BJ (Hattiesburg, Ms)
With fedora going to north carolina and southern miss hiring ellis johnson as the new head guy, what can we expect from southern miss in 2012 with recuits like anthony alford coming in?
Andrea Adelson (4:02 PM)
I still think this is going to be called a rebuilding year because of all the talent is leaving. I realize Alford is a great commit for USM but you never know about freshmen until they come in and start performing.
Bob (Bovill, Idaho)
Assuming the WAC collapses eventually, what kind of home would Idaho be able to find? Would the Mountain West take them in, or would they have to go elsewhere?
Andrea Adelson (4:06 PM)
Well let's think about the other options -- MWC, Sun Belt, C-USA and MAC would be remaining. Where would Idaho logically fit? To me it would be MWC, but I have no idea what the eventuality of this CUSA-MWC partnership is going to be, and how the non-AQ conferences are going to fit into college football 10 years down the road.
Herford Wu (Iquique- CHILE)
HI Andrea: I just wanna know if the MWC will still be the best NON-AQ conference with the additin of FS, Nevada and Hawaii. and what are the chances to become a BCS conference for 2 years.
Andrea Adelson (4:07 PM)
My guess is slim to none on becoming a BCS conferences for two years. Losing Boise State really hurt in that respect. I think MWC will still be the best given the losses C-USA took as well.
Logan (Scottsdale, AZ)
What are your thoughts on East Carolina; Recruiting class, coaching, etc?
Andrea Adelson (4:08 PM)
We are going to have some good recruiting information tomorrow on ECU so stay tuned for that. I will let our experts deal with that. ... I think it has to be disappointing for ECU fans to see the program miss a bowl game this past season but there has been a radical scheme change on offense and defense, and this team has been really young. There has to be some improvement shown in 2012 or Ruff could be on the hot seat.
Zach (Baltimore, MD)
I'm looking for Derek Carr to do big things here in his second full year at Fresno State. Do you think Tim Deruyter will allow him to air the ball out more than Pat Hill did despite Fresno having a dynamic back in Robbie Rouse
Andrea Adelson (4:11 PM)
Well, the good news is that offensive coordinator Dave Schramm comes from Utah, which has been known to have more of a wide-open offense. I certainly think there are ways you can use a good back like Robbie Rouse to your advantage when you have a great talent at QB in Derek Carr. Imagine the possibilities with play-action, and incorporating him more out of the backfield with screens and such.
Rumors are flying again that the Big 12 is looking at BYU and Louisville again. How much stock to do put in these rumors?
Andrea Adelson (4:11 PM)
Big 12 officials have said that they have not ruled out the possibility of expanding to 12 teams so I am not surprised to see those names floated out there. Louisville just missed out on the spot that went to WVU, and BYU was in the mix before that.
Quote from Todd McShay on Kellen Moore at Senior Bowl: "He's been outstanding. Anticipation is as good as I've ever seen. ... I've been really impressed w/ Kellen Moore."Your thoughts?
Andrea Adelson (4:13 PM)
Well I am not surprised! Anybody who has been on this chat and has read my articles know that I have felt all along that there is something about Kellen that you just can't teach. Yeah he might not have the ideal height and weight, but his football knowledge is off charts, and so is his ability to WIN.
Why does a team finish 7th in the BCS standings, but get eliminated b/c of non football issues? Seriously one team gets left out BECAUSE the didn't win their own league & another gets to play in the title while NOT winning their own division or league
Andrea Adelson (4:14 PM)
Welcome to the world of the AQs vs. the non-AQs my friend.
Another week another Nevada coach gone. We now have lost three coaches In January. How much does this effect the recruiting?
Andrea Adelson (4:15 PM)
Any time you lose assistants I am sure there are bound to be some kids who are upset. But Chris Ault is still there. It's much worse to lose your head coach. But you might want to pose this question to our recruiting experts next time they have a chat. I'm not up on every single team's recruiting class. My main focus is on the players on current college football rosters.
