Edward Aschoff (11:58 AM)
Greetings from cold, wet and gross Atlanta. Light snow is in the forecast for tomorrow, but it will be long gone when LSU and Georgia come to twon for the SEC title game this weekend. Let's get to chatting.
Ed, please tell me there's a chance Charlie Weis won't be back next season. His offenses have never looked good in college and Tom Brady has obviously made this man an obscene amount of undeserved money. Any hope that Muschamp will let him go?
Edward Aschoff (11:59 AM)
Well, from everything that Weis said last week, he's in Gainesville for the long haul. I don't think Muschamp would fire him or any assisitants after just one year -- the first year of Muschamp's tenure. Sure, things have been awful on offense, but changes need to be made in personnel and scheme first before we starting talking about firings.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
How upset are you in Gainesville today after hearing reports of Urban Meyer agreeing to coach Ohio State have been confirmed just one year removed from heading your program?
Edward Aschoff (12:02 PM)
Florida fans have the right to be upset, considering the way he left, but Florida was never Meyer's dream job. This is a homecoming for Meyer and this was the first chance he had to go and coach there. Meyer won two national title games at Florida, so Gators fans should be grateful in that respect, but it's no surprise that some feel jilted. No problem with that. Some probably also feel pretty sad that Meyer couldn't stay longer.
Melvin ingram and Jadeveon Clowney (Columbia, SC)
Hey Ed, how do you think Tajh Boyd likes us now? He tweeted last week that we were just an average defensive line here in Columbia.... If we are average, then I don't think he wants to play a team with a good defensive line then!
Edward Aschoff (12:02 PM)
Boyd will no doubt be sending you guys apology notes in the mail.
Honestly what kind of chance do you give Georgia this week?
Edward Aschoff (12:04 PM)
It's slim, but Georgia does have the defense to frustrate LSU. The Tigers don't exactly have the most exciting offense, but they do have a very powerful running game. That has been the difference all year and we have yet to see a defense contain this running game. LSU even ran well against Alabama. Also, Aaron Murray hasn't faced a secondary like LSU's. The good thing for Georgia is that the pressure is off. They have nothing to lose at this point.
If you had a Heisman ballot, what would you 1, 2, and 3 look like?
Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
1. Trent Richardson 2. Andrew Luck 3. Robert Griffin
Do you see the SEC experiencing any backlash if UGA wins this week and there are two teams that didn't win the conference in the BCS NCG?
Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
Sure, but that won't erase the fact that the SEC will bring home its sixth straight BCS national title. I don't think the SEC will or should care about any of that.
I'm a little bothered by all the media feeling Alabama is the shew in for the national title game. Yes they only have one loss, but they already had their shot at LSU and lost. Was not the game Alabama and LSU played a few weeks ago hyped as the winner going to the national championship and the other not? I am not a fan of giving non-conference champions shots at national championships. And correct me if im wrong, but according to Alabama's head coach Nick Saban, he feels the same. In 2003, he said that in his opinion a team that is not the champions of their conference, does not have the right to be national champions. So, because Alabama is not SEC champs, both Nick Saban and I believe that Alabama should not go the the BCS championship game, and LSU should go to the BCS championship game only if they win the SEC championship game.
Edward Aschoff (12:07 PM)
That's not how the BCS works. The BCS doesn't take into account past quotes from coaches. The BCS' job is to pick the two best teams in the country and I think you'd have a hard time finding a team better than either LSU or Alabama at this point. This is the system we have and that's how it's going to pan out at the end of the year. Even if LSU loses this weekend, the Tigers will likely still play for the national championship.
T-Hipp (City of Dreams, SC)
Ed, South Carolina is by far the queitest 10-2 team in the country. With all of the set backs with Garcia and Lattimore do you think Spurrier deserves some considerations for SEC Coach of the Year?
Edward Aschoff (12:09 PM)
He has done a great job this year. Considering how bad the offense has been at times and the loss of his starting quarterback and running back, Spurrier did a great job of keeping this team together. He will definitely get some love, but I still think there are a few coaches ahead of him on the list. Remember, this was a team that just about everyone picked to win the East this year and that didn't happen.
What are your thoughts on Dooley? Should he still be coaching or should the Vols look for a real coach? What does he have to do next year to stay off the hot-seat?
