Whats preventing ronnell Lewis from being a 1st round pick, because he was very production at oklahoma
Mel Kiper (1:03 PM)
He had a good career at OU coming out as a junior. He made more impact plays this year. What's helped him, when people saw him in the right game, you saw a guy who can be a 3-4 OLB. He's gained momentum the last couple of months. I think he's a solid second rounder. He fits the 3-4 teams.
If your the Saints, are you trading back, quantity speaking, to acquire extra picks after the jail cell they landed in yesterday?
Mel Kiper (1:05 PM)
The Saints are in a lot of trouble. They don't have a one this year and now a two. No second rounder next year. They're not picking until the third round. They're in a division with two up and coming teams in Carolina and Tampa. Atlanta's a good team. They've been fortunate that they've gotten some good players in the later rounds. It's a ton of distractions right now.
How far do you have Alshon Jeffrey falling?
Mel Kiper (1:06 PM)
I think he's probably in the mid to late second round mix. He's a big receiver. Separation is going to be a question mark. How big will he be? What's the best weight for him to play at a high level? How does he settle in physically? Will that translate to him getting open and getting separation?
Geraldo (el paso)
The Colts being at RG3 Pro day, raise any eyebrows that there not completely sold on Luck?
Mel Kiper (1:07 PM)
You have to do your due diligence. You have to look at all angles and evaluate all players. And there were other players at that pro day, like WR Kendall Wright. You're there to watch more than one player.
Mel-Always great work, does the Peyton Manning signing change how the Broncos will approach the draft?
Mel Kiper (1:08 PM)
No, I don't think it changes their approach. They still need defense. Manning can't be in a position where he has to outscore everybody. They need DL help, secondary. They need that defense better and up to speed. You maybe draft a QB in the late rounds, but that's too much of a luxury pick early.
Lovie Smith said that Kendall Wright's 40 time wasn't that big a deal around the league--people know that he's fast enough. Is that really the case, or did his pro day yesterday improve his draft stock?
Mel Kiper (1:10 PM)
You always want to eliminate any red flags. I had been told by a team that they already had a 4.4 time on him from the spring. This wasn't a big deal for them. He played like a 4.4 guy at Baylor. Running 40s there's a lot of technique. You don't run 40s with pads on. That's a measurable to guage and contrast players. The 40 times for Fitzgerald, Rice were not that good.
Mel Kiper (1:11 PM)
In Wright's case, all it did was erase some doubts that he already had. Now the question is will he drop down to Houston or with that 40 does he rise up a little bit?
Is mark barron in the same league as eric berry and earl thomas?
Mel Kiper (1:12 PM)
He's a different kind of player. He's a strong safety type, in the box type. He's the LaRon Landry type of guy. He's the glue that held the Alabama defense together. He's not an Ed Reed, he's a Landry. Barron is coming into the league with the hernia injury, but he should be fine and should be a mid first round pick.
Any longhorns going in the first two days?
Mel Kiper (1:13 PM)
Acho, the LB; Robinson, LB are borderline. Randall, DT might be a Day 3 guy.
What are your thoughts on the additions of Williams and Anderson for Buffalo? What player/position do you think they go with now at 10?
Mel Kiper (1:15 PM)
That's a DL that you forget about now in the draft. The position they need now is WR. Michael Floyd. You have to also hope the LT spot holds up. But Floyd would be a guy to look at. If they want to trade back, they could look at Kendall Wright in the mid-first. Another weapon at WR would help this team immensely. On defense, they need to look at OLB now.
What are the chances Tannehill is available at #14 and the Cowboys trade down with the Browns for Brady Quinn Trade Part 2?
Mel Kiper (1:16 PM)
That's a luxury pick. The next in line to Tony Romo is a luxury pick. The Cowboys are a team built for now. The defense was horrible last year. They've already added a record number of free agents so far. The best acquisition was Brandon Carr. That's what they needed. They added Dan Connor at ILB. The draft will have to get them more secondary help. I'm not convinced the two OGs that they added will help. They've been average players so far.
Kyle (St Louis)
What do you see the rams doing come draft day?
Mel Kiper (1:18 PM)
They have to wait and see who's there at 6. They'd like to get Justin Blackmon. If he's not there, they could look DT like Poe, they could reach a little for WR Floyd. Richardson at RB if they want a 1-2 RB punch. Claiborne at CB. OT Riley Reiff. They have a lot of options. They could trade down.
Buzzmaster (1:20 PM)
Hang on folks...TV just called and needs to grab Mel for a couple of minutes. He'll be back in a second.
Odds Tannehill goes either 4th to CLE or 8th to MIA?
