Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Good afternoon as the college football regular season comes to an end and we will find out bowl matchups after the weekend. I am 5-8 while Ivan Maisel is 10-3...we will have picks at the end of the chat. I have a feeling tickets are available for UCLA-Oregon on Friday night.
Terry (the 'Burgh)
When did the Heisman Trophy change (for the worse, IMHO) from being awarded to the most outstanding player to (now) the best player on the best team? Which are NOT the same thing, necessarily. Why should a player?s Heisman stock drop if his team loses? The most egregious example of this was Jason White winning over Larry Fitzgerald, a real travesty.
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
It is just the way it is. I am not saying it is fair but these days, that is the way it seems to work.
Mark (Baton Rouge)
Isn't it unfair that Alabama is sitting at home and still likely in the BCS title game?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
That is also the way it is. What is Alabama supposed to do, say no if they finish #2, not play in the BCS championship?
Will Coach Leach get one of these job openings? I think he should get another chance...
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
Yes, I agree with you. He should get another chance and I believe he will. Washington State is reportedly interested.
Will Alabama be passed by Oklahoma St. if they beat Oklahoma?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Probably not. It could only happen if Oklahoma State blows out Oklahoma. The loss to Iowa State is worse than Alabama's three-point overtime loss to #1 LSU.
what is your take on the Urban Meyer to Ohio State
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I said it could happen during the first chat after he left Florida. It was an obvious move in my view if the interim coach, in this case Luke Fickell, if he did not win enough games.
Mr. Cook: Seems like the general feeling is that Penn State will end up in the Insight Bowl. Do you feel that is where they belong?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I am not sure which bowl they will be invited to. The committee that Penn State put together to select the next coach is a joke in my opinion. You are trying to satisfy too many people. I will tell you the committee should be four people....interim AD Dave Joyner, one individual from the University who is not in the athletic department, plus two former football players from the school, and one should be Jack Ham.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
In my opinion, they should pick Tim Murphy from Harvard, if he would accept. That is my opinion. Coaching at Harvard isn't a bad job at all. It doesn't involve recruiting 12 months a year.
Beano, who do you think ILL should hire?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
The guy at Rutgers, Greg Schiano, might be a good coach. I understand he is interested and it is a mystery to me why they don't win on a more consistent basis there at Illinois. It is incredible that they were 6-0 at one point this season.
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
When Ron Zook was 6-0, he was a hero. Now he is out of a job.
You predicted Meyer to Ohio State this past spring. What are this weekend's lottery numbers?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
I play the powerball and I am lucky to get three numbers a year.
DOWN (in the South)
What has happened to Clemson? Have defensive coaches just figured them out or are they just a young, worn out team? Thanks.
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I don't know what the answer is. Clemson is a bit of a mystery. That is the case many years. They are up and down and this year s no exception. It is hard to figure them out. The last two weeks have been tough. How some credit for the job Steve Spurrier has done? South Carolina beat Clemson even without Marcus Lattimore.
Are you finally off the ND bandwagon? This isn't 1940 anymore. They looked terrible against Stanford. Stanford's D line had their way all night. ND is what it is now...a mid level program.
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Put it this way, I have overrated Notre Dame. I would not call it a mid-level program. There is something wrong when they are not winning more games. I will say this, the four teams they lost to have a combined record of 36-11.
National Coach of the Year is???
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
There are a few good candidates. If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma, Mike Gundy deserves consideration. Bill Snyder of Kansas State, Les Miles of LSU and Brady Hoke of Michigan are among the top guys in my opinion.
Jay (Livingston, MT)
Do you think Colorado moving to the PAC did them any favors?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
No. No favors at all. They have to play USC every year and that is no favor.
Will Brian Kelly start out on the hot seat in 2012? Or do they really like him up there. I am guessing another 8-4 season won't cut it for the faithful.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
I would not say a complete hot seat but the seat is warm. Road games against USC, Michigan State and Oklahoma are tough in 2012.
Scott (New York)
Let's say LSU loses to Bama by 3 in OT. Who would you vote for to be the National Champ?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
The winner of that game. Fair or unfair, that is for the national title.
When will Army finally beat Navy?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
We will see. They will play on December 10th.
Why is everybody so caught up in Alabama making it to the BCS "unfair?" Does the country really want to see OSU, who lost to a terrible Iowa State team, get destroyed by LSU? Alabama is #1 in every major defensive category, played through the SEC, and has not lost a game in regulation. People stop with the bias and let the two best teams play.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
My answer to that is, the teams ranked 1 and 2 will play, and that is OK by me.
What is your take on the fiasco at MD with Edsall? He was so good at CT. 9 wins to 2 cannot make you feel like your job is secure.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Look, it is one year, but the heat in on already. He lost me last year when he did not return with his Connecticut team after the bowl game, instead going to Maryland for a press conference without even talking to his team. That showed no class in my opinion.
tommy conwell (key west)
When will Al Golden get Miami to a BCS bowl game
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I don't know. I think he thinks he will, and he would not have extended his contract if he didn't think so. We also have to see what the sanctions are following the investigation to see how long Miami is ineligible for a BCS bowl. To answer your question, will he ever get to a BCS bowl with Miami, I would say eventually.
