Dick Vitale (11:03 AM)
I am looking forward to great games the next few days. I will be calling the Michigan-Minnesota game tonight and that is a big one since both teams are 3-1 in the Big Ten. Both are coming off a loss, so this is crucial. I am looking forward to seeing Trey Burke in person. urke vs. Hollins should be a great matchup. Then on Saturday, it is Gonzaga at Butler and that should be exciting. Brad Stevens vs. Mark Few, two guys who have build consistent programs. Butler is riding a 12-game win streak. These are two legit teams that will make some noise in March.
Creighton and Wichita St. play this week, your thoughts on the game and when will we get the priviledge of you doing a MVC game like this.
Dick Vitale (11:05 AM)
I would love to see Doug McDermott. I have him as my midseason Player of the Year. Gregg Marshall has done a great job with the Shockers despite a lot of injuries. I do the games I am assigned to, though I feel the MVC is underrated. You have to slow down McDermott and try to contain him.
Welcome to the Twin Cities Dicky V. Enjoy the barn tonight, looking forward to your broadcast! Go Gophers!
Dick Vitale (11:07 AM)
Should be a great game between two top 10 teams. Minnesota leads the nation in rebounding, Michigan is second in defensive rebounding so something has to give on the glass. You have tio close the deal on your home floor if you are Minnesota. This is a very big game for the Gophers.
Brent (UNC Headquarters )
Please answer no one ever does. What do you think about unc and Roy Williams and what do you think the ceiling is for this season?
Dick Vitale (11:09 AM)
I think they have to defend as a unit and make a commitment to guard people. They lost quality talent in Henson, Zeller, Barnes and Marshall. The next few weeks will be telling, including the Gameday game against NC State. They have a lot of talent, led by James Michael McAdoo. There is a lot of potential.
Hey Dicky V, if Uconn was elgible for the Ncaa Tournament do you think they would get in as of now?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
I think they would have had a great chance. They made the right choice in Kevin Ollie to lead the program. He loves the school and communicates well. They are limited on the interior. They will bring in players and do well in the long run.
Harry Peel (Kansas City)
As of today who are your Final Four Picks?
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
I like Louisville, Indiana, Michigan and Kansas. If Duk had Ryan Kelly back...it is a different team without him...this is as of today, subject to change.
What about Bruce Weber? He deserves some love no? Nice to see an offense that is something other then throwing up a wild shot and hoping for the offensive rebound...love the motion offense
Dick Vitale (11:17 AM)
Bruce Weber found out that sometimees a divorce is good for all involved. He got a second opportunity and taken advantage of it. They had a good win at Florida. He is a gym rat who loves to coach. He had quality moments at Illinois as well. Kansas State has enjoyed a solid season so far and looks like an NCAA tournament team that could make some noise.
Matt (St. Louis)
How badly does the loss of Jesse Morgan hurt UMass in the A-10?
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
Whenever you lose your second-leading scorer it has to impact your team. The A-10 is very tough and Massachusetts will face a number of chellenges ahead. Derrek Kellogg has done a good job this season but this is a blow.
Andre (Tallahassee, FL)
Who is your darkhorse pick for coach of the year?
Dick Vitale (11:20 AM)
There are a number of candidates for Coach of the Year. One sleeper pick is the coach I will see this weekend, Brad Stevens of Butler. They are 15-2 with wins over Indiana and North Carolina. I think Creighton's cosch McDermott doesn't get enough credit. Tubby Smith has done a solid job. Coach K was my midseason pick. It is wide open and there is a lot of action to be played.
What do you think about Pitt's diaper dandies (Adams and Robinson) and how do you think Pitt's game will fare in the ACC next year?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
Pittsburgh did a number at Villanova and Jamie Dixon's teams will always be tenacious and competitive. Adams is a factor up front and will get better and better. The move to the ACC will be interesting. It is sad to see what has happened to the Big East.
Cj (Vegas )
Does UNLV have the skill to make it the final four? with the help of Bennet,Moser, and Birch
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
That was a big win at San Diego State last night. Big putback basket by Khem Birch late that helped get the Rebels to the winner's circle. Bennett has been the best diaper dandy in America. Moser has to stay healthy. Marshall is a factor. This is a deep team that has a lot of talent and Rice has them playing pretty well. They need to be consistent. Final Four? Maybe.
Dustin (Erlanger, Ky)
Dicky V big UK fan here what you think UK has to do to get their season back on track and do you think they will still make the big dance? I am still very hopeful bc they have to much talent.
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
Let's realize this is a young team that is still improving. The win over Tennessee on Tuesday was a gut check after losing at home to Texas A&M. Do not write of Big Blue Nation as they should be very competitive in the SEC, which in all honesty is a bit down this season. Florida, Missouri, maybe surprising Mississippi and Kentucky will be the teams to watch. Harrow is getting better. Poythress has to be more consistent. I think you will see Kentucky in the field of 68 and I would not want to see them in my part of the bracket.
