Chad Ford (1:01 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. A big day with the deadline for extensions for the Rookie Class of 2008 coming today at midnight. We'll also talk NBA Draft in the second half. Let's roll.
What do you think of the Wolves extension of Kevin Love? 4 years, $60 Million according to Stein.
Chad Ford (1:05 PM)
He's playing like a max player this year and I think he'll keep doing it. If we redid the 2008 NBA Draft -- Love would've been the second player taken behind Derrick Rose. Had Miami drafted him instead of Michael Beasley? Wow. Minnesota now has two young bedrocks in Love and Ricky Rubio to build around. Derrick Williams might be a third. The rest of the supporting cast needs a lot of work which is a bit sad considering all of the opportunities the Wolves have squandered the past few years.
What is Orlando management thinking? They now announce that they aren't going to offer Ryan Anderson an extension due to the D12 uncertainty. Wasn't there uncertainty when they gave Big Baby and JRich 4 year deals just weeks ago?
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
Anderson is having a breakout year and is one of the top candidates for Most Improved. But we don't know a couple of things. I don't think extensions make sense for teams unless they are getting a discount now. They own Anderson's restricted rights. They can match any offer this summer. Why pay him a boatload of money now? I only think extensions work for Max players (you lock up Derrick Rose 100 out of 100 times) and guys that are willing to take less now for the security of having an extension. Everyone else ... you let it play out over the summer.
Big Ern (DC)
Will the Wiz extend JaVale McGee? Do McGee, Young, or Blatche have ANY trade value?
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
I wouldn't. They'll still own his restricted rights this summer. Why overpay now? I can tell you that a lot of these guys are asking for a ton of money. McGee thinks he's a near max player. But he's not helping the Wizards win. The one complicating area for teams is that this summer, there will be a lot of teams with cap space. They do run the risk that a team will swoop in and offer McGee a ridiculous deal that they don't want to match. But given McGee's questionable attitude, I'd probably say good riddance.
What do you make of the Gallinari extension? Is he better than Melo right now?
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
The reports I've read on the proposed extension say 4 years, $42 million which seems a little high. Again, there's very little risk for a team in NOT doing an extension right now. But I think he does have the talent to live up to that deal.
Can the Pacers turn Roy Hibbert marquee player and centerpiece? What are the chances of an early contract extension?
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
He's really having a great season and his grittiness in that Laker game (playing with a broken nose and without a mask in the second half) said something to the Pacers. With that said, it sounds like the two sides aren't close ... though things can change quickly when you get to the deadline. The Pacers might be the one team that would be incentivized to sign Hibbert now. There are very few centers on the open market. If he plays like this all year, someone may go crazy and offer him a huge deal. That would be insanity for Hibbert, but you saw what Gasol and DeAndre Jordan got this summer. The Pacers would be able to match ... but given their budget ... would they?
Update on the Eric Gordon contract extension?
Chad Ford (1:16 PM)
Stern authorized an extension ... it's just unclear for how much. It's going to take a lot of money to lock up Gordon in New Orleans. But given his injury history, he does seem surprisingly motivated to get a deal done. This one's a bit tough to call without knowing the numbers.
Chris (Hauula, HI)
If you could re-do the NBA Draft of 2008, knowing what you know now ... what would the Top 10 look like?
Chad Ford (1:20 PM)
1. Derrick Rose. 2. Kevin Love. 3. Russell Westbrook 4. Eric Gordon 5. Brook Lopez 6. Roy Hibbert 7. Danilo Gallinari 8. DeAndre Jordan 9. Serge Ibaka 10. Nicolas Batum
Why isn't Carmelo Anthony for Deron Williams the best trade ever?
Chad Ford (1:22 PM)
You must be a Knicks fan. I'm not sure how happy I'd be with that as a Nets fan. But then again, if you're going to lose Williams for nothing this summer ...
Dave C (New York)
There are rumblings about a possible D12 to Knicks trade, seeing STAT going to the Magic in return. This just seems unlikely, but even still, what in the world would the Knicks do with 2 defensive-minded 7-footers in D'Antoni's system? I'm a Knicks fan, and the thought of D12 going to the Big Apple would have made me very happy BEFORE signing Chandler. This just doesn't seem like it would work - Thoughts?
Chad Ford (1:25 PM)
Two problems with any Amare trade. One, he's looked absolutely awful this year. Two, his contract is uninsured. If he has another knee problem .. the team is on the hook for his whole salary. Typically players contracts are insured, meaning insurance picks up 80 percent of salary if hurt. Amare's knees were bad enough that the Knicks couldn't get insurance on it. That's a BIG deal for most teams.
Perkins, Imbaka and Harden for Howard. Who says no?
Chad Ford (1:27 PM)
Apparently Howard. He's got a short list of teams he'd re-sign with and I don't think the Thunder are on it. I don't know where Howard ends up. But the Magic need to do something before the deadline. If they hold onto him, my money is on Howard ending up in Dallas next year.
Why isn't Ernie Grunfeld gone along with Flip?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
I really like Ernie. Always have. But Flip didn't put together that roster. He just had to try to coach it. I don't think Phil Jackson could've succeeded there. At some point, the GM has to take responsibility and I think that time is coming in Washington.
If Lopez comes back healthy and proves it.. wouldn't a package with Brook, MarShon, exponential draft picks, and giving up the Hedo contract be too much to pass up on?
