Ashley Fox (2:01 PM)
Hello everybody. Sorry to have abandoned the Monday chat. Was busy working on a piece on Dontari Poe that will post tomorrow. Thanks for joining me today. Let's get started.
So I've got a question about the Wonderlick? Isn't it 50 multiple choice questions? So if you just guessed randomly you should get 12 or 13, right? So how does someone get a 4? Did he not answer all the questions? How is that possible? You'd have to try to get answers wrong to guess that poorly.
Ashley Fox (2:04 PM)
It is 50 multiple choice questions in 12 minutes. I've read where there might have been some issues with Morris Claiborne that would explain why he scored a 4. I think it is dirty pool that someone put his score out there. The scores are supposed to be confidential. He's going to get drafted early. It seems like someone wanted him to drop down, probably so they could get him.
does philly see Vick as the franchise QB or will they go after a guy in the draft in the 2nd round?
Ashley Fox (2:06 PM)
Yes, Jim in my home state, the Eagles see Vick as their franchise quarterback, hence the new contract before last season. But these are the Eagles. They love drafting and developing quarterbacks. So it would never surprise me to see them take a quarterback. They do have some more pressing needs, however.
If Coples were to drop to Dallas @ 14 would they pull the trigger or still look at one of M. Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick, Stephon Gilmore or David Decastro?
Ashley Fox (2:07 PM)
Tim, I think the Cowboys will take the best available defensive player at 14. In his latest mock draft, my colleague Mel Kiper has Quinton Coples going to Seattle at 12, and Dallas taking Alabama safety Mark Barron at 14. It makes sense. So would the Cowboys taking another corner.
Tina (North Olmsted)
Hi Ashley - we need more ladies on chat! How long unti my Browns win the Superbowl?
Ashley Fox (2:10 PM)
Hi Tina. I love Mike Holmgren, but man, I don't see them winning a Super Bowl any time soon. With all due respect to Colt McCoy, they need a top-tier quarterback, not the 85th player taken in the 2010 draft. It all starts with the player under center.
Dave (Paducah, Ky)
Do you think the Broncos have enough pieces in place to win the AFC Championship
Ashley Fox (2:13 PM)
Well, they moved into the discussion with that little acquisition they made a few weeks ago. Peyton Manning certainly helps, as long as he is healthy. But this was an 8-8 team in 2011. To say they are the frontrunners, even with Manning, would be incorrect. That team resides in New England.
Mark (Florham Park NJ)
Now that Timmy has said he doesn't see himself starting at QB anytime soon, should this put my mind at ease?
Ashley Fox (2:14 PM)
Um, sure, Mark in Florham Park. Believe that if it makes you feel better. Timmy, as you call him, is a team player, but Timmy wants to start. You're going to have to hold him off.
Joe Pa (somewhere in Penn)
you still hate the Giants?
Ashley Fox (2:15 PM)
I didn't realize I hated the Giants. I love all 32.
who do you think the chiefs will draft
Ashley Fox (2:18 PM)
I am going to fall back to Kiper on this one. He released his Mock 4.0 today (via Insider, check it out). And he has the Chiefs drafting Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly. Would be a smart choice. He would fill a need and he's a player who should be able to step in right away and play.
do you for see suspensions for Fairley and Leshoure?
Ashley Fox (2:21 PM)
Do you know who is commissioner of the NFL, Ben? Yes, I would suspect so. The Lions say they are looking into it. They can't be happy about two marijuana-related charges in less than a month.
Best defensive player in the NFL?
Ashley Fox (2:22 PM)
He's in Baltimore. Wears No. 55. Scary man.
Alex (Cleveland) [via mobile]
Hi Ashley, I love my brownies strong young defensive nucleus. However we obviously need help on offense. My first three Browns Picks are Trent Richardson, Michael Floyd, Brandon Weeden. How do you think that sounds? And do you think this could be a route the Browns will possibly go?
Ashley Fox (2:25 PM)
I think that sounds pretty good. It looks like Richardson will be the guy at No. 4. Kiper has your Brownies taking Georgia guard Cordy Glenn at 22 and then Weeden in the second round. They need help on offense, and Glenn would look good blocking for Richardson. Nice that they have two first-round picks. They need them.
Matthew (Columbia, NJ)
Ashley: Do you see the Eagles drafting a DT early in the draft?
Ashley Fox (2:27 PM)
Matthew, it wouldn't surprise me. I saw one mock that had them taking Dontari Poe at 15. Kiper has them taking Fletcher Cox from Mississippi State. If you've followed the team for more than a minute, you know how Andy Reid likes to take linemen, either offensive or defensive, in the first round. Build from the trenches out. He's certainly not going to take a linebacker in the first round.
