Garry Paskwietz (4:59 PM)
Hello everyone, let's get started.
Any update on Shaw's petition, and what are SC's chances in landing Ty Isaac? Is he giving the Trojans a serious look?
Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
Josh said yesterday that the NCAA will review his case on Thursday. He may hear something that day or, if they have more questions, he may need to give more answers. Both Shaw and Lane Kiffin said they are very confident that his waiver will be approved. Isaac appears to be giving USC serious consideration, Michigan is also known to be in the mix in a big way.
Gary, great job as always. Who are the runningbacks SC will most likely land come next year??? Who could make an impact as a freshman???
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
There seem to be two serious contenders at the top of the list right now in Justin Davis from Stockton and Ty Isaac from Illinois. Both of them are elite backs who could have the ability to contribute as freshman. USC will definitely be looking to take two backs this year.
Beau (Los Angeles, CA)
Garry,In recruiting interviews done on other sites, Joe Mathis and Su'a Cravens have been quoted that they have heavy interest to leave California and that their respective parents want them to stay. What is the latest you've heard regarding the two of them?
Garry Paskwietz (5:03 PM)
All the rumblings we hear on Cravens is that he is strongly favoring USC. As far as Mathis, he is enjoying the recruiting process right now, as he should, but I also think USC will be right there in it at the end for him.
Chris (Newport Beach, CA)
Is Madden scheduled for surgery yet and how many ligaments do they need to repair in his knee?
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
Kiffin said after practice yesterday that no surgery date has been scheduled yet. The report on the injury from USC said "tore a ligament".
Jason (San Diego)
Good afternoon Garry. I looked at a lot of Max Browne's highlight film and noticed that not one snap was taken from under center. How do you feel this will translate to our pro style offense? Will this adjustment be easy?
Garry Paskwietz (5:05 PM)
You never know for sure how he will handle it until he does it but plenty of high school quarterbacks have made the transition once they got to college. John David Booty was entirely out of the shot shotgun in high school yet he won two Rose Bowls for USC. Cody Kessler is another one who wasn't under center before but has done fine with it now.
Who is SC top target at WR next year?
Garry Paskwietz (5:06 PM)
The only offers out right now are to out-of-state receivers and it's hard to judge the interest right now. The two local receivers who have garnered the most attention so far are Steven Mitchell from Alemany and Demorea Stringfellow from Rancho Verde.
Rob (Santa Clara)
Hi Gary,Who do you see as our toughest opponent this year:-Stanford-Oregon-neuter dumb-OtherAny match ups you don't particularly like? Also, who do you think will start the season at QB for nd? For ucla? Thanks!
Garry Paskwietz (5:08 PM)
I think you still have to put Oregon as the toughest opponent and there's always the chance SC could have to face them twice next year. I would add Washington to the list of tough match-ups, it's the 4th of 5 games on the road and the Huskies will be looking for revenge. I still think Reese ends up with the job at ND and at some point I see UCLA going with Hundley.
Hi Gary, theres rumors that Thomas Tyner might take a visit! What do u think are the chances of max garcia comin in?
Garry Paskwietz (5:10 PM)
Thomas Tyner is a guy the SC coaches showed a lot of interest in early on but most people think it would be a longshot to get him away from Oregon. Garcia is a tough call, I think he likes the opportunity available to him at USC but the distance is going to be a tough one. He's from Georgia and already turned down the home-state school once, I don't know if he is going to do it again.
Hey Gary keep up the good work....wanted to ask you your thoughts on SC's biggest area of concern other then depth issues?
Garry Paskwietz (5:12 PM)
I think you have to say the nose tackle spot. Replacing the two interior d-line starters is critical and so far it looks like George Uko is doing that at DT. At NT, however, Antwaun Woods has been taking reps with the first team in recent days ahead of J.R. Tavai so that position hasn't been settled yet. Cody Temple could be in the mix once fall rolls around.
How is DJ Morgan doing in spring ball? He started the opener last year and is #2 on the depth chart but we don't hear much about him.
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
D.J. has had a solid, if unspectacular, spring. That can be viewed two ways. You would like to have seen him break off a few more big plays since that is his bread and butter but you also have to like the fact that he has stayed away from the fumbling issues.
Shaun Cozart (Cypress, Ca)
With Josh Shaw being injured this spring and not playing in the past two spring scrimmages. Where do you see him fitting in with such an experienced secondary come summer? Also, what is the likeliness that the NCAA will grant him a hardship wavier?
Garry Paskwietz (5:15 PM)
I think it all depends on which spot he plays. Right now I would project him at corner, which is his preference and the spot he lined up at in winter workouts. Shaw can be a unique talent at corner with his size and that's one thing this deep corner group really doesn't have is a true big corner. As mentioned earlier, both Shaw and Kiffin feel very good about his chances on the waiver.
