Garry Paskwietz (4:59 PM)
Welcome everyone, let's get started
Garry Paskwietz (5:00 PM)
Justin Davis played the best in spring ball but i'm not going to rule out Su'a Cravens in the fall.
Bad Billy (Palos Verdes)
What is the latest on Matthew Thomas and Eddie Vanderdoes?
Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
Nothing on either player. Vanderdoes put out a brief statement yesterday saying that a full statement will be coming soon to explain where he is at. As far as we know, there has been no meeting yet between Florida State coaches and Thomas so there is no update on that front either.
J (Los Angeles)
All time favorite kickoff time? 12:30, 5:00, 7:00
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
Actually, it was the 1:00 kickoffs back in the 80's.
J (Los Angeles)
Road trip: should i choose Colorado or ASU?
Garry Paskwietz (5:03 PM)
I would choose ASU. Sun Devil Stadium is usually packed for the Trojans and it's a great atmosphere. Plus the Devils are supposed to be pretty good this year and it will be the first conference road test of the season for USC.
I GOT TWO GUT FEELINGS RIGHT NOW, STANFORD WILL BE THE BEST TEAM WE PLAY AND MAX BROWNE WILL BE THE STARTING QB. DO YOU ARGEE?
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
I think you very well could be right about number one but i don't see it on number two. As good as Max Browne is, there are two good ones ahead and him that will likely get a short before Browne uses his redshirt year.
keith (Los Angeles)
In your years of covering USC football who is your favorite Trojan of all-time?
Garry Paskwietz (5:06 PM)
Charles White. When i think of Tailback U, I think of Charles White on the final drive against Ohio State in the 1980 Rose Bowl. He ran as hard as anyone.
Kalven (Bay Area)
What are our chances of landing all 3 Polynesian OL? That would be a huge get.
Garry Paskwietz (5:07 PM)
I think the chances are pretty good with Mama and Talamaivao but it remains to be seen if Delp will get an offer. Mama and Talamaivao would form a nice Samoan trio along with Toa Lobendahn.
kimo (santa monica)
is it a good or bad sign that we have not heard much about David Sills? How legit is Brandon Burton?
Garry Paskwietz (5:10 PM)
It's certainly noticeable. Sills had been a regular on the camp circuit in recent years but not so much this year. At the same time, a very good crop of 2015 quarterbacks has emerged in Southern California including Josh Rosen, Brady White, Ricky Town, Hilinski, etc. Sills also only played in 4 games last year so it will be interesting to watch his progress this coming fall. As far as Burton, yes, he is legit. As legit as any current freshman you will find. Blair Angulo from our site is at the Serra 7-on-7 practice today and will have footage tomorrow of Burton in action.
Pietro (San Francisco)
Is Justin Davis really good enough to challenge Redd for the starting RB job?
Garry Paskwietz (5:11 PM)
Davis is very, very good but I think Redd has earned the right to go into 2013 as the starter. Silas is a tough, hard runner and when he was healthy in spring he was clearly the best RB out there. I do think Davis will get his share of carries because he earned that much based upon what he did after Redd went down.
In your expert opinion how will the starting secondary look, including the nickel back?
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
Seymour and Shaw at corner, Bailey at one safety spot with either Wright or Cravens at other spot. Brown likely the nickel with Hawkins and Shelton also options.
Garry. Any news on Matthew Thomas?
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
No. It's been very silent on that front with reports from the Florida State site that Thomas family has yet to meet with Seminole coaches.
This recruiting class will be large but it won't have many 5 star recruits. It is time for coach K to start developing these players. Since his time at SC he has not develop one start quality NFL player. His players have taken a step back. Marquise Lee would be 10xs better if he was with a coach that would focus on him being a better player and teammate. My fear is not loosing recruits to UCLA or other Pac12 teams my concern is that we will stop being the pround NFL factory that we have been for the last decade. We have to get these kids to be NFL ready!
Garry Paskwietz (5:15 PM)
I don't know if I would agree with the statement that Lee would be 10 times better with another coach but the point of your post is taken. This year's draft of Trojans into the NFL was largely underwhelming based upon where those players were projected just a year or two ago. The rumors start to circulate about player development and that's not something you want to see continue if you are a head coach.
I thought it was great that we finally offered Viane,, what do you think our chances are with landing him since we already have his cousin committed,, & one of his good friends with an SC offer in Mama??
Garry Paskwietz (5:17 PM)
I think the chances are very good with Viane now that he has an offer. This is a young man who grew up a Trojan fan and he has a lot of family support in the area. He is also tight with Damien Mama, who also has USC as one of his top choices. When you add those kind of things up, they point in a very positive direction for the Trojans.
