James Walker (4:05 PM)
Good afternoon all. Let's talk about the AFC East.
Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)
How do you think C.J. Spiller will do this season if F. Jackson stays healthy? I keep hearing he will play as a receiver and the 2nd back.
James Walker (4:06 PM)
Spiller will play some WR, but that's nothing new. He did the same last season before Fred Jackson's injury. I think the goal for Spiller if Jackson stays injury-free is about 500-600 yards.
To me, Landry looks insanely good right now. Do you think he will make the transition from Limpin' Landry to "Legandry"? Does he have potential to be a season changing sort of dude?
James Walker (4:07 PM)
Landry is bringing exactly what the Jets want. He's an enforcer in the back of the defense. Landry has always been a solid player. He's just hurt too often. If Landry stays healthy, Jets fans will be happy with him.
billy (vegas) [via mobile]
Whats up JW... IMO i think the fins should try and trade vets like dansby, burnett, and bush if they can. They might be able to get some decent draft picks or even a decent wr for those guys. what do u think?
James Walker (4:09 PM)
It's not that easy, Billy. These players have big contracts that someone else has to be willing to take on. A key part of the Vontae Davis trade is he only gets paid about $2 million over the next two years. That's cheap for a player with his talent, making it worth the risk for the Colts.
do the dolphins have a plan or are they just reacting?
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Well, when Karlos Dansby is in your locker room and saying he's not sure what direction the team is taking, that is telling. I think Miami does have a plan, the problem is the Dolphins won't admit they are rebuilding. That is coming off as confusing when every move that is made says as much.
James Walker (4:12 PM)
The Dolphins have avoided the "rebuild" word like crazy this offseason. I'm not sure why when everything they do says they are starting over.
Curious as to if the Pats will redirect focus towawrds Welker's contract situation now that the Twin terrors are signed?
James Walker (4:15 PM)
The Patriots can't egotiate with Welker by NFL rules. The deadline for players with the franchise tag passed weeks ago. New England can talk to Welker again after the season when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Unless he takes below market value, I don't see him back with the Patriots after this season.
David N. (Atlanta)
How confidant are you the Pats would win the division if Brady goes down? Like Sanchez he is not getting time to throw and he is taking a beating early. Do the Bills really have the best O line in the division!?
James Walker (4:17 PM)
If Tom Brady gets significantly injured, that changes everything. The playing field is much more even if the Patriots have to go with Mallett or Hoyer for a long period this season. But Brady is healthy and New England is a sizable favorite until proven otherwise.
Chris (New York)
Haven't the dolphins been rebuilding for 12 years now?
James Walker (4:19 PM)
Miami went to the playoffs in 2008. If you want to say the Bills have been rebuilding for 12 straight years, that would be a factual statement.
Matt (orchard park)
james, week 1 bills @ jets take your pick as to who throws for more td's fitz or sanchez?
James Walker (4:21 PM)
I already made my season picks over the weekend in the blog. I'm still debating whether I should do week-by-week picks in the blog. What do you all think? Yay or nay?
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi, What's going on with the Jets offense - 1 it seems like they got their field goal kicker set for the season based on their 3 preseason games but what will happen with Tim Tebow and the rest of the Jets offense?
James Walker (4:24 PM)
Rich, the Jets are just not good offensively. They weren't good last year and they aren't good so far this year. The play-calling this preseason has been vanilla. But the lack of execution (blocking, drop passes, poor throws) is something you can gauge. NY has a long way to go offensively. Fortunately, the Jets' D should be very good.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
When will the New York Jets score their very first Touchdown of 2012 since they have not scored a Touchdown in their 3 Preseason Games?
James Walker (4:25 PM)
I think the Jets will get in the end zone this week. The odd thing is Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow won't be the QBs.
if you keep it to AFC east games, it would be fun
James Walker (4:27 PM)
Yes, I only pick division games in the AFC East blog.
Jud (Utica, NY)
Do you think Andre Reed should be in the Hall of Fame?
James Walker (4:29 PM)
I don't have a Hall of Fame vote. So take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think Reed was a very good WR in his career. But Reed was not an elite, Hall of Fame WR. Just my opinion.
NYJetsFan (new york)
I say the Jets win the division this year, what do you think?
James Walker (4:31 PM)
I picked the Jets third behind the Patriots and Bills. I think their ceiling is second place. I would be surprised if they won the AFC East.