Adam Nettina (Ellicott City, MD)
To pick back up from our conversation earlier...do you think Army goes to a conference in the next 2-3 years? Scheduling, at least according to Chet Gladchuck, is going to be about impossible for Indy teams once all the conference dominos fall. Not to mention bowls, TV contracts...I just don't see how Army can pretend they will continue to be relavent as a nonaffiliated program given where they are and where the FBS is going...
Andrea Adelson (4:17 PM)
I think the Big East would be happy to have Army, and maybe this move by Navy will change its minds. I think Army might be a little hesitant about making the move because of the disaster that was C-USA. I think Navy is in a better position to compete immediately than Army at this point. But you are right, listening to Gladchuk it sounded as if scheduling has been really difficult because these super-sized conferences are going to 9 conference games and holding windows open for TV in October and November. So independents are having a hard time scheduling in those months.
Alan (Lancaster, CA)
Does it seem like conference realignment is just about finished for the next little while, or should we expect more to occur throughout the offseason? If so, which non-AQ programs are most likely to join new conferences?
Andrea Adelson (4:18 PM)
That all depends on what happens with the Big 12. I believe a decision is going to be made soon on whether to get to 12 teams. I still think the BE would take either or both of the service academies.
Rod (Tulsa )
Are they still talking about creating another division for the Non AQ's?I don"t care what you say when the non aq's get ranked in the top 10 with a cupcake conference schedule like they have it is a darn shame. Football is a game of attrition and Boise and non of the others have to deal with it at the level that they BIG boys do.Give them their own division and let Boise be national champions in that division every year like they should . You know once up on a time , FSU had the credibilty issue too BUT they would go anywhere and play away games everytime with the BIg boys until the became one and then teams wanted to schedule them on home and homes. Boise just uses this as an excuse for playing 9 cupcakes a year . They think one BCS team is enough? No way !
Andrea Adelson (4:21 PM)
Oh, Rod. I think you are late to the party on this one, as I have discussed this issue ad nauseum. The fact is that Boise just joined an AQ conference, and if you think that program would turn down an invite from the SEC or Big 12 you are flat out wrong. There is a division between the AQ teams and the non-AQ teams and there always has been, and there always will be. That is just a fact of life. Is it an eventuality that the two will split off? Many people seem to think so. But remember your "elite" teams feed of these "cupcakes," too. What happens when the 64 teams that are left in the top level of college football have to only play each other? I'm sure a team like Florida will be thrilled about having to play 3 or 4 nonconference games against AQ conferences, in addition to its "unbelievably impossible" SEC schedule.
Pants Patterson (Hitch 'Em Up, Texas)
TCU's first year in the Big 12...how will they fare?Lots of talent coming back on a young team...
Andrea Adelson (4:22 PM)
My initial thought is top half of the conference. Once I make the handoff to David Ubben, I will have a much longer, in-depth post looking at how I think TCU will fare the way I did with Utah last season.
Wayne S. World (Sparty On, Michigan)
Michigan State vs. Boise State. Will Boise State re-load or is it time for the Broncos to be put in their place by a (probably) ranked AQ conference school to start the season?
Andrea Adelson (4:24 PM)
Here is the problem with the non-AQs, folks. Boise has had an incredible amount of success, and has beaten several teams from AQ conferences -- including Georgia this year. But the second they lose to an AQ team they will be labeled a fraud and put in their place. I don't think a loss at Michigan State with a really young team is going to erase what Boise State has done the last 4 years. But I think a large portion of the country disagrees with me there.
Pete (Missoula, MT)
Hi Andrea, as a massive Ute fan I am loving seeing my Utes on National TV while living in Montana. However my question is more about FCS, Missoula is really into their Montana Griz. What do you think will happen to the FCS teams like the Griz when all of this conference shuffle stops? Will the FCS be even more irrelevant or do you see teams like UM or Montana State going to the MWC or other places? Thanks!
Andrea Adelson (4:25 PM)
I think those schools turned down overtures from the WAC if I'm not mistaken. I don't think anything happens to the FCS teams. They aren't really a part of all this.