Kalven (Bay Area)
Is offering a recruit that a team really don't want/need to get a teamate of his that a team really want/need a smart recruiting strategy?
Garry Paskwietz (5:18 PM)
No, and that is why you don't find teams doing it too often.
With the loss of Golson, does the ND game become a gimme?
Garry Paskwietz (5:19 PM)
Not at all. It certainly swings things somewhat for USC but there will still be a lot of good players and coaches on the ND sideline when the teams meet. That's what makes this rivalry so great, it's never about one player and you never know who will rise up to help win the game.
What is the max number of players allowed on a college football roster, & where do we stand with our current roster? When do we go back to having the max number of players on our roster? Thank you and keep up the good work
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
85 is the normal max but USC is restricted to 75 for the next two years. Kiffin said the roster would be at 69 in the fall without the injured George Farmer but it could rise if the team adds players between now and the start of the season.
Do you like the offer we gave out Tues to Matt Dickerson? Who is he, & can you tell me a little about his game? Thanks GP
Garry Paskwietz (5:22 PM)
Dickerson has been a fast riser this spring. He didn't have any offers as of March but he now has 15, including SC and Oregon among others. He's got real good size at 6-foot-5, 250 and has the versatility to play either inside or outside.
What position are we recruiting Austin Roberts at? & do you like our chances?
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
Wide receiver. It's hard to judge the chances since the offer is so new but the good thing is that Roberts is the son of an NFL coach so he will have a little more knowledge of the process, including the SC tradition of top receivers in recent years.
How soon until we offer Erik Brown? Were the coaches impressed with his work-out yesterday?? & do you think he's better than Devon Blackmon who also came from Summit H.S.
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
I don't think it would be a surprise if SC offers Brown at any time. He's got nice size and a long, lean frame. He was also one of the more impressive players this spring on the 7-on-7 circuit. i don't think he is better than Blackmon but I also think they are two different kind of players. Blackmon is more of an explosive playmaker while Brown is the more polished receiver.
Ed (New Mexico)
Garry, Do you think the no offer to Dwight Williams will hurt our chances with Adoree? Also, from the Noles Chat yesterday, it looks like the FSU coaches have not met yet with Thomas and his parents. Have you heard anything about this? Thanks.
Garry Paskwietz (5:29 PM)
It probably doesn't hurt as much as many people think it would but it doesn't help either. Dwight and Adoree' are supportive of each other but, in the end, each of them is going to make his own decision. With that being said, I think Dwight is a quality enough player to earn an offer. As far as Thomas, no report of a meeting from what we have heard.
Who are some must get in state guys for the 2015 class? & what are our chances with those guys?
Garry Paskwietz (5:32 PM)
CB Iman "Biggie" Marshall from LB Poly would be at the top of any wish list right now. Other top California players with SC offers for 2015 include DL Rasheem Green and LB John Houston from Serra, DB Marvell Tell from Crespi and WR's Cordell Broadus from Diamond Bar and Desean Holmes from Alemany.
Hello Gary, what is the latest on EV, Matt Thomas & Delvon Simmons? What's our chances of getting on these three transfers?
Garry Paskwietz (5:34 PM)
No updates on any of the three players. Vanderdoes will likely head to UCLA if he gets a release from ND. Thomas has yet to meet with FSU coaches, if he gets a release then USC is a very real option for him. Simmons has visited USC and Miami with Pitt and Penn State still in the mix, there have been no statements from Simmons on his favorites so far.
Will Kammy Delp get an SC offer? is he as good as the 2 OL we already have committed? how many OL are we taking this year? & are there any good in state OL that we should be keeping an eye on for the class of '15? Thanks
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
I think Delp is one of those guys on the bubble. I can see the Trojans taking as many as 5 offensive linemen for this class. There are already verbals from Lobendahn and Poland plus the possibility of Mama and Talamaivao. The Trojans will also keep pursuing Casey Tucker, a one-time commit. Where will things stand for Delp with those others in the mix? It's hard to tell but I wouldn't rule out an offer, that's for sure.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Do you honestly think that Walker has what it takes, both physically and mentally (including HEART), to be the starting LT? Also, does Falah project as a RT or LT?
Garry Paskwietz (5:39 PM)
He certainly has it physically but we can't say with certainty that he has shown the mental part to succeed at the standard of a USC left tackle. This is one of the glamour offensive line positions in all of college football and it takes a lot to fill the role. Nico Falah will find out soon enough, he is slated to begin his career at left tackle.
Are we a legit team to land Adoree? And how has his relationship with Marqise helped us, both being Serra products?