With the draft being full of quality WR and CB isn't feasible for the Vikings to be a much better team from last year if they have a good draft?
Ashley Fox (2:31 PM)
Much better? This will be a rebuilding process for the Vikings. It is also feasible that they take offensive lineman Matt Kalil of USC at 3 to give Christian Ponder protection. They need many things, a left tackle among them.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Ashley, where would you predict DT Michael Brockers to be drafted? Late first round? Which teams do you feel may show the greatest interest in him?
Ashley Fox (2:33 PM)
Late first round looks about right. Kiper has him going to Denver. They could use a defensive tackle, having lost Broderick Bunkley to New Orleans.
Jonathan Vilma (Mexico City)
Hi Ash;First there were lingering issues with my knee, then a sudden plethora of rumors made me understand that I will get suspended....then my team goes ahead and sign Curtis Lofton....should I be worry, If so, how much money will I command from another team who's willing to sign me?
Ashley Fox (2:35 PM)
Mexico City, huh? Very funny. It has been interesting to watch New Orleans load up on defensive players. It certainly looks like they are bracing for the worst. I think they've signed 45 linebackers, Lofton among them. So yes, Jonathan, you should be a little worried.
Roger (San Francisco)
As an eagle fans would you say that RG3 reminds you of Randle Cunningham?
Ashley Fox (2:39 PM)
Who said I was an Eagles fan? I live in suburban Philadelphia. Not a native. Not a fan. Like all 32.
Ross (New York)
Denver a real contender or pretender to win Super Bowl?
Ashley Fox (2:40 PM)
In April? Before the draft? I don't know. They certainly should be in the mix, if Manning is straight and they get a few more weapons. If Manning is the Manning of old, then yes, they'll be in the discussion. But there are still a lot of "ifs" in play at the moment.
Is there a team that's more of a wildcard than Cleveland in this year's draft? Nobody agrees who they select at 4 or 22. The only pick people seem to agree upon is Weeden at #37. That makes the #37 pick seem the most unlikely of the bunch! Help!
Ashley Fox (2:41 PM)
Oh MIchael. It is a good problem to have. Three of the first 37 picks. Lots of needs. Lots of talent available. It will be all good.
Ryan (College Station)
What do you think the chances are that somebody trades up to #7 to draft Tannehill just ahead of Miami?
Ashley Fox (2:45 PM)
Like who? I don't see it. Miami needs a quarterback for the future. Matt Moore and/or David Garrard aren't the future, but they could give Tannehill a year to watch and learn.
Eamonn (Dublin, Ireland)
Hi Ashley. If they have a good draft, are the Rams good enough to compete in the NFC west after all their offseason additions?
Ashley Fox (2:49 PM)
For Eamonn and Ross in New York who asked if the Rams will win more than five games next year... I think they will be better. They had so many injuries last year that just debilitated them. I worry about the quarterback constantly having to learn a new system year after year after year. I think it's clear who the big boys are in the division and that they are pretty loaded. Will St. Louis be better? I think so. But big players in the division? Don't see that just yet.
Al (Wausau, WI)
Ashley, the Vikings will have a good 2012 draft if they ___________?
Ashley Fox (2:51 PM)
... land Bill Parcells. I'm kidding. Interesting that story popped out now, wasn't it. Minnesota needs help on both sides of the ball. They will have a good 2012 draft if they take the best offensive player available at No. 3 and fill in in the later rounds. There's a lot of work to do there.
James (North Carolina)
Is it safe to say that Steve Smith is no longer a #1 receiver?
Ashley Fox (2:54 PM)
The one that played in Philadelphia last season is not. The one who played for Carolina caught 79 passes for 1,394 yards and seven touchdowns. You didn't like him?
Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)
Can Sanchez hold off Tebow?
Ashley Fox (2:57 PM)
I found it interesting what Champ Bailey had to say yesterday, talking about the Tebow phenomenon, his fans, the movement, whatever you want to call it. Having had a front-row seat for Tebow in Denver, Bailey said that Tebow will challenge Sanchez. I don't disagree. It seems inevitable. If Sanchez struggles a little bit, and there's no reason to think he won't, it's going to be hard for Rex Ryan to keep Tebow on the sidelines. This is going to be one of the more fascinating story lines of 2012. I am pulling big time for the Jets on Hard Knocks.
Tim Tebow (NY)
Will John Elway keep his job if Payton Manning does not put the Denver Broncos in the Playoff's?
Ashley Fox (2:58 PM)
And a final question from the man of the hour ... yes, I think John Elway's job is safe, either way. He's John Elway.
Ashley Fox (2:59 PM)
Thanks for joining me today. We will do it again at my regularly-scheduled slot of 1 p.m. on Monday. Have a good rest of your week.
