Chris Mortensen (11:01 AM)
Good morning. Belated Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy New Year! Got about 25 minutes to chat so let's roll.
Kurtis (Houston, TX) [via mobile]
Hey Mort, I know ive heard u mention the Texans as one of ur post season favorites, but with 2 losses in a row, have your thoughts changed ur opinion on them? Also do u think when Andre gets back, assuming he is healthy, their offense can be better than almost everyone in AFC, excluding the Pats and maybe the Steelers?
Chris Mortensen (11:02 AM)
Yeah, at mid-season I really believed the Texans could emerge as the team to beat in the AFC but obviously the Matt Schaub injury was huge blow. It really would have been interesting if Schaub and Mario Williams had remained healthy, along with Andre Johnson. They still will be dangerous but there are limitations with a rookie QB. I'll be paying attention, though.
If the Rams get the 1st overall pick what would Sam Bradfords trade value be,would trading him cause a cap hit or cap relief, and would his contract be to big for any team to take on?
Chris Mortensen (11:06 AM)
Bradford was the NFL offensive rookie of the year in 2010 - this year was a disaster for a lot of reasons. His arm is stronger than Andrew Luck's and he is more accurate. I will say that Luck will be a star - he's body type will make him extremely durable, he's a very good athlete and smart. Luck will bring more of a bounty because Bradford is playing under the last huge rookie contract. I also believe that when things settle down with the Rams, Bradford will prove to be a Pro Bowl-caliber QB so I would trade the rights to Luck and build around Bradford. Now, would the Browns give up a significant compensation for Bradofrd because of Pat Shurmur's success? Maybe. It will be quite a discussion of the Rams have the first pick.
Do you think the Lions deserved more than one pro bowl player? If so who do you think should have made it?
Chris Mortensen (11:08 AM)
I'm sure the Lions had a fair amount of high alternates.I have no problem with Eli Manning ahead of Matthew Stafford. The NFC QB list was deep - in fact, Cam Newton is the first alternate and I have no problem with that. DE Cliff Avril comes to mind. I think if Chris Houston had stayed healthy at corner, he is an emerging Pro Bowl player. Otherwise, no big deal.
Do the Raiders hire a true G. M. next year?
Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
Word is they will begin their official search for a true GM right after the first of year.
Matt P (Berkshire, NY)
Do you think Adrian Peterson will be the starting running back for the Vikings week one 2012?
Chris Mortensen (11:11 AM)
I don't and I'd be careful if I were the Vikings. Toby Gerhart actually started to show some real skills in the offense. I assume they are going to add another quality receiver. Build the O-line and QB in good hands with Ponder and Webb. Adrian is so valuable and the investment is big that you don't rush him no matter how hard he works - which he will and how good he thinks he feels when the season opens.
If Peyton is healthy and the colts land the first overral pick, should the colts draft the best available in Luck?
Chris Mortensen (11:14 AM)
If the Colts have the No. 1 pick AND Peyton is healthy, I believe they will still draft Andrew Luck. Here's the problem - I don't think by March 8 that they will have clarity on Peyton's health and given his multiple neck surgeries it would seem logical that they draft Luck. I do not believe Peyton will be on the Colts but that is a real unknown with his health.
Tom Coughlin (The Film Room)
If we lose Sunday, am I out of a job?
Chris Mortensen (11:16 AM)
I would be shocked. You, Coughlin, have not lost the players, you have had an extraordinary amount of injuries on both sides of the ball and there is nobody out there that will do a better job. And you, coach Coughlin, are the youngest 65-year-old I know.
What do you think the Bengals priority will be in the draft? I feel like their offense is an elite RB(i have a Benson jersey but he isnt great if he doesnt run the ball 30 times anymore)away from being a problem in the nfl with Green and Dalton having success early. Gresham has huge potential as well as Simpson. Maybe an O lineman?
Chris Mortensen (11:18 AM)
I think you continue to address the trenches and the defensive front 7. You can find running backs and I would imagine that will be on the list. Promising days ahead - the Bengals should make sure they don't lose Jay Gruden as OC and do their best to keep Mike Zimmer as OC, though Zimmer's time to be a head coach has come, in my opinion.
Should anyone believe Rex Ryan when he says he'd rather have Sanchez than Manning?
Chris Mortensen (11:19 AM)
First of all, Rex never should answer that question as long as Sanchez is on the roster and your team is in the playoff hunt. It's also a violation of league rules to talk about Manning. If Peyton were healthy and a free agent, do I think the Jets would go after him? Yes, I do, along with a few other teams.
do you think romeo will be kc coach next yr and will they resign orton
Chris Mortensen (11:20 AM)
I do believe Romeo Crennel will be the coach but Orton is a bigger question. He's a free agent. If he plays well in Denver - and wins - I think GM Scott Pioli should really consider it even though Pioli has been a Matt Cassel man.
Bruce (Charlotte, NC)
I keep hearing from a buddy of mine that Bill Cowher is holding out for when the Giants HC job opens up. Is there any truth to that?
Chris Mortensen (11:24 AM)
I think everybody has heard that same thing. Here's the problem - the Giants job probably won't open up and I don't know that Cowher would be an upgrade. He's also sat out of football for four years and to re-ignite the grinding flames would be a challenge. On the other hand, Cowher certainly would want to work for an ownership like John Mara and Steve Tisch and the Giants have an established QB in place so I do believe that if Cowher ever got the itch again, the Giants would be one of the few teams that would be appealing to him. Cowher also has stated he has no plans to coach. That's a tricky statement but maybe true.
What do you think will happen in buffalo this offseason? Will anyone get canned?
Chris Mortensen (11:26 AM)
I could see some staff adjustments, that's all, and then continue to build the roster.
Do you think Norv Turner and AJ Smith will be fired next week, or will they somehow survive another year on the Chargers payroll?
Chris Mortensen (11:30 AM)
Yes, I think both will be fired. I think Norv has done a better job than people think. The talent level isn't equal the hype. Regardless, I believe but Norv and AJ will be unemployed by next Tuesday.
Chris Mortensen (11:31 AM)
I have to run to a conference call for our ESPN2 show, NFL32, at 6 ET weekly. Check us out. Also send your questions on Twitter to @NFL32 or to me @mortreport. Sunday NFL Countdown at 10 a.m. God Bless!
