Stephania Bell (3:02 PM)
Hi everyone. I'm still recovering from the high of the 49ers performance on Monday night...and their help in getting me a win in my fantasy league. With three games coming up Thursday, this week looks to be a bit of a mess...
Courtney Farrar (San Diego)
Hey Stephania, Crazy game last night. As a Seahawks fan, I'm more nervous than before. Wondering your thoughts on Percy this week. Is he a: If he plays, you start him? (PPR league)
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Courtney: My gut says I'd play him if he's active. The reality is though that I want to see what he does as the week progresses. If it turns out he never practices and comes down to a gtd, then I'm looking at my options (and prob earlier than that given that my options might be playing Thursday). Now the team says most of the swelling is down but he's still pretty sore (to be expected). I'd like to see what he does Weds since they seem to think he might be able to practice then.
What are the chances Reece retains his starting job this week given the health of Oakland's other RBs?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Brice: Excellent. His performance was strong and I haven't heard anything yet to convince me that McFadden will be ready by this weekend. That could change if he returns to practice late in the week. We know he tested the ankle with some running last week but we don't know how it responded. Still think it could be another week delay though.
Stephania.. This DeMarco Murray situation is getting frustrating. Being here in Dallas every week I hear he is close but then nothing changes.. My question for you is do you think he is back next week? I need to decide if I need to make a move or not as currently I have Rice as my # 1 and now Hillman as my # 2.
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Duane: I hear you. I have referenced precisely that frustration and I think it comes from exactly what you're saying. Lots of optimism (and largely from Jerry Jones the first few weeks)but back then there was no real chance he'd be back. All I can tell you is that so far he has only been running on the side (and even then, don't know how much). No practice. Don't think Thursday is in the cards (which I said last week) but the running does suggest he is now making measurable progress. Put it this way. I would not COUNT on him next week. But I do think, for the first time, that it's reasonable we could see him return in Week 13.
Pablo (Santa Fe)
Did Julio realize the pain was too much, or did he hurt his ankle further? Thanks
Stephania Bell (3:15 PM)
Pablo: It's hard to know what exactly the situation was from afar. Sometimes these in-game aggravations don't represent a serious setback but rather something where the player tweaks it, realizes it's not a good idea to continue and leaves. No word yet on his prospects for this week but imagine it could be another gtd.
Do you expect Sproles to play? If not, I need to play Leshoure on Turkey Day
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Bobby: The fact that Sproles was so close, traveled west with the team and was being considered up to gametime tells you how near a return he is. Unless something goes significantly backwards this week, I expect he plays. Last week he was still dealing with some post-surgical swelling and it was wise for them to not push it in the end.
How are things looking for Garcon after actually spending a full day on the field last week?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Reese: I think the Redskins are happy he was out there. As Shanahan said, they feel he represents a big play threat. But in the interim, he's not doing a lot for your team. The sense is he didn't emerge any worse for having played, but keep in mind that this is going to be an ongoing situation where as long as nothing changes I expect he plays. But there's always going to be a risk that it does become more painful, more limiting.
hey stephania, thanks for your work. I am wondering here all this speculation regarding hernandez's health coming from? its the patriots, they never talk about injuries... and he has been "practicing" the past few weeks now and then not playing. Are people just assuming because gronk is out now that hernandez is suddenly ready to go? or is there some real fact behind all this speculation? thanks
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Matt: There are some hints at an improved status. Not all of them are publicized but Hernandez has been steadily increasing the amount/type of work he's doing. The injury reports only tell you whether a guys is not practicing, is taking limited reps or full reps. Full and none are easy to interpret. Limited though has a wide range so when a guy first returns to practice he might be very limited and then as he nears a return he may be limited only slightly. I do not believe the Pats would push Hernandez out recklessly just because Gronk is hurt. However, late last week I said I expected Hernandez to be approaching a return on Thursday; the timing just happens to work out very well for the Pats.
As a Spiller owner, I'm interested in hearing what the latest news on Fred Jackson is; is he playing this week?
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Sam: They haven't guaranteed it up in Buffalo but they do report that he is much improved and it appears he'll be ready to play.
Devin Brooks (Detroit)
Steph, you never answer me.. can you today.. pleasetwo question one Do you think Mccoy play Monday if you were betting? two: if you betting do you think Rob Gronk is back week 14 or 15? thanks
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Devin: You're killing me here...first of all, to be clear, am not betting. Second, no way to say with McCoy. We all know by now that these concussions are a day at a time injury situation. Only need to look at this past week to see how we can be surprised. Alex Smith was making progress following his head injury to the point of being able to participate in consecutive practices. Yet he was not cleared by neurologist to return which we learned on Monday. So any prediction I would make now would be useless. As for Gronk, I know he is aiming for the short end of the timetable but it will all depend on the docs satisfaction with the healing and how well they can continue to protect the forearm. Won't know much for a couple weeks.
James (A Giant Peach)
Congrats on your 49ers last night! It should be interesting to see who gets the start at QB this week. Also, any updates on MJD? He's "very questionable" this week apparently.
