Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Happy Tuesday everyone. I am still sleepy from not only the late hour of last night's games but the adrenaline! Won one league, had a couple losses, including one by 1.5 points. Fantasy heartbreak. How did you all fare?
any word on amendola missing thursdays game or are people just assuming hes out because he aggravated his groin?
Stephania Bell (3:05 PM)
Dave: Don't think it's an assumption. Think it's a legitimate possibility. Consider the short interval since clearly aggravating the injury. If he doesn't play, he has two weeks off. I would be making backup plans, as a precaution, then wait for final .
John (didn't start Roddy)
Ms. Bell, How long does it take for a normal athlete to recover from a high ankle sprain?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
John: It all depends on the severity. A low-grade high ankle sprain can heal faster than a severe lateral ankle sprain. But a high ankle sprain that doesn't fully heal can be very problematic. With that in mind, you hope that White is going to get fully better. Based on his in-game chest bump with his teammate who just scored a TD, his ankle can't be feeling that bad. But certain hard cuts/twisting is harder with a high ankle. He's approaching the 4 week mark since the injury and he should be coming into form soon.
While I don't wish injury upon anyone, I'm more comfortable playing Ridley this week with Vereen needing wrist surgery. How long will Vereen be out of the lineup?
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Clark: All we're hearing is he's expected to miss at least a month. Don't know which bone was broken or how extensive the surgery was. If fairly straightforward, may not be much beyond a month. Key is ability to grip for ball control, receptions. We'll know more when we start to see him working back with the ball - but expect a month.
Are you at all concerned about Reggie Bush moving forward?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Kyle: Sure. He's had his share of injuries. Detroit has not been kind to RBs when it comes to injuries either and Schwartz made it clear he's not going to lighten the load. They're liable to run him into the ground. The thumb not so much but the groin, easy to flare up. I will say that the fact he played like he did after the injuries suggests that it wasn't that severe. Expect him to play.
Any concerns for Dez this week or beyond?
Stephania Bell (3:15 PM)
Craig: Foot injuries (a sprain in his case) always a worry for WRs and RBs. He did come back in the game but the game was almost over so didn't see a ton of post-injury action. Not clear where in the foot the injury is, which can make a difference. He and the team say he'll play this week but naturally, a little concerned about whether this has the potential to worsen.
Hi Stephania! If you already owned Vernon Davis and Jordan Cameron, but Jared Cook was still available in your league, would you still try to grab him? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Josh: I'd pick up Cook and release Cameron. Like Cameron's talent but more worried about his QB. Think Cook has shown a sign of things to come.
Hey Stephania, What's the word on Percy Harvin? Do you think there is chance he returns, and produces, before week 10? His surgeon was "amazed" and he has tweeted about it recently.
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
Lee: It's possible but I wouldn't be penciling him in just yet. Based on what he had done, it takes about 12 weeks for biological healing. Meaning, it's HIGHLY unlikely you see him before the 12 week post-surgery mark. Surgery was 8/1, 12 weeks puts him around Week 8, I believe. Then you have to look at the conditioning, etc. Is he in FOOTBALL shape beyond the surgical repair. I will tell you this. When it gets close, pushing for an early return date doesn't mean as much as making sure you are fully healthy and at very low risk for harming the repair, especially with that price tag he cost the team. And they want him down the stretch. So let's see how he looks when he returns to practice BUT if you have space on an IR and can pick him up, it doesn't hurt.
In addition to Amendola being unlikely to play Thursday night, I've also heard his status is in doubt beyond week 2...is it time to panic?! Any further updates?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Matt: I hate to tell you this but my panic on Amendola was evident long before the season started, for exactly these reasons. You will probably always be nervous about his status. The update right now is one day at a time but obviously this could go on much longer.
Given the injury risks of Amendola (groin) and R. Bush (groin, hip, thumb), which would be a higher priority waiver-wire pick? Edelman or J.Bell?
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Dave: Bell. More clearly in line to get the workload.
Zac Attack (Mass.)
Own Zudfeld an already hurt! Status and at this point rather have Myers,Eifert or winslow instead? Thanks
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Well, Sudfeld had a pretty big college injury history so this isn't a huge surprise. I like Eifert, then probably Winslow to catch more regularly than Myers, although who knows with the Jets
Mike (Fl )
Any concerns with Jamal Charles Quad injury ?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Mike: Just the fact he has an injury is concerning. Andy Reid said Charles has his range of motion back, a good sign after this type of injury. Really depends how it evolves over the next few days - can he get to the point of full strength before the weekend.
Stephania: Quick baseball question!! Do you think Wright has a chance to come back within a week or two? Even if he does, will his playing time be only to get time in and fantasy relevant?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Stevie: Wright insists he's coming back but we have no idea when. Could be in a week to ten days, could be just for a couple games in September. I would certainly not be counting on him for your playoffs.
Mayank (Sunny SoCal)
Hi Stephania. Is Jonathan Dwyer worth using until La'Veon Bell (your sur-namesake!) returns? Meaning will Bell be out long enough to pick up Dwyer? Thanks as always for the insight.
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Mayank: Not really even clear yet how they'll be using Dwyer. Tomlin made it sound like he might do very little this first week. Remember they released him. So it's not like they have big plans for him. Bell may be out for a bit longer but I'd look elsewhere than Pittsburgh for a replacement.
Elvis (Tupelo, Mississippi)
I know you felt very good about MJD's health prior to game 1. Did you see anything healthwise against the Chiefs that would be of concern? Or is this just a very bad Jax offense having a very bad day?
