Due to the Junior Seau news, Garry Paskwietz will be involved with ESPN Radio today, so Erik McKinney will be handling today's chat.Let's get started.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
My heart and prayers go out to the Trojan Family, friends, and loved ones of Junior Seau. He was a great one and will truly be missed.
Erik McKinney (5:02 PM)
It's a tough day for the Trojan Family with news of Seau's passing. Thoughts go out to the entire Seau family.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will be the Best Rookie from USC In the NFL in 2012?
Erik McKinney (5:04 PM)
Nick Perry has a chance to burst onto the scene in Green Bay with how desperately they need a pass rusher opposite Clay Matthews III, but I don't think it's going very far out on a limb to say Matt Kalil will have the best season (and career) of any of the 2012 USC rookies.
Sean (Las Vegas)
How much of USC's success on offense this season will be predicated upon the performance of the Left Tackle position?
Erik McKinney (5:06 PM)
I don't think the Trojans need another "Matt Kalil" performance from the left tackle spot this year. As long as the opposing defense end isn't getting a free rush at Matt Barkley on every snap, Lane Kiffin and Barkley will be able to work something out. That duo has shown they are too good at exploiting matchups and taking advantage of their strengths to let one position keep them from big things in 2012.
What teams will Justin Davis be selecting from besides SC? Is SC the favorite? Is he a early enrollee?
Erik McKinney (5:07 PM)
Davis also has interest from California, Washington, Stanford and Oklahoma. USC is considered the favorite at this time, and I don't believe Davis is scheduled to enroll early.
paul mccormick (las vegas)
Garry, pls list your #1 (remaining) targets for both offense & defense. thnx. Paul
Erik McKinney (5:09 PM)
Defense - Su'a CravensOffense - Justin Davis (or Ty Isaac)Can't lose a local player like Cravens, and after getting a commitment from quarterback Max Browne, tailback is arguably the most important position for the Trojans in this class.
Jason (San Diego)
Hey Garry. Its safe to say that the running game and the defensive line will be the two most unsettling areas of the trojans early this season. Between those two, which do you have more confidence in heading into the season? Whichever group your more nervous about, do you think it will eventually succeed this year?
Erik McKinney (5:11 PM)
Definitely agree that the running game and defensive line will be the two areas to watch. At this point, I'd have fewer concerns about the running game, simply because USC opponents will need to respect the passing game so much. Also, there are four returning linemen and a 1,000 yard back for the offense. Along the defensive line, there are positives in the senior defensive ends, but the young interior will need to step up early in the year.
John (New York)
Is Cravens being recruited as a safety or linebacker? What about Priest Willis?
Erik McKinney (5:13 PM)
Su'a Cravens is being recruited all over the field. He is primarily a safety, but said the possibility exists of him bulking up into a weakside linebacker. He also said the USC coaches have expressed interest in possibly getting him some time in the offensive backfield as well.Priest Willis is likely a cornerback at the next level.
Any news on jordan sherit getting an offer?
Erik McKinney (5:14 PM)
Sherit has not been offered to this point. Last weekend, he updated his top five list to include Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford and Miami. The USC coaches have been in contact with him, however, and an eventual offer isn't out of the question.
Evan (Long Beach, CA )
George Farmer was so highly touted out of high school and has so much potential to be a big play receiver for the trojans, do you see him breaking out this year as yet another big play threat for sc on offense?
Erik McKinney (5:16 PM)
It will be tough for anybody to break out this year, considering Robert Woods, Marqise Lee, Curtis McNeal and the tight end tandem will all need their touches. But I do think Farmer takes a big step forward (provided he can shake the injury bug).
Terry (Los Angeles)
Leonard Williams,,Do you see him more of an DE or DT or will the coaches move him around? Whose the next commit to verbal? Sad day for the Trojan Fam " We Love You Junior RIP"
Erik McKinney (5:17 PM)
I'd guess that Leonard Williams ends up as a DT and slides right in behind George Uko as the No. 2 there this year. Justin Davis is scheduled to announce on May 17, and the Trojans have a very good chance with him.
