Mason Kelley (1:59 PM)
It is the last Friday before signing day, which gives us one last chance to talk Washington recruiting before prospects sign their letters of intent Feb. 6. I will be answering questions for the next hour. Let's get this going.
Troy (Seattle)
Do you have a list of the already committed prospects coming to Seattle to just hang out and do an unofficial, and perhaps work on those that are uncommitted and visiting?
Mason Kelley (2:02 PM)
I do have a pretty good list. It sounds like Jermaine Kelly, Joe Mathis, Dane Crane, Azeem Victor, John Ross and Ryan Turman are all expected to be in Seattle this weekend. I talked to Kelly on Thursday and I will post an update as soon as I wrap up this chat. There could also be a surprise name or two before everyone heads home Sunday.
TJ (Auburn)
What is the read on the Robinson twins switching committment from Ducks?
Mason Kelley (2:04 PM)
At this point, it sounds like Tyrell and Tyree Robinson are still solid to Oregon. However, considering they are taking official visits to Washington this weekend, the Huskies aren't completely out of this race yet. A strong visit could give them something to think about in the days before they sign.
Scott Jenkins (Bothell, Wa)
What big surprises will the Huskies receive between now and LOI day?
Mason Kelley (2:05 PM)
Based on what I'm hearing, the biggest surprise could come from Nico Falah. If he ends up taking an unofficial to Washington this weekend, it would look good for the Huskies' chances with him.
Troy (Seattle)
How is Texas A&M able to take so many recruits? Will there be prospects left high and dry on signing day, or do they really plan on taking that many?
Mason Kelley (2:08 PM)
Through early enrollments and grayshirts, programs are able to take more than 25 prospects in a class. I'm not familiar with the specifics on Texas A&M, but there are definitely ways to over sign recruiting classes.
James (Seattle)
Any word if Jack is tripping to FSU?
Mason Kelley (2:09 PM)
Myles Jack has really shut things down recently. He was always one of the easiest kids to reach, but now he has been tough to get on the phone. As far as I know, he still plans to take his visit to Florida State.
CJ (Seattle)
Any news on the prized gem, Myles Jack?
Mason Kelley (2:11 PM)
I still think he ends up keeping his commitment to UCLA. He really enjoyed his official visit to Washington, but he has never changed his commitment status. He looked around and has continuously said the best fit for him is with the Bruins. Now, that could change in the days before he signs, but right now it seems like UCLA signs him.
Troy (Seattle)
Not a question.. just a statement. I think Nico Falah is struggling to make his decision because he knows in his head that UW is the better fit for him, but USC is the hometown favorite he grew up idolizing. Tough battle between the heart and head.
Mason Kelley (2:13 PM)
I would agree that he is definitely having a hard time with this decision. Based on what I'm hearing he has been torn between the two programs. Washington still has a very good shot at landing him.
Sam (Spirit Lake)
What about the O lineman Bob wrote about he comming in? sounds like a Taylor Hindy
Mason Kelley (2:16 PM)
I believe you are asking about Coleman Shelton. I found out about his visit Thursday night and did a little research. He has been deep under-the-radar. He didn't even have a profile page on most of the recruiting sites. Sounds like he is 6-4, 275 pounds. He really could be a diamond in the rough. If Washington is taking a long look at him late, it's because they feel he could help. Considering the number of prospects in the program and the kids Washington has committed they will be very selective with each recruit it adds over the 21 already committed.
Ken (Seattle)
Really excited about the collection of skill players here but still really concerned about the big uglies - particularly on the O side. Huskies have been continuously exposed by the lack of productive line play. What are your thoughts as this pertains to this year's class? Nice to hear all the noise about the skill guys, but.....
Mason Kelley (2:18 PM)
The defensive line class is great. I think Washington really landed some playmakers here. Now, on the offensive line, if the Huskies get Nico Falah and decide to offer Coleman Shelton and he commits, that's four linemen and I think things are fine there, too. Now, even if the program doesn't add another offensive linemen, I really like Dane Crane and Andrew Kirkland. Washington will be better on the line in 2013.
Sam (Bothell)
Will UW sign Kylie Fitts?
Mason Kelley (2:19 PM)
At this point, I don't think so.
bob (seattle)
Where will Daeshon Hall end up?
Mason Kelley (2:20 PM)
I still think the Huskies hang onto him. His local ties and the family connections in Seattle seem to be the difference to get him to sign with Washington. If he signs somewhere else, I will be surprised.
Keith H (Seattle)
Any idea what your dad wrote for his retirement column this Sunday? Inquiring minds would like to know.
Mason Kelley (2:22 PM)
I am not sure what his final column will be about, to be honest. I had breakfast with him yesterday and tried to keep the conversation about things other than the newspaper. I look forward to reading it, though.
