Chat with Ted Miller
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, ESPN.com's Pac-12 blogger Ted Miller will stop by to talk some college football.
Miller has been covering college football since 1997, starting with Auburn and then heading West to Washington and the (then) Pac-10. His columns for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer won first place in 2007 APSE Best Writing contest. The Atlanta native and University of Richmond graduate presently lives with his wife in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Send your questions now and join Miller Thursday at 3 p.m. ET!
Ted Miller (3:00 PM)
Greetings. Next week, we have games, which will be cool. Fire away.
Al (Los Angeles)
Is Hundley a game changer for Bruins at QB?
Ted Miller (3:02 PM)
Maybe.. difficult to say before his first college snap. But he's a charismatic guy with leadership skills and he can run and pass well. I really like his pairing with OC Noel Mazzone, who did wonders with Brock Osweiler at Arizona State. I will say Bruins fans are justified in being excited about their QB for the first time in a while.
Tommy Zech (bainbridge island (seattle))
what do you think of the washington linebackers core with all the injuries and switching players around. especially since john timu and princeton fuiamaono seem to be maturing
Ted Miller (3:05 PM)
The Huskies were awful at LB last year. Guys looked like they were on skates, and that was when they were in the right position. There is no way they are any worse in 2012. But we won't really have any idea until the season starts... I also will be curious how varied the looks are -- how often are there 4 LBs out there vs. 3. I think Wilcox will solve some problems on the Huskies D. But it seems to me success this year hangs on improved LB play. That gets a decided "We shall see."
Best secondary in the Pac-12?
Ted Miller (3:06 PM)
first impulse is USC, even with mediocre numbers a year ago... two legit stars in S T.J. McDonald and CB Nickell Robey. And lots of depth... Ducks also should be very good in secondary. Maybe better. Question might be who gets a better pass rush. That always makes a secondary look good.
Jeffy Mac (Napa)
Do you see ASU winning 10+ games? Because I do.
Ted Miller (3:07 PM)
No, but I like your optimism. Of course, every fan has a plan for their team to get to 10 wins this season. Oregon fans envision 17.
Johnathan Franklin (Westwood, CA)
Am I going to do a better job holding on to the ball this year? Will I have more TDs than fumbles?
Ted Miller (3:09 PM)
You've always had more TDs than fumbles. The fumbles just stand out more when your team is losing. You are one of the most underrated player in the conference, in large part because of the fumbles. Clean that up and you'll get your props.
Marcus Mariota (Eugene )
I'll be taking the field on that first drive sept 1st, you heard it from me first
Ted Miller (3:10 PM)
Breaking news. Thanks. Seems like a lot of fans see it that way too. We'll see Friday. Supposedly.
Trey (Long Beach)
Who do you see being the #3 WR at USC now? With Farmer healthy and Agholor looking impressive, the competition is getting interesting, no?
Ted Miller (3:11 PM)
If Farmer is healthy, I don't see how he doesn't win the job because he is a dynamic talent. The good news is it seems the Trojans can go at least 5 deep at WR, which bodes well for Barkley.
Judge Holden (Nacogdoches, TX)
How about Treggs being named a started at Cal? Would seem to be a group with complementing skill sets when you look at him, KA21, Harper and Harris.
Ted Miller (3:13 PM)
Tedford basically said during the spring that he figured at least 2 of the freshmen and probably 3 would play, and he strongly intimated to me that he thought it a good possibility that his No. 2 behind Allen would be a frosh. Thing with freshmen: You must wait until games to see what they will do. A big stadium can paralyze a young man. I've seen plenty of camp heroes wilt in the spotlight. Tedford obviously feels he's got some guys who are ready for their close ups.
Mike Leach (Pullman, WA)
Am I really as smart as you portrayed me in your best case worst case scenario?
Ted Miller (3:15 PM)
I think it's great that you can talk about a lot of different things other than football. If I were picking a coach with whom to play Trivial Pursuits, I'd pick you...
Nate H (Salt Lake City, UT)
Honest chances of Utah knocking off USC for the South division crown?
Ted Miller (3:16 PM)
Always an honest chance, particularly with the Utes at home. I don't expect to pick Utah to win, but I wouldn't faint if it happened. Utah ran with USC last year in the Coliseum. But can Jordan Wynn score enough to keep up with Barkley and Co?
Mike (San Francisco)
Do you like Cal's chances at tOSU?
