Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
Welcome to the BRSiRT gang. Here's out Turn 4 answers this week on the Hendrick slump, All-Star race changes, GWC finishes and Martinsville vs. Bristol: http://tinyurl.com/88kaz37
Sue B. (Seattle, WA)
I understand why drivers were so mad at Reutimann on Sunday. (This poor guy is becoming known as "the dude who can't keep Danica's car in the top 35"). But why aren't more mad at Clint Bowyer? He dive bombed into turn 1 and took out JJ and Gordon. I LOVED the Johnson/Gordon battle during the race!
Terry Blount (2:02 PM)
They shouldn't be mad at either of them. Reuti did all he could to keep the car in the top 35. That's his job. Clint had a way faster xcar with fresh tires than Jeff and JJ, so he got inside them. It was go time. That's racing.
frank (the Q) [via mobile]
Terry has it just been a series of bad luck or is there something wrong over in the #18 shop?..
Terry Blount (2:03 PM)
I'd say mostly bad luck because Denny is running well and Joey hasn't been bad either.
So what are the chances Martinsville puts in lights? That would be on hot ticket!
Terry Blount (2:04 PM)
Not a bad idea, but I don't think that's in their plans.
The quest for Hendrick's 200th win is getting ridiculous now. What track do you think they'll finally get it at, and which driver do you think will be the one to win it?
Terry Blount (2:05 PM)
Possibly JJ at Kansas since he won the last event there. Or maybe Jr at Dega. I expect Kasey to have a strong car next week at Texas. He is due for a break.
Frank (Kingston Pa)
Enjoyed your Turn 4 discussion. I wonder though what wouldhave been more excitng, bumper cars on the G-W-C or the 24 and 48 racing side by side for the win?
Terry Blount (2:07 PM)
That's a fair point Frank. In that race, it might have been more fun to see JJ and Jeff battle it out to the finish. But most of the time, the GWCs will generate way more excitement and drama.
Ryan (Tampa FL)
Would Mr H ever end his deal with SHR, if is stuff keeps beating his own?
Terry Blount (2:08 PM)
Rick is making a lot of money out of that arrangement and I don't see it ending, but it could change in some fashion if SHR keeps beating them like a one-eyed mule.
Hi Terry, long time fan of your NASCAR reporting. On Dale's confidence or lack thereof, do you think having Jeff and Jimmie-2 of NASCAR's all time greats-as teammates just is too much for Dale to overcome?
Terry Blount (2:09 PM)
Thank you. No, not at all. If anything, I think it helps Jr having those guys as teammates. And I'm certain it has helped being in the same shop with the 48 crew the last two seasons.
15 Fan (Boston)
Junior Wins!!!!April Fool
Terry Blount (2:10 PM)
Ha. Well not on 4-1, but he still could get it done in April.
As an avid AJ fan, I just about tore my living room apart cheering those last couple laps. At the time I was upset he didn't try to nudge the #39 out of the way, but after I calmed down I was content with the move. I think second was the best he was going to get, and a bumper may have jeopardized that. What's your take?
Terry Blount (2:11 PM)
AJ said he was way too tight at the end to make a serious run at Ryan. He praised Ryan for racing him clean at the end, so AJ did the same.
Danny McCoy (Las Vegas)
What's your assessment of Aric Almirola in the 43 after this first stretch of races? Got that first top-10 out of the way at Martinsville.
Terry Blount (2:13 PM)
I was impressed with Aric's performance at Martinsville. It really said a lot about his driving skills.
laura (manhattan beach)
Hi TB - JG posted on twitter today he would never go 3 wide into turn 1 at Martinsville. He seems to not be able to let this one go. Thoughts? PS - Turn 4 continues to be my favorite!
Terry Blount (2:14 PM)
Thanks Laura. We love the Turn 4 deal. Jeff is one of the guys I repect the most in racing, but in this case, he needs to move on. He and JJ didn't take tires and they couldn't get going on the restart. It was go-time at the end and stuff happens.
If the #10 car is still outside the top-35 when Danica's next race comes around, do you think they'll steal Dave Blaney's owners points again to be sure Danica makes the race?
Terry Blount (2:16 PM)
I think DP will have to make the field the old-fashioned way, and that won't be easy for the little lady driving on the big Lady in Black.
Hendrick and Dale are the ones who brought Danica to NASCAR so I don't see how they can be critical of Reuitmann for trying to keep Danica in the top 35?
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
Interesting point, but DP was coming to NASCAR with someone even if it wasn't Rick. I don't think they equate Reutimann's actions Sunday with her, but maybe they should.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Hi Terry, why were people like Brad K critical of Reuitmann trying to stay in the top 35? Doesn't he know that Danica is way more important to NASCAR than he is??
