Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Happy Tuesday everyone and welcome to the chat. Crazy week with three games coming up on Thursday. Folks are in the playoff hunt. What's on your mind?
Hi my long distance friend. Should I have major concerns about Zac Stacy going forward? Is he subject to recurring concussion problems now that he just had one?
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Hi Sven: Right back at you. There is some evidence that having a concussion can make you more susceptible to another but there are a number of variables involved. The most important thing we have learned about this injury is that it is important to completely recover from it (to the best of our ability to measure that) prior to returning to competition. Stacy will be put through the protocol-based tests this week before they determine his status for Sunday.
Mike James (Hawaii)
Ms.Bell... I hear Rodgers was at practice today, do you think he play against the Lions? if not.. then who should I start in his place.. M.Flynn, Glennon or Weeden.. please please help..
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Hi Mike: He was throwing but Flynn took the bulk of the snaps and appears likely to get the start. I have been really happy with Glennon as my fantasy QB the last few weeks, consistently putting up double digit points even against Seattle D. I know he faces Carolina this week but still think he will be ok, maybe not as strong a play as other weeks. Flynn has a better matchup Thurs vs Detroit. We just haven't seen much of him.
Derek (At Work)
Hi Stephania, happy early Thanksgiving! Any word on Moreno and his status for this weekend and going forward? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Hi Derek: Same to you! Moreno has a bone bruise in his ankle and all del Rio is saying at this point is that he is day-to-day. Don't think we really have any idea as to what his status will be and it may come to gametime or at least very late in the week. WIth there being so many Thursday games, if that's where your backups are, I'd probably play them. Otherwise wait to see what Friday practice yields. He was limping pretty badly late Sunday night, hard to imagine he's that much better by Friday.
Any concerns with Matt Forte's knee? Sounded like he hyper-extended it. With the short week, I am concerned.
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Jeff: He did. But according to Trestman, it's slight and he sounded optimistic about his availability. Not a short week for the Bears so he gets the full 7 days (but short if you need to find a replacement). Also, he came back in the game last week. Always a good sign.
Is Percy Harvin finally 100% coming out of the bye this week?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Matt: Well, yes in the sense that the Seahawks have said they won't hold him back as far as snaos, etc. But what we don't know is what their scheduled plan for utilizing him would be...and how they'll integrate him into the offense. Have to imagine he's worth playing given the upside. He certainly looked very good in his limited appearance debut.
Darren McFadden. Startable right away against a terrible Dallas D? He practiced don't-cha-know
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Randy: I do know, I do. But that doesn't make me trust him and his hamstring much. Look, if he practices again tomorrow I expect he plays. But it's not like Rashad Jennings is just going to be shelved. I could see them using them both but maybe even giving the heavier workload to Jennings. Wouldn't you?
Stephania, let's switch over to basketball for a minute to discuss Rose's knee. He had medial meniscus surgery Monday and is out for the year. Does this surprise you? It somewhat is surprising to me since this sounds more like a 3-4 month injury and he could salvage some season. Is there more than the organization is letting on regarding Rose's knee like a ligament repair they're not talking about? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Eric: I actually taped a video on this for ESPN Chicago which should post shortly. I don't think there's anything really being hidden here. I just think they are making the ultra-conservative call, maybe to keep the when-will-he-be-back questions away. It does seem like it would make sense to leave the door open. Not sure I completely understand why they're not but there are, I'm sure, many conversations going on behind the scenes which led to that decision. Will be three seasons where he's played in very few games (I think about 50 total). Makes it hard to project a future.
What is the deal with Chris Ivory's ankle? Worth picking up Bilal Powell on the waiver wire if in need of an RB2?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Nick: I would pick him up because if what Ivory said is true - that he has BOTH a high and lateral ankle sprain - it's hard to imagine him playing. Easier to judge once practices get underway but I would make the plans for his absence.
Any chance Denarius Moore suits up this week?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Thom: It's not looking good. He didn't practice today and they play THursday.
Any word on Spiller's ankle? Is it even worth rostering him?
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
Chris: It's hard to know how much it's bothering him. He's not 100 percent and the team is not confident in him, hence Jackson getting more snaps. If he shows more, I think they'll turn to him more but that could take another couple weeks. He's always a threat to bust one big move but it's hard to plan on him for consistency.
Since cold weather seems to be a trigger for Eddie Lacy's asthma, should we be concerned about his upcoming outdoor games during the fantasy playoffs?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Scott: Legitimate question. Bummer to have Green Bay as your home when the winter weather is an issue. Luckily next game is a dome. But I don't think it's enough to make me bench him. He still managed to do plenty of damage in the last game.
Mike (Pa )
Safe to drop Delanie Walker as a Jordan Reed owner, or should I hang on?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Mike: I'd hold onto him anyway. No word on Reed for this week with Washington just having played Monday night. But with the problems Washington is having offensively and Walker being a big target in TN, I would keep him as an option regardless.
