Bryan Broaddus (12:01 PM)
Good morning or afternoon if that may be the case. Thanks for coming along for the ride here so lets get started.
Bryan, Love your analysis. Do you agree/disagree that as a coordinator Jason Garrett struggles to create mismatches for his best players - Austin, Bryant, Witten?
Bryan Broaddus (12:04 PM)
Its Garrett's job to create opportunity for his players just like you have said. I have worked into the 4th quarter of this game so far and Romo is right, there were not many options down the field. The first Smith sack, Bryant was open on the "in" route but not much else. Austin and Robinson were open at times but not near enough and when they were, the pressure was too much. Hard to call plays when the pressure is that rough on Romo.
I think after last nights performance... we need to starting looking at replacing our LB and move to the young guys like butler, Carter and of course Lee. We need more speed if our safeties are gonna play two deep coverages! whats your thoughts?
Bryan Broaddus (12:06 PM)
I dont think there are any questions that this team needs to get younger at ILB. Even before this game that needed to be the plan. I give Vick and the Eagles a lot of credit of making James and Brooking play coverage in this game. They knew that Ryan was going to try and take away the outside but that was great execution and game plan.
So what was the inside scoop on the Ryan/Ware incident? Anything carry on into the locker room after the game?
Bryan Broaddus (12:08 PM)
I think that NBC made something out of nothing last night showing Ware talking to Ryan. Guys I talked to this morning said that locker room was down but nothing further than that. Been on the sideline for many a day, that seemed more like a discussion than heated words.
Why do our CBs and especially Newman play so off of their WRs? Isn't the key to beating Eagles bump and run coverage?
Bryan Broaddus (12:10 PM)
I think that you are right and more so with Newman than Jenkins but it appeared that Newman tried to react better and tighten up in the 2nd half, something I will be looking at when I get done here.
Why was Rob Ryan playing the safeties so deep?? I know the eagles are a big play team, but didn't that show a complete lack of faith in our CB's??
Bryan Broaddus (12:12 PM)
I think you hit the nail on the head. On twiiter last night I said that Ryan needs to think about the depth of his safeties in the 2nd half. He was so worried about the big play that the Eagles took advantage of the space underneath.
Bryan,Are we really this bad ?
Bryan Broaddus (12:14 PM)
No you are not that bad. Give the Eagles some credit. Their season was on the line. Offensively this was going to be a tough game for the Cowboys because if they got behind, the Eagles can rush the passer. On defense, the tackling was the worst it was all season. Just need to regroup and be honest of what they see and make the right adjustments and move forward.
NYC Cowsheep (NYC)
Was last night a case of picking your poison for Rob Ryan, he didn't want to give up the big play to Maclin/Jackson. In return, it opened things up for McCoy and Celek. Also, are we in real trouble with Sean Lee out? Can Bruce Carter add something so we don't have to see James/Brooking out there, again?
Bryan Broaddus (12:16 PM)
I couldnt have said it better myself. We will find out more about Lee's injury today after he sees this hand specialist. Carter will need to and will play now, I really liked him at UNC. I will study the special teams and have a report on that later too.
can bruce carter cover better than james and brooking
Bryan Broaddus (12:18 PM)
I have seen Carter cover and yes, he can cover better than James but I will say this about Brooking, I was in total shock about how poorly he played overall, not just in coverage but in the run too.
Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)
What can the Cowboys do to improve the offensive line?
Bryan Broaddus (12:19 PM)
I really do believe that this team will need to draft a center but I would not be surprised if one day in the off season that they try Arkin at that spot too.
Whats the chance of Jason Garrett hiring and OC to replace his duties and just handle the Head coaching job?
Bryan Broaddus (12:21 PM)
That seems to be a very popular thought now. I don't see him doing that because the Owner/GM wants him to call the plays.
Why wasnt Brent active if we were playing the NFL's #! rushing team?
Bryan Broaddus (12:23 PM)
Maybe because you dressed two kickers or the thought was Lissemore has played the position before and wasnt bad. But let me offer this, Brent doesnt help in this game where the ball was run. Coleman, Hatcher, Spears all had a hand in what was going on in the running game.
MJ (Los Angeles)
Bryan can you explain the counter plays the Eagles ran in the running game? What could have been done to stop that backside cut by McCoy? because that backside hole was big enough for a big rig!
Bryan Broaddus (12:26 PM)
I am going to study the defense here in a bit but what usually happens is you get down blocks and a kick out. The Cowboys DEs were getting crushed inside, then the Ware, Spencer were having to take on blocks on the edge and you have the ILBs getting trapped inside with no safety help, you are going to give up big plays. The Cowboys hit the Eagles on two the same way.
Was Ryan's overagressiveness exploited by all of those dink and dunks screens, that Philly worked on specifically for the Cowboys defense, or was it just bad tackling and the players being out of place??
Bryan Broaddus (12:27 PM)
When you play the Eagles, you know you are going to get some screens. The way that Ryan played his safeties told Vick where he needed to go with the ball. I thought this was the worst tackling game that the Cowboys had played all year. Never seen some many misses in space.
I was thinking about this last night. Do players ever get down when they see certain referees and their crews doing their games?
Bryan Broaddus (12:30 PM)
I don' think that the players get down but the coaches might. When I use to work for the Cowboys I broke down our Ref each week and Parcells told the players in a meeting what calls they might see. Anything to help your players understand what you are up against in a game will help.
