AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning gang! We are ready to go with yet another sixty minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand, so let's get started, shall we? Who is going to lead things off?
@GasMoneyBob (Chicago Tough)
With the Kemp hammy injury last night should we jump on Puig?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
No. The buzz is that Puig would not get the call if Kemp goes on DL - which, incidentally, is not a sure thing either. Joc Pederson's name is the one being posited as the call-up. Power/speed combo might be interesting in deeper leagues.
ROS Parker/ Miley?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Miley for me over Parker. Neither more than a streaming option at moment.
Tex: do you start him right away tomorrow or take a wait and see approach for a bit?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Hitters, I always throw them right into the mix once I know they're starting. The downside of an 0-for-3 is not anywhere near the damage a SP can do with a Phelps-like 1/3 of an inning in an ill-fated return from injury.
Sean (Ft. Lauderdale)
Time to board the Tommy Hanson train again?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Assuming he's back mentally, yes. There's never been a physical issue here - he was dealing with his brother's death and needed that extra recovery time.
I have Hanrahan and now Fujikawa on the 60 day DL. Who are some waiver relievers I should think about grabbing for the 2nd half?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Take saves out of the equation and work on solid IP totals... Melancon, Blevins, Doolittle.
Jason (New Jersey)
I own Josh Hamilton and Jason Heyward, should I expect them to pick it up at some point? They both have been dreadful.
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Much more optimistic with Hamilton... in his case, it's a question of his feeling good for a week or so and getting that swing back to where it needs to be. And after that week, trade him quickly before he gets hurt again.
Drop Garza in order to stash Beachy?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Very wild thus far in his return. I'm not starting him right now, so why not use the spot as a "spec" on Beachy?
RP Help!! (Last Place!!)
Reed or Mujica ROS? Thanks for the input!
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I don't think Mujica keeps up the stellar statistical pace he's on, but that said, he's my choice of the two for better fantasy value.
Can "Downtown" Dommie Brown keep this up? He once was a highly regarded prospect.
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I'm not on the bandwagon, and while I think he's a top-75 hitter thus far and could maintain a modicum of his current pace, I don't see him rising much higher on the overall list.
Any word on how serious the Kris Medlin injury is? What do you think we can expect if he isn't hurt ROS?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Initial report I heard was that he shouldn't miss a start. Of course, things can change overnight following an injury, but it's a good first update to hear. I think he's better than he's shown, but not anywhere near as "good" as last season's record. Right now, a streamer in standard seems to be where he ends up.
Do I regain my hr swing?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Wrist injuries might be the worst possible thing for a power hitter to have to try and overcome. So, I'd say, odds are against a full return to power.
How would you rank Marte, Fowler and Dominic Brown ROS?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Right now, Fowler, Marte, Brown.
Rather have Hanson or Wacha?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
What is Wacha? I mean, let's watch at least one game at the MLB level before making that call... not all prospects hit the ground running and Wacha is more likely to end up as Gausman for 2013 than Strasburg. And keep in mind, Cards will treat him with kid gloves and a straight-jacket.
Don Von Handburger (Boston, MA)
I have Gyorko and Middlebrooks at 3B. Should I think about Moustakas or leave the moose on the loose?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Too soon to think about the Moose, but if Will struggles when he gets back from DL...
Start McCarthy at Texas tonight?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Not feeling it. Ranked him at 15 in Daily Notes, which is not exactly a call to get him into rotations, given the opponent.
Thoughts on Cole Hamels fantasy value going forward.. he has been really struggling..
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Doesn't help him that he's gotten no run support. A lot of pitchers who have that happen to them feel they have to be perfect with every pitch and then they end up not pitching like they should... vicious cycle. Would love to see him win one blowout... could turn the whole season around.
Kennedy or Dempster ROS?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Dempster by a nose.
Is Kyle Kendricks start legit? Or his he due to regress?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Sure, it's legit. But from a fantasy value standpoint, it's also only good enough for No. 4-5 SP in a standard league.
Which OF to drop if needing to----Parra,Kubel,A.Eaton or revere?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
I'd dump Revere.
How do you see the Ike Davis situation playing out? Short stint in minors?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
It seems like every game from here on out will be Davis playing to stay with the team... maybe he needs that level of motivation to get back on track. But you can't keep telling him if he goes 0-for-4 tonight, he's headed to Triple-A. I think at some point, they simply have to send him down for a week or two.
Aybar or A. Simmons, ROS?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Aybar gets the edge at the wire.