Terry Blount (2:20 PM)
Oh Chris. You got in your little shot at DP. The truth is any driver is going to try to stay in the top 35 at any cost. The way to solve it is to eliminate the top-35 rule, which I hate.
Is it weird that other than Bristol, at tracks Kenseth usually does well at, he's been off (Phoenix, AutoClub), but he's done pretty well at the tracks he's had less success at (Daytona, Martinsville)?
Terry Blount (2:20 PM)
Trust me on this one: He won't be off at Texas in two weeks.
If one track loses a race, what track is next in line to get a Cup race?
Terry Blount (2:22 PM)
No track really. Vegas wants a second date. Iowa wants a Cup date. NASCAR wants to race in Denver, NYC and Seattle, but plans to build tracks in those places are on hold.
Do you think NASCAR needs to prohibit RCR from entering cup trucks with cup drivers like they did with Harvick on Sat.?
Terry Blount (2:23 PM)
You guiys knows I'm all for Cup stars staying out of NW and Truck events, but I give Childress credit and racing true regulars in those series with his grandsons and Sadler.
Right now the top 2 drivers in the standings are still winless. Who do you see making the chase this year with 0 wins?
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
Most people would say Jr, but I think he's going to win soon. The way it stands now, it could be Truex.
If RCR needs to take Cup guys out than so does JGR and KBM. fair is fair. You can't wine about one set of drivers but cheer when Kyle runs in the minors.
Terry Blount (2:26 PM)
I never have cheered for KyBu in the minors. In fact, I was critical of running the NW car with his brother and critical on Monstar Energy leaving Carmichael to sponsor to Cup stars in NW.
I'm a huge Kyle fan and think that maybe Rowdy is laying low or maybe he forgot how to drive a race car. Are Rowdy and Dave having communication problems?
Terry Blount (2:27 PM)
No, but the whole NW team hassles may be getting to him.
Jordan (Lubbock, Texas)
Howdy Terry. What's next for Kasey Kahne? A meteor hitting his car? Seriously though, that dude has had fast cars and zero luck. Is it time to dust off the old panic button yet?
Terry Blount (2:28 PM)
The poor guy just keeps rolling snake eyes, but I expect the 5 to compete for the win in Texas.
Vernie (100% certified octo free) (NJ)
Would you call that shot Newman gave to Clint 'bump drafting"?
Terry Blount (2:28 PM)
I'd call it hard short-track racing.
Terry, you have always been opposed to cup drivers in the minor leagues and I wonder why you thought of Harvick being the only cup driver in the truck race and leading 248 of 250 laps?
Terry Blount (2:29 PM)
Hated it, but that's just me. However, I would have hated any driver leading 248 of 250 laps.
Can the Dinger capitalize on his career best finish, win a race and possibly make the Chase?
Terry Blount (2:30 PM)
That's a bit opf a stretch, but not impossible. As long as he stays in the top 20, he might make the Chase by winning one race and earning one of the top wildcard spots.
Vernie (100% certified octo free) (NJ)
Hasn't the 5/25 HMS team always been cursed so why does anyone expect different results now?
Terry Blount (2:32 PM)
I don't believe in curses, and that team finished 2nd to JJ in the 2009 Chase.
How did Reuitman go from being "the franchise" to this?
Terry Blount (2:32 PM)
Things can change in a hurry in Cup. Ask Kurt Busch. But Reuti is getting a lot of unfair criticism this week.
Justin (Northern Virginia)
In your opinion, has the integrity of the sport been ruined since Danica Patrick doesn't have to worry about sponsorship when a proven winner like Trevor Bayne who won last year's Daytona 500 and the fall nationwide race at Texas? Can't say that it's the best out there if the best aren't running.
Terry Blount (2:34 PM)
Thats's nothing new in auto racing Justin. Drivers have gotten rides because of sponsorship for a long, long time. Sponsors want to know if a driver can help them sell their product. And the truth is DP can help a company do that a lot more than Trevor can.
Wasn't the wreck mainly the fault of Johnson not giving room for 2 cars below him?
Terry Blount (2:35 PM)
What was he supposed to do? As they say, it was just one of those racing deals.
Cory (Geneva, IL)
Long way to go yet, but Edwards, Busch, Gordon and Kahne are all out of the chase as of now. Who do you think manages to get back in?
Terry Blount (2:37 PM)
Maybe all of them except Kasey, but I have my doubts on KyBu.
So you are saying Trevor should pose half naked to make a "brand" and maybe he will get sponors too?
Terry Blount (2:37 PM)
Whatever it takes Jake.
The constant whining by JJ is really getting annoying. That and the lying by Chad saying they don't bend the rules.
