and Patric Young could develop into a force up front. Then add diaper dandy Bradley Beal and transfer Mike Rosario and they have a lot of offensive threats. It could be run baby run down in Gainesville.
Scratches (D'ham, NC)
Any chance the Alabama Crimson Tide makes it deep into the tournament this year?
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
I think the Tide will make some noise with the big three coming back, led by JyMichal Green. Anthony Grant has done a good job...move over Nick Saban, there is more to life than just football, baby!
Evan (Auburn, Ala.)
Dick: You are the man, BABY! How do you think my Auburn Tigers will do this year. We are adding a few players who had to sit out this year in Varez Ward and Noel Johnson, who I think will make a major impact. Any chance we take down the Crimson Tide and win the SEC West?
Dick Vitale (11:33 AM)
Tony Barbee is trying to rebuild down there, but I think Alabama has a better chance to do well in the SEC this season. I liked Ward when he played Texas.
John (NY, NY)
Coach V, Last year you had 30 teams from the power-six conferences in your top 40, how many will you have this year?
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
My revised top 40 should be going up today or tomorrow and yes, I have a lot of schools from the power conferences, though there are a handful of mid-majors in the equation too like Butler. I am so thrilled that the season is almost here.
Dick Vitale (11:38 AM)
I talked to some NBA people recently and I believe this lockout will get settled in the next few weeks. They will work out the split of money and the salary cap. For now, come over and check out college hoops. I am excited that the ball will be rolled out on the court and teams start practicing tomorrow. It won't be long before I am out in San Diego on the aircraft carrier calling North Carolina and Michigan State and Magic Johnson and James Worthy will be honorary captains. Believe me, college basketball will be bigger and better than ever this season with the return of stars like Jared Sullinger, Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones III and Terrence Jones. It will be awesome, baby with a capital A! See you next week.