Hi Steph! Any thoughts on Julius Thomas and that ankle? JDR has said he will play this week vs KC, but is he an auto start still or will that ankle hold him up? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Chris: SOunds like the Broncos think Thomas will be able to play this week but I want to see how he's moving in practice. The fact they left it open for him to possibly play last Sunday night makes me more optimsitic about this week. Still, I'm eager to hear how he actually looks moving in practice...and I think it's the knee bothering him more than the ankle at this point.
On the 06010 today Berry said you traded away Gore... It worked out nicely this week. Injury concerns, or were you just trying to improve your team?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
BK: I was just trying to improve my team. Have not heard a specific injury concern. Think their passing game was effective and they can limit his exposure in some games to help protect him late in the season.
As a Chiefs DST owner, how worried should I be about the injuries to Tamba Hali and Justin Houston?
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Brandon: Houston will be out this week. Big loss for the KC pass rush. Hali has what the team is calling a minor ankle sprain so it looks like his chances are better.
Worried about Tony Gonzales's Toe? Or more worried about him getting old and Atlanta being.. well.. awful.
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Matt: Not worried about Gonzalez purely on age. He's in better shape arguably than most. The toe is a problem but it's more that there has been a focus on covering him and Ryan getting rushed, offense out of sync. He was in position in the red zone this week to score a TD if Ryan had found him. So I guess the answer is I worry most about Atlanta's voerall performance.
Any Burleson injury concerns for Thurs? I want to watch him play for my time while eating turkey!
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Todd: No real concerns. Pretty solid first outing since his surgery. Expect they'll continue to look to him.
I saw Crabtree will be activated today. Do you think he can make an immediate impact for fantasy playoffs week 14-16?
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Marvin: As much as I'd like to see him have an immediate impact for my Niners, I would hesitate to count on it. Really tough injury to come back from and I'm sure they want to ease him back. If you have room to stash, fine. I don't think he appears until Week 14 at soonest and then probably for a very specific amount of plays. If he looks good in debut, I might have him as a flex option the following games but I wouldn't expect a ton.
Wondering about Ben Tate? Will he continue to struggle, or do you think he might get back on track fairly soon?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Tom: I didn't see any of this game yet so I'm not sure how he looked but it sounds like he was ineffective (and whether that can all be attributed to him is also a question). He's the starter for this week so they're not going away from him. Know he's banged up but would expect him to be more effective than what we saw this week. I think what we saw with this move last week though is that they won't hesitate to go to Johnson if they need to.
Any updates/news on Ryan Mathews and how serious the re-aggravation was? What is your opinion on whether he plays this weekend an if he does if his performance is hampered?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Jesse: No word on severity but this serves to remind us that it's so easy to suffer these types of setbacks. No hint as to his availability this week. When the hamstring was first labeled an issue for him this year, he performed pretty well in his first outing and even since then, until now. Always concerned first game back, esp if he's held out of practices. To that end, we have to wait and see what he does.
"There is some evidence that having a concussion can make you more susceptible to another but there are a number of variables involved." Are you saying that you don't think this is true because as a ceritifed athletic trainer, I have found this to be correct.
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Jon: Not saying anything of the sort. But it's a longer discussion. Very important to distinguish between a second concussion vs a player returning too soon and suffering a second injury as a RESULT of not being truly over the first one. There are also certain variables which are now being shown to be more predictive of longer-recovery and there are a number of subtleties when it comes to accurately identifying/recognizing/managing these. When all concussions get lumped under one header, it gets murky.
BASEBALL: Think Manny Machado is the Orioles's 3B in Spring Traning? On Opening Day?
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Ben: Not sure he'll be ready by Opening Day but the hope is that it won't be long afterward. The most important thing is that he doesn't push it and return too soon. This is about the health of his knee going forward for the rest of his career and the team seems to appreciate that. Even if he doesn't return until May, he should be in very good shape when he does come back.
Pablo (Santa Fe)
NFL vs. NHL Concussions- can you tell me why NFL players typically come back from them much more quickly than NHL players? Severity, equipment or speed of game play a role? It seems like an NHL player is always out months, not days/week when they get concussed. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Pablo: It's tough to generalize across the sports and I don't know that we have scientific data to draw an accurate comparison. That said, it's tough to compare head injuries anyway since they are highly variable not only between athletes but within the same athlete. At the very least, they are recognizing and managing this injury better in the NHL as well, which ultimately means not bringing a player back before he is ready.
Stephania! I need your expert advice that has worked so well all year for me (2nd place, highest points in my PPR League). 1. Would you pick up Rod Streater (and drop Colston?) because of Rod's chemistry with McGloin? 2. Any chance Pryor is healthy enough to start over McGloin? and 3. How is Streater's hip? Happy Early Thanksgiving!
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
Perry: Thank you. Congrats on your team's success. McGloin will start and it makes sense given the short week for the Raiders. And in that case I would pick up Streater. Colston always has potential and with Seattle D being challenged with some issues this week, that Monday night game could open up for the Saints. Colston could suddenly put up numbers but Brees has a zillion options. McGloin has clearly found something with Streater. And as far as his ship, he did come back into the game so not overly concerned.
Stephania Bell (4:04 PM)
Time to dash folks. Thanks so much for joining me today. Happy Thanksgiving! We won't be having chats Friday because of the holiday so good luck in Week 13! See you back here next week.
