Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Hello everyone - thanks for coming to the chat. Thank goodness there were fewer injuries to report coming out of Week 3. What's on your mind?
Scott (Really Really Bad Towel land)
So it appears as the Le'Veon Bell may play on Sunday. Other than a few PPR points Arian Foster has struggled. Am I crazy to put Bell in? I missed pre-season completely. Is he a talented back when healthy?
Stephania Bell (3:07 PM)
Scott: I think it would be crazy to put Bell in over Foster. Bell is expected to play but he is coming off a huge foot injury and will likely be eased back into his forst game. Imagine they use multiple backs.
SPILLER ?? Any concerns?
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Mike: Sure. I was a little worried about him before the season started. Thought he might be vulnerable with increased exposure (increased carries). Sounds like he injured his distal quad (near his knee) which may affect his ability to run hard by the weekend. He thinks he might play but would like to see what he does in practice...
Francisco (New Mexico)
Senorita bella, do you think Ray Rice will play this week? Gracias!
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Francisco: I think there's a strong chance that he does play. Will he be 100%? Probably not - but if he pratices well by late in the week I'm still starting him.
Miles Austin has a hammy issue again. Boys say it's minor. Is there such a thing as a "minor" hamstring injury? Do you think he suits up on Sunday?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Anthony: Sounds like they're hopeful. Can't count on it yet but they would like to have him.. Think if he even gets a whisper of a sensation in his hamstring the caution flags come out. Yes, there is such a thing as minor. But even minor is major when you have a chronic hamstring problem.
Johnny B (Peru)
Hi Stephania! Assuming Gronk comes back this week or next, is he 100% at that point or will they be letting him go as long as he's ok?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Johnny B: Not positive that he's back this week but this is the first week I've thought he would have a legitimate chance. I don't think they're putting him out there if they believe he's anything less than 100% ready. I know they are gaining confidence in where he is on the recovery trajectory and once he's out there, they don't hold back. May not mean playing every snap but certainly no one is going to play cautiously.
Any word on Andre Johnson or V-Jax injury situations? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Matt: First, I love Islamorada. Spent a lot of time there while in grad school at Miami. Lucky you.Second, Johnson day-to-day but MRI all came back negative so really a question of function. I expect he goes. Jackson has a rib injury - no details on which rib(s) but Schefter citing source says "not serious." This comes down to function as well. Probably won't do much in early week practice and we may not know until very late in week.
What about Larry Fitzgerald? He continues his streak of games played. Should I stop worrying?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Jared: Don't know that he's feeling like the hamstring issue is completely behind him but it's better than it was last week. I think it's OK to be a little concerned about aggravation but I am not worried about his status (as long as no setback midweek).
Steven Jackson is not out until after his bye week. Were there any setbacks? Or is ATL playing it safe with him?
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Justin: Think that when Smith came out and said it was a 2-3 week injury, that was their first impression. So this isn't news. It's just that now as we look at the timeline, with a bye, it sounds a lot worse. They never indicated severity but sure sounds like a Grade 2. And that makes a handful of weeks reasonable.
Michael (Glenview, IL)
Crazy to play Fred Jackson over Spiller in PPR, injury concerns make me even more worried...
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Michael: nope. Not crazy. Especially this week.
Know it is early, but any word on Pryor? Have him and Dalton and Pryor has a great match up if he can play.
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Jeff: No way to tell. Players have to go through a series progression and he just suffered the injury last night. Keep in mind he has one less recovery day with the injury happening on a Monday night. I would make other plans in the interim, can always change if the news turns positive.
Reginald Bush said he is 100% for this Sunday, but his coach didn't seem too confident. Your thoughts?
How is D-Rich's foot progressing?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Erick: I just like that you called him Reginals. This will probably be the way it sounds this week. Bush is going to want to play, Schwartz will leave it open and we probably won't have much of a clue until late in the week. My impression, given that he ran pretty well Friday, is that he will play.
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Nate: According to him, he's not at all worried about playing Thursday. Tuesday is the telltale day for Thurs night games so after today's practice we should get a better idea. I'm guessing he'll show up as limited but that he will play.
Bruce (Las Vegas)
What's up with Burleson, done for the year?? Should I add Broyles and just sit him on my bench so nobody else can get him?
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Bruce: I'd add Broyles. Burleson not done for the season as of now. Team says no IR and they expect him back, but it will be a couple of months. Broyles is just increasing his work post-ACL surgery but expect he willl continue to increase with Burleson shelved for a while.
How early do you think P. Harvin or M. Crabtree come back?
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Tiff: Think Harvin has teased us with the Week 7 thing. Don't think he's back Week 7 but think it could be sooner than the earlier hint of 4 mos post-op. Sometime late October? As far as Crabtree, 49ers haven't offered any hints but it always seemed like late November, early December was the soonest we'd see him.
Will Vernon Davis be playing this week?
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Stan: Uncertain. He was limited in practice today. He wanted to try to go Sunday but clearly wasn't ready. He will have to continue to improve over next few days. May be another gametime call.
Thoughts on Ivory? Powell is avail in my league and Ivory has a history of coming back slow from injuries.
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Matt: I'd grab Powell. Sounds like they're not expecting Ivory anytime soon.