Hi Gary. I know Lane likes the flash and speed on offense, but now with Tre out, where are we going to get some short-distance beef in the running game? Allen still seems too unkown.
Garry Paskwietz (5:16 PM)
Yes, Buck Allen is an unknown but he could really help himself with a good performance on Saturday. Buck doesn't have the size that Madden brought to the table but he's still bigger than either McNeal or Morgan. Soma Vainuku could end up being a short-yardage option as well.
Matthew (Newport Beach)
There has been talk/hope about Ty Isaac unofficially visiting again this spring/summer with his mom. At this time, are we in line to also get an official visit from him and/or has he announced his planned officials at this time?
Garry Paskwietz (5:18 PM)
We've heard the rumor as well but nothing confirmed at this point, it would obviously be huge if that trip happens. I would take that as a very good sign for the Trojans if Ty took a trip last month to USC and then got home and told his mom "we need to go back out there and you need to come with me." I still see Michigan as a primary competitor on this one.
MJ (Davis, CA)
Based on the performance, who do you see as the third WR in Fall?
Garry Paskwietz (5:19 PM)
If George Farmer is healthy I still see him being the guy. At some point, however, he has to get healthy.
That Vanderdoes kid is 285 and runs a 4.88, he is listed as a DE, but if he moves inside he could be a beast. I want him to be a Trojan. It appears that he may not get an offer since we have a commitment from Bigelow. Then again, not many CA athletes are getting offers yet. Do you think he will ever get an offer?
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
I think it's very possible that he could end up with an offer. He's right there on that bubble of getting an offer and you never know what might push him over the edge. He's one of the few top west coast linemen who seem to have defensive tackle capability.
Who are some recruits that will enroll early?
Garry Paskwietz (5:22 PM)
QB Max Browne and CB Chris Hawkins have both indicated they plan to enroll early. Su'a Cravens wants to as well.
Michael (Alhambra, CA)
Does the lack of protection from the offensive line concern you? There were sacks and bad plays do you missed blocks in the last spring practice.
Garry Paskwietz (5:23 PM)
Not really because I'm not going to judge the offense too much this spring in the scrimmages. There are just so many injuries to skill position players that the offense isn't able to function as a unit, not when coaches are literally having to place walk-on receivers in the proper spot right before the ball is snapped.
Any recruits who attend the practice?
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
Erik McKinney is keeping a running list of the recruits who attend spring practice and it's located on the Trojan Family message board on the site.
What are USC chances with out of state targets? Who are some?
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
Max Browne (WA) and Kenny Bigelow (DE) are a good start and I would put Priest Willis (AZ)and Ty Isaac (IL) as other big-time options.
What are USC chances with Hatari Byrd and Tahaan Goodman?
Garry Paskwietz (5:27 PM)
I would say they are better with Goodman right now than with Byrd, considering Goodman has an offer. USC stands a very good chance with Goodman, particularly with his friend and teammate Chris Hawkins already committed to USC.
Miguel (Los Angeles)
Max Garcia coming to SC or not ? Any chance we get in on Tra Carson RB transfer from Oregon?
Garry Paskwietz (5:28 PM)
I'm going to say no on Garcia but that's just a guess. I think he likes SC but, in the end, I think he stays closer to home. I would be surprised if there is interest in Carson.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Daggumit Gary, if Kiffin would've just left Madden at LB like I told him, Tre would never have blown out his knee without being touched. And the defense would still have one of their most talented and intimidating defenders still available for a 2013 championship run. How many times have you heard this the past week? And how do you respond to such fan insanity? :)
Garry Paskwietz (5:30 PM)
It's such an unfortunate situation. The move was working well and Tre seemed really energized by it, his play was clearly the top development of the spring too.
Can you compare Buck Allen and Tre Madden in terms of their running styles? Thanks.
Garry Paskwietz (5:31 PM)
If you want to compare to recent backs, Madden was like Stafon Johnson whereas Allen reminds me a little of C.J. Gable. Madden has 15 pounds on Allen and ran with more of a power, straight-ahead style. Allen has more slash to his style.
George (San Antonio)
Garry - will GF emerge as the #3 WR, even after De'Von's play this Spring?
Garry Paskwietz (5:32 PM)
As mentioned earlier, if Farmer is healthy I just don't see the others moving ahead of him. But if he isn't, I think both Flournoy and Blackwell have shown enough to be considered for the role.
David (Long Beach, CA)
How's the running backs looking? Haven't heard much about Mcneal or Morgan. What about the DLine?
Garry Paskwietz (5:34 PM)
McNeal has been a real workhorse this spring. He's carried the load with a depleted RB group and has looked solid. Morgan has been solid and we'll find out a lot more about Allen this weekend in the scrimmage. On the d-line, I really like the DE's Kennard and Horton. I think they have a chance to be a special duo.
is Priest Willis high on USC
Garry Paskwietz (5:35 PM)
Yes. He has made several unofficial visits to the USC campus while he's been out in California this spring for various workouts and camps. I would call the Trojans the favorite for Willis at this point.
