Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome back as we get ready for Thanksgiving. At the end of the chat I will have my pick and Ivan Maisel's as well. He is 9-3, I am 5-7 so far. Last weekend was a wild one and gives more proof that the people who run college athletics must have four teams competing in a Final Four, two games on New Years Day and then the championship apprxoinately 11 days later. Can you imagine the interest in the last two weeks. However the rule must hold that no more than two teams from a single conference. We don't like to be like baseball, where the same teams have the most money.
Beano: Wisconsin impresses me. They were a couple of Hail Mary passes away from being undefeated. Do you think their balanced attack could give LSU and Alabama problems?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I think either of those teams would beat Wisconsin, and maybe Arkansas would too...There is a big difference between the SEC and the Big Ten in my opinion. Wisconsin is a good team and you are correct, two Hail Mary passes have kept Wisconsin from being number two in the BCS standings right now.
Bob Davie and Rich Rodriquez are back...how long before Irban Meyer joins them?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
You hear that Urban Meyer is likely to be the coach at Ohio State next season. I said that was a possibility eight months ago. That doesn't surprise me.
Max (South America )
When are we going to quit overrating Notre Dame and giving them unfair advantages to start the season off with .It is ridiculous how highly rated they are ever year at the begining of the season. Can we for once in our lives let them earn it the old fashion way ? They might respect it more and profit from it better that way too,
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
There is some truth to what you say as they have a lot of advantages, including their own TV network. I am one of the people that is probably guilty of that at the start of the season. It is hard to believe that the Irish have not won the national championship since 1988 and they might lose four games this season.
Karl (Ballinger, Texas)
Beano, Which game do you consider to be the best rivalry game, and why? I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Army-Navy, followed by Michigan-Ohio State. Alabama-Auburn is by far the most bitter rivalry, even more than Duke-North Carolina in basketball or Red Sox-Yankees in baseball. It is more bitter than the history of the worst divorces. In other words, it is very bitter.
Ben (Blacksburg VA)
Hey Beano, do you think the Big Ten deserves two BCS teams this year? Both of the projections ESPN analysts put out gave them two, and I couldn't disagree more.
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
You can make a case for that. The SEC will get two for sure. Houston will be a wild card team so there will be two openings. Oklahoma-Oklahoma State loser may get one. It could get interesting for the last one. Wisconsin could be one of those teams, hard to say right now.
Daniel (Dodge City)
How good of a game would Oregon and Wisconsin be in the Rose Bowl? I think that could be better then the National Championship.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Very interesting matchup. First Wisconsin has to beat Penn State this week and Michigan State in the Big Ten title game. Don't make your travel plans quite yet. I do think Wisconsin will beat Penn State this weekend.
Cory (Geneva, IL)
Notre Dame was ranked around 16 to start the year and they are now #22. That isn't exactly very far off.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Again, Notre Dame, with a win over Stanford, would move up a few spots and be even closer to the preseason ranking. They may be out of the top 25 if the Irish loses. Notre Dame has had very tough losses this season.
Isn't it strange to see Texas-Texas A&M with the Aggies leaving for the SEC?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Yes it is. Very strange what is going on in college athletics and realignment. By the way, it is not a loss, but when you lose. In 1936, Minnesota lost to Northwestern early in the season. In November, Notre Dame beat Northwestern. The Big 10 winner was Northwestern but Minnesota won the national title.
Rich (New Jersey)
Stretch of the Imagination - If Arkansas does pull off the upset of LSU, who'll go to the Championship Game - Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford all with 1 loss or Houston @ 11-0?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I will wait until it plays itself out. Alabama, if it beats Auburn, will beone of the two teams. That is one reason we have to have four teams in a playoff. If the BCS commissioners cannot realize that, then they are going to be like baseball. If the SEC has two teams in the national championship, there may be a cry for four teams in a playoff-type setting next season.
Mark (Chapel Hill)
How did NC State do that to Clemson?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
That is why they play the game, as Chris Berman says. Hard to figure. Go explain Iowa State-Oklahoma State or Texas Tech-Oklahoma. It happens and that is why we follow sports. If those things did not happen, we would all die of boredom.
JohnnyI (The Adirondacks, NY)
Beano, I like the blog! Has CBS contacted you yet, for the last segment on 60 minutes? You would be perfect for the slot, your blogs / chats / podcasts are excellent! Hold out for a longer segment! Go Notre Dame!!!!
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I appreciate the kind remark but there is nobody that can replace Andy Rooney.
