Chad Ford (1:01 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. NBA first half, NBA Draft in second. Let's roll
Would you say that the Raptors have made it clear that they intend to get a high draft pick this summer?
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
I think we saw this one coming. Masai Ujiri is not a big fan of the team Bryan Colangelo put together. But he's a big fan of the draft and I think he saw an opportunity. Sounds like Kyle Lowry might be the next one out the door. DeMar DeRozan could also be gone. Cap space and draft picks is the strategy. Welcome to the tanking ring, Raptors! Andrew Wiggins would look great in a Raptors uni
Who do you think won in the Raptors/Kings trade?
Chad Ford (1:08 PM)
Raptors. They are going to be in a very good position to get a transcendent player in the draft. The Kings? They were in that position. Rudy Gay's just good enough to knock them out of the running for a top pick, but not good enough to put them in the playoffs in the West. That's a lot of money to move from bad to sort of bad.
Bulls can't beat the Jazz, Bucks, Pistons but they can beat Miami by 20. I seriously think they should just start trading everybody but Rose (obviously) and Taj. Making the playoffs would be the worst thing they could do this year.
Chad Ford (1:10 PM)
Probably right. But they're going to have to fire their head coach if that's what management wants to do. No way Tom Thibdeau will want to do that.
Do you think the Knicks needs to fired the coach?
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
No. But that's probably the next shoe to drop. They need to fire the owner. But that's not going to happen.

What deals looking worst, the Knx givin up a potential top pick in this yrs draft for Melo or Nets givin up 3 potential lotto picks for the Boston Crew? Both are abysmal
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
Nets deal much worse. Melo was a star that they desperately needed and has helped the team in the past. The Boston Crew looks like a flop from day one. Other than re-signing Deron Williams, there hasn't really been one deal I've really loved that Billy King has done. Even the Boston deal (which I though would put them at a fourth or fifth seed in the playoffs) was never going to get them a title. Can't imagine RC Buford making all the bumbles King has made as a GM.
Do you think there's any truth to the rumors that the Bucks could be interested in Asik?
Chad Ford (1:15 PM)
Hope that's not true. They need to be as bad as humanly possible. It's the only way they're guaranteed to get a true star in Milwaukee. And if they could just land one elite player in the draft, I'd actually like this team a bit. They have some nice young pieces. They just don't have that go to guy.
Heard of possible trade: Asik for Milsap. Which team does that/doesn't that make sense for?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
That might be a nice deal for both teams. Al Horford isn't a fan of playing the five. Milsap would give the Rockets that veteran four they covet. Milsap's contract is much better -- if I was the Hawks I might try to steal Terrence Jones as part of that deal.
What could the Bucks get for Larry Sanders if they were to trade him right now? Would anyone even trade for him right now?
Chad Ford (1:19 PM)
Would be pennies on the dollar. Don't think they can trade him right. Think Ersan Ilyasova is the trade bait.
The injury bug is running rampant in memphis. Should they just tank the season?
Chad Ford (1:23 PM)
Going to be tempting. West is so strong, I could see the Grizzlies falling too far behind. One of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of the current lottery rules. Incentivizes teams to tank for one year when an injury comes. Think the NBA should average a team's losses over three years and use that as the way to calculate who has the first pick. Much harder to commit to tanking/rebuilding for three plus years.
Christian (Arlington, VA)
Does the NBA Commissioners Office think "tanking" is a problem or a way to draw interest to bad teams when normally no one would talk about them?
Chad Ford (1:24 PM)
Most of the bad teams in the NBA aren't actually tanking. The Bucks, for example, weren't trying to be bad. Just decimated by injuries. Cavs were trying to make the playoffs too, they're just not very good. To me it's the management of the Sixers, Jazz, Raptors and Magic that are really trying deliberately to be bad. The rest of the teams are more bad by accident. Not sure which is worse.
Seeing as theyre now contending for a playoff spot, what do you see the phoenix suns draft strategy being next year?
Chad Ford (1:27 PM)
Continue to baffled by the Suns. I thought they'd be the worst team in the league. Thought they were set up to fail and land a high draft pick. I still doubt they end up as a playoff team in the West, but it's also pretty unlikely that they'll be in the running for the No. 1 pick. The good news is that this draft is unusually deep and getting a player in the 8 to 15 range would be like getting a player 1-5 in last year's draft.
What do you think of Kobe 2 games into his return?
Chad Ford (1:29 PM)
I'm impressed that he's back at all this early. It's a testament to how driven he is. He's almost super human that way. Basketball wise he has a long ways to go, but that doesn't stop me from being wowed that he's back at all.
