Jason Grey (3:01 PM)
Hey everyone - chatting for 30-45 minutes from an AFL press box on the final day of the regular season. Internet connection has been spotty, but will do the best I can. Let's get to it.
Jason Will Tyler Pastornicky be on the opening day roster for the Braves in 2012?
Jason Grey (3:04 PM)
I still think the Braves will wind up finding someone in the free agent market or trade so as not to have to go with Pastornicky out of the gate. Not quite sure he's ready yet. Do think he can stick as a regular with defense and speed compensating for his lack of pop.
How much should we read into Mike Trout's AFL struggles?
Jason Grey (3:06 PM)
Nothing. If I am counting correctly, 156 games plus a couple of All-Star Games and spring training this year. I was surprised he wound up coming here to the AFL after his big league summons, as I thought he was going to wind up being pulled. He was very clearly tired, getting towards exhausted at the end, and also battled a minor shoulder ailment, so I'm not discounting him at all. No worries.
Jonny (Los Angeles)
Thoughts on Stephen Strasburg next year. Innings limit? Expectations?
Jason Grey (3:08 PM)
I don't think performance is going to be an issue, just gauging the number of innings. I'm expecting 160-175 of something close to his 2010 level of play. Like Zimmermann this season, not sure they would want to push the innings beyond that.
Nate (Fort Worth)
AFL MVP Mike Olt: 3 Q's. With Beltre at 3B, you see him playing 1B or a corner OF, is he MLB-ready and what's his upside?
Jason Grey (3:10 PM)
No, but it's not a problem the Rangers need to worry about just yet. Olt's not ready to hit big league pitching yet. You don't want to move him elsewhere, because you're taking away one of his main assets, his 60 glove at third on the 20-80 scouting scale. He can play good defense there. The power is big-time, the contact may be an issue. One other scout said to me he thought he was the "next Chris Davis," but I'm a little more bullish on his prospects.
Who do you like better next year and long-term - Latos or J Zimmermann? Can only keep one for the next 5 seasons.
Jason Grey (3:11 PM)
If it's close (and it is), I would probably go with Latos because of Petco. The one caveat there is he's had some shoulder trouble. It seems in some ways you may feel a little "safer" because Zimmermann has already had a major arm injury, if that makes sense. But I'd probably go Latos because of the park factor.
John (St Louis)
Shelby Miller going to see the field in St Louis next year? With Matheny as the manager is seems like STL will be more open to younger players, sooner.
Jason Grey (3:12 PM)
Yes, I don't think Miller starts the year in St. Louis, but I think he finishes there, and if I had to guess, would say he plays about half the year in the big leagues if things progress as they have.
Donny (Chantilly, VA)
Do you think Bryce is ready to start the year in the majors? Should he?
Jason Grey (3:13 PM)
No, and no. But not far off, I could see a late 2012 callup. I've maintained from the beginning that I see him as a more of a guy that makes a big impact in 2013 as opposed to 2012. My guess is he starts the year back in Double-A and we'll see what happens from there.
Bob Babooey (Flushing)
What's your thoughts on Lucas Duda as an everyday OF in 2012?
Jason Grey (3:17 PM)
I'm a little higher on Duda than some, because I believe he can hit right-handed pitching pretty consistently in the big leagues, hopefully enough to overcome his defensive liabilities. He doesn't have great bat speed, but his pitch recognition is solid, and he started to look to pull the ball more for power. Could be a nice under-the-radar player next season with regular at-bats.
Drew (Little Rock)
Is it time for the A's to give up on Chris Carter and Michael Taylor?
Jason Grey (3:20 PM)
I don't think you can use that term, because it's not like a team is going to give much of anything of value for either of them given some of their struggles. Although with an athlete like Taylor especially I'm always a little hesitant to abandon ship too quickly, as there were at least some positive strides again this season. I thinl it's a situation where the A's put themselves in a position to have to count on production from either, and if they get some, it's just a bonus.
Jason, in my dynasty league I can keep my entire starting lineup, which 4 OF's would you keep out of Ethier, Bruce, Maybin, Gordon, Austin Jackson and Boesch?
Jason Grey (3:21 PM)
I think you keep the first four.
Does Carlos Martinez also pitch in St. Louis in 2012? Who's upside do you like better Carlos Martinez or Shelby Miller?
Jason Grey (3:23 PM)
No, Martinez -- despite his upside -- is further away than that. I don't see him in the bigs in 2012 because of the need to keep working on his command and secondary stuff. Love the arm and easy velocity, though. Higher upside, but Miller has a better floor.
Tom (Saint John, NB)
When will Anthony Rendon end up in the Majors? Fantasy relevant next year?
Jason Grey (3:25 PM)
No, I think we need to be careful about expecting too much too quickly out of recent draftees, Rendon included. I also think a likely transition to second base at some point (even if he starts his pro career at third as the club has stated) may delay his ascent a little bit. I think you're looking mid-to-late 2013 at the earliest.
Thoughts on Cespedes?
Jason Grey (3:29 PM)
Haven't seen him obviously except for video, and I try not to go too in-depth on players I haven't seen live. That said, the scouting reports I've gotten on him in the past from guys that have seen him international play point to an above-average regular with intriguing power.
Brian G (Santa Barbara)
What are your favorite Spring Training/AFL stadiums? Least favorite?
Jason Grey (3:31 PM)
Surprise is a great stadium, but is very difficult to get to, so I'm not a huge fan of going there. Big, big fan of the new facility in Salt River for the D-backs/Rockies. Big league.
Obviously the stuff is there - big fastball velocity, two-plane powercurve and an average changeup - and he was known to be a project due to his size/rawness out of HS but do you think Betances ever shows enough command to allow him to become a frontline starter?
Jason Grey (3:33 PM)
The times I've seen him I've always viewed him as projecting to a late-inning reliever, but I'll admit I haven't gotten a really good extended look.
Thoughts on Wil Myers' AFL performance? Does it justify his sub-par season was mostly injury related?
Jason Grey (3:35 PM)
Slow start and some inconsistent swings due to getting out on his front foot and losing leverage, but really started driving the ball consistently by the end. I feel pretty confident in saying that I think his struggles this season were largely injury-related, as his left knee was still not 100 percent at the end of the year, and that's a leg he puts a lot of stress on with his swing mechanics.
Keeper question: Would you rather keep Price at the cost of a 6th round pick or Heyward at the cost of a 4th? Can keep one for the next 2 season.
Jason Grey (3:36 PM)
Price; better value, more certain production at this point. (And I still love Heyward and am not jumping off the bandwagon.)
Jason Grey (3:37 PM)
Guys, I have to run and catch the end of this game, and the internet in the box isn't cooperating very well. Thanks for checking in, I appreciate you taking time out of your day. You can also check me out on twitter at @Jason_Grey. I also try to answer questions there when I can. Thanks!