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Hi James: I think "very questionable" is terminology that reflects MJD is making some progress. Not in the "immediately ruled out" group anymore. But he's still not practicing and I do not expect him to play this week. Prob 2-3 weeks (and, of coure, that depends on how he responds to the increased activity).
How is Antonio Brown doing? Any chance he will play this week?
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Jake: Not expecting him to. Still recovering from the ankle and very questionable.
Stephania, what's the early outlook on Donnie Avery? Do you think TY Hilton will be starting in his place?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Jared: Concussion issue. One day at a time...
James (A Plagiarized Peach)
Which WR with troublesome knees do you like better ROS: Kenny Britt or Hakeem Nicks?
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
James: Nicks. Not really close for me. I know his productivity has been subpar with the injury issues but I see that changing soon (and Eli getting back on track). Just not seeing that with Britt.
Big Ben returns in _____ weeks.
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Jack: 2-3 weeks
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Btw, that is just a guess. I think it's a reasonable guess but there's always room for a setback.
Does it look like Bradshaw will play? With injuries, my only other option is Shane Vereen playing on Thursday.
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Dave: If we take his presence at practice Monday as a promising sign, I'd say yes. I have not heard any more detail about the tests he underwent during the bye week but if there were something drastic, one would expect he would not have been on the practice field. As of now, I'm assuming he plays.
Thanks! Kind of a fun game:Danny Amendola's foot injury puts him at ___%
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Ha! 50. That is my lame non-answer. I will say this. St. Louis Post-Dispatch made it sound like the Rams are fairly concerned about this heel/foot injury that cropped up during Week 11. Sounds like he's definitely not 100% and it make me at least somewhat nervous about whether we'll see him this week.
Arian Foster is on pace for 400 carries. Are you concerned about him waring down? He looked a little depleted against a lowly Jags D. (any chance Tate will be back soon to give him a breather?)
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Mike: He has definitely been getting a huge workload. Kubiak addressed that - sort of - this week by acknowledging how well Foster has held up despite all the work. Sounds like Tate has made progress from the hamstring but not enough to be available this week. Probably one more week.
The Thanksgiving games are a real fantasy pain. Do I just roll with Shonn Greene at flex or do I roll the dice that McCoy plays on monday?
Even though Mendenhall was proclaimed the starter, Dwyer actually split carries, is this a precautionary measure for Mendehall's injury or is Dwyer just the hot hand? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Simon. I know, right? Fun to have games to watch on Thanksgiving Day, not fun to try to plan fantasy strategy around them. Especially this late in the season. If it's me though and my only options are on Thursday for a very uncertain Monday night play (McCoy), I go with the less attractive but sure to play option. And obviously accept the risk that it's wrong.
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Funita: Sorry, out of order question/answer. The Steelers have made it clear that they plan on a running back rotation. I think that's going to be the pattern going forward, even when Mendenhall is comfortably healthy and their starter. They seem to have one guy hurt each week and this week Redman is recovering from a concussion. But it appears Mendy and Dwyer will share.
Jose (Miami Beach)
Stephania, please give me info as I'm a scrambling Gronk owner. What is the word on Dennis Pitta? Will he play this week?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Jose: Another concussion situation. The team did say he was feeling better by the end of the game but we all know that there are more formal tests to undergo besides "feeling better."
Carrie Matheson (Washington DC)
Any news on Greg Jennings' rehabilitation? With injuries of this nature, do you think he could be back in 85-90% of full form by week 15 or 16?
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Carrie: I do. I think once he comes back, he's in very good shape as far as low risk of re-injury and within a week or two of coming back, I think he works out any hesitation/apprehension of playing coming off the surgery. If all goes well, think he could return in another week or two (meaning Wk 13-14). Once he's back think his sotck rises quickly.
Congrats to your niners! What are your thoughts about Welker playing Thursday and do you think Edelman might taking his spot anytime soon?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Scott: Thanks Scott. I expect Welker to play thursday (I think that was part of the reason for limitin him in practice so much last week, knowing there would be two games in 5 days). Don't think Edelman takes his spot.
Steph big fan of yours. please anwser mine before you go. Your thoughts on your 49ers starting Colin over Alex at QB this week.
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Mike: Thanks so much. Many folks asking me this question and it's not an easy automatic answer. Very small sample size with Colin - but an amazing one. It looks like Harbaugh has left the door open to what I think is a plausible scenario. Kaepernick could start again (and he will of course if Smith is not cleared) and then they can see how they want to proceed after that. If Kaepernick plays as he did, then they continue. Part of it, in my opinion, was that no one was expecting him to deliver in the passing game that way. A lot of people thought he'd be a "running" quarterback and it turned out he ran very little. He brought Vernon Davis back to life. And I was totally impressed with his game management. Ugh...glad I'm not Harbaugh.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
That's it for today folks. And thank you so much for all the great questions. Wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and much luck in your fantasy games this week. Don't forget to set those lineups early...No chat on Friday because of the holiday but I'll see you here next week!!