Commander "Hot Rod" Cody (Lincoln, NE)
Now that Navy's tipped to the Big East, do you expect Air Force to follow soon?
Andrea Adelson (4:26 PM)
Air Force already said no, and I have to believe that they knew full well Navy had plans to join. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change of heart, but I don't anticipate one.
John (Glendale Heights, IL)
Based on the rumors...If in 2014 only a 7+ win season gets you qualified for a bowl game...Does this help or hurt the non-AQ conferences?
Andrea Adelson (4:30 PM)
I think it has to help. Western Kentucky would have gotten in this year if that was a rule, instead of a 6-7 UCLA team for example. But there is a caveat. It all depends on how many bowls remain. There is a thought that some might be eliminated.
In 2008, Boise State was unranked coming off a 10-3 season. They were starting a RS Freshman QB. They had the youngest team in FBS. Yet they ran the regular season table, including a win AT AUTZEN, and only lost their bowl game by 1 point. There is a good possibility that everyone writing off the Broncos in 2012 don't remember (or choose to ignore) that this program is past the rebuilding phase. Do I expect an undefeated season in 2012? No, but I don't think it will be 8-5 either!
Andrea Adelson (4:30 PM)
8-5 would be out of the realm of possibility.
Andrea Adelson (4:31 PM)
But I am not ready to declare anybody on the roster the next Kellen Moore, either.
Let's say that with Navy joining the Big East, Air Force reconsiders and also joins the Big East, and let's say that the Big XII-2-1+1-1 1 decides to expand and picks up Louisville and BYU. Would the Big East attempt to make a run at Army to replace Louisville? The Big East having all 3 service academies would be better than having all 4 railroads in Monopoly!
Andrea Adelson (4:32 PM)
Yes as I mentioned earlier, I think the Big East would love to have all the service academies on board. I understand why AFA and Army are hesitant, but they might be willing to reconsider. *might* Seemed to me that Navy was much more gung-ho about all this than the other two academies.
Any thoughts on the MAC's impressive turnaround in bowl performance (4-1)?
Andrea Adelson (4:33 PM)
I think it was great for the MAC, but not sure that it elevates the conference ahead of the MWC or C-USA.
A follow-up, Andrea: Nobody expects another Kellen Moore at Boise State. This program and Chris Petersen have always been about the team as a whole. The Broncos will play to everyone's strengths.
Andrea Adelson (4:34 PM)
Interesting you mention this. Boise State also is losing some talent at RB, so where is the strength on offense? I pose this as a legitimate question.
How do you feel David Piland will do for UH?
Andrea Adelson (4:37 PM)
I think getting some game action under his belt when Case was hurt is definitely going to help. It obviously hurts that he is going to be losing a guy like Patrick Edwards and some quality offensive linemen. So I would not be surprised if the running game was relied upon at the beginning to help ease things along.
Have you ever considered moving out West? Seattle is nice.
Andrea Adelson (4:37 PM)
Seattle is nice. But I am an East Coast kinda gal.
First it was Dinwiddie, then Zabransky, now its Kellen Moore , in EVERY siyuation BSU was written off as to having a losing season, yet Chris Petersen rose to the top in every situation. ANYONE who now thinks that BSU is going to have a dismal season , jasnt watched them in the last lets say ten years. They have four good QBs...who that guy will be no one knows yet, but bank this....Chris Petersen knows how to win , and who to do it with!
Andrea Adelson (4:38 PM)
I don't think anybody is saying Boise State is going to have a losing season. But I also am not expecting an undefeated season, either.
Andrea Adelson (4:39 PM)
For all those asking recruiting questions, I am afraid I cannot give you good answers here. We have our own recruiting department who handles rankings and such. So ask me again after Signing Day when I have a better idea of who is going where and how each class stacks up!
Michael (Houston, TX)
First of all I want to thank you and ESPN for putting the University of Louisiana's victory over SDSU as the second most exciting bowl game this year. Do you see any movement upward with the Sun Belt Schools?
