Nick Friedell (2:33 PM)
What's going on everybody? Let's get this chat rolling ...
b (oak forest)
when d rose coming back
Nick Friedell (2:34 PM)
The only person who knows is Derrick. If somebody says they do they are lying.
sam from palos park [via mobile]
If derrick was cleared to play he should I'm tired of all the excuses he's getting paid right
Nick Friedell (2:35 PM)
I've heard this from a lot of fans and I don't understand it. Derrick is the only one who knows his body. If he says he's not ready to play, then he's not ready to play. End of story. Being physically ready to go is completely different than being mentally ready to go.
is it possible for thibs to loosen up? playing so tight is not helping them right now. perhaps making it fun would help them a little. someone needs to send him the memo
Nick Friedell (2:36 PM)
Thibs is who he is. He's one of the best coaches in the league. Does he wear on his players sometimes? Yes. But they still respect him because he wins.
Tom Boba (River Grove)
Should the Bulls send Marquies Teague to the D-league?
Nick Friedell (2:37 PM)
Thibs has said he doesn't like to do that. He would rather have Teague learn at the NBA level.
Nick, my man, I'll be at the game tonight! Hope to see you there! How is Kirk's elbow holding up? Bulls seem to play much better offensively with him on the court. He spaces the floor and plays smart defense. We need him for this strech run..
Nick Friedell (2:39 PM)
Thibs says Kirk is fine right now and the Bulls definitely need him. As we've seen though -- it will be tough for Kirk to stay healthy the rest of the way.
Why is Rip on a minutes limit still? He never gets playing time in the 4th, does Thibs not trust him?
Nick Friedell (2:39 PM)
Thibs trusts Rip -- Thibs doesn't trust Rip's body.
This may be a mute point but if Derrick is playing 5on5, why can he not sit on the bench and support the team? I would love to see him there. The only thing I can see is he doesn't want the media attention on him instead of the team, any ideas?
Nick Friedell (2:40 PM)
I think that's exactly why he doesn't. I think he doesn't want to be seen as a distraction to the rest of his team. If he sat out there that would be the only thing people would be focusing on.
I think there's a false narrative out there that sitting Rose out for the season would be better for him in the long term. Wouldn't playing in games only help his rehab? Dr. Cole said there is theraputic benefit to it. He should play for that reason alone. It should have nothing to do with the Bulls' chances to beat Miami or anything like that.
Nick Friedell (2:43 PM)
There are two sides to this one. Yes, as Dr. Cole said there could be some benefit to playing limited minutes ... but I think the fear amongst Derrick's inner circle is would Thibs really be able to stick to those limited minutes guidelines in the heart of a playoff chase? The bottom line is that if Derrick doesn't think he is ready to go physically and mentally -- then nothing else matters.
If they rule Rose out within the next week or two do you see the team shutting down Luol Deng to have his surgery? in other words tanking the rest of the way?
Nick Friedell (2:44 PM)
No. I think Deng is too proud to rest at this point. And there is no way that Thibs would let any team of his do that.
Rachke (Glen Ellyn)
What do you think will happen with Lu when his contract is up after next season? Do the Bulls let him walk? Can we re-sign him for less? Will Jimmy be good enough to start by then?
Nick Friedell (2:45 PM)
I know he will have to take a pay cut to stay with the Bulls. They aren't bringing him back for the same money. It all depends on how much of a discount he is willing to take.
Sean (Las Vegas)
Do you think the Reggie Rose comments will force the ORG to make a trade in the offseason rather then try and ride it out with this crew till 14-15?
Nick Friedell (2:47 PM)
I think the organization is stuck in a lot of ways. Nobody wants Boozer -- the Bulls aren't trading Derrick. So that leaves them with Noah and Deng, who still may end up getting wrist surgery in the off-season. I don't think they could get equal value back for either player even if they were to deal them. The one thing Reggie's comments did do was put the organization on notice that status quo isn't good enough -- the problem is that internally they knew that already.
The Chicago Bulls are in basketball hell, agreed? Not good enough to win a championship with a healthy Rose, not bad enough to get a high draft pick that can get them over the top, and a horrid cap situation.
Nick Friedell (2:48 PM)
This is what I've been saying for a year and a half.
Are we getting close to a point in the season where it wouldn't make sense to bring Rose back. Not enough time to get the chemistry needed for a playoff run?
Nick Friedell (2:49 PM)
Yep, I think we're only a couple more weeks away from that point.
Marc (Las Vegas) [via mobile]
Do you think that Teague would be a better back up to Kirk then Robinson? It seems like Nate doesnt wanna listen to Thibs sometimes and Teague looks good when he plays
Nick Friedell (2:51 PM)
The best way to answer that is by saying this: I think Teague will be the backup next season and I think Robinson will be gone.
