Jeff Dickerson (2:01 PM)
Another busy day at Halas Hall following a Bears win. Let's get it started.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that there will be any suspensions due to the Lions-Bears Brawl on Sunday?
Jeff Dickerson (2:03 PM)
D.J. Moore appears to be the only candidate for suspension. But here is what Lovie Smith had to say moments ago:"First off, you shouldn't retaliate on something that happens, and the officials are supposed to be looking at the instigator in situations like that," Smith said. "D.J. was not [the instigator]. Stafford grabbed him by his helmet, you can't do that either. In those situations, I can understand the officials throwing out one guy, D.J., but it seemed like both guys should've been thrown out in that situation. Things did get out of hand a little bit. We're not looking for that. I think there are plenty of times during the course of the game you can show how tough you are...who's the most physical football team and all that. I think that happened yesterday.' "First off, we had defensive players who were exchanging, offensive guys were coming out on the field, so a lot of that happened with our players," Smith said. "But at the same time you don't want to see one of your teammates just getting attacked by more than one guy. A lot of times there is a lot of shoving going on and not a lot is being done, but that wasn't the case. The NFL, with modern video, you have a chance to look at everything on what happened. That is what the NFL is doing, that is what the league is doing." "I'm anxious to see exactly what they rule based on what everyone did."
Jeff Dickerson (2:05 PM)
Sorry for the crude cut and paste job. But I felt like Lovie summed it up the right way. You shouldn't suspend Moore because he didn't start it, Stafford did. Fine him if you want. He deserves it. But he shouldn't be forced to sit for a game.
Jpulido (Chicago Il)
DO you think lance brigg's power shot to megatron should have been penalized? Why cant the league penalize officials for bad calls?
Jeff Dickerson (2:06 PM)
It's a bang, bang play, so I don't fault the official for throwing the flag. But it should've been pick up after the refs got together and talked about it. Briggs hit was clean, did not deserve a penalty and definitely not a fine.
Rematch: Bears vs Packers NFC Championship game??
Jeff Dickerson (2:07 PM)
It's not out of the question.
With Chris Williams out and Edwin Williams stepping in how long is Carimi out for so we can move Louis to LG?
Jeff Dickerson (2:08 PM)
Let's see how Edwin Williams does before we consider sliding Louis back inside to guard. Carimi is probably a few weeks away from coming back. Remember, he hasn't played since Week 2, so it's going to take some time.
What's the scouting report on Edwin Williams?
Jeff Dickerson (2:11 PM)
5 career starts. 3 starts at RG for Bears last year. Can play center and guard. Tice likes him. He's been active in eight of the nine games in 2011. Not the worst option in the world at LG. Would you rather put Frank Omiyale back inside?
Jeff (Houston, TX)
What are the chances that the team pays Forte and franchises Briggs instead? Or vice versa
Jeff Dickerson (2:12 PM)
Briggs is under contract through 2013. He is not a candidate for the franchise tag.
Are you guys warming up to the play of Major Wright yet?
Jeff Dickerson (2:13 PM)
Slowly. All you can do is make the plays that come your way, I guess.
I'm sure you've seen this question a few times today, but...What do you think the NFL will (and should) do about Stafford's role in instigating the kerfuffle after his 4th INT?
Jeff Dickerson (2:13 PM)
Stafford should be fined.
Can the Bears make the playoffs and win if they have to play the Saints or the 49ers on the road
Jeff Dickerson (2:16 PM)
Of course. But you can make an argument the Bears have a better shot to win if they face S.F. Didn't go so well in the Superdome the first time around for the Bears.
Earl Bennett (Chicago)
Will I get a fine wearing orange shoes again?
Jeff Dickerson (2:18 PM)
Yes. You musthave cut a deal on the side with Nike to pay this last fine.
Lovie Smith (Chicago)
You behind this team or against this team?
Jeff Dickerson (2:18 PM)
John (Oak Brook)
The cameras showed Lovie looking for Jim after the game for the usual coach handshake, but Jim was nowhere to be found. Does anyone know if he ever showed up or did he truly follow in the footsteps of Isaiah Thomas and the Pistons' Bad Boys?
Jeff Dickerson (2:20 PM)
I actually stayed upstaris in the press box to witness the postgame handshake. Schwartz found Lovie and they had a nice handshake and quick chat. No issues after the game with coaches or players.
Justin (Des Moines)
Can we call Charles Tillman Optimus Prime now?