Are you worried about Wallace's groin injury? He has seemed to get off to a slow start this season.
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Martin: Not especially. The slow start wasn't really attributed to the groin (you may recall he called out his QB, expressed frustration for not being more involved, which seemed to help in Week 2). That said, the groin could crop up again later on (it was originally a problem in the preseason) but it's not high on the worry meter.
I own Manny Machado in a keeper league :( Any news yet? What's the long-term prognosis?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Andrew: No news yet. Could be any number of things...
Do you feel that any of H.Nicks' lingering injuries contributed to his catchless day?
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Hammer: No. Think Eli didn't have time to throw to anyone, much less a downfield guy.
Do you think Amendola could play by week 5? Sources say he is progressing well
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Chad: Possible, but not likely. Don't think he's that close.
James (Long Island)
Hey Steph!! On the Podcast today you were about to mention Roddy White's status but Berry cut you off! What news from the front on him? (i'm playing vs him this week) Thanks for your help!
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
James: You noticed! I was going to say that as far as I know he didn't take a step backwards. Have someone checking on how he's feeling with regards to the ankle and should have a better update Thursday. Feels like he's approaching the time where I expect it to feel better.
How is Dez Bryant? did the foot and back come out of Sundays game ok?
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Mike: He's fine. Says he'll continue to get treatment for his back but he's fine and is playing through.
beach bum (PA)
Just like everyone one need RB helpPicked up Starks when Lacy got hurt Thoughts on both please after bye Lacy be back?
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Beach: Starks had an MRI Monday(we don't yet know results. Also said he probably wouldn't be able to play this week if the Packers had a game. So there's that. Big unknown for a guy who's had so many injury issues in his short career. Lacy is expected to return after the bye.
What about MJD? Does the injury hamper him this week?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Jared: Think with what he was able to do last week when he came in at questionable, we should feel good about him for this week.
Are Mendenhall's toe and hamstring issues the beginning of his decline? Or will he push through for a relevant fantasy season?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Jose: Obviously the Cardinals want him out there. He really hasn't been healthy for an extended period since the ACL. It's always something. He does impress with his willingness to play through things to the extent possible. But it makes it hard to have confidence that he'll last the whole season.
Not a Ray Rice owner, but I do own Pierce and a struggling Ridley. What are your thoughts on Rice coming off a hip injury? Does he play? If so, what kind of work load do you expect? Pierce worth a fill in regardless?
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Jason: if Rice plays, expect him to get decent work but I could envision a 50-50 split or thereabouts. I really want to see how Rice looks at the end of the week before making that call. If he's limited all week, then I like Pierce. Pierce could still be a decent flex even if Rice looks good at the end of the week, but there's too much that can happen between now and the end of the week to make that call.
the week to week injuries get lots of attention (rightfully so) but what about guys who you might be able to stash for some value later. Andre Brown? Vereen?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Reed: Totally hear you. The challenge is that we don't get much info on guys who will be out for those extended periods as long as they're just doing rehab. When they get closer to returning to practice, then we get updates. Until then, they're hidden from view. So while I imagine they're making progress from their respective injuries in a rehab sense, there's no really solid info to report related to when they approach a return.
Jay (Parts unknown)
Not injury related but I would love your input. Would you trade CJ Spiller for Jimmy Graham in a PPR keeper league?
Stephania Bell (3:49 PM)
Jay: To get Graham? Yes. I don't even hesitate. Probably should know who else you have at RB. But the PPR and the keeper make me want Graham.
Doug (New York)
What's up with Mark Ingram? I want to roster and play Frenchie the PT Cruiser (Pierre Thomas) in my PPR league.
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
Doug: Toe injury and didn't practice at all last week. Obviously practice reports for this week don't start until Tuesday but you'd have to think he's just working his way back (presuming he can get out there). Thomas probably still has more opportunities this week.
Is Matthew planning an audio version of his book? Are you going to be reading a chapter?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Bill: That's funny. But I should ask. Maybe a chapter each from Nate, Pod and I...
you're making me nervous, Steph, i thought Gronk was supposed to be a stone cold lock to play this week :(
Stephania Bell (3:54 PM)
Ben: Where did you hear that? I haven't heard anyone say he's a lock. I can tell you this with certainty. No one on Pats is a lock. And while the sentiment in NE is that Gronk is doing remarkably well, there are still some things he needs to do in practice to turn that final corner. I think he has a good chance; I'll turn the dial up or down depending what he does as week progresses.
Seems like we mentioned every Q WR aside for Mike Williams. Any update?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Nate: Just that he has a leg issue (they are not revealing anything more until they have to apparently) but he did play through it Sunday so must not be severe. Think the offense in general was as much to blame as anything for his production Sunday.
What's this about Lamar Miller wearing a shoulder harness?
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
Brian: Seen wearing one. And that's all we know. There was no post-game injury report that I'm aware of so not sure what this is. Obviously we'll be looking for his presence on first injury report tomorrow.
Does the news about CarGo possibly playing this week carry any weight for championship week?
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Mike: It's a gamble. No indication yet whether he will or won't play. Apparently a little relief from a cortisone shot. But remains to be seen whether he can really swing a bat.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
And on that note, it's time for me to run. Best of luck this week. We'll chat again on Friday!