Ted Miller (3:17 PM)
yes... good chance for an upset.... like the Bears D vs. the Ohio State offense.
Will (Northridge, Ca)
You are Overrating Utah and Stanford, and Underrating Arizona and California.
Ted Miller (3:18 PM)
maybe... it's just preseason chatter. I've been wrong before. Well, not really, but I'm being humble.
If Oregon and USC meet Nov. 3rd with both ranked in the top 3 and the final is close. Any chance that they meet again in the pac-12 championship game with both having a shot to make the natty?
Ted Miller (3:19 PM)
Extremely remote unless the rest of college football implodes... circumstances were fairly unique last year.... hard to believe there won't be a team from the SEC or Big 12 that wouldn't get a slot in the national title game...
Gowazzu02 (Again definitely not at work)
Ted, Whats your beverage of choice next Thursday at 7pm pst?
Ted Miller (3:20 PM)
Tim (San Diego)
If Max Browne comes in strong in the spring and wins the starting job at USC, which quarterback, if any, is more likely to transfer?
Ted Miller (3:22 PM)
wow... your focus is odd... no idea. I don't think USC announces a starter next spring, particularly if Browne looks good. Recall that Barkley didn't win the job -- Aaron Corp did -- until injuries opened the door in fall camp.
Eric (Albany, OR)
Ted, anything I see about the Beavs is that they have the potential to be a good team, but are consistently picked to be last in the conference. Are the Beavers a last place team this year?
Ted Miller (3:23 PM)
Colorado is consistently picked last in the conference. Phil Steele picked the Beavers to finish ahead of washington in the North. If the Beavers stay healthy, they are a bowl team.
TS Glassman (Seattle, WA)
I went to a small private school for undergraduate. My wife just got into Medical School at the University of Washington (very proud). Am I allowed by College Football Law to become a big Husky fan or do need to attend the University?
Ted Miller (3:25 PM)
You are allowed. Of course, if you were a Duck or Coug before, that might be an issue.
Ted - which loyal poster/follower in the Pac-12 blog do you enjoy the most?
Ted Miller (3:26 PM)
I love everyone. Even the bitter, angry ones. (But you know you're the best Cougarbrian... just don't tell anyone).
What percent of the questions people ask you do you find completely annoying?
Ted Miller (3:26 PM)
Aidan Smith (Portland, Oregon)
any chance DAT could get into Hiesman discussion?
Ted Miller (3:27 PM)
Absolutely... he might post more spectacular plays than any player in the nation... if he can get the 1,000 yards rushing/1,000 yards passing number, that would get him to New York, no doubt.
Justin (Salt Lake)
Who wins BYU vs WSU? game 1..
Ted Miller (3:28 PM)
BYU is a two TD favorite... take the points.
Kyle (Austin, TX)
Chances Keith Price wins Pac-12 POY?
Ted Miller (3:29 PM)
Sure... if he posts a couple of early-season upsets, he could get into the Heisman discussion. But Barkley and Thomas start out ahead of him, in large part because their teams are likely to win more.
Jeff Tedford (Bizerkeley)
what gets me fired this season? how many wins best case scenario?
Ted Miller (3:31 PM)
Four or five wins probably would make your footing a bit questionable... Best case is probably 9. If Maynard takes a step forward, as he did late in the 2011 regular season, it could be a nice year in Berkeley.
Your predictions are about 99% correct. So, what day will I be able to watch the Pac-12 Network on Direct TV?
Ted Miller (3:33 PM)
According to Jon Wilner, there's progress there... it's possible the Pac-12 Network and Direct TV will hook up this season... let's hope so.
What's the real reason(s) Javis Jones didn't get clear by USC medical staff? Jones was cleared by Duke and Vanderbilt doctors in flying colors to continue to play football again. He is ALL UNIVERSE linbacker playing for Georgia and sure NFL bound. WHAT GIVES? I'm not even get into Armond Amstead's situation at this point... Why is USC medical staff so beyond reasonable to clear the players at times?
Ted Miller (3:34 PM)
I don't have an answer for you. But I have asked the same question. Lane Kiffin has too. All I can give you is USC wants to be safe, rather than sorry. An ethical position that is sometimes painful. Jones is a beast.
John (Salem, OR)
Jump forward a season. Matt Barkley is now gone. Does USC have a difficult time for say another two seasons starting in 2013?