Jeff Dickerson (2:22 PM)
Excellent game from Tillman. Lovie mentioned him again today. Even though Stafford had the broken finger and wasn't as sharp as usual, they still targeted Calvin Johnson 19 times. Tillman held him to 7 catches for 81 yards. Not bad.
Should I be happy the Bears are 6-3 and a playoff contender, or angry that the Bears are 6-3 and not a true Superbowl contendor...something Jerry Angelo could have rectified this past offseason?
Jeff Dickerson (2:24 PM)
Ryan, be happy at 6-3. Trust me. Just get to the playoffs and anything can happen.
Do you think the Lions are dirty players after the game yesterday?
Jeff Dickerson (2:25 PM)
I think a few members of the team play dirty. Which really is a shame because the Lions have so much talent on its roster. They don't have to play like that.
Sam (Mt. Prospect)
When/where can we find out if Briggs was fined for his hit?
Jeff Dickerson (2:26 PM)
NFL announces fines on Friday. I don't believe Briggs is going to get hit with a fine for that hit on Calvin Johnson.
Iceman (Nashville TN)
What's the story on Cory Wootton this season? Will he contribute before the year is up? If not, can Nick Reed and/or Mario Addison provide a pass-rush spark to give Pep a breather?
Jeff Dickerson (2:28 PM)
Wootton is healthy, just not active on gameday. That's a bad sign. It means the Bears think they can win without him.
The more I watch him, the more I like him. How important is DJ Moore to this defense?
Jeff Dickerson (2:30 PM)
One of the top playmakers on the D. A very critical element to the unit. Although it was nice to see Corey Graham step in at nickel and make a pick after Moore got ejected. Even if D.J. gets suspended, the Bears would probably appeal it. So I think it's a good chance D.J. plays against San Diego on Sunday.
Jeff Dickerson (2:31 PM)
Thanks everybody. I'll now turn it over to Mike. He'll chat with you until 2. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Michael (2:31 PM)
Hello everyone. Let's get it cracking.
Guy sick of national media (Chicago)
So did the Bears win this game or did the Lions lose the game much like Eagles did last Monday? No respect for these guys.
Michael (2:33 PM)
C'mon man. The Bears won both those games, and did it in very different manners. A win is a win in my opinion. I think too much gets made of the perceived national perspective of the Bears.
can the bears sweep the AFC west in their next 4?
Michael (2:35 PM)
It won't be a cakewalk, but it can be done. Denver and Kansas City are pretty much awful. And I can pretty much guarantee now that Tim Tebow won't be able to do all that running around against the BEars. Not happening. Oakland looks a little better now that Carson Palmer is sort of finding a rhythm. And we saw how the Chargers looked last Thursday night. So yeah, definitely the Bears could sweep the AFC West. But a lot will depend on how this team handles some of its injuries on that offensive line.
Say Mills (Chicago)
How many catches does earl bennett have so fat this season and could reach 50-60 before the season is over
Michael (2:37 PM)
Earl's sitting at 14 catches. With nine games remaining, he'd finish with just 59 catches if he were to average 5 grabs per game.
Izzy (New Jersey)
who do u think will the hardest opponent from the afc west? i think the chargers tight ends usually have great games against the bears do u agree?
Michael (2:37 PM)
No, I think the Raiders are the most dangerous of the team's next opponents given the progress being made by Carson Palmer. But I will acknowledge that the Chargers seem to play great in November under Norv Turner.
Vic F (Springfield, VA)
Practice squad call up or street free agent signing to fill C. Williams' spot?
Michael (2:39 PM)
Good question Vic. I'm pretty sure the Bears have been in contact with agents about potential street guys to come in as backups. I'm not sure any of the guys -- not even Levi Horn -- are particularly ready to fill in if needed. I will add however that the Bears were actually planning to move Horn onto the active roster a few weeks back.
Jason (Los Angeles, CA)
Did Forte suffer any injuries again the Lions. On that 40 yard run he had late in the game Forte didn't appear to be as fast as usual. Maybe he was just tired?
Michael (2:40 PM)
I was thinking the same thing, Jason. Forte isn't a guy who lets people run him down from behind. I'll be sure to ask him about it Wednesday when we see him in the locker room.
Julian (CA )
Do you still think the Lions are good enough this year to make the playoffs? I'm telling you here and now they will be 7th in the playoff hunt.
Michael (2:40 PM)
I don't, Julian. They've got a tough remaining schedule.
Am I crazy to be looking at the Bears remaining games and thinking that they should go 6-1, at least? Looks like a weak stretch of teams (save for GB); any trap games?