Sam (West Virgina)
How do you think WVA will fair in the Big 12? Any chances of ND going to the Big 12?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Not well in football. West Virginia made an interesting move. Notre Dame will have a problem as an independent at some point, so the ACC or part-time with the Big 12 are possibilities. I don't think the ACC will accept the Irish on a part-time basis.
Any thoughts on the Red Raiders and Tuberville?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
The defense must improve.
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
It is tough when you play Oklahoma and Oklahoma State every year...
Will Kirk Ferentz's name be mentioned for the Penn State job?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I would have to think Penn Satte should be interested if he was. I am not sure that he is.
beano...im so angry with you "experts"..one year yall say 1 thing then another you switch...why in 2007 when uga was hottest team, ranked #3 before a loss to #2 west virg did we not move into the #2 spot...yall said it was because we didnt win our division...now bama is in same spot...?? yall even dropped uga 5 spots for that to #7..is bama gonna drop 5 spots cause they didnt win division ??if uga beats lsu on the field, isnt that like a playoff which is what yall want...??? wouldnt uga move on as the #1 team in the #1 conf, that noone could beat lsu but if we do...why is noone saying it should be uga in the bcs champ game...???we would be on 11 game win streak, hottest team in country again...the best 2 loss team in country, not to mention lsu had 2 losses in 2007,,so that argument of 2 losses should be thrown out the window...if ok state beats oklahoma.. shouldnt it be uga vs ok state for bcs champ game...???
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Georgia will not be in the national title game, no matter what happens in the SEC title game. You cannot just erase the first two losses of the season, it is that simple. Sorry you are so angry with the experts.
Didn't Arizona trump the field by getting Rich Rod before all of those other jobs opened?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
See me next year at this time and ask that question.
Myths and Flops (AKA Big 10)
Are you picking a free ticket and 75 dollars this Sat. in Indy?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I am not sure of your point.
Alexander (Cardinal fan)
Didn't Andrew Luck do enough to win the Heisman? Did you vote yet?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I will et you know next week how I vote. I am leaning towards Andrew Luck for my vote as of now. I am leaning to Richardson for second. Griffin my be number three, we will see.
ben (los angeles)
Beano, if the Pac 12 "championship" game isn't the biggest joke then lets hope it ends in a tie.
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
What about overtime.
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
USC was not eligible, UCLA was. This is certainly no interest in the game outside of Oregon.
To Missouri and A&M, just look at what BC has done in football. Leaving for a different conference doesn't always work guys
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
I don't understand if these schools think they will win on a consistent basis in the SEC. Every so often they will play for the league championship, but not often enough. Incidentally, the article by Austin Murphy in Sports Illustrated about the Missouri-Kansas rivalry was great. Before last week it was 55-55 and a couple of ties. They hate each other.
Hi BeanoI hate rematches. I think LSU would rather play someone else because they beat AL. Do you like rematches? Thanks
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I would prefer two teams from different conferences playing for the national title. If two teams from the same conference finish 1-2, I am fine with that being the championship game...they are the two best teams.
What do you think of conference championship games? Should the Big 12 bring back their championship game?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
I would like to see the Big 12 do that, definitely, but they have to have 12 teams. Overall I like championship games, I think they are good. Sometimes the best team in the country loses in that game.
Isn't Arizona State a pretty good job? I think it is.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Yes, I think it is. It is not USC or Alabama, but I think it is a good job. You can recruit there, you can win there, it has happened before.
Larry (Las Vegas)
Beano: Stanford has produced good teams before then disappeared from the national spotlight. Will this be the case again when Luck goes pro?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Number one, it is tough for Stanford to compete on a consistent basis because of the academics. Second, losing a player and leader like Luck is tough. We will have to see what happens.
Andy (Oklahoma City)
Who do you like more at QB, Landry Jones or Brandon Weeden?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
I like them both. I think they are both outstanding quarterbacks.
Ted (at lunch)
So a 1-point loss to TCU, a team that is (was) the closest thing to a rival that Boise has had in 10 years, and Kellen Moore is no longer even considered a Heisman candidate? He has even been eliminated from the O'Brien award. So much for being the winningest college QB.
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
You have a legitimate complaint on your observation. Boise State must be kicking itself as this was the year to have a legit shot at the national title. They will be talking about that missed kick for years.
Beano, in your opinion, what is the worst problem with college football?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
The involvement of boosters. Once the colleges went to boosters for money, it was only a matter of time before they had a lot to say.
Beano, I know whats wrong with notre dame.. It is simple, they need to lower the academic standards. Period. Thatd been the problem.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Academics have nothing to do with Notre Dame's problems with winning football games. I am sick and tired of hearing that used as an excuse.
Who do you think the new Ole Miss coach will be?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Kirby Smart is one possibility. My choice would be Stonewall Jackson.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Time for the picks. Ivan Maisel, at 10-3, picked Oregon over UCLA, 49-14. I am 5-8 and glad the season is almost over. Oklahoma State 44, Oklahoma 34. Have a great weekend.