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
I still think it's too early to tell. Now, he finally doesn't have to worry about Lane Kiffin's dark shadow on the program. He can finally go out and really recruit players. This team had basically no depth and a slew of injuries, especially on offense. This team wasn't poised to win this season. That being said, losing to Kentucky in a game that the Vols NEEDED in order to make it to the postseason is a major set back. That isn't a good Kentucky team. It looks even worse after that Super Bowl-like celebration after the Vandy win. I think he has to show vast improvement next year or he will officially be on the hot seat.
Ed, this whole season you have been dogging the dawgs... now that we have made the SECCG I can only assume you expect a thrashing from LSU. However, we have a top 10 ranked defense in virtually every category, and have quite a few playmakers on offense. If we win, do you think LSU still deserves a shot at the BCSNCG?
Edward Aschoff (12:14 PM)
Not sure where I have been "dogging" the Dawgs. After they beat Auburn I declared them the best team in the East, and still think that. The schedule wasn't too taxing and you can admit that. This team struggled at first and then improved after the 0-2 start. It was a steady improvement. Go back and read what I wrote. Also, I do think LSU will win this weekend. The Tigers have done nothing this season to make me think otherwise.
Mark Richt (SEC country)
Hey Ed, LSU has had a tremendous year and defensively will be the best team we play, any insight on how my boys can move the chains?
Edward Aschoff (12:16 PM)
Aaron Murray. LSU's secondary is extremely skilled, but it can get a little over aggressive at times. Arkansas was able to move the ball through the air well early against the Tigers, but couldn't do much after the second quarter. He has to play well because Crowell has proved he can't stay healthy for games.
George Bush (Texas)
LSU won the battle against Alabama already. And what is their reward? 1 less week to prepare, 2 weeks less rest, and face risk of injury that Alabama does not have. This puts Alabama at a huge advantage and they get this advantage by loosing to LSU earlier in the year. This is not FAIR, this is proof why the BCS is a flawed system. How come this is not being talked about more?
Edward Aschoff (12:18 PM)
I have never gotten the "unfair" talk about the rematch. It happens in ever other sport around the world. So, it just so happens it's going to happen in college football. Big deal. These are the two best teams in the country and Alabama deserves to be in just like LSU. LSU's would have had to beat someone in the national championship, so because it's Alabama shouldn't matter. LSU knows the same about Alabama as Alabama knows about LSU.
joe (kansas city)
Any comments on Petrino and the hogs after a disappointing finish to the regular season?
Edward Aschoff (12:21 PM)
I still think Arkansas is good team, but lacks defensive depth. The Hogs just didn't have enough energy to keep up with LSU's running game. The defense ran out of the gas and crumbled. Depth has to be improved. But that offense is still pretty potent, but when LSU's defense had all that time to rest it proved to be too tough and too fast. As for Petrino, he did well considering the injuries this season, but needs to focus on the front seven in recruiting. Also, not a fan of his postgame incident, but it happens.
Nick (Baton Rouge)
I know right now everything is focused on the Championship games that are about to happen, but looking forward to next season, do Texas A&M or Missouri have any shot to contend for their respective division titles?
Edward Aschoff (12:22 PM)
I'm not sure Texas A&M has the defense to contend next year and I'm not sure Missouri is ready either. This will take time. Both will be meeting much faster and more physical defenses in this league. Recruiting will be key in the next couple of seasons. No Playstation offenses in this league.
If UGA beats LSU, and Ok State whips Oklahoma, Alabama could possibly fall from a "lock" to the BCS Championship, to the Capitol One Bowl against a third tier Big 10 school. I GUARANTEE you all the Alabama players and coaches would trade their "bye week" for a chance to win the SEC and lock up a title shot with no doubt.
Edward Aschoff (12:23 PM)
Don't see that happening at all. OU's loss to Baylor hurt any chance of a OK State win meaning much this weekend. Alabama is pretty much a lock.
Ed...Great rookie season my man, you did a fine job covering the SEC....Now down to buisness, people are not giving Georgia a chance and as a die hard Dawg fan I understand why, but do you think if Georgia can swing another big recruiting class this year that Georgia is going to be solid and a power house for the next 2 to 3 years, at least?
Edward Aschoff (12:25 PM)
I can only thank those around me (did I sound like Trent Richardson??). Georgia has always been able to recruit well, but it's been the production on the field that has suffered. I think that this season will help generate some positive momentum in recruiting and in the attitudes of the players. But when Georgia has hype, the Bulldogs don't always live up to expectations.
Ed -- James Franklin for COY?