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Elvis: The latter. Not concerned about his health.
Robert (California )
What are your thoughts on RG3 and how he looked?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Robert: He looked like a guy who hadn't played a real snap since January combined with a guy who was a little apprehensive, not just about getting hit but also about integrating some new plans on offense and not even really knowing how his body would react in live action. Definitely got better as the game went on.
During the game last night, Garcon took a long time to get up after a catch and was holding his thigh. He later came back in. Is he ok or did he injure his quad?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Matt: Took a bit of a beating but no report of an injury...yet.
Keith (Alberta, Canada)
Thoughts on Vick and his injury risk after game 1? Trying to decide whether to enjoy the ride or sell high while I can. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Keith: Why not enjoy the ride? Just know that based on what we saw last night there is legitimate concern about him taking some shots that could hurt him. But there's always a QB available to pick up or trade for if someone has two.
Do you think Julius Thomas is the real deal? Would you drop Cameron for him?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Steve: Yes. And, yes.
Any ideas when Mets will shutdown Wheeler due to innings cap?
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Shaun: He has probably no more than 25 innings left.
Should I still have faith in Maurice Jones-Drew? The whole Jags offense worries me.
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Pat: I would. Remember he led the league in rushing with not much different talent around him. It's only been a week. Chad Henne starting this week. Wait and see.
Are CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson going to be splitting carries the rest of the season? Was that a one game abberation, or is CJ Spiller overrated fantasy wise?
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
James: First, my bias. I never thought Jackson was as done as everyone else seems to think. Seemed to me that a drastic increase in workload would put Spiller at risk. A balance between the two seems like it would serve the team best. So, I don't really know why that game ended up with that division of work, unless the Patriots were specifically focused on taking Spiller out of the game plan. I think the shift will be towards leaning on Spiller and I expect him to be way more productive going forward but I am perhaps alone on an island worried about how long he can keep that type of workload up.
Tony Romo going to be good to go this week?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Ryan: Expected to be. The fact he put in an entire second half post-injury, not to mention his ability to play through rib injuries in the past, makes it likely.
Tom (Dearborn Hts, MI)
If Amendola is out, do you think K.Thompkins will get more balls his way?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Tom: Seems like they may have to lean on him more. Potentially no Sudfeld, no Amendola and definitely no Vereen. Edelman should definitely get a bump too.
Jen (San Jose)
Is Hartline a good pick up? Or was week one a one hit wonder?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Jen: Good pickup, yes. He's a favorite target for Tannehill.
Do you think Justin Blackmon will be ok in that terrible Jags offense? I play in a PPR and also have Amendola (ugh), Austin & Garcon...all injury risk receivers...
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Jeff: Henne may help. will be interesting to see what he does this week to get a clue. Blackmon obviously still out for a few weeks.
Who would be a higher priority pick up for you right now if both TE and WR were positions of need? Julius Thomas or Edelman?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Steve: Thomas. More upside at his position.
BASEBALL PLAYOFFS! Hey Stephania, do you think there is ANY reason to continue holding onto Carlos Gonzalez? Seems like he's completely done but the Rockies haven't put a fork in him yet so I'm reluctant to...help please.
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
TJ: No. It's looking less and less likely that he'll be able to return. And if he does, you will wonder every day if he can stay in the lineup. Still no BP because of the finger, so I'd seek help elsewhere.
Will D. Richardson keep getting the majority of carries when Pead is back?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
John: It was a legitimate question before the season started. Pead has talent, didn't perform spectacularly in preseason. Not clear whether he's even playing this weekend. Richardson has it well in hand right now.
Jeff (Portland, ME)
JASON CASTRO!? Grab Ramos, Gattis, Y.Gomes to replace? M.Wieters was also just dropped.
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
Jeff: Castro could be a liability in that the knee is not going to be 100 percent until the season ends. May get days off intermittently, esp if knee acts up. Ramos has been hitting well lately.
So with the current injuries who would you rather have: White/Douglas or Eldman/Amendola?
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
Chris: White/Douglas and it's not close.
Ryan F. (Tulsa, OK) [via mobile]
Heard anything new on Ryan Broyles? I don't want to drop him but don't know if I can hold him for weeks if he's not gonna play.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Ryan: No. But this is to be expected given that he's coming off ACL surgery. He should be on bench for the upside he'll bring once he warms up. But you may not get much for the first few weeks.
Chances Gronk plays in Week 3?
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Grant: Hard to read right now. ALl depends what he does between now and then. He's close. I've always thought he'd be ready around Week 4 IF they carried him on the active roster with the possibility that could go +/- 1 week depending on how he progressed in practice. So week 3 definitely possible but it's all predicated on how he does every day with an increased workload...which is why it's hard to answer right this minute.
I have the broncos defense, but should i be concerned about champ bailey's injury?
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
Jeremy: If by concerned you mean will this be an ongoing problem, then yes, the likelihood that this will completely disappear is small. But can he come out and be effective? Yes. And the team hopes to have him in Week 2. He's definitely not the same player he was in the early days of his career but he's a veteran leader who can still make plays so they definitely want him on the field.
Do you think Ahmad Bradshaw is still ailing from his injury or not playing more due to his lack of experience with the Indy playbook/ loss of Preseason reps. Your thoughts on him going forward?
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Perry: It's a matter of working him up to the workload of a starting back. I like him a lot on this team once he gets going, hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Sorry everyone, it's that time. I need to run. Thanks so much for coming to the chat! I'll be back on Friday. During football season, will be adding Fridays at 11:45 a.m. Hope to see you then!!