Andrea Adelson (4:40 PM)
Well I think this season was an exciting one for the Sun Belt with the emergence of your team, plus Arkansas State, FIU and Western Kentucky. Should have had 4 teams in bowl games, which would have been a first. Adding Gus Malzahn to the Sun Belt only helps the profile. Does that mean I think a team from the Sun Belt will all of a sudden crash the BCS party? Not quite. But I do think the level of play was elevated this year, no doubt about it.
Undefeated....I think not....but i do certainly think that takiing the Mountain West is well within their sights. Whats your take on the playoff situation Andrea?
Andrea Adelson (4:42 PM)
Oh absolutely. I have been on record as saying Boise State is the favorite in the MWC. ... As for a playoff, I am all for it. Always have been, and always will be. Maybe we will get a little bit of fairness for once. *maybe* I still fear the system being rigged in a way to keep out teams that aren't from the desirable conferences.
Any idea how Patrick Edwards is practicing at the Senior Bowl?
Andrea Adelson (4:43 PM)
He is listed as having his stock down. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/notebook?page=seniorbowlbuzz0123
Garrett (Orlando, Fl)
Is WVU in the BE next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:43 PM)
My guess is no.
Fayleen (San Diego)
San Diego State has added some top players recently, can they challenge Boise next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:43 PM)
It's going to be tough without Lindley and Hillman.
Would you not consider Boise states returning wide receiver corps and a returning ex starter in DJ Harper enough fire power to help the new QB this season, not to mention our line returns a lot of experience
Andrea Adelson (4:45 PM)
I worry about Harper because of his injury history. There has to be some depth developed at that position. And I think WR will be a key position to watch, to see how well those guys do without Kellen.
Hayden Brush (Memphis, Tennessee)
Will Boise State be a contender in the Big East?
Andrea Adelson (4:46 PM)
Yes. To me, the upper echelon of the Big East will be (in no particular order) Boise State, Rutgers, Louisville and Cincinnati in the reconfigured league.
MAC vs Sun Belt vs WAC: Go!
Andrea Adelson (4:47 PM)
Your order there is correct.
Despite all of the SEC hype it is true that the MAC East had a better bowl record than the SEC West did!!!!!!
Andrea Adelson (4:47 PM)
Who would be your top choices to replace the schools leaving C-USA?
Andrea Adelson (4:48 PM)
Really all depends on what direction C-USA wants to go and what happens with this MWC alliance. I really do not have an answer for you guys right now.
Keith (Chandler, AZ)
Who is your top Non-AQ player to watch in 2012?
Andrea Adelson (4:51 PM)
Wow that is a toughie, Keith! I am going to go with Derek Carr. I think he has a chance to start letting everybody see his full potential with this offensive change.
Van (DeKalb IL)
Living in MAC county we have grown accustomed every year to head coaches of winning teams getting poached by losing AQ programs as they have significantly more cash. Based on potential for a good season, who do you think will get hired away after next year?
Andrea Adelson (4:54 PM)
To me, the top candidates have to be Dave Doeren or maybe even Terry Bowden!
Who do you see as having the best chance at being a BCS buster this upcoming season?
Andrea Adelson (4:56 PM)
I do not think any non-AQ team will make a BCS game this year. Too many teams have major question marks to fill. I haven't done my full analysis of who is coming back, but right off the top of my head I think Boise will be the only team ranked in the preseason and it won't be in the Top 15.
Do you know what all-star game Case Keenum is playing in?
Andrea Adelson (4:57 PM)
I haven't seen his name listed for any of the games now that I think about it.
Andrea Adelson (4:58 PM)
Just found this article on Keenum, who is training in Texas.http://www.foxsportshouston.com/01/25/12/Case-Keenum-preparing-for-the-draft/landing_uh.html?blockID=652970&feedID=3803
Who do you think has a better shot in the NFL...Keenum or Kellen Moore?
Andrea Adelson (5:00 PM)
Put me on the spot, why don't you? I am going to go with Moore.
Andrea Adelson (5:00 PM)
All right everybody, thanks for joining me today! Have a great evening.