Edward Aschoff (12:26 PM)
Not if Les Miles wins the SEC title game and the national championship. Franklin has done a great job in his first year and I think getting Vandy to a bowl is excellent, but there were still moments where that old Vandy look crept up. Vanderbilt should have beaten Tennessee and Arkansas, but the little mistakes cost them. Plus, his postgame antics haven't helped his image. Les Miles has had to deal with so many off-field actions, but still has the best team in the country.
Nick (Baton Rouge)
I know we're almost certainly losing Mo Claiborne to the NFL, along with some key seniors in the secondary/linebacking corps and the vets Lee and Jefferson under center, but is there a chance that with all the young talent, next year's LSU team is even better than this year's?
Edward Aschoff (12:27 PM)
That's what a lot of people around that program think ... scary, huh?
Assuming Oklahoma St wins this weekend, my opinion is that they would have a better resume than Alabama and should play for the NC. A loss is a loss is a loss so when you compare their quality wins Oklahoma St. has them beat. Why is everyone so bent on giving Alabama a mulligan?
Edward Aschoff (12:28 PM)
Two words: Iowa State.
George Bush (Texas)
By your argument above, why dont we just give the trouphy to LSU because they already beat the 2ed best team in the nation. Come on the response was a total cop out. It is BS that Alabama gets this advantage. I understand why they are going to go, but that does not take away the fact that because of the way the BCS is set up, it has created an undeserved advantage to Alabama. I just wish this would be talked about more. There has never been a better example season to support a playoff system than this one
Edward Aschoff (12:30 PM)
Cop out? I basically said that I disagree with you. LSU players don't care, so why should you? They are the ones playing. They are the ones who will have to beat Alabama twice. They want to beat the best and Alabama is the best. LSU has to play someone and it's Alabama. It happens in every sport. If it happened in a playoff would you still be so upset?
Clay (Birmingham, AL)
Edward, I feel like Alabama is being hated on worse than Tebow right now. Is there any additional insight that we can provide to educate others on why they are the best option for the BCSNCG?
Edward Aschoff (12:32 PM)
I never thought I'd ever hear that to someone or something was hated more than Tim Tebow these days ... I look at the body of work. Alabama dismantled the SEC's best offense in Arkansas. It has the nation's best defense and the top running back. Alabama's only loss was to the No. 1 team in the country and it was by a field goal. I, like many other voters, just don't see another team stacking up against Alabama on the field, except for LSU.
Barack Obama (Washington D.C.)
George Bush sounds like an Auburn fan. Every LSU fan I've been approached by occupying Wall Street say they welcome an Alabama rematch and are excited.
Edward Aschoff (12:33 PM)
Finally someone gets it.
Why has the blog pretty much given the Gamecocks the shaft since winning 10 games this season? 3 over Clemson in 3 years, and overcoming some major adversity to get there? I mean come on guys
Edward Aschoff (12:34 PM)
Not sure how we've slighted the Gamecocks. We've praised the defense and said the offense hasn't been great. Two truths.
Oklahoma State and Alabama are both undefeated in regulation. Both lost in OT at home. There will probably be one difference. Oklahoma State could be the Big XII Conference Champs while Alabama can't win its own division. How is that fair? Last I remember a couple of teams have been totally dismissed from a spot in the NCG for the sole reason that they didn't win their conference.
Edward Aschoff (12:34 PM)
Like I told another OK State supporter: Iowa State.
Yo Ed, love the chats you do! Do you foresee any offensive staff changes on the Vols? We've definitely hit bottom for sure. Chaney's playcalling absolutely kills me at times. No imagination! Our running game is embarrassing, us Vol fans have always prided ourselves on having a good running game, no matter what! For that matter, we dont even have a running backs coach! On another note, I love our defensive staff. With what they've had to deal with, they deserve a raise.
Edward Aschoff (12:36 PM)
Honestly, I think the offense will be fine. The running game was awful, but the personnel isn't great. Gotta get better bodies there. But if you take away the injuries to Justin Hunter and Tyler Bray, I think Tennessee is headed to a bowl game. Those were major losses for this team and it hurt the mental focus of this team. Big difference when those two aren't in the lineup.
Edward, what are your thoughts on the Ole Miss coaching situation, and who do you think will be the new head coach?
Edward Aschoff (12:39 PM)
Ole Miss seems like such a tough place to win at. But with all the talent around the state and close to Mississippi, the right coach can be successful. This program needs a total makeover. The next coach has to be given a lot of time to completely rebuild that program. It is in a lot of trouble. And the thought that this is an Alabama or an LSU is ridiculous. That attitude needs to be scrapped until Ole Miss actually wins some games. I think Ole Miss has the ability to make a big hire, but it shouldn't just jump at the first guy who shows a lot of interest ...
