AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Is it that time of the week already? Sixty minutes of fantasy chattage lies ahead of us, so let's get ready to throw out that first pitch. Second cup of coffee... wait for it...is in hand. Batter up!
Pat G (NYC)
AJ can you please save my league? I'm usually against vetoing trades, but this one seems like the case: 16 Teams, the 14th place team just traded Rios, Verlander, and Felix to the 1st place team for McCutchen, Werth, Hellickson and Wilhelmsen. His reasoning was that his team "wasn't working" and that he wanted offense. (Caveat the 1st place team is the commish and has veto power himself and he approved this trade.) The league is up in arms and we are on the verge of complete collapse.
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Many different things here, but the overall theme is - if you allow trades, allow them. Would you have any issue if the 1st place team sent Rios package to the 14th place team? Is the 14th place team trying to win? Just because "I wouldn't make this deal" doesn't mean the deal should be vetoed.
This is vetoable right? Braun and D.Price for Granderson and Phelps?!?! This trade is going to sabotage my league!
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Given the threat of Biogenesis punishment, I expect we'll see a lot of trades involving Braun coming down the pike. Whether or not he misses any games is still a question mark, but you cannot blame his owners for any deal they choose to make based on the real threat.
AJ - Since the middle of last season, Iwakuma has the best ERA in the bigs, even better than Kershaw... is this for real and is there no such thing as selling high here as we dont know what is ceiling is??
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Absolutely seems to be for real. Certainly more so than say a 9-0 Patrick Corbin. I'm certainly not looking to deal him by any means right now, but then again, if someone offered me Felix and a bat...
Who would you rather have ROS H2H: Braun or Kemp? Thx!
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Braun. He's playing. He'll continue to play. Even if there is discipline, with the appeals process, you still will get many more weeks of value.
Outlook on Freese? Looks like a turnaround is in the works...
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
No question, a .393 batting average over 15 games can be considered a turnaround. But still plenty of other guys I'd rather have at the hot corner before I call his name.
Thoughts on Colon ROS? Just sitting on the wire with awesome numbers so far. Hard to imagine he keeps it up right?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Almost impossible to imagine he maintains top-5 stats, which is what he's earned to date. And again, we've got the shadow looming on him as well... but I can't believe he's on a wire.
What do Nick Castellanos' numbers look like if he's called up soon? His shine has worn off since last year, but can he put up solid numbers?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Not convinced if he is called up that he stays up any longer than Austin Jackson's injury. Maybe a platoon player with Dirks?
Jeff (Portland, ME)
Any concerns with Matt Harvey slowing down or players catching on to his stuff? He seems like a solid sell high candidate.
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Certainly in a keeper league, there's no WAY. You keep. But in a one-and-done, even if you think he ends the year as a top-20 SP, he can do that with some regression, and from this point forward there might be 25-30 pitchers with better stats than he gets. From that standpoint, I have no issue with a deal.
Is Rendon worth a pick-up? 14 team H2H league.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Given his 2B status once he gets enough games under his belt, as a MI who probably sticks if he's the least bit comfortable in the field, definitely worth the risk.
I've gotten nothing from my catcher slot all season bc I just dropped M. Montero and picked up Grandal. Dropped Grandal for Doumit yesterday. Who do you like: Doumit, Sal Perez, J Castro or Pierzinski?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
You need to be a little more patient with these guys. I prefer Doumit myself, but if you're going to kick your catcher to the curb after a slump, you're almost MORE likely to catch the next "hot" guy's slump.
For the next month or so: Zobrist or Prado? Also, ROS?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
The best crystal balls are ones in which you look towards trends and constantly update them. Playing time issues aside, I don't see any real difference in forecasting one month versus three. Zobrist.
Steve (Madison, WI)
Do you practice responding slowly or does it come naturally?
jerry (kenmare, ireland)
Who finishes higher on player rater: Myers or Wheeler?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Wheeler, assuming enough wins are there. Nature of the player rater makes it easier for a pitcher to jump in mid-season and climb than hitters.
Jason Heyward, any hope?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Not holding out much of it, Obi-Wan.
Jason Kipnis (Cle)
Is my avg really this bad? Started on fire and now I can't get on base.....Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Not too concerned because the contributions in other categories are keeping you in the top-50 of hitters. I think it will bounce back.
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
To Steve of Madison, WI: I don't know what you are talking about.
Niese hit the waiver wire, worth a pickup or just let it go?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
We are the Knights who say Niese! Steer clear!
Why didn't Cobb receive the W last night?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Because he left the game with the score tied and Peralta retired a batter in the eighth to become the pitcher of record.
B (Allentown, PA)
With the various injuries in the PIT rotation, is Cole coming up? Worth a speculative add?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Yeah, at some point soon they kind of have to... I mean fans are going to revolt if guys like Charlie Morton and Andy Oliver are getting shuttled out there.
