Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that Oklahoma will be good enough to play in a Bowl Game?
William Wilkerson (3:02 PM)
If you are talking about a BCS game then it might be tough if they lose big to OSU. But otherwise they are good enough to go to the Cotton Bowl.
Sooners have now won 2 in a row. 3 looks like a certainty. How many will it be before the Horns can win one? Will they be competitive in the next 3 years?
Carter Strickland (3:05 PM)
Ok, first off taking over for William here we had some tech issues. But to answer your questions, the Sooners might win out and the Horns might lose out. Both are real possibilities. After watching Texas against Missouri I have real doubts it can pull it together against any of its last three opponents.
Jared Gibbs (Arlington )
With the QB struggles that have been going on all season and the lack of progression from Ash and McCoy, How good are Connor Brewer's chances of coming in and competing for the starting job as a true freshman?
Carter Strickland (3:06 PM)
He has a very good chance of coming in and starting next season. The issue is going to be is Brewer better than Jalen Overstreet? Those two may battle it out if Ash does not get things going in the final three games.
Scott Templee (El Paso)
If Jaxon Shipley doesn't play this week against Kansas State, should he be put on the shelf for the rest of the year and have surgery to fix the extent of his knee injury?
Carter Strickland (3:07 PM)
Texas is playing it close to the vest on Shipley. But I would not bet on him being ready this week. He is listed second on the depth chart against behind DeSean Hales. I know Shipley was up and jogging after he injury but i have seen people with ACL tears do that. The injury looked very bad on the replay.I think he can come back this season. But I have my doubts about this weekend.
John Barton (Houston)
Texas is still in the running for some top national prospects (Peat, Collins, Agholor, Armstead) Which of these guys does Texas need the most? and which one does Texas have the best shot to sign?
Carter Strickland (3:09 PM)
Peat would be a huge get for Texas. This is a guy that everyone is after and he could be another someone that gets playing time as a true freshman. He gives you an anchor on the line for at least his sophomore and junior years. Now Collins is the guy Texas needs more than anyone. They have to have safeties and he is a good one.
Teddy "Big Shoes" Jones (Odessa )
If Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron are not able to play this week, How slim are Texas' chances of even being competitive against KSU's tough defense?
Carter Strickland (3:10 PM)
Very slim. Hills had some holes against Missouri but he does not have the vision of the speed to hit those holes. Brown and Bergeron are difference makers. Texas has to have those two to win any game. The offensive line also believes in those two runners and will block harder for them.
Will Williamson (Waco)
With what this team has gone through in this season with playing freshman who have since grown up fairly quickly, How good could this Texas team be next season with 4 of 5 starting OLinemen coming back and a years worth of experience for most of the freshman.
Carter Strickland (3:12 PM)
No doubt this team is going to be very good in 2013. I think they will be respectable in 2012, but 2013 is the year. By then Texas should have the QB thing figured out and everyone will have several years of experience. 2014 is a question mark because some of these freshmen may go pro early.
barron tryon (dallas,tx)
defense and special teams will have to win this one for us...offense cant do it alone...p.s. where is demarco cobbs?????
Carter Strickland (3:13 PM)
Cobbs is wearing a cast to protect that forearm. Any time that bone shifts in there it is very painful. He played some but the bone shifted again and he had to be pulled back out. No doubt the only way Texas wins from this point forward is if the defense can hold the opponent to 14 or less points.
Look into your crystal ball and tell me who is starting for Texas at QB next year? Who finishes the season as the starter?
Carter Strickland (3:15 PM)
Wow that is a tough one. OK, if Ash does not improve at all over the next three games - and he might not - then the QB thing is thrown wide open again. It could be Overstreet. Think about that for a second. You have Gray, Brown, Bergeron and then Overstreet under center. Maybe Texas will hire Paul Johnson to run his offense.
What do you think about trying some spread/option run offense with DJ Monroe and Goodwin in the backfield? Kinda like LeMichael James. They need to get something going and I think this would work untill MB and JB are healthy.
Carter Strickland (3:17 PM)
I like the idea of that but the issue with D.J. is he does not know all the plays. So it is hard to put your trust in him. And Goodwin is not natural back there taking snaps. If they were going to do that i like Mykkele Thompson or Mile Onyegbule at QB because those guys know the position. But I doubt they make that move this late.
Doug (SLC, UT )
What in the world happens to the BCS if Oklahoma beats OK State and Arkansas upsets LSU?
Carter Strickland (3:19 PM)
We all grin and tell the university presidents ''I told you so."In all seriousness it could be a mess. Teams are going to start lobbying to get in and coaches are going to promote their teams. It is going to be a bunch of used car salesmen 24/7 out there trying to get the voters to pick their team higher in the poll. And the computers, lord only knows what they will do.
Purple Pillow (King)
Your thoughts on the new big XII alignment.
Carter Strickland (3:21 PM)
Well, it's OK. It was stronger before. TAMU is just a better overall program than TCU and WVU. Missouri is about the same as those aforementioned schools. I think the Big 12 is going to need to take two other schools and then someone prop them up so they become more powerful football programs. You can't lose Nebraska and TAMU and replace them with WVU and TCU and say you are still a great conference.
You think Overstreet will get a chance to be a bon a fide qb, or will he take over the role Fozzy had this year (although be more of a passing threat)?
Carter Strickland (3:22 PM)
If he can make all the throws then I think he can be a QB. That is a big IF. I have yet to see Ash or McCoy make all the throws necessary. But then look at Kellen Clemens - he does not have a huge arm and he got it done in a Harsin offense. And he doesn't have great wheels. So if Overstreet even has a decent arm, he will get a shot at being the full-time QB
Randy Riggens (Tyler, Texas)
What are the chances Texas loses the next three games? And if they do lose those three games what are the chances David Ash is the starter next September?
Carter Strickland (3:24 PM)
Chances are good that Texas drops these last three. They have shown no ability to score against teams with winning records. OK, except UCLA but they don't count because they lost to Utah. But think about it: Texas scored three offensive touchdowns in its three losses. It scored two touchdowns in its next toughest game, BYU. That is not going to cut it against KSU, TAMU and Baylor.
Tipton Held (Kilgore, Texas)
Is Cayleb Jones an immediate starter next year? What can we expect to see from him?
Carter Strickland (3:26 PM)
No doubt. Texas probably wishes it had him this year. If Jones can prove that he is reliable in blocking, he is going to be able to come in and start. Texas is going to need someone to go along with Shipley. Davis is only a deep threat. Goodwin is not an every down wide receiver. Jones could be the guy. Unless DGB comes in. Then Jones may have to take a step back.
Bubba Gump (Arlington, Texas)
What is the deal with Texas and the JC recruits this year? Are they going to bring some of those guys into the program?
Carter Strickland (3:27 PM)
Texas has started to look more to the JCs, but this is a one year deal Mack Brown has said. Texas is looking at offensive and defensive linemen. Denico Autry is a kid who may visit this week. Very good defensive end.
Carter Strickland (3:29 PM)
Thanks for the time today guys. Sorry for the issues at the start. We will get our recruiting expert William Wilkerson on here soon. William also covers the team and has a lot of insight there. We will be back next week at 2 p.m. CT. If you have any questions between now and then hit me up at the mailbag on HornsNation.com