Todd(Pa) [via mobile]
What do you think of Kosier moving to center n then having Holland n Dockery at Guards. Costa is not getting it done I thought u should awlays play ur best 5 on the oline. Thoughts?
Bryan Broaddus (12:31 PM)
Kosier will not be moved to center because what he does for Tyron Smith pre snap on the majority of the plays. I asked Kosier about playing center last year, he siad that he had never done it.
Who is the more valuable player to the eagles, McCoy or Vick?
Bryan Broaddus (12:34 PM)
Great question...Vick hides a ton of problems when things break down for the offensive line but McCoy is a special player too. Reid has a real vision for the player. There are so many things he can do run or pass and puts a great deal of pressure on you but I am going to say Vick is most valuable.
I have been screaming about JG's play-calling for years now. Do you have it on good authority that there is NO chance of bringing in another OC? I think he is doing a great job as H/C, but it is like he is dyslexic when calling plays in certain game situations (Lions and Pats games)!
Bryan Broaddus (12:35 PM)
I would say that I have it on good authority that he is going to continue to call plays.
can you explain why only down 14 early garrett didn't run demarco more. He had another good game, only didn't get many carries. I would think running him and maybe allowing time for the eagles offense to cool off would have been a good idea, given philly's run defense is suspect. Is garrett a legit OC?
Bryan Broaddus (12:37 PM)
Murray did have some nice runs but I think that once the score got 14-0, then 21-0 that Garrett knew that he had to find a way to get some points fast. Bennett's INT was huge.
Why does Nnamdi get away with so many holds and PIs? Not only in this game but in the past as well?
Bryan Broaddus (12:40 PM)
Nnamdi gets away with those types of calls because the other times he is in such good position in the route the refs thinks that he is not holding. He is a smooth playing defensive back. Impressive the way he moves.
What do you account for the Cowboys main WRs (Bryant, Austin) lack of production? Playing Calling, Eagles DBs, Romo?
Bryan Broaddus (12:42 PM)
From what I have seen through 3 quarters is the Eagles did a nice job in coverage and the pressure mainly on the twist stunts, caused Romo a lot of problems. Surprised that the Cowboys were not ready for this. Its something that the Eagles do quite a bit from what I had seen.
I have yet to see more than one positive in keeping Bennett on the team........his size and perhaps blocking ability. Your thoughts?
Bryan Broaddus (12:43 PM)
Bennett is not even blocking well so cross that off the list too. For a man his size as you have said, he needs to be more dominate, he is not.
Can Murray do enough to prove himself as the fulltime running back in Dallas? Will Jones always be a better passing back then him and possibly become a 3rd down back?
Bryan Broaddus (12:45 PM)
Will be interested how Jones is used when he does get back. There is a side of me that believes that he will get early carries to try and create explosive plays, then bring Murray in to hammer on the defense but it also too can go the other way. Murray is proving he needs to get the ball.
nate keyman (SF)
it's bailey still the cowboys place kicker or david going taking over again.
Bryan Broaddus (12:45 PM)
Bailey is your kicker, but very short rope for Buehler from what I was told.
Hello Bryan! I understand the Cowboys were down by a lot of points last night...but why would they only rush Murray 2 times in the second half? He averaged over 11 yards per carry in the first half. Teams always think they have to pass when they are down and the Boys were actually moving the ball on the ground last night. Thanks!
Bryan Broaddus (12:47 PM)
I think you answered your own question. Once the game got out of hand, the only way to fight the Eagles and the clock was to throw the ball. If the game was closer, you would have seen plenty of Murray running the ball.
Brian S. (TX)
Hi Bryan, How long till we get to find out if Carter can play at ILB? It looks like Philly really went after Brooking and James last night and they were exposed.
Bryan Broaddus (12:49 PM)
The Eagles had a nice plan for James, Brooking and even Lee. Carter will get a look this week, there is no doubt in my mind.
where was witten the whole game? shouldnt he have had a field day with the eagles weak linebacker core?
Bryan Broaddus (12:50 PM)
I will say this about Witten, he struggled in this game to get open and when he was, Romo really wasnt as accurate as he needed to be. The Eagles did a nice job of mixing coverage on him. Their LBers played him well as did their DBs.
Please tell me Mcbriar isn't out for the season.
Bryan Broaddus (12:52 PM)
We have not heard anything about McBriar yet we have locker room at 530pm CST and Garrett at 615pm.
Nate (Nacogdoches (Texas))
So Bryan im a life long cowboys fan and a all pro "should have done this" fan. haha Anyway i have a couple of questions for you. First is why not take brooking out and just put in carter to spy on vick and mccoy. I mean its bad when even my wife say OMG who is number 51 running around out there with noone even within 15 yards of him, does he know what hes doing? I saw alot of carter at UNC and knew that he was special when we drafted him. Second with are team right now what would you feel would be the areas we need to look at in the draft and who. I feel that O and D lines will need to be looked into as well and secondary.
Bryan Broaddus (12:54 PM)
Your wife sounds like she needs to go on the road and scout these players for a living. I do agree with you about Carter and his days at UNC. This staff will find ways to get him in the mix this week. With the injury to Lee, you are going to see him play in some form or fashion.
Bryan Broaddus (12:56 PM)
Thats all the time I have for today. Thanks for all the great questions. Will have my Scout's Eye from this game on Tuesday. Please check out ESPN Dallas.com then or catch me on 103.3 FM ESPN as well.