Edward (Jackson, MS)
How does the SEC bowl situation shake out if Georgia upsets LSU? Can you give us your projections?
Edward Aschoff (12:40 PM)
Georgia to Allstate Sugar Bowl, Alabama and LSU to the national championship.
Will Atlanta [via mobile]
Has Trent Richardson done enough to win the heisman?
Edward Aschoff (12:41 PM)
I think he has. On the final national stage before bowl season, he ran for a career-high 203 yards, had a receiving touchdown and and just wore down Auburn's defense. He averages 136 yards on the ground against SEC defenses. That right there is more than impressive. I think he's at the top at this point.
Ed, why is everyone so hung up on the "you have to win your conference" thing? If the 2 best teams in the country are in the same division let alone conference, you are penalizing them for affiliation are you not?
Edward Aschoff (12:42 PM)
Stop agreeing with me! This is supposed to be a debate!
I have been doing really good answering everyone's questions today. I deserve a raise and a pat on the back.
Edward Aschoff (12:42 PM)
Me too. Well said.
Johnny Cash (Fayetteville, AR)
Assuming Georgia loses to LSU, where do you see Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina landing in their bowl games all with 10 wins?
Edward Aschoff (12:44 PM)
I think Georgia heads to the Outback Bowl, Arkansas to the Cotton and South Carolina to the Capital One Bowl.
Jakobe (Athens, GA)
Hey Ed, can you give us your best explanation as to what a 10-2 Georgia team has had trouble rising in the BCS poll past 13th and had even been passes by teams like Michigan State with less impressive late season victories?
Edward Aschoff (12:45 PM)
I think it has to be the schedule. It wasn't especially hard and everyone knows that. Also, the computers hate Georgia. Just win ... but I guess that hasn't really mattered ...
Joshua (Dawg Country)
Why no love for the Dawgs? I mean we win by two scores agains the second leading rushing attack in football, a bigger win than we were suppose to. Our losses came to highly ranked teams in the beginning of the season. Other teams loose to lesser opponents and stay ahead of us, and we fall in the rankings. Why no respect?
Edward Aschoff (12:48 PM)
I respect Georgia. I think the 10 straight wins is great considering the negativity launched his way by (cough, cough) Georgia fans :) I think Aaron Murray is playing like the top quarterback we expected him to be and the defense has been top-notch. But Isaiah Crowell is extremely inconsistent and fragile and I'm not sure if the offensive line can hold up against LSU's front seven.
Sam (The Bayou )
How did you feel about the honey badger this weekend?
Edward Aschoff (12:49 PM)
I think he played one of his best games in an LSU uniform. He just has great ball instincts and can improv all over the field. The thing that made his performance even better was the fact that he played at safety for the first time ever.
Iron Bowl (Bama Nation)
When will Auburn's wounds heal from that manhandling beat down they took.
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
Don't sleep on these Tigers next year. I think that talent starts to show more.
Why was the conversation so different in 2007, when Georgia was looking at a No.2 BCS ranking... but that was unthinkable because they didn't win their division or conference? Now it seems that winning the conference means nothing.
Edward Aschoff (12:54 PM)
I think that this year you see so much divide from the top two teams. I'm not saying Georgia didn't deserve a shot back then. Ohio State lost to Illinois late that year and still wound up in. I can't speak for voters, so I'm not sure why they liked Ohio State more than Georgia. LSU lost two, but winning the SEC was enough in the end.
How you can say Auburn will be better next year? There have been no improvements throughout this year on either side of the ball, and in fact have gotten worse offensively
Edward Aschoff (12:56 PM)
I think Auburn will be better. Those youngsters hit the wall this season. Now, they have more experience to go with. Unless the coaching slips, I think you'll see a much better Auburn team next year. Don't sleep on them, Edward.
do you think there will be a play off system any time soon? does this season help or hurt the chances?
Edward Aschoff (12:56 PM)
Who knows. We can only hope, but I honestly don't know.
Want to talk about BCS unfairness? What about inability of Arkansas to play in a BCS Bowl? How crazy is that? They earned the opportunity by playing a difficult schecule and then only suffering defeat from LSU and 'Bama.
Edward Aschoff (12:57 PM)
I wrote that last week. I still think Arkansas could beat a few teams in the top 10. Shame is right.
Edward Aschoff (12:58 PM)
OK guys. I have to cut out early today. Great talking to you all. Talk to you next week.