AJ, Jean Segura.. Should I sell him? He cooled off a lot since April.
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
As everyone expected him to... but timing is everything. Now, you're not going to get nearly enough from him in a deal - and he's STILL putting up top 10 hitter value despite the cooling off.
Jimbo (GB, Mass)
Jeez Puig on the add/drop list, added overnight by 97% of leagues! After his first week of big league play, does that number go back down to a reasonable number, or does his skill really warrant that surge?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
"Shiny new toy" syndrome fueled by the 2-HR game. If he goes 1-for-16, that number plummets. I think there's plenty of upside and reason to have claimed him - but certainly it would have looked more like 35-45% had he not gone yard twice.
I know the ESPN take from the fantasy writers has been to hold onto Braun. What about trying to acquire him in a keeper league where it looks like I'm going to be out of contention? Would Kemp be too much to trade for him?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Good question. Because the general consensus is that IF that 100-game suspension is what is coming and IF it ends up sticking, we're probably looking at 2014 for it to take place. Not sure that Kemp is the guy I'd trade away, but if the Braun owner is nervous, I'd certainly take him on, given the chance that all those IFS don't end up in anything.
Yes, hitting .302 over the last 2 weeks is terrible! Why can't people be happy they struck SS gold? He obviously wasn't going to finish the season hitting .345
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
It's human nature. Two pitchers can have identical stats, but the guy who had a 1.00 ERA in April and struggled lately is "automatically" considered to be worse than the guy who had a rough April and 1.00 ERA in May. That's one of the biggest hurdles that, as a fantasy analyst, we have to overcome - especially when we do those re-ranks, for example.
AJ, I have an early football question for ya, I have Stafford and Kaepernick at nice low prices in my 14 team auction keeper league and they both have the same bye week. Do I get rid of one or take the probably loss by starting no QB that week?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Just the one NFL question today -- most folks are probably here for MLB. I'd try and unload CK. Think you'll get a lot of value back and I fear defenses will be a lot better at keeping him in check this season.
Billy Jack (Portland)
James Loney or Lance Berkman ROS?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Loney for me.
Rank these OF for value next season: CarGo, J. Upton, Kemp
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
NEXT SEASON? Goodness gracious... way too many factors to consider on that one... but I'll leave them in the order you listed them for now.
What do you see happening with Albert and Hamilton? Can't trade them for current value (Hamilton has none anyway). Can't cut cause if they do go on a HR binge you'll be sorry......
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
I think you HAVE to take the names off the backs of the jerseys. Look at the stats and the trends and realize that especially with players who are dealing with injuries, the decline MIGHT be irreversible. If you can get value for them now, say for a player who hits 15 HR the rest of the way, then even if Albert hits 17 the rest of the way, say, then who cares? It's still a smart move.
You think the Royals keep Sal Perez at the 3 hole? And if so how much does that affect his ranking? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
You know what, there's a lot of statistical analysis out there about how batting order affects statistical performance and while I know that in general, batting 3rd may well end up with more run/RBI opportunities for a player than if he was hitting 9th, I don't base my rankings on it. To me, it's all about a player's underlying skills and much less to do with anything else.
Follow up on the Pujols/Hamilton question: does your advice change for a dynasty league?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Not really, except for the reality that older players are typically harder to move in "dump deals" when they are struggling.
jay (st louis)
should I stop streaming against the astros? this is getting crazy...
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Every team - even the Astros - have streaks of solid play. But outside of Altuve, Martinez and Barnes? Still not a lot to fear here. And even they're not that scary.
Is J Upton still a top 10 player? His K's are killing my team...
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Certainly, if Ks count against you more than as "just an out" the numbers don't lie. I try to factor in K/BB rate into my rankings, and right now to-date, Upton is my No. 27 hitter, so I guess the answer to your Q is NO.
Gausman or Straily?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
In 2015, probably will be Gausman. But for now, it's easily Straily.
Ok AJ!!! Who is the next prospect YOU have your eye on? When is it time to stash?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
I think Zunino is next hitter. But I've been waiting for Cole and Taijuan Walker on the mound. I think now is the perfect time to grab guys like this as Super-2 deadline is fast approaching.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Statler and Waldorf: BOO! Fozzie: Come on you guys, I have not told a joke yet.Statler and Waldorf: We know, we've seen your act before. In other words, let's watch the kid for a few starts before we jump to conclusions in either direction. Jury is still out, but I lean to him needing a bit more time.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
And on that note, thanks for watching the Muppet Show. We'll be back next week on the most sensational inspirational celebrational chat on ESPN. Until then, I am on twitter @ajmass, so feel free to track me down there. Peace out!