How much longer do I run Gallardo out there?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
As you'll read in Friday's notes... he's actually pitched better in May than in April but somehow has gone 0-4 with a worse ERA. I think he's on the verge of turning this around, but the next 5+-run outing and I send him packing.
Time to drop Billy Butler?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Quite the contrary. I think it's time to get him in your lineup OR if you totally disagree, trade him while the batting average starts to give hope to fools like me.
Jay Bruce (Cincinatti)
Tristan has me ranked 26th in hit parade. How off is he?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
I believe I had Bruce as No. 34 overall in our recent re-ranks, so while I don't update my lists nearly as often as does Tristan, I would say he's too far off.
Is Tim Lincecum droppable in a 12-team mixed league?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Value-to-date is No. 67 SP. 12 teams and 5 starters = 60 pitchers, so I couldn't fault you for choosing somebody else to stream in there, no.
Lester or Cobb, ROS?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Both currently top 20 value, but I like Cobb to maintain more than I do Lester.
Ryan (st paul)
So the Zola ranking of Bruce at 218 is the one that's way off?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
It's the one I disagree with more. Until October rolls around, we have no idea which one is more accurate.
David Freese: salvageable season? Seems like he looks awful every time I tune in, while the box scores say he's awful pretty much every night.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
I don't see much in the underlying numbers to believe in Freese. And if he's also failing the eye test for you, then you should feel confident in moving on. There's no way you can watch every player closely enough to tell, but there's also no substitute for watching actual games and getting a "feel" for how a player is actually performing.
Which two closers would you deal for Kuroda in a points league? Bell...Janssen...Wilhelmsen...Betancourt.
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Betancourt and Bell... which means they're the two I like the least, if you follow my logic.
Is there any research on how rainy conditions/rain delays effect (fantasy) performance? Do they tend to favor the hitter or the pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
My guess would be that overall the pitcher gets hurt more due to long delays tightening them up and lack of control due to heavy moisture... and poor fielding that follows from the conditions. But I have nothing other than my own observations to support that point of view.
AJ - what are you talking about with Freese? He's batting .301/.370/.440 in May with a 9 game hit streak. He also has 3 doubles and an HR in his last 6 games... not sure what Bort is talking about with him looking awful
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Small sample sizes are great, aren't they? And his last 18, he's hitting .258. The last nine aren't really more telling than the previous nine... but because they're more recent, your impression is more positive on Freese. Human nature...
Thoughts on adding michael young as a backup infielder?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Backup? Sure. Just be aware he's missing this weekend due to a death in the family, so don't make a move if you absolutely require his services ASAP.
Mike (Lincoln, NE)
Who do you like better at SS in a pts league for the rest of the season...J. Rollins or E. Cabrera?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Leaning Rollins, but it is incredibly close.
Justin (Isla Vista, CA)
I have Victor Martinez, Sal Perez and just picked up Grandal. Who should I drop?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
You just picked up Grandal, so you probably felt you needed help. So it's really V-Mart or Sal, and I'd let V-Mart go.
Would you start Scherzer v. Baltimore tomorrow? There offense is crushing it right now. I got burned by Zimmermann last night.
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Any night, any pitcher can throw a gem or get trashed. We thin-slice it so much... too much sometimes. I have Max, I think at No. 6 for tomorrow. Starting him.
Except for in the case of Freese, maybe the last 9 ARE more telling since he could potentially be getting over the early season DL/nagging injury rust?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Absolutely. That's why we play the game. We gather all the evidence, filter it through our own biases, and make a call. The fact that different owners make different calls is a good thing, and a perfect impetus for trades.
My dad loves fantasy sports, going to buy him your book for Father's Day. Is it on Kindle or Nook? How long does Lackey keep this up?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
One shameless plug per chat, and here it is. Yes, "How Fantasy Sports Explains the World" is available on Kindle and Nook right now and --- in paperback coming in July. I think Lackey keeps it up all season long.
You starting AJ Griffin tonight in a points league??
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Absolutely. No. 4 choice for the day. DN charts translate pretty well into any format.
Lohse makes a return....wait and see?? I know its Minny but they have looked better.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Matchup is pretty good and I did rank him No. 10 for the day. He got through a bullpen session with no problem, so I have to believe he's OK. Holding my breath while watching, but yes, starting.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
That's my time, guys! Thanks for all the questions, but no way to ever get to them all. I am on Twitter (@ajmass) if I couldn't get to yours... until the next time, as always, as usual... good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