Garrett (Seattle)
Any of our current commits in danger of academic ineligibility?
Mason Kelley (2:23 PM)
It sounds like Washington's current commits are doing some serious work in the classroom right now, which is a good sign. There are still some question marks, but things look good on the academic front, for the most part.
James (Seattle)
Any reasons why Eddie Vanderdoes may have cooled on the Huskies?
Mason Kelley (2:26 PM)
I don't know of any specific reasons. But it has been about a month and a half since his visit and he has been on a few other trips since then, so it would make sense if he is riding a wave of excitement from his more recent trips. From everything he has said, he is still open among his finalists and Washington is one of them. It still seems a bit of a long shot for him to sign with the Huskies, but he would be a huge addition to this class.
Jason (Bellevue, WA)
Should UW expect a commitment from Patrick Enewally today???
Mason Kelley (2:28 PM)
It sounds like a commitment is coming soon. Not sure if it will happen today. But Washington still looks to be in good shape with him.
Troy (Seattle)
What is the status of Riley Sorenson? It seems like UW was hot on the trail and now nothing... Not only that but it seems like Dane Crane recruits Nico Falah harder than his own HS team mate to come to UW. What do they/you know that we don't?
Mason Kelley (2:31 PM)
I haven't heard much about Sorenson recently. With the Huskies bringing in Cameron Shelton this week and, considering they are still hoping to pull in Nico Falah, it seems like they have moved on and Sorenson doesn't seem like one of their targets at this point.
Sam (Spirit Lake)
How good is Patrick compared to Jack?
Mason Kelley (2:33 PM)
It is hard to compare Patrick Enewally to Myles Jack. They play two completely different positions. Enewally is a defensive back, while Jack is a linebacker. Both would be valuable additions to Washington's programs, but Enewally seems more likely than Jack at this point.
Adam (Seattle)
Did Myles Jack take a official visit to Georgia or Florida State this weekend or is he going to take a unofficial to UW instead? Do you think Eddie Vanderdoes signs with UW?
Mason Kelley (2:35 PM)
As far as I can tell, Jack has yet to say anything on the record about his plans for this weekend. However, it sounds like his trip to Florida State is still on for this weekend. I don't think he was ever going to visit Georgia. It was either cancel FSU and take and unofficial to UW or visit Florida State. I think he's visiting Florida State.
Corey (Seattle)
What committed players have the best shot to see the field next year, and which are destined for a redshirt year?
Mason Kelley (2:39 PM)
In an ideal world, Washington would redshirt most of this class. I see some of the skill position players having the best chance to play early, recruits like Damore'ea Stringfellow and Darrell Daniels.
Daniel (Pasadena)
Are you relieved or sad that you wont have to answer any Myles Jack questions after today?
Mason Kelley (2:40 PM)
Ha! I didn't mind the Myles Jack questions when he was easy to reach. Now, though, it's tough because I don't have great answers to share. Hopefully he talks after his Florida State visit.
Richard (Skyline)
Has UW offered Ross Bowers? He seems like a legit prospect for the class of 2015 from here. Does he have any offers at this point?
Mason Kelley (2:41 PM)
He doesn't have any offers yet that I'm aware of. He is definitely on Washington's radar. He is also getting looks from schools like UCLA and Connecticut.
Sam (Spirit Lake)
Sorry I meant Bierria to Jack.
Mason Kelley (2:44 PM)
Keishawn Bierria seems like a very good prospect, and he would be a great addition to this year's class. However, I think Jack established himself as one of the best defensive players on the West Coast this season and he would be a huge pickup for the Huskies.
Troy (Seattle)
Regarding class size. How is UW going to be able to get 25 kids in? They didn't lose 25 to graduation/draft/or attrition...yet.
Mason Kelley (2:51 PM)
I will say this. Washington will find a way to get the kids the program signs into the program. If there are more scholarship kids coming in than scholarships available, I would expect more attrition.
Mason Kelley (2:54 PM)
Sorry for the delay. I just spoke to Myles Jack's mother. He is still a solid verbal to UCLA right now. He will not take his trip to Florida State. And does not have any trips, official or unofficial, planned at this point.
Ross (Seattle)
If Romar commits to giving Robinson a legitimate chance to play, do you think that could be the deciding factor in getting them to flip? Could you see them even splitting up, or are they a packaged deal all the way?
Mason Kelley (3:01 PM)
I think they will remain a package deal. I also don't see them flipping unless they are floored by this visit. I think Romar would give them a legitimate chance to play.
Mason Kelley (3:02 PM)
Sorry I didn't get to as many questions as I planned. The Myles Jack news took some of my attention. But thanks for stopping by and I will have plenty of information coming on HuskyNation leading up to signing day.