How big of a recruiting tool has the Mckay Center been on current recruits?
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
Huge. USC has made it a point whenever a recruit is on campus to show them an impressive video that has been put together to showcase what is waiting for them in the McKay Center. The kids are noticing too and they talk about how nice it will be.
Your thoughts on K.Graf at RT. Does it not make sense to have the more seasoned/experienced player on the blind side to protect Matt? And have the Giant gain some experience playing the right side even if the combo block with Martin will have to wait a year (open up the competition again next year if Graf returns)?
Garry Paskwietz (5:39 PM)
That's the logic I would have used in putting Graf at LT, he's the more experienced player at USC and he played LT in high school. At this point though the coaches seem pretty set on giving a longer look at Aundrey Walker there. I can understand the potential of the size factor that he brings but even Kiffin admits he's not there on a consistent basis yet. It will be very interesting to watch this one develop into the fall.
Lewis (Huntington Beach, CA)
I was surprised at Coach Kiffen's comments about Graf and Walker having trouble stopping the speed rush on the defensive ends. Does this show how really good Horton and Kennard have become or does it portend problems for the OL in protecting Barkley next year? (p.s. It appears that Oregon is going small this year at DE and has one that runs a 4.5 40.)
Garry Paskwietz (5:40 PM)
I think these two d-ends have a chance to be as good as anybody. Both of them are veteran guys who have physically matured and they have seen a lot of action. Not much is going to surprise them this year and I see both of them having huge years.
- What are some players u worry or are concerned about right now finishing Spring Ball ?
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
It would be good for George Farmer to finish spring by at least getting out on the field for the final practice or two. His hamstring has basically kept him out since the 2nd day of spring.
manuel (los angeles)
how does our secondary look with the new additions?
Garry Paskwietz (5:43 PM)
I think the secondary has been the deepest group of spring. There is talent and depth at both corner and safety.
Terry (Los Angeles)
Hey Gary, I noticed USC has some offers for out of state DT's, Montravius Adams, Justin Manning, Henry Poggi...Does USC have any reasonable chance to sign any of them? And have they offered Nkemdiche? Ive read yes some places and No in others.
Garry Paskwietz (5:45 PM)
Adams continues to say he will take a visit to USC and I wouldn't put anything past Ed Orgeron. USC did offer Nkemdiche.
Chris (Granada Hills)
I've asked this before and now that Madden is down ill ask again.... Will Jabari Ruffin get a look at TB? The kid has some potential here as a big back..... We seem loaded at LB with Burnett being moved there what are thoughts?
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
The coaches have been pretty adamant about saying they think Ruffin's future is at OLB. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him as the #2 SLB at some point next year, even with the move of Burnett.
Henry (Los Angeles)
GaryDo you think USC will use all 18 available schollies or will they carryover a few for the next year?
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
I think they will take all 18.
Scott (West Covina)
Any chance that someone else could be moved into the RB spot now that Tre is out? It seems like everyone played RB in highschool.
Garry Paskwietz (5:47 PM)
It sounds like Nelson Agholor is the one who could get a longer look than originally expected, which is fine with Nelson. He's already said his preference would be to start off at running back instead of receiver.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Do you think Jim Mora can turn the Bruins around?
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
I think he will do better than the recent coaches at the school, just don't know yet how much of a turnaround that will be.
Dan (Santa Clara)
Garry,After reading the tweets which occurred after the Browne commitment, it sounds like we're in very good position with Cravens, Hutchings, Davis, Redfield and Willis. Of course recruiting is a fluid process but of those recruits, which do you think is the most iffy for a future USC commitment?
Garry Paskwietz (5:50 PM)
If I had to predict a school right now, I would predict USC for all the names you listed. As you say, recruiting is fluid, but that would be my call as of now.
Does Breslin look like can play at this level? Is Heyward big enough to play NT?
Garry Paskwietz (5:51 PM)
Heyward has been out all spring with a shoulder, I'm guessing he will be fine in terms of size. He's not the biggest guy but he's not overly small. Breslin hasn't done much to stand out yet.
I do not understand all the injuries. Are these players not stretching enough? Plus, why even allow your best players to play pick-up basketball?
Garry Paskwietz (5:53 PM)
There could be a variety of reasons why certain injuries seem to happen all at once, we haven't heard any specific reason for this latest run. As far as pick-up basketball, Lane Kiffin made his feelings well known about the topic last spring after Woods got hurt.
What do you make of Demetrius Wright getting time with the 1st team? Is Jawanza Starling on the verge of being passed up?
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
That's been one of the best competitions of spring. I don't think Jawanza has done anything to lose the job, Demetrius has just been steadily playing well. Don't be at all surprised if this one continues into the fall.
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
That's all the time we have for today. Thanks everyone for coming, we will see you next week.