Will Marquette make it 3 straight sweet 16s this year?
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
Buzz Williams' teams will always fight, scrap and claw. They have found ways to win in some tough Big East games already. It is hard to say Sweet 16 again, but I would not say that it is impossible.
Rick (Las Vegas)
How good is the Mountain West Conference?
Dick Vitale (11:28 AM)
Very good. I talked about UNLV and San Diego State already. New Mexico is ranked and Steve Alford's team will make some noise in the big dance. Boise State, which took the Lobos to OT, has been a positive, beating Creighton and Wyoming. This is a tough conference.
Andy M. (Houston)
Is Baylor a bit of a disappointment in your opinio0n?
Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
Because of the preseason ranking I guess you can make a case for that. Pierre Jackson is one of the better guards in America and let's remember there is a lot of young talent in Waco.
How about the Badgers beating IU? Some love for Bo Ryan, baby???
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
Bo Ryan gets the most out of his players. Shot selection plus great defense equals wins, baby. The Badgers are on top of the Big Ten right now. I think you have to give them a lot of credit winning in Bloomington.
Thoughts on Kevin O'Neill being fired by USC?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
I do not like the idea of a coach being fired during the season.
Dickie V, does John Groce deserve COY? Also, will you be doing any Illinois games this year?
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
Groce has done a very good job, though the Illini have hit a few rough patches lately. His name probably belongs in the group.
Can Temple be a darkhorse in the A10?
Dick Vitale (11:33 AM)
Yes. Let's remember the Owls beat Syracuse. Fran Dunphy has some talent and the league is so tough with Butler and VCU coming in.
How big of a win was that for Maryland last night? And what do they have to do to continue winning.
Dick Vitale (11:33 AM)
Big win over NC Satte on the Len winning shot at the end. Yes I think Maryland needs to build on that momentum.
Teddy (Coral Gables)
Is Miami for real? Bring on the Dukies.
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
Also a big win last night, winning at Boston College. Scary at the end with the foul of a three-point shooter. BC missed the last of the three attempts, giving Miami the W. The Hurricanes have hung tough without Reggie Johnson. Durand Scott is a PTPer when he is on. We will find out a lot when they face Duke. Hope they have a great crowd for that one as I will be there.
Are you sruprised at the decent season Xavier is having considering how much they have lost?
Dick Vitale (11:36 AM)
Chris Mack has done a great job putting together this unit. Again, the A-10 is a very good, deep league, and it will be a test night in and night out. Last night winning at St. Bonaventure will give the team confidence.
Max (Spartan Fan)
Good to be with you, Dickie V. Can you understand what is going on with Michigan State guys fighting before a game? They beat Penn State, but I did not understand what was up
Dick Vitale (11:37 AM)
Michigan State got to the winner's circle. I am not sure what happened between Dawson and Payne but Tom Izzo handled the situation and I believe they will all move on.
What do you think of Maryland rushing the court last night after beating NC State? My initial thought was it was a bit too much for a early season game, but fan exuberance is always a good thing, I guess
Dick Vitale (11:38 AM)
It concerns me because I always worry that fans could get injured.
First met you whe you were Detroit AD and VCU played Detroit in nit game. Titans had some greats with Tyler, Duerod and Long. What do you think about the Rams and would love to see you announce the VCU vs Butler game in early March in Richmond. And go TB Rays!
Dick Vitale (11:40 AM)
I am not scheduled for that game and I am not even sure if that is on ESPN, to be honest. As for the Rays, with the pitching they have, they will always stay in games.
Dick Vitale (11:54 AM)
I am looking forward to the game tonight at Williams Arena. I am also excited about the raffle we are doing to raise money for the V Foundation for cancer research. If you go to dickvitaleonline.com, you can get more details on how to win a 2013 red Mercedes. There are only 150 chances and they will go fast...
Dick Vitale (11:54 AM)
I want to conclude that it is so sad to think abou interviews and all of the articles about what is going on in the world of sports. There is so much embarrassment and humiliation in the world of sports. I know the Lance Armstrong interview is tonightand I don't need to watch it because I know what he will say. He lied and duped so many people. I will say that he did impact cancer research with his Livestrong involvement and that was a positive in the community battling the dreaded disease. As a competitor it blows my mind that he could live a lie for so long. As for the Manti Te'o situation, it breaks my heart. Athletes today are often about me, me, me. He was not liek that, loving his teammates and the school. The truth about the situation, I just don't know. You can speculate all you want but who knows besides him. I do feel he should face the nation and tell the truth. I was there on stage before the Michigan game and I heard of his pain and suffering over his losses. Now I want to know if in any way, shape or form was he involved in this hoax? He owes his Notre Dame family and the fans some answers. It is depressing when you love sports and love people to think about these stories. See you next week.