Beano...the BCS is solely to put the top 2 teams in the NC game. It doesn't care about conference title games or rematches...just getting the two best teams. If we had a 8 team playoff, there would be rematches every year...not sure why there's any backlash against Bama outside of not wanting the SEC to be guaranteed a 6th NC in a row before the game is even played. Clearly LSU and Bama are the two best teams this season...and it's not even that close.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
I agree with you. If LSU is #1 and Alabama is #2, then let's have the rematch and so be it. If we have two teams from the same conference, they are the two best teams and that is that.
Daniel (Dodge City)
Who gets the Heisman right now if the season ended today? RG3 or someone else?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
I really do not know. I might be tempted to say Griffin.
do u agree with me that va tech is one of the most overrated 1 loss teams in a long time? i think they lose to virginia this weekend...........
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I am not going to say they are overrated. I do thinl Stanford should be ahead of them in the polls but the season is not over yet. We will see what happens. Virginia has a shot...more on that later.
Surprised that Arizona hired rich rod?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I have no opinion on that. He did well at west Virginia, did poorly at Michigan. so it is two out of three depending on what he does now. Arizona is not an easy place to win. he clearly wanted to coach again. One drawback is facing USC every year.
Daniel (Dodge City)
If Boise State had not of lost to TCU would they probably be the #2 team right now? I mean this would have worked perfectly for them to get into the National Championship as a non-BCS team.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I am not sure how the computers would have had it, but that is very possible. Boise State did lose to TCU when Gary Patterson went for two.
Did Miami do the right thing by giving up a bowl bid this season? Ohio State said they would not do that
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
I think Miami decided to do it to show some remorse. The question is, will Penn State do the same thing?
Daniel (Dodge City)
Has Andrew Luck really lived up to the hype that was given him at the beginning of the season?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Look, Stanford is 10-1. It is not easy to win at Stanford, and he has done that consistently. It was 19 years between Rose Bowl bids for Stanford a while back.
Should Case Keenum get some more Heisman love?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
How sad is it that Rutgers may win the Big East and get a BCS bid? Schiano continues to schedule the weakest out of conference games (NC Central, Army, Navy, Ohio) he can find to pad his schedule. Sad.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
If Rutgers wins the conference they will go to a BCS bowl and get beaten easily. The Big East is the weakest of the BCS conferences.
Do you think Golden will leave Miami after one year for the PSU mess?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
If Golden is offered the Penn State job, I think he will take it. I predicted a while back that one day he will be the Penn State head coach. I thought it would be 10 years from now, but that has changed.
Bren (Berkeley, Ca)
Beeno, allow me to sound the hypocrisy alarm on the SEC. Only 5 years ago after #2 Michigan lost on the road to #1 Ohio State. The game was a thrilling back and forth battle with the Buckeyes coming out on top. The arguments we heard from our southern friends were ?a team that doesn?t win their conference shouldn?t have a shot at the championship? and ?it was already settled on the field?. After the 9-6 kicking exhibition ?of the century? between LSU and BAMA the SEC is humming a different tune. I?ve heard very little out of ESPN and other sports outlets about the SEC?s stance has changed since 2006?why so silent?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
The bottom line is there is an out now with the computers. If you want to do it right, let Las Vegas pick the two best teams to play for the national title. Your point about Ohio State and Michigan is well made.
Daniel (Dodge City)
Collin Klein has been amazing this year why doest he get more attention in the Heisman voting?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I have no idea. There have been great governors in Montana and Idaho over the years and they have not gotten consideration for President...those things happen. Klein has been a difference-maker for a surprising Kansas State team.
Do you think Georgia can compete with whoever comes out of the West in the SEC Championship game?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Georgia does have a shot. hey have the crowd with a "home field". I do not think Georgia will win, but as Chris Berman says, that is why they play the game.
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
By the way, Thanksgiving will not be the same if Texas and Texas A&M are not playing each other on the hoilday or the holiday weekend. That is a sad commentary about what is going on.
What do you think about the extra wild card spot added to the MLB schedule?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
One more day of agony. Does anybody really care. If I was elected President, baseball would begin on Memorial Day and end on July 4th. The owners of baseball have ruined the game.
Troy (Montrose, CA)
Do you think the Big East should just give up football and become a basketball league like the Big West? The Big East looks like a penny prostitute because they are desperate and pathetic.
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
It may eventually become a basketball-only league. Maybe it should give up on being football driven. We will see who ends up there.
How about Bobby Petrino for national Coach of the Year?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Fair candidate. Absolutely he should be nominated. I did not like the way he left Atlanta, it was without much class, but you are right, he deserves consideration. Playing Alabama and LSU on the road is pretty tough.
Beano Cook (3:57 PM)
OK, it is time for the pick. Ivan is 9-3 and he took USC to win easily over UCLA, 42-14. I am 5-7 and picking Virginia 31, Virginia Tech 28. Thomas Jefferson was able to get two good tickets to the game. Happy Thanksgiving.
