OK, thanks for joining. We are ready to get started. If you don;t get your question answered you can always hit me up via twitter @espnstrickland
Texas now has 27 commits right with Cottrell and their last target will be Dorial Green Beckham? Anyone else? Seems to me that Texas is picking steam in the last few days with recruits switching to UT.
Carter Strickland (3:01 PM)
I was surprised at the Cottrell switch but Texas needed rush end so it makes since. I really would be shocked if they got anyone else. I think DGB is headed elsewhere.
What are the top 3 player in Texas for the 2013 Class? What are the top targets next year?
Carter Strickland (3:03 PM)
For Texas they need to go after three guys: One would be a QB and I think Swoopes would be the one. Next is the big lineman Raulerson. Then either Jake Oliver, a wide receiver or George Baltimore a safety. Baltimore might be more important because Texas is thin at that spot. But Oliver is a good player and one that Texas doesn't want to lose to OU or TAMU.
raul (rio grande city)
Carter...wouldn't u say that even though DGB seems out of the equation for the Horns...that they have a pretty good haul of talent and its up to the coaches to develop and utilize them...Go Horn!!!
Carter Strickland (3:04 PM)
It is a good class for Texas. Now there is no way these guys are as productive as the 2011 class. Too much young talent on the field for Texas already. I think the vast majority of these players are going to redshirt.
I recently came across an article referring to Mack Brown not giving the #1 QB recruit in James Winston an offer to UT, can someone explain why this was over-looked?
Carter Strickland (3:05 PM)
Not sure that he was overlooked. But he lives 50 miles from the FSU campus. He was an FSU, Bama guy all the way. Texas had the guy they thought best fit their system in Brewer and let Winston go.
What teams would you predict for next year to finish TOP 3 in the BIG 12 after this years recruiting class and the way last season ended?
Carter Strickland (3:06 PM)
Well Landry Jones coming back changed things in the Big 12. I would have to give those guys the edge because in the end this is still a QB driven conference and he will be the best in the conference. It is wide open behind the Sooners. I think it is will be between KSU, Texas and WVU.
What is the biggest suprise a Texas fan should be looking for heading into the new season?
Carter Strickland (3:07 PM)
The development of Joe Bergeron. I really think he is going to take off as a runner and with a better offensive line could get the vast majority of the inside carries for Texas.
Craig (Corpus Christi)
You think Texas' staff is kicking itself now that they didn't offer Jameis Winston? Could be huge in the future if Connor Brewer doesn't pan out and he is productive at Florida State.
Carter Strickland (3:08 PM)
No way they would have gotten Winston. Too close to FSU. Bama wanted him too.
Do you think that Texas adds anyone to the class or that it stays the way it is? Also, who do you think will contribute as a freshman besides gray and malcom brown?
Carter Strickland (3:09 PM)
Don't think Texas will add anyone at this late date. As for contributors look at the two JC guys - Brandon Moore and Donald Hawkins - to be starters.Maybe one of the inside linebackers - Santos or De La Torre - could see some action. And Cayleb Jones has a shot at wide receiver.
Jose calderón (Spain)
Who are gonna be Longhorn's defensive ends the next year when Okafor and probably Jeffcoatt leave us? Who guys would be starters in 2013?
Carter Strickland (3:10 PM)
Ced reed and Reggie Wilson are the odds on favorites right now. I thought Chris Whaley might end up there but he keeps getting bigger and has shifted inside.
did the horns do enough on the defensive side of the ball with incoming freshmen, the juco transfers, along with the returning players to honestly and truly make a push this season? (assuming we have better qb play, of course)
Carter Strickland (3:11 PM)
No worries about the defense. Teh d line will be better and deeper than it was a year ago. Could be one of the best in the country. Hicks and Edmond are very good linebackers. The two corners are the best in the Big 12. Vaccaro is an NFL guy. They one weak spot is the other safety and depth at the defensive back positions.
Rich massey (Weatherford, TX)
Was it a good/bad idea for Longhorns to pass on Bo Wallace the juco QB who had just won the juco national championship? In other words is David Ash better than Wallace?
Carter Strickland (3:13 PM)
It wasn't a matter of Ash being better or not. The deal was that Texas made a commitment to the Brewer family that it would not bring another quarterback if McCoy decided to stay. Case decided to stay. Wallace went to Ole Miss. Texas will get to see how good he is in the nonconference next season.
I am expecting Texas to miss out on DGB and Mario (and have come to terms with that), but do you see any signing day defections among the Horns commits?
Carter Strickland (3:14 PM)
The last guys in Santos, Johnson and Cottrell are going to get a lot of heat from their original schools. And one could slip back but i really think Texas sold them down the stretch so they should stick. Everyone else has been committed for a long time and should not be looking elsewhere at this late date.
Now that the 2012 class is almost wrapped up, who do you see Texas prioritizing for 2013?
Carter Strickland (3:16 PM)
Scroll down for the answer. But there are a lot of guys coming in for junior day in a couple of weeks. The biggest names are Swoopes, Oliver, Baltimore, Manning. check out the story by William Wilkerson.http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/texas/post/_/id/1570/texas-targets-hitting-other-junior-days
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Even though you Cover Texas Football, Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVI?
Carter Strickland (3:16 PM)
Pats. But really could care less who wins
David Jackson (sugar land tx)
Horns have a great class for 2012, but what will the staff have to do to have another star studded class in 2013 with all the in state talent. Also when offered will Tyrone Swoopes commit to UT. I see him as a huge get in 2013.
Carter Strickland (3:17 PM)
There is a ton of in-state talent as always so 2013 should be another top five class for Texas. They really need to get a QB and Swoopes is the main target. He fits what Harsin wants to do. Also need some offensive linemen in the 2013 class.