Ted Miller (3:36 PM)
Define difficult. I don't think USC is a top-5 team in 2013. But there's lots of young talent, which is good enough for 9-10 wins. It you pencil things out, the the Trojans should set up nicely for 2014, even with just 75 scholarships.
Nate H (Salt Lake City, UT)
Let's get to the heart of the conversation here. Best Coeds?
Ted Miller (3:37 PM)
Did you mean codes?
How much longer do I have before fans consider the team's improvement to have stalled?
Ted Miller (3:39 PM)
If the Huskies win 7 games vs. their schedule, and then win a bowl game, that's a successful season. I like how things set up for 2013. If the Huskies are still hovering around .500 then, I would suspect there will be some grumbles.
your father (next to your mother)
What will stanford need to do in week 3 to beat SC?(other than knock the scheisse out of Barkley)and what do you think the chances are of Stanford pulling off an upset?
Ted Miller (3:42 PM)
hard to believe that won't be a competitive game as Stanford has controlled the series of late. Yes, hitting Barkley early and often is a key. The Stanford front-7 will match up well with anyone. But the Cardinal secondary will have to take a step forward to pull the upset. And there's the little matter of that being a HUGE early-season test for Josh Nunes.
Landon (Atlanta, GA)
With it's smaller OL and DL, how far would Oregon make it in an SEC schedule?
Ted Miller (3:45 PM)
Go average out the weights of Oregon's offensive and defensive lines this year. My guess is they are fairly comparable to most SEC teams. The O-line might be a little lighter due to the demands of a no-huddle spread option and the loss of 325 OT Mark Asper.
Hey Ted- remember that time that other PAC 12 team with a 'smaller' OL and DL played Alabama? = Not scary.
Ted Miller (3:47 PM)
Yes... and not every SEC team has a D-line like Alabama and LSU. I will say the Tide O-line looks pretty beastly this year, not unlike Stanford last year.
Erik (Vancouver, WA)
What are the chances that USC or Oregon will NOT win the pac 12? If not who?
Ted Miller (3:48 PM)
I would be very surprised if Oregon and USC don't play in the Pac-12 title game... I hate to act like things are a done deal because they are not, but both are top-five teams for a good reason.
Which OOC game outside of Pac 12 country do you most want to attend?
Ted Miller (3:49 PM)
Washington at LSU... Tiger Stadium is great before, during and after the game. And good press box spread.
IPM (Park City, UT)
How much will the utah defense miss Brian Blechen for the first three games? Also, is there any chance that he won't earn his position back.
Ted Miller (3:51 PM)
He's one of their best and most versatile players, so he leaves behind a hole. I'd expect, if he gets back on Whittingham's good side, that he will quickly rejoin the starting lineup.
Huskies at LSU. Besides being EXTREMELY lucky.... what would UW need to do to pull the upset?
Ted Miller (3:52 PM)
An epic game from Price and a handful of turnovers from LSU.... Recall though that Oregon State should have won down there a few years back if not for 3 missed extra points. Not an impossible upset.
Is Isi Soflele a underrated back?
Ted Miller (3:54 PM)
yes... but C.J. Anderson is probably going to share carries with Sofele this year... Bears are deep at RB...
Kevin (Reno, NV)
With the need for playmakers in Tempe, does DJ Foster make a huge splash as a freshmen, and challenge for national Freshmen of the Year honors?
Ted Miller (3:57 PM)
Maybe... but Cameron Marshall is a horse. Will Foster get enough touches? i doubt Foster will get national honors, but he could get some Pac-12 attention... it seems like Arizona State fans are eager to write in all these Frosh and JC guys. I'd advise patience. Preseason practices more often than not don't reveal much. Let's see how things look after three or four games.
How long do you think Utah fans are going to ride the wave of beating Bama in the Sugar Bowl?
Ted Miller (4:02 PM)
for a while... the amusing re-writeing of history -- "Alabama didn't want to be there" is completely absurd... that was the Tide's first Sugar Bowl since 1993... and no body thought the Utes had a chance. They absolutely and without question or qualification physically dominated that game. There is no reason to believe if the teams played 10 times, Utah wouldn't win 7. Tide fans unwillingness to admit this truth allows Utah fans to dwell on the game for a long while. College Football Rules: 10.7.9.3.
Say something nice about my favorite team.
Ted Miller (4:02 PM)
I really admire your team. Gentlemen and scholars.
Ted Miller (4:03 PM)
OK gang... time for me to roll on. Thanks for stopping by. See you next week. Get your game faces ready.