David (Arlington, Tx)
Any news regarding Priest Willis or Tahaan Goodman and where Usc stands with these two DBs. Any set commit dates for either.
Erik McKinney (5:19 PM)
I think USC is in a better spot for Goodman than Willis. No set dates for either at this point.
How many linebackers will USC sign?
Erik McKinney (5:20 PM)
I think 2 is a pretty safe number. It's obvious the USC coaches would love to land Michael Hutchings, and they are going pretty hard after a couple other high profile guys. But if it comes to a numbers crunch at the end, it wouldn't be a huge shock if this is a spot that gets one taken away from it.
Best recruit who does not have an offer?
Erik McKinney (5:21 PM)
Defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes (Auburn, Calif./Placer) has certainly impressed plenty of programs across the country. Apparently not enough there yet for the USC coaches to make an offer though.
First of all, my condolences to Mr Seau's family as well as all other Trojans. RIP 55. My question is in regards to our RB recruits for 2013. I've read that Ty Issac is planning an official trip to USC with his mom. Any idea when this is taking place since he is planning to be an EE? In your opinion how does this change/effect Justin Davis' plans?
Erik McKinney (5:23 PM)
If Isaac does visit with his mother, it will be as an unofficial visit later this spring. I have yet to hear of any solid plans for that trip, however. I don't believe Isaac's decision will affect Davis.
Have you noticed that Willis and Cravens don't typically mention USC when asked about the schools they are considering even though most analysts say USC is the favorite to land both? Why would they not mention USC?
Erik McKinney (5:26 PM)
Tough to say why recruits mention certain schools and don't mention others. Plenty of people around Cravens believe the Trojans will be right there when it comes time for him to commit. Willis might be a tougher pull, and he will take as much time as he needs throughout the process. He is receiving heavy interest from LSU and Alabama, and playing in those kids of defenses in that atmosphere is something that intrigues him.
Chris (Newport Beach, CA)
Do you think this year's recruiting class in the most important of the three year scholarship reduction? We're loaded coming back this year, so the 2012 class was important, but I think this year's is absolutely vital. Would you are Garry?
Erik McKinney (5:30 PM)
Tough to pick out one of the three sanction-reduced classes as being the most important. The USC coaches are going to have to hit an an awful lot of those 45 players over the three years.
Many articles mention that the interior of our DL is a concern. Any idea how many other DLs - beside Bigelow - USC will be taking? Who do you see as a high probability to commit?
Erik McKinney (5:32 PM)
With Bigelow and Kylie Fitts already committed, the Trojans are off to a great start with this class. I think at least two more additions to the line are likely. Joe Mathis (Upland) will continue to be a high priority target. Out of state recruits--likely starting with defensive tackle Montravius Adams--will be on the radar as well.
Michael Reed (Newport Beach)
Erik tough day for the Trojans today with Rob Preston dying this morning and now Junior. Question which recruit in 2012 class will have the largest impact in 2012?
Erik McKinney (5:35 PM)
I think you probably end up with one of the two Florida guys making the biggest impact. If Leonard Williams immediately takes over as the No. 2 DT, he'll log a healthy amount of minutes. On offense, it certainly seems like Kiffin is going to do what he can to get Nelson Agholor on the field and involved with the offense.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Will Matt Leinart make good on his third chance with the Raiders? He will llikely see the field at some point next season given Oakland had trouble protecting the quarterback last year and Palmer didn't exactly set the world on fire.
Erik McKinney (5:36 PM)
Certainly rooting for Leinart to get it done. Very interesting to see Leinart and Palmer reunited.
Who are some possible players USC is recruiting at offensive tackle?
Erik McKinney (5:38 PM)
Nico Falah (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) is the big name in state. He's the only California OT with an offer. Out of state, Ethan Pocic has been a priority, but could be tough to pull away from Ohio State. Derwin Gray received a recent offer and Christian Morris (Memphis/East) will likely be a name to watch.
Anthony (Los Angeles,Ca)
Any updates on Patrick Hall?
