Andy Petree (12:33 PM)
Hello everyone! Pretty crazy race yesterday!
Can we officially say Jimmie Johnson is done?
Andy Petree (12:34 PM)
Yes. I think so. He can go out and win the next four I guess ... and he might .. but that probably wouldn't be enough with some of the other guys racing so well. 50 points is just too much to make up. It's hard to believe but he won't make it six in a row.
Timo (San Diego)
I don't know about you but I'll be happy to see someone else win the Chase. Getting kind of tired of Jimmie.
Andy Petree (12:35 PM)
Well, you're not alone. It's been five incredible years and you have to appreciate what they have done. But as a fan, yeah, it's nice to see some other guys hold the trophy. Jimmie has been a great ambassador for the sport but it might be time for a new champion.
Stanley Charles (Maryland)
Do you think Carl Edwards can hold on for the championship or will we see someone take over the lead down the stretch?
Andy Petree (12:36 PM)
I think Carl can hold on. He will struggle at Martinsville but yes, if I had to pick a favorite going into this week, I think I would pick Carl to hold on and win it all. He has some points in the bank that allow an average run. If he can finish strong this week, he should be able to close it out.
What grade would you give the Chase so far in terms of excitement? What final grade do you think you'll give when its all over?
Andy Petree (12:37 PM)
You have to give it an A so far. Definitely. I've been on these telecasts for five years now and this is the most exciting so far. It was great from the start and it's still really anyone's race. Four drivers within 26 points. The goal was to make the Chase more exciting and it has worked.
Dana (El Dorado Hills, Ca.)
Hi Andy, Talledega has apparently squashed a few more Chase driver's championship hopes, am I wrong to think this kind of a race (2 car tandem racing ) should not be part of the Chase ?
Andy Petree (12:39 PM)
No. I disagree. I think the Chase needs a variety of different tracks and styles. I would even like to see a road course thrown in. The champion should be able to peform in all of these. I think these races deserve to be in the Chase and I understand the criticsm but it is just part of the sport.
Jeremy (South Hill, VA)
What happened to Jeff Gordon on the final restart? The pit-road report was that Trevor Bayne sort of "owed" Gordon and so he decided to draft him, but then Kenseth came along and Gordon dropped like a stone. Was that the Ford-with-Ford politicking that was swirling through the garage area this weekend?
Andy Petree (12:40 PM)
Apparently there was a late communication coming to the green where Bayne was told he had to draft with Kenseth. Reagan's car was unable to push. Bayne had made a verbal agreement with Gordon, but that was overruled late in the going where there wasn't enough time to go back and say the deal was off. That is apparently what happened.
Good morning Andy. It sure was nice to see Blaney have a strong finish!
Andy Petree (12:41 PM)
Yes! That was a real good story, not only for Blaney but for Tommy Baldwin the owner.
Terry J (Atlanta)
What do you think of the growing Kyle Busch Motorsports kingdom?
Andy Petree (12:42 PM)
I don't really know what to make of it. He has been sucessfull in lots of areas, and done really well with his truck team. I expect to see similar success with his Nationwide team.
Ryan (Ventura CA)
Andy, What can be done from a aero stand point to break up this two car daft. Roof blades? Maybe shortening the rear bumpers (top to bottom)?'Thanks.
Andy Petree (12:43 PM)
There is going to be lots of talk between now and Daytona on that subject. It's complicated, how to 'fix' it. We will probably see some rules changes in hopes of not seeing it as much as we did at Talladega.
Rita Jean (California)
Good morning Andy. I'm a big fan! As a commentator, did you observe the media center drama recently with Stewart or Busch? Are the drivers seriously off the mark, or, are the media questions seriously lame?
Andy Petree (12:44 PM)
I'm not involved in the media center drama. I observe it sometimes like you do but I'm coming at it from a differnet angle so I can't really answer that.
Rob (Long Island)
Can Harvick get back in this thing?
Andy Petree (12:44 PM)
I think he can. I'm a believer. He is going to run well these next four races and this team is good at getting solid finishes. If anyone stumbles, he will be right there.
Ed (Kansas City) [via mobile]
Which driver has surprised you most in the Chase this year?
Andy Petree (12:45 PM)
It has to be Keslowski. He surprised me all year. He is constantly overachiving. He's right there to win the championship. Nobody saw that coming. It's pretty incredible.
Rita Jean (California)
Your Favorite city to visit during the season?
Andy Petree (12:45 PM)
Good question ... Talladega is probably my favorite track. City .. Indianapolis. Great city.
How mad is Kevin Harvick this morning? To get caught up in a wreck you had nothing to do with?
Andy Petree (12:46 PM)
He's frustrated I'm sure. But hard to be mad at anyone. He knew that was a possiblity so I'm sure he was mentally prepared for that kind of day. I don't think he's mad, just frustrated. He should still close out the season strong.
When you have to rely an another car to succeed in a race like they way they had to race yesterday, I don't consider it racing-your thoughts, Andy
Andy Petree (12:47 PM)
It's different. It's a different style of racing, like it or hate it. Some drivers and teams have learned how to do it better than others. The name of the game is getting to the finish line first. Boyer and Burton really pulled it off to perfection and I admire that. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the style but you have to appreciate those that can do it well.
Kenny (CT) [via mobile]
What drivers do you think realistically remain in contention for the title at this point?
Andy Petree (12:48 PM)
Edwards and Kenseth for sure. Keslowski I have learned to not count out. I think all the way back to Harvick have a realistic chance.
David Connor (Lincoln, NE)
Do you have a problem with the lead change bonus money promotions?
Andy Petree (12:49 PM)
I don't have any problem with them. Anything that promotes competition is good. No problem at all.
Andy Petree (12:50 PM)
Thanks for the questions! Stay tuned for Martinsville! More 'different' racing! Take care!