Garry Paskwietz (5:41 PM)
Yes, I would say SC is a legit option but I don't think it's as much of a done deal as many Trojan fans would want it to be. Adoree' didn't grow up in Southern California so he doesn't have the lengthy Trojan ties that many of the other local players have with SC. The relationship with Marqise and George helps, and Tee Martin has done a good job taking over as lead recruiter too. Don't be surprised if track plays a real big role in his decision as he is a star long jumper (just like Marqise) with Olympic aspirations in that sport.
Mattrell Mcgraw. We got Joe McKnight. Can we convert with another John Curtis player deep in SEC country?
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
There is an interesting connection as Ed Orgeron is close with his position coach at Curtis. You never know how a relationship like that can pay off in recruiting.
who do you think will be the first blue chip commit for usc basketball ?
Garry Paskwietz (5:44 PM)
If I'm going to guess at a blue-chip player i will say Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei. That would qualify as quite a splash for Enfield, wouldn't it?
Who is your pick of the regular enrolees to step up and contribute this season?
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
Michael Hutchings will be my first choice because I think he settles in as the back-up to Pullard and also contributes on special teams. I also think Steven Mitchell is very capable of making an early impact, the main reason I would list Hutchings ahead of Mitchell is the fact that there are some pretty good receivers ahead of Mitchell on the depth chart who will likely limit his opportunities.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Garry, what % would you give one of Wittek/Kessler transferring this year if the other is named starting QB?
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
I think it's a legitimate question to ask but I honestly have no idea how likely it would be for either player to leave. You obviously don't hear any mention of it now because both guys are in the thick of the competition but that could definitely change once a starter is named. This is a very delicate one for Kiffin because, if a guy does leave, it would mean only two QB's on the roster this year with one of them being a true freshman.
Gary,Thanks for all you do... That is all Fight On.....
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
thanks for the message Phil
Can you compare class of '15 QB's David Sills, Ricky Town, & Josh Rosen? What sets them apart from each other?
Garry Paskwietz (5:51 PM)
Sills and Rosen are your more typical throwers who can get the ball downfield while Town is a dual-threat guy who can add more of a run option. I've seen a lot of Rosen this spring and have really been impressed. It will be very interesting to see how they match up against each other over the next year and a half.
Will Uko, Bigelow and Williams or can they be as productive as SEC-type DLs?
Garry Paskwietz (5:52 PM)
Williams and Uko as the DE's in the 5-2 were one of the more pleasant developments of spring. Williams was the most dominant player on defense and Uko wasn't far behind. Antwaun Woods was actually the starter at nose and he held his own. Bigelow had flashes of good play but he also struggled with the adjustment to a new level of football, he will be fine as he goes along because the sheer talent is clearly there.
Oscar Batista (Irwindale CA)
Hey Garry! When will USC get to sign a full class? Say if USC doesn't sign a full in 2014 will those numbers roll over into 2014 even if they have sign a full class of about 30 scholarships?
Garry Paskwietz (5:54 PM)
The first full class of 25 scholarships will be for the class of 2015. If USC has unused scholarships from 2014, they could be used for early enrollees the next spring.
"local" CB prospects - with A jackson obviously at the top, where do you feel the fast rising Plattenburg fits in with Wadood Hale Pickett Lockett
Garry Paskwietz (5:55 PM)
I think he fits right in with that group (although I would put Pickett ahead of the others). To be honest, I think any one of that group could end up with an SC offer and it wouldn't surprise me, all of them can play.
Amir (Sherman Oaks)
Who will be the No. 2 RB? Do you think DJ will transfer after this year if he is the #3 or #4 RB? I am a huge fan of his and don't think he ever got the shot he deserved because he is not one of Kiffin's guys (a major and one of the only issues I have with Kiffin; i.e. him playing "his guys" or, put another way, he plays his favorites, not the best players).
Garry Paskwietz (5:57 PM)
I don't think a clear No. 2 has emerged yet but I think it comes down to Davis or Madden. The opportunity was there for D.J. in spring and I think it will still be there for him in the fall because he has the option of speed that none of the other backs have but he needs to claim it, he needs to consistently show that aspect of his game if he wants to take carries away from those other backs.
Who does Tucker commit to in the end? Why did he decommit in the first place?
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
I think he ends up with a final 3 of Stanford, ASU and USC. He decommitted because he was never really a firm commit in the first place, he was always clear about wanting to take a look around. He has said he will still consider USC and the Trojans will certainly still pursue him.
Garry Paskwietz (6:00 PM)
That's all the time we have for today. Thanks everyone for coming and taking part in the chat. We will see you next week.