What's you hearing about Texas chances of DGB committing to Texas. What's up with the report about DGB committing to Mizzouri.
Carter Strickland (3:18 PM)
I highly doubt he is going to Texas. I would say there is about a 1 percent chance.
My question goes toward all the people who are saying the aggies going to the sec will help their recruiting. I believe in the state of Texas it will negatively impact their recruiting because who wants to go to a school who is going 6-6 every season. With that being said I think UT has a stranglehold over Texas recruiting forver. What are your thoughts?
Carter Strickland (3:20 PM)
It is going to be very difficult for TAMU to get guys in the SEC area states to leave and come to college station. Georgia and La. produce a lot of talent. Florida does too. In Texas 1 in every 450 high school players goes DI. That is where TAMU needs to stay and recruit. They are not going to beat Florida LSU, UGa, Arkansas and Bama in the South for recruits. It is not going to happen.
Whats Texas's biggest need for the 2013 class?
Carter Strickland (3:21 PM)
Safety and offensive line. I know Texas has a lot of young guys on the line right now. But they need to get two players who can redshirt and contribute in 2014. As for safety the position just needs some depth. DBs in general are lacking in depth.
Greg (San Antonio)
Any chance Thomas Johnson gets his offer back and recommits now that DGB is out of the question?
Carter Strickland (3:22 PM)
I don;t think so. Usually when a kid severs ties and moves on he doesn't look back.
Do you think this group of players at Texas for basketball has the best shot of winning a title we've had when its all said and done ? And is Cameron Ridley going to sign ?
Carter Strickland (3:24 PM)
Seriously? No. Kabongo has a long way to go as a point guard. He has terrible court vision and makes bad decisions. He also turns the ball over way too much. Now he is a great defender and is very quick with the ball and creative on shots in the lane. But his passing skills are not good at all. Plus he cannot shoot.Ridley remains a mystery. His AAU coach is mucking up the process. But Texas is still counting on him to sign.
Bill (New York)
How would you handicap Texas' odds with the 2013 guys you mentioned - Swoopes, Raulerson, Oliver, Baltimore. What about with other top Texas guys like Ricky Seales-Jones?
Carter Strickland (3:26 PM)
I think Raulerson is going to commit soon. Oliver really likes Texas even though his dad went to TAMU and if the Longhorns prove they can throw the ball this year he will commit. Baltimore should be Texas' to lose as well.Swoopes needs to get ont he same page with Harsin. If Harsin can sell him that he knows how to use all his talents then I think he comes to Texas. But there are going to be a lot of teams telling Swoopes they know how to use his offensive talents and get him to the league. Texas needs to sell VY and what he was able to do for the Horns.
Should Santos stick to Texas? Diaz played a lot of 2 linebacker sets (understandably, given the passing tendencies of his opponents). Will he see playing time?
Carter Strickland (3:27 PM)
Good point. Most of those sets were dictated by the offense. But what you saw in those sets is that Robinson was still on the field for Texas. Santos can be like Robinson.
David Ash (Austin, TX)
If I become an average to above average QB next year, how many games do you see us winning?
Carter Strickland (3:29 PM)
Nine. That is if you can get the ball to the playmakers, throw it in the cheap seats when the rush is on, not throw interceptions and run when it is called for.
Rickey (Denison, Texas)
Can Texas extend their streak of top ten recruiting classes into 2013?
Carter Strickland (3:30 PM)
Yes. Tons of in-state guys out there and Texas will start locking them up soon. In the last five years 72 percent of Texas' commitments have come in the month of February.
Johnny Von Wahlde (Weatherford)
Do you see DGB really dominating the SEC at a Mizzou?
Carter Strickland (3:30 PM)
No more so than Julio Jones and A.J. Green did. That league is still going to be won with a solid ground game and very good defense. Missouri does not have very good defense.
Jimmy K (Toronto)
Carter, has Mack shifting some of recruiting strategy? I love the early verbals, but it's nice to hold spots for a few elite players and those who come on the scene late in the year.
Carter Strickland (3:32 PM)
Good observation. What he wants to do is grab the in-state guys he can get and then go national. Now with so many young players playing right now Mack can afford to swing at some big names nationally and not fear missing out. That's because he has such a young team. With a veteran team you have to be more judicious in who you recruit because you need replacements right away.
Haha i didn't mean this year, just with the freshman class we have now and the one coming in. Seems like we have talent but not too much talent to where they would leave early.
Carter Strickland (3:33 PM)
There are some guys who are going to have decisions to make. Byndom and Jeffcoat will be the main two.
With DGB reportedly very secretive about his feelings in this recruiting process, how can you and the other "insiders" reliably say that UT doesnt have a shot? What objective evidence is out there? Any direct quotes from DGB, family, coaches etc within the last month?
Carter Strickland (3:34 PM)
Nope. But coaches are starting to whisper to each other that it is over and he is headed to MU. Usually that is the way it goes. I really would be floored if he changed at the last minute and went to Texas. I think if Texas would have had a great in-home visit last week news would have leaked that DGB is considering Texas. That didn't happen.
Dillon N (Clarendon Texas)
Any chance of a national championship in the next couple years with the amount of talent texas is bringing in?
Carter Strickland (3:36 PM)
2013 Texas will be in a great spot to go for the title. OU will lose Jones and no long be the favorite int he conference. Texas should have the QB situation figured out. If Diaz is still around the defense will be very good.Only issue is going to be DBs. Need safeties and maybe a corner if Byndom leaves after 2012.
Carter Strickland (3:37 PM)
Thanks for all the time today. If anyone has any other questions hit me up at @espnstrickland. for recruiting questions hit up @espnwilkerson or @max_olson.