Terry Blount (2:38 PM)
JJ is a 5-time champ. He can whine all he wants. And everybody bends the rules as far as they think they can bend them without getting caught.
Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)
Big plans for your weekend off?
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
My big plans out to sit on my deck, have a cocktail overlooking Puget Sound and watch The Masters.
Ron (Mt. Eaton)
Do you think Kyle and Dave are primed for a season like #14 had last year where Rowdy does all his winning in the last 10 races?
Terry Blount (2:41 PM)
No. I don't think anybody will do that again in the last 10 races.
Gordon used timing lines or lack there of to speed down pit road at Martinsville kinda like Rowdy Brad did at Bristol? Why are people not angry at Gordon and calling for a change there too?
Terry Blount (2:43 PM)
I don't know if Jeff ever actually exceeded the speed limit in darting out of his pit box. But you know the change they need? Speedometers in the cars.
Who's the next Nationwide regular (besides Danica) to make the jump into full-time Sprint Cup?
Terry Blount (2:43 PM)
Probably Ricky Stenhouse. Maybe Elliott Sadler gets back to Cup full time if he keeps running like he's running now.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Terry, correction on the earlier question. Carl is 11th in points and would be in today.
Terry Blount (2:45 PM)
That is correct because Brad is the only person outside the top 10 who has a win right now. But it won't stay that way, and Carl won't stay winless.
Is this 50 race losing streak the longest in Jimmie's career?
Terry Blount (2:46 PM)
Jimmie doesn't have a 50-race losing streak. He won last October in Kansas City.
Hi Terry. I like your off-week plans. Mine are similar. Do you think Matt Kenseth can win a 2nd Championship?
Terry Blount (2:47 PM)
I definitely think he can contend for it for several years to come. But I wouldn't pick him to do it this year this year.
How come all the drivers talk about the importance of winning and winning being all that matters but then people act like Dale's 135 race losing streak isn't important?
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
I think people need to get off Dale's back. The man is second in the standings right now, only six points behind Biffle.
Now that Timmy Hill has dropped back to NW, Josh Wise is cup ROTY. Can ROTY be any more of a joke?
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
It's been pretty meaningless recently, no doubt about it.
I've pretty much written off Burton as a serious cup driver. How much longer do you think Childress let's him run the #31?
Terry Blount (2:51 PM)
He has a three-year contract. The sponsor likes him. He isn't going anywhere.
Scott (Kansas City)
Thoughts on Paul Menard's season thus far and do you think he can linger around all season for a run at one of teh final Chase births?
Terry Blount (2:52 PM)
Paul is running OK, but he will need to win once, and probably twice, to make the Chase because I don't think they will end up in the top 10 in the standings.
Do you think Ryan Newman can win another race or two. He seems to be running quite well right now. Also, tired of the ones complaining how hard he races, that's what he's supposed to do.
Terry Blount (2:54 PM)
He could win again. But let's face it, Sunday's win was a big of a fluke. The good news is if he wins one more he probably is in the Chase, at least as a wildcard.
I like GWC. If not then we watch the last two laps under caution. It would have just ruined a good race.
Terry Blount (2:55 PM)
You're preaching to the choir on that one Ron. I don't want to invest four hours of my time to see a race end under caution. Is the GWC a gimmick? Yes. Does it mean the best guy might lose? Yes. But I don't care. Give me the exciting finish.
KB Nation (Global)
I can't help but wonder how people would have reacted if it was Rowdy who dive bombed 24/48 instead of Clint. Your thoughts?
Terry Blount (2:56 PM)
I'm sure the KyBu haters would have howled to high heaven. But plenty of people are howling at Clint, too.
When #39 won did people and the media immediately say, "Yea but"?
Terry Blount (2:57 PM)
No. That's racing. Sometimes the best car doesn't win. Ryan managed to be in the right place at the right time. More power to him.
I didn't like it when Stewart mocked Jeff Gordon for being from both California and Indiana. Did Jeff tell Stewart to watch his mouth?
Terry Blount (2:58 PM)
I think Jeff has a lot bigger things to worry about at the moment.
So the #10 screwed up the race because of the dumb top 35 rule. And Newman wins the race because of the dumb Lucky Dog gimmick. Time to dump them both.
Terry Blount (2:59 PM)
I agree in th top 35. I'm neutral on the lucky dog.
I'm surprised nobody has said anything about the conspiracy theory that the #10, which is the car that supplies points to the DP car owned by SHR, parked so that the SHR cars could have a better finish.
Terry Blount (3:00 PM)
Wow. Now that's a stretch. Can you tell me me who shot JFK?
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
I'm out gang. Great BRSiR today. Some well-thought question and provocative topics. Just the way I like it. Have a great Easter weekend everybody. Peace.