David (Providence RI)
Why are you and the rest of the guys at E!SPN so fascinated with a backup QB who can't throw?
James Walker (4:32 PM)
Vince Young was a former first-round pick and a big name. That's why. :-)
Shane (SoCo, Maryland)
I saw your post about Miami picking up a receiver. It seems like James Jones would be a good pick up. Do you think Jones would be good for the team? Are there any other receivers who seem to be realistic options?
James Walker (4:34 PM)
Jones is the most realistic option, because of the Philbin connection and because he's not a huge name with a huge price tag. Jones is the fourth player on Green Bay's depth chart. If Miami offers a high draft pick, I don't see why the Packers would want to hold onto him. But will the Dolphins overpay for a Packers' backup? Tough call.
Do you think Tannehill finishes the season as the starter?
James Walker (4:36 PM)
Barring injury, there is no reason to pull Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins aren't going anywhere this year. They are much like Jacksonville last year when they stuck with Blaine Gabbert through some ugly football. If you're rebuilding with a first-round QB, you have to stick through the growing pains.
James Walker (4:37 PM)
Pulling Tannehill in and out of the lineup for performance could ruin his confidence. Miami doesn't want a shaken quarterback. The Dolphins have seen enough of those.
My understanding is that veterans that get released become free agents and do not go through waivers, do you think Gaffney is likely to return to the Pats if/when he gets healthy?
James Walker (4:39 PM)
Yes, Jon. By rule vested veterans with more than six years experience do not go through waivers. Gaffney can sign anywhere. The Dolphins may have had a better chance through waivers, because Gaffney may want to eventually sign with a contender.
Where would you rate the Dolphins defense?
James Walker (4:42 PM)
A bit overrated. If you look back at my blogs in the spring, I've been saying that for a while. Miami was 15th in total defense last year. But they got pub like it was top 5 or top 10. It's a solid run defense but allows too many big passing plays. Trading Vontae Davis won't improve that.
Miami would be foolish to offer a high draft pick for James Jones...4th rounder at best
James Walker (4:44 PM)
A fourth-rounder probably won't cut it. Packers, if they're smart, will keep their depth. The Dolphins are in need, not Green Bay.
Adam (South Carolina)
What do you think was Nix's reasoning behind trading a draft pick for Jackson and then releasing Young?
James Walker (4:45 PM)
The Bills just think Tarvaris Jackson is better than Vince Young. I'm not big on either guy. But if Ryan Fitzpatrick performs, none of it matters.
Harry (Babylon, NY)
Has the Bill's poor preseason given you 2nd thoughts?
James Walker (4:47 PM)
Nope. The Jets and Dolphins are looking just as bad, if not worse. I'm confident in second place for Buffalo.
Dolfan #1 (MIA)
I think the Dolphins have a good chance at making the playoffs and winning it all this seaseon. What do you think walker?
James Walker (4:47 PM)
I think you're my "Homer of the Week," Dolfan #1. Congrats.
Dima (New York)
Who has the better season? Stevie Johnson or Santonio Holmes?
James Walker (4:49 PM)
Going strickly by numbers, I'm going with Johnson. The Bills will throw the football a lot more. More opportunities equal more production.
Nolis (Bayonne, NJ)
Do you think the Jets should send a trade for tebow and greene for MJD?
James Walker (4:51 PM)
Sounds like fantasy football to me. Not happening.
James Walker (4:52 PM)
By the way, the Jets are strapped with the cap. They are not paying MJD big bucks, which is what he's looking for. The Jets can't even find a way to extend their best player: Darrelle Revis. If NY freed up money, Revis should be the first to get paid, not someone from the outside in a trade.
Michael Feola (Hartford, CT)
What is the Dolphins fascination with Jeff Ireland who has made so many mistakes and could have ultimately cost the Dolphins getting higher profile coaches like Jeff Fisher or maybe Bill Cowher?
James Walker (4:55 PM)
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is convinced Jeff Ireland is the right guy for the job. So Ireland has job security.
Which week 1 game are you most excited to see?
James Walker (4:56 PM)
Jets-Bills. I will be at MetLife Stadium covering that game on Sept. 9. That's a big opener for both teams.
Gary (Davie FL)
do you think miami will trade for a WR before the season and who do you think they can get?
James Walker (5:00 PM)
I think the waiver wire and picking up cuts are more likely.
James Walker (5:00 PM)
Thanks for the great questions, everyone. Check back next week.