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Might be. The emergence of MarShon Brooks is a major boon to the Nets. He's been one of the two or three best rookies in the league so far. He becomes a much more serious chip in any trade proposal. Brooks has the ability to be a 20 ppg scorer in the league.
What is the lakers most likely move(s) if/when they decide what they currently have is not enough to compete for a title this year?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
They're still trying to get Dwight Howard. That would obviously change everything. If they can't get that done, then Pau Gasol is the obvious trade bait. The Rockets want him badly and could give the Lakers multiple players back.
Will the Mavs move Marion just to clear space for D12 in free agenct next year?
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
They'll try. Cuban cares about this season obviously ... but he knows the whole future of the franchise hinges on the summer of 2012. If he can move Marion now ... he gets close to being able to bring in two max players like Deron Williams and Dwight Howard.
Marvin B (Ohio)
What would you do to fix the Knicks if you were their GM?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
Spend sometime watching how Sam Presti, Kevin O'Connor, John Paxson and Larry Bird and David Morway have rebuilt their teams. Short of landing a couple of Top 5 players (ie. LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Kobe, Chris Paul) you have to build a team. Neither Amare or Carmelo are good enough to carry the entire load. They are stars in name more than in deed. Had the Knicks been smart and not overvalued name recognition, they'd be in a much better place today.
Maniac Maciej (Chicago)
What will the public reaction be when Rubio's FG% inevitably falls south of 35%?
Chad Ford (1:43 PM)
Watching it closely. Jason Kidd shot under 40 percent from the field his first three seasons in the league and has had a total of 9 seasons where he didn't crack the 40 percent barrier. But he's such a special passer that he was still valuable. Rubio doesn't have to be a great shooter to be a very good NBA player because of his special ability to see the floor. But if he can be a credible shooter, he's a superstar.
If the Cavs get a top five lottery pick in the 2012 draft who should they try and get if Davis is off the board?
Chad Ford (1:44 PM)
Harrison Barnes would make a lot of sense for them. He's the sort of scoring wing that could really be valuable to them and he's a model citizen on and off the court. Maybe Andre Drummond to play the middle.
mark (cleveland )
If the NBA drafts on potential isn't Drummond the #1 pick over Davis? Is that race close at all or is Davis the clear #1?
Chad Ford (1:45 PM)
Davis is the clear number one. He has both potential AND production. For Drummond right now ... it's mostly potential with real concerns from scouts about his motor and desire.
Jazz need a PG to be a legit contender in the next couple of years. Anyone in the draft we can snag with GSW pick?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
Probably not. I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, but this is the weakest point guard crop we've had in many years. We don't have any PG ranked in the Top 15. Best one's available are Tony Wroten Jr., Damian Lillard, Kendall Marshall, Marquis Teague and Myck Kabongo. Wroten has serious potential, but is pretty wild. Marshall is an amazing passer, but struggles every where else. Lillard is a combo guard. Teague and Kabongo really need another year of college.
Nick Olson-Gay (Shawano, WI)
Who do you think is going to be the top 5 picks in the draft this year?
Chad Ford (1:49 PM)
1. Anthony Davis ... after that Harrison Barnes, Andre Drummond, Thomas Robinson and Perry Jones III ... though the order for those four is still very much up in the air.
Tommy Juanso (Lexington, KY)
Where do you rate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in the upcoming draft? Any insight into which team would risk taking him early?
Chad Ford (1:50 PM)
Top 10 player. Amazing motor. Great leader. Tough defender. Has a nose for the ball. Does all the little things that matters. Emerging shooter. I love him. If he can develop a go to offensive game, he could be really, really special.
Chad, I asked you a few weeks ago about Meyers Leonard and if he could potentially be a player that moves up in the top5-7 come draft time, sure enough now he is up to 11th on your big board. Think he can keep rising or barring people opting not to enter the draft is he a late lotto pick?
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
Size rises as we get closer to the draft and Leonard has the size and athletic ability NBA GMs are looking for in a center. He doesn't always play with the focus that you'd like, but the raw tools are there and he's producing this season for Illinois. 5-11 is not out of the question.
Tim (Kansas City)
With Tyshawn's recent stretch, do you think he's getting closer to the end of the 1st round...especially considering this year's PG crop?
Chad Ford (1:53 PM)
As long as a GM doesn't let his coach watch any tape from Tyshawn. The turnovers he makes every game are simply astounding. I think if teams drafted him as a combo guard off the bench that wasn't asked to run a team ... he's got a chance.
Who do you like as a Sleeper in the draft?
Chad Ford (1:55 PM)
REally like Damian Lillard of Weber State. Tony Mitchell at North Texas is having a great season.
How far has Terrance Jones' draft stock fallen since last year. When it comes to draft pick and money, would it have been better for him to come out last year instead of this year?
Chad Ford (1:57 PM)
I think it's about exactly where it was last year. Talented kid, major questions about his ability to take his game to the next level and his consistency. To me, he's exactly the same player he was in the second half of last season. Still a late lottery to mid first round pick. The disappointment, I think, is that so many of us thought that he might have a breakout year. Hasn't happened.
Ryan (Grand Rapids)
Is Detroit gets the second pick who should they draft? Assuming Davis is gone do they go big with Drummong or wing with Barnes?
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
I think they go Drummond. They desperately need more size.
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
Gotta run everyone. Thanks for coming. We'll do this again next week.
