Dick Vitale (11:02 AM)
I love that college basketball is in full swing. There are great storylines ahead. When will Coach K get past Bob Knight. Can the freshmen live up to its billing? Will UConn. repeat as national championships? Heading to South Bend where I will introduce Mike Brey and Muffet McGraw at their basketball event. It is USC weekend so it should be a lot of fun. World Series had an exciting game one. Tony LaRussa is showing why he is a Hall of Famer making great move after great move.
How much credit should Kevin Stallings get with the high academic requirements to get into Vandy and still recruiting with the best of them? Just think if Vandy had standards like a Kentucky or North Carolina, they would be dominate year in and year out
Dick Vitale (11:05 AM)
He has done a great job in one of the tough jobs in America. Vandy is right there with Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi State in the SEC hunt. The suspension of Ezeli for six games could affect chemistry but this team will be right there in the league race. I like what Stallings has done there.
Terrell Lee (Gainesville,Ga)
What will it take for the Duke Blue Devils to win another national championship?
Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
Mike Krzyzewski said it best when he said the big players will determine their success. Perimeter play will be solid with Rivers, Curry, Dawkins and Cook. The inside presence of the three Plumlees will be a key to success for Duke. This is a top 10 team.
T.J. (Norman, OK)
Hey Dickie V! Got a question for you...Will Bob Knight ever return to coaching in the foreseable future? I have to believe the lure of coaching is strong & Coach Knight is one helluva coach.
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
Knight is one of the best of the best. He is already a Hall of Famer. I cannot speak for anyone else. He is young for his age and it would have to be Bob's call. At some point you get comfortable when you are in television.
Hey dicky v, Peyton siva was easily one of the top five pg's in the big east last year. How is he not on the big east first team?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I would not worry about preseason teams, I would worry about making the postseason team. Siva is certainly an important member of a Cardinals team that Rick Pitino feels will be a contender in the Big East. I think Louisville was picked third in the conference poll. Siva will be heard from.
Rusty (Indian Trail, NC)
Is there a better team top to bottom than the Tar Heels? It seems if they stay healthly and with the experience factor from last year that this team should be awesome baby with a capital "A"!
Dick Vitale (11:15 AM)
No, I pick them to cut down the nets at the end of the season. North Carolina, when you look at the personnel, has great talent. They have an NBA frontline, a Hall of Fame coach in Roy Williams, a great point guard in Kendall Marshall. There is new talent in Hairston and McAdoo too. The Tar Heels are the team to beat, but there are other legit contenders like Kentucky, Connecticut and Ohio State to name a few.
Harvie (Richmond, VA)
Why do you hate VCU?
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
That really disturbs me and blows my mind. How many people thought they would go to the Final Four. I don't have the word hate in my life. I respect what Shaka Smart did and I feel VCU will be on the rise again in an underrated conference (CAA). Come on, I do not hate anybody.
What do you expect from my Hoosiers this season? Top 3 team in the Big10?
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
The loss of Creek hurts, an outstanding athlete with 15 ppg. potential hurts. I think they can finish in the upper echelon in the Big Ten which would equate to an NCAA berth. Cody Zeller has star potential. I thibnk the key is to survive this season because they have more talent coming in based on future commitments.
DICKY V!!!!!!!! How bout them BEARCATS!? Are you as excited as i am for the XU-UC rivalry caused I'm ecstatic!
Dick Vitale (11:20 AM)
Xavier can play with anyone, starting with Tu Holloway. They can play with the Golaiths. Xavier is the creme de la creme in the A-10. Mick Cronin's team is one you don't hear as much about because of Connecticut, Syracuse, Louisville and Pittsburgh. Yancy Gates will be a key up front. Cincinnati and Marquette could make some noise in the Big East.
Evan (Auburn, Ala.)
Who wins the Big Ten this year? How deadly can Purdue be if Robbie Hummel can stay healthy?
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
Ohio State on paper wins the Big Ten. Hummel is someone to root for given with what he has gone through. If you have a healthy Robbie Hummel he can be a difference-maker. I hope he is able to play like he has in the past because he has been through so much the last two years.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will we see Syracuse & Pittsburgh in the ACC for this coming College Basketball season?
Dick Vitale (11:25 AM)
The move to the ACC will not happen right away. The timetable was supposed to be 27 months though it may be moved up.
Providence loves Ed Cooley already. Will we be seeing basketball at the Dunk like in the days of Ernie D and Marvin Barnes or are expectations too high?
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
Cooley did a very good job at Fairfield. Providence will eventually get better, though it is sucgh a tough challenge because the league is so deep. Think about thisa: Notre Dame was tabbed ninth in the preseason poll. That should tell you something. That said, Providence could eventually return to some prominence, though it will take time to get back to the Pitino days, or even further back to the Mullany, David Gavitt days of Friar backetball.
Tyler (New Hampshire)
Hey Baby, love the work and one of my favorite personalities. Do the Huskies actually have a shot at repeating? I know they lost Kemba but they still have Napier, Lamb, Oriaki, and the new big man comming in. I think they still have a shot, do you?
Dick Vitale (11:30 AM)
The loss of Kemba Walker takes away a big-play performer who loves the spotlight. He came through time and tim again during that great run through the Big East tournament and the big dance. When you look at Andre Drummond coming in, plus Jeremy Lamb will be a star, an instant scoring threat. With Oriakhi, Napier, Roscoe Smith, Boatwright and Daniels coming in...wow, this team could be better than last year's title team. I know Jim Calhoun is very excited about the Huskies and rightfully so. The fans in Storrs have a legit oontender to go back-to-back.
Dickie, should BC fans be excited about what Steve Donahue is building at The Heights?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
Donahue did something special at Cornell and now he is trying to rebuild the Eagles. I think it will take him a little time but he is an outstanding coach and teacher.
Hi Dick, with so many coaching changes in the ACC are there any programs/coaching staffs that stick out to you? Any guesses on who will rise up behind the top 2/3 (UNC/Duke/FSU)?
Dick Vitale (11:33 AM)
That is the big question down there. You are right, UNC and Duke are dominant but then it is up for grabs between Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Miami...very wide open and there are quality teams in the race. I would say Florida State has the best shot to finish third but it is up for grabs.
Matthew (Tennessee )
Who do you predict will be the year's Final Four teams?
Dick Vitale (11:34 AM)
Right now I would say North Carolina, Kentucky, Connecticut and ohio State would be the chalk picks. I would not leave out the likes of Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Duke, Pittsburgh, Memphis, Louisville...there are a lot of quality teams out there.
Dick Vitale (11:37 AM)
I am so excited about college basketball this season. There are so many quality teams out there and I cannot wait for it all to tip off. Meanwhile, if you want to see a feel good movie this weekend, check out the Mighty Macs, the story about Immaculata and Hall of Fame CathyRush, who was inducted in the same class I was in 2008. The school had 400 students, all-female and became a dominant basketball program. I spoke to Phil Martelli, who was at a screening with several Division I head coaches and they all were impressed with the movie. I love the underdog story. Have a great week, chat with you next Thursday.