What is the time cut off for a player decided if he will play
Nick Friedell (2:54 PM)
As far a drop dead date on whether or not Derrick will play this season -- I don't think there is one right now. But it's definitely something the front office has to be thinking about.
In your opinion, who will be the Bulls starting 2 next year? Marco, Butler, Kirk, or a free agent?
Nick Friedell (2:55 PM)
I think the Bulls would like to find another free agent -- but out of that group I think they would go with Hinrich.
What are the chances Korver or Brewer make it back to the Bulls in the future?
Nick Friedell (2:56 PM)
I think they are pretty good -- but it all depends on what they would sign for.
Are you at all worried that Rose is losing his passion for basketball? In his recent interview he said that his son is the only thing that matters to him (not that there's anything wrong with that) and then he says that he "wouldn't mind" missing the season. That doesn't really sound like the fierce competitor that we've known. He could have at least said that it was killing him to not be out there with his teammates.
Nick Friedell (2:57 PM)
Not at all. Derrick is still the same person. He wants to win just as badly as he ever did.
Nick Friedell (3:00 PM)
Guys, I'll say it again. Nobody knows when Derrick is coming back. Derrick is the only one who can answer that question. There's no set date as Thibs said Wednesday. I don't think it's going to happen any time soon, if at all this season, but Derrick is the only one who knows.
Which team has the best chance of beating the Heat, either conference.
Nick Friedell (3:00 PM)
The Spurs -- but I don't think they can get past the Thunder in the West.
Daryl Paul Lockwood (Chicago)
Nick, thx for the chat. Hey, I've always wondered how involved Scottie #33 is with the team. He's my all time fav Bull. Does he play any part in practices?
Nick Friedell (3:01 PM)
Scottie is around and at all a lot of the games. He comes to practices sometimes but I don't think he is as involved with the team on the floor as much as he used to be.
Matt (Lincoln Park)
Not that I disagree per se, but how the heck did we get to the point where one superstar, two All-Stars, and a near-max player (Boozer) aren't good enough? I mean, if this honestly doesn't cut it, what else could the Bulls have done?
Nick Friedell (3:02 PM)
Not missed on LeBron, Wade and Bosh.
nick, how tired are you of people asking when rose is coming back?
Nick Friedell (3:03 PM)
It's part of the job. I understand the frustration from everybody. It's the one question everybody wants to know. Hell, I want to know -- but I know the only person who can control that is Derrick -- that's it.
The year the Blackhawks won the Cup coach Quenneville took the Hawks to Alcatraz during the playoffs instead of practicing... Does Thibs need to take them to a fun place like that?
Nick Friedell (3:04 PM)
No chance he will.
Dale (Oak Park)
Do you believe at this point it's more mental or physical for rose at this point? Also do you believe that the possible return of rose has had a factor in the bulls losing lately?
Nick Friedell (3:06 PM)
I think it's a lot more mental right now. But that's what everybody goes through with this kind of injury. And yes, I think all the speculation has had an impact on the way the team has performed lately.
Matt (Lincoln Park)
The Bulls have had some bad losses this year. Are they tuning Thibs out without Derrick?
Nick Friedell (3:07 PM)
No. They still respect Thibs. Does he wear on them sometimes? Absolutely, but they still respect him. The bigger issue is that they are just physically and mentally exhausted right now.
What has been the best game the bulls have played? I went to the Bulls-Cavs game in early January and in my opinion that was their best one.
Nick Friedell (3:09 PM)
That one is easy in my opinion -- it was their win in Miami on Jan. 4. That was the best game Carlos Boozer has played in a Bulls uniform.
Javier(Hillside) [via mobile]
With or without Derrick, do u think the bulls have enough in the the tank to catch up to Indiana and win the central?
Nick Friedell (3:11 PM)
No. I think the Pacers will win the division no matter what happens.
Jonathan(San Antonio) [via mobile]
Nick when do you Taj is coming back, because in my opinion he's what makes the bulls one of the top defenses in the league
Nick Friedell (3:12 PM)
I think it's going to be at least a few more weeks.
Javid (Chicago) [via mobile]
Do you see all star potential in Jimmy Butler?
Nick Friedell (3:16 PM)
Silvy and I were talking about this the other day -- I don't know if Jimmy can turn into an All-Star but I think he could become a Ron Artest type player.
Steven (Glen Ellyn)
Bigger hype? The Return or The Decision?
Nick Friedell (3:26 PM)
The Decision. The Return is a massive story in Chicago. The Decision was a massive story all over the country.
Will the Bulls consider Amnesty for Boozer?
Nick Friedell (3:27 PM)
I thought we could make it through a whole chat without this one. It's a year and a half away ...
Nick Friedell (3:27 PM)
I'm out of here, guys. I will talk to you next week. If you are at a game come over and say hello ...