Erik McKinney (5:39 PM)
Nothing new on Hall.
Anthony (Los Angeles,Ca)
What player on usc roster that no one is really talking about could come out and surprise some people come this 2012 fall/season?
Erik McKinney (5:40 PM)
I'm not sure if fullback Soma Vainuku falls in the category of "no one is talking about," but he has a chance to make a huge impact this year, blocking, running and receiving. USC has so many offensive weapons, but Kiffin's offense always runs a bit better when there is a dynamic fullback in play.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Gary, it seems as if Khaliel Rodgers would jump all over an offer from SC and he seems to be an absolute beast! I understand that we have limited scholarships and that we don't have a huge need for an OG, but it seems silly not to get potentially the best OG in the class and a guy that loves SC. Thoughts?
Erik McKinney (5:42 PM)
The USC coaches are certainly aware of Rodgers, so it's not as if he is falling through the cracks. I think it's safe to say that if Kiffin and staff feel Rodgers is the best offensive guard in the class, he'll end up with an offer. The USC coaches are definitely going to hear from Bigelow and Sills about Rodgers.
chris (hermosa beach)
what chances do we have at landing the following big fish from OOS: Pocic, montravious adams, carl lawson, massington, t williams?
Erik McKinney (5:45 PM)
Not great with a lot of those guys. Pocic will be a very tough pull from the Midwest. Lawson is locked into Auburn. WR Eldridge Massington doesn't yet have a USC offer. I think Adams could be the guy to monitor, but his interest level will be better gauged on whether he unofficially or officially visits.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Will Kiffin and Orgeron be abe to lure Torrodney Prevot out of Texas? Or do you think Joe Mathis will be the only defensive end that signs with the Trojans?
Erik McKinney (5:47 PM)
I don't think the chances are great with Prevot. Kylie Fitts is already on board as a defensive end. I think a tandem of Fitts and Mathis--with the possibility of Bigelow staying outside--would be a solid haul.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
If you can only have one, who do you take, Isaacs or Davis? Which do you think is more likely to be a Trojan?
Erik McKinney (5:50 PM)
Can I take Ty Davis? Or Justin Isaac? On pure skill, I'd probably go with Isaac. But in terms of what they'd mean to the recruiting class and program, it'd be Davis. Locking up the top running back in the state would be a big deal for this class, and it's not as if the talent differential between the two is all that wide (if one exists at all). I think Davis is more likely to sign with USC.
Pietro (San Francisco)
Who do you think is the better quarterback, Cody Kessler or Max Wittek?
Erik McKinney (5:52 PM)
It was impossible to pick one of the two after their performances this spring. Both were so solid and excelled at what they do well. It's easy to look at Wittek and say he just fits that tall, big-armed USC prototypical quarterback mold. But Kessler has done nothing to make you say he couldn't be the guy as well. It's likely going to be a very tough decision whenever that call has to be made.
Ryan (28th Street)
Many people have mentioned that a lot of the west coast recruits are trying to form a group that all end up choosing the same school, just like the "cal gang" of last year. Is there any truth to this? If so, who do you think is most likely to be part of that crew?
Erik McKinney (5:56 PM)
That idea has been brought up by several players, but I wouldn't put much stock in it playing out exactly as it initially looked. In the end, recruits are going to choose the school that best fits them. That being said, guys like Chris Hawkins, Michael Hutchings, Max Browne, Justin Davis, Su'a Cravens, Max Redfield and Tahaan Goodman have all been linked to that group. But if some or all do wind up signing with USC--or any other school--it will be their own decision. Those players are all too good and confident in their ability to simply follow somebody else to the next level.
Do you got C Hobbi starting for the Trojans in 2013?
Erik McKinney (5:57 PM)
If Abe Markowitz is able to return for a sixth year, he could make that an interesting battle. But I'll go with Hobbi there, as Markowitz will be able to spend time at all three interior line spots.
Erik McKinney (6:00 PM)
Thanks to everybody for the questions today. Again, thoughts go out to the Seau family after today's events.