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Miami, but I would be surprised to see him go to Cleveland at 4. They have to look at RB Richardson an WR Blackmon. Colt McCoy is the QB. If you take Tannehill and say he'll win the job -- he's like Gabbert last year. He's not ready. He has limited experience. He didn't play well against quality teams. You need a couple of years to transition to the league. Plus they don't have the supporting cast to give the QB a fighting chance anyway.
Do you like any WRs or OGs at 30 for the 49ers?
Mel Kiper (1:25 PM)
I think Stephen Hill is a guy you can consider. I think they were hoping the Wright didn't run a good 40 and then they could grab him, but that probably won't happen.
Is there any reason to believe the rumors that the Vikings are considering Claiborne over Kalil?
Mel Kiper (1:26 PM)
They do need a CB. They're desperate. You couldn't argue with it. But they'd still have a LT issue. Ponder is a guy you have to hope develops at QB. But that would be a move that makes sense.
Jamie (BFE, Kansas)
If Poe is gone at #11, or the Chiefs pass on him, who they going to take?
Mel Kiper (1:27 PM)
Luke Kuechly. Trent Richardson would make sense with Charles coming off an injury.
With Mohamed Sanu running a 4.41 at Rutgers pro day, is there any way he sneaks back into first round conversation?
Mel Kiper (1:28 PM)
He's a good football player. The speed was the big question. He won't be the vertical guy. He'll be the underneath guy. He'll set up in the dead spots and run the short to intermediate routes. He is the guy that does a lot of damage underneath. He catches a lot of balls. Whatever it takes to make the catch, he'll do. He provides a lot of versatility. He's a good, complementary WR. I think he's a second round pick.
Who are the 3 likeliest picks for the Jets at 16?
Mel Kiper (1:30 PM)
Depending upon what happens with the rest of free agency, you need a pass rusher. Courtney Upshaw, Melvin Ingram. You can't run Rex Ryan's defense without a pass rush. WR, RB, RT. They have some holes. They have to help out Mark Sanchez. The biggest issue right now is they need a guy who can finish plays. They don't have a closer off the edge.
Where do you see Bruce Irvin going?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
I think he could go as high as the second. I'm projecting the third. He has a lot of speed. He didn't play as well this year as two years ago. I thought he could be a first round pick if he played up to how he once did. He dropped from 14 sacks to 7. He could be a very good OLB.
What day of the draft will Missouri tight end Michael Egnew go?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
He's a pass catching TE. He has the size. He's a nice target. He's sure handed. He's got a chance to be a Day 3. Fifth round guy.
How high is Brandon Brooks going?
Mel Kiper (1:32 PM)
He could go as high as a second or third round. Powerhouse guard. Very athletic. Strong kid. Powerful kid. It was surprising that he wasn't invited to the combine. He's one of the top 5 pure guards in the draft. I say he goes in the third round.
can decastro play every position on the line?
Mel Kiper (1:34 PM)
He's an outstanding pure guard. He can play center. He'll have value. With the DT play in the NFL right now, he'll be huge to have. He's like a Steve Wisniewski. That's the kind of player DeCastro can be. He has that potential. He's the guy you pencil in as a starter and figure that he'll be a pro bowl player. I think he goes in the middle of the first. He shouldn't get past No. 20 to Tennessee.
With the signing of Martellus Bennett, do the Super Bowl champs still look at TE or address other needs?
Mel Kiper (1:36 PM)
They have other needs. They have an OT issue. That will be their No. 1 priority. They lost Mario Manningham. Bennett needs to be more consistent. He's not as sure handed as you'd like your TE to be. He has a lot of talent. I like the way he blocks. If they can get him to be a little more reliable, he presents a great target. Very long. Great kid.
Brandon (San Diego)
If the Bears want to go OL and DL with their first 2 picks, which one should they get in the first and which one in the second?
Mel Kiper (1:38 PM)
The first round, if you're looking OT, you're looking Mike Adams from OSU. Fletcher Cox from Mississippi State would be a possibility at DL. Second round OT, Bobby Massie, Jonthan Martin, James Brown. For second round DT, Jerel Worthy.
are the packers hoping to be able to take Konz in the first now that the center free agent market is weak? Do they still focus on pass rush? Thanks
Mel Kiper (1:39 PM)
There are some other guys they can go after. The free agent market hasn't closed. Jeff Saturday, we'll have to see what he does. Losing Wells is a big loss. He's a good player. Finding guys late in the draft that can get the job done, the Packers have done that. They could look at Konz. There is a chance that he could go a little earlier. They pick one pick ahead of Baltimore. But that doesn't mean they could move up a little bit. But they need a pass rushing OLB to complement Clay Matthews.
Mel Kiper (1:40 PM)
We'll be back to our normal schedule next Wedneday at 1 p.m. ET. We'll have a better idea on the information from the pro days. We'll have a better idea of how the first round might shake up.