Michael (2:42 PM)
That would be a very bold prediction. Four of the last six games are on the road, including the Christmas matchup with the Green Bay Packers. Regardless of how bad an opponent is, it's always very difficult to win on the road.
What's Chris Williams' contract status? It seems like he was just starting to come into his own, tough time for a season ending injury.
Michael (2:44 PM)
Chris has one year remaining on his deal, and will be paid a base salary of $1 million in 2012.
Bears have 9 games left? What am I missing here?
Michael (2:44 PM)
It's me missing. My fault, 7.
The Bears look like they are the only NFC team capable of beating the Packers right now. Would you agree?
Michael (2:45 PM)
I don't agree with you, and that's only because the Packers haven't been playing especially well on defense. That leads me to believe that there might be more teams than the Bears capable of defeating the Packers.
Are we to think we might have a decent FS in Conte? My feeling is I need to see more...
Michael (2:47 PM)
Mike, I'm agreeing with you on this one. I need to see a larger body of work before I start making proclaimations. But I will say that what I've seen just recently has been very promising. Major Wright and Chris Conte add a playmaking element to that seconday that hasn't yet been fully tapped.
Hey, what up with you playing spoiler during the chat this weekend on gameday. You doing that again next week? I will have some bets to line up if they delay again...
Michael (2:48 PM)
My fault on that. There is always that television delay. So we can't really help the spoiler stuff on our game day chats or Twitter.
Tim Tebow (Denver)
Is Julius Peppers as scary in person as he is on TV? I'm dreding the prospect of running into him in Week 14.
Michael (2:48 PM)
Nope. Julius is actually a really laid-back dude, and very intelligent. Much different in person than on the field, Timmy.
Michael I am really impressed by the way Lance Lewis has played, but lets be real, he isnt a long term solution for the Bears. Any chance Lewis slides over to LG and Gabe comes in at RT?
Michael (2:50 PM)
That's probably exactly what's gonna happen once Carimi is able to return from that arthroscopic surgery. Besides that, they're gonna need Lance Louis there with Chris Williams out.
Taylor (Chicago )
Whats up with the release of Nick Reed and signing of Chauncey Davis? Any reasoning behind that?
Michael (2:52 PM)
Davis has a lot more experience. He's played in 96 games with 25 career starts over six seasons. Atlanta also plays a system very similar to what the Bears run, which also makes Davis a better fit.
Melvin (North Carolina)
Despite the great improvement on the OL, do you think Bears will still try to upgrade during the off season?
Michael (2:53 PM)
I do Melvin because you've always got to replenish the talent pool. Too many times this team has neglected that offensive line, and it's come back to bite them in the butt in recent years. I think the Bears have learned from that and will approach things differently moving forward.
How about the play of Tim Jennings over the past couple of weeks? Is it my imagination, or is Marinelli calling for more press coverage from our corners?
Michael (2:55 PM)
They are calling a lot more Cover 3, and Cover 1. They do a great job of disguising coverages to make it appear they're playing two deep. As for Jennings, I remember just a couple of weeks ago people on here were saying that the Bears should release him. Well, he got the game ball against the Eagles for last week, and came back Sunday and put together another strong performance.
Jeff Joniak (Chicago)
Just how ridiculous is Devin Hester?
Michael (2:55 PM)
You say it all the time, Jeff. And you're never wrong.
Key contributor this year (and big upgrade) Adam Podlesh. Leading the NFL in yards per return. Agree?
Michael (2:56 PM)
Huge contributor. I asked him last night if he'd eaten gunpowder before the game and he laughed. Adam's also a good dude off the field. Covered him in Jacksonville.
I have packer fans telling me that the only time the Bears win is when the other team plays their worst game...what can I say back? I am sick of it!
Michael (2:57 PM)
Google all the Packer jokes out there. There are a ton of them. Seriously, teams don't just arbitrarily play badly. Most of the time, the other team had a lot to do with it.
why was hester given an IV?
Michael (2:58 PM)
He was dehydrated.
Do you see any of the Bears' remaining games being flexed?
Michael (2:59 PM)
Because of all the Tim Tebow love, I could see the Broncos game being flexed.
has roy williams played well enough to stay in the starting lineup?
Michael (3:00 PM)
Good question, Dan. The problem though is I think you honestly have answer another question first: Has Johnny Knox played well enough to take Williams' spot?
Michael (3:01 PM)
Folks that's my time. We appreciate you stopping by to chat with us. Come check us out again later this week. We'll definitely be chatting again. Enjoy the rest of the day.