If I were an NBA GM I'd be really nervous about the number one pick. Sure, you get first choice, but with so many great players it's tough to project who will be THE best. Do GMs have this sort of feeling or are they confident they are the best talent evaluator?
Chad Ford (1:30 PM)
Most of the GMs in the league are pretty risk adverse, so yes, there is a certain anxiety that goes along with the No. 1 pick. You HAVE to get it right. It's why Chris Grant is sweating bullets in Cleveland right now. Still, if you are a GM, you want to control the draft. I think it's silly when they wring their hands about it. Having the No. 1 pick is the best possible position to be.
Hi Chad,Hypothetical question for ya: Where would Anthony Davis be drafted if he were a part of this year's stacked draft class?THANK!!
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Probably No. 1. If he can stay healthy, he's a future Top 5 player in the NBA. And a big man. I don't think Julius Randle nor Joel Embiid are better prospects than Davis was.
Which players, with what we now have seen, from the 2013 draft would crack the top 10 in the 2014 draft? MCW, Oladipo, Noel?
Chad Ford (1:32 PM)
Oladipo might be the only one.
Ken. A (Kissimmee)
Who is Zach Lavine ? Is he lottery worthy ?
Chad Ford (1:33 PM)
Long, athletic combo guard at UCLA. Great athlete. Lights out shooter. Still figuring out the mid-range game. Needs to add strength. Has some point guard skills, though he isn't really used that way at UCLA. Most of the NBA scouts I have talked with who have actually seen him play have him in the lottery. I think he's going to end up being a Top 10 pick.
Who do you think will be the better NBA PG between Exum and Smart?
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
So tough. So different. Smart is all about power, defense and motor. Exum all about athleticism and skill. Neither player a pure point guard. Think both will be super successful at the next level.
Which players from Kentucky need to stay another year and which ones should enter the draft?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
Julius Randle is gone. Probably James Young and Willie Cauley-Stein. Those are the only three, right now, really making a strong case as a potential lottery pick. Andrew Harrison is probably fourth on the list.
Can andrew wiggins be better than paul george down the road?
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
If it's even a wash, then Wiggins should be the No. 1 pick the draft. George is that good and I see a lot of Paul George in Wiggins.
Adam (Washington, DC)
Do you think Alex Poythress made the right decision not coming out in this past year's weak draft and with all the talent at UK in front of him right now?
Chad Ford (1:37 PM)
Right now, it doesn't look like it. Thought at the start of the season, he may have made the right call. He was not ready at all for the NBA. But he hasn't been helping himself this year.
I've read a couple of comments from Jabari about Okafor coming to Duke next year and "one and done's" in general. I'm beginning to wonder if Duke doesn't win it all this year if Parker might come back next year and try to win a championship. Thoughts?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
He's the type of young man, like Marcus Smart, who would consider it. Their priorities are more than just a quick paycheck in the NBA. Still, I'm not sure how another year would help Jabari. For Smart, he had specific areas he needed to work on. I think Parker's a little bit under challenged in the NCAA. He's already a pro.
Does Embiid actually have a shot of going #1 over more proven guys in this draft?
Chad Ford (1:42 PM)
Yes. Because, size matters and there are very few real seven footers who can play in the NBA. Also because Embiid isn't just a seven footer. He's athletic, nimble and skilled. While he has a long ways to go to reach his potential, I don't think scouts are exaggerating when they say that Embiid has some Hakeem Olajuwon in his game. If he's Hakeem? He should be the No. 1 pick!
There is always a lot of talk about being drafted by the RIGHT team in the NBA. Fit always seems to be huge. Best NBA fits for the Wiggins? Jabari? Randle? Smart? Embiid?
Chad Ford (1:45 PM)
Wiggins? RaptorsJabari? JazzRandle? 76ersSmart? MagicEmbiid? CavsExum? Bucks
Jay (Philly )
Am I crazy for thinking that Exum could be the best player in this draft?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
You're not alone. But the fact that he's not playing right now is going to hurt his stock a little. Riskier to be taken over Jabari, Wiggins or Randle. But as far as talent goes, he's right with all of them.
Any chance Aaron Gordon stays one more year? It's not just wishful thinking, the guy clearly can improve while in college (ala Blake Griffin) AND be in a not-so-deep class next year.
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
Actually yes. I think he's sitting there with six guys ahead of him that he's unlikely to pass. Should be able to improve his draft stock and his game with another year at Arizona.
Who's the top pass-first PG prospect in the 2014 class?
Chad Ford (1:51 PM)
Jerian Grant of Notre Dame?
Do you see "NBA player" in Nick Johnson?
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
Yes. But think the Oladipo comps are going too far.
What are your thoughts on Wayne Selden? If the draft was tomorrow where would he go?
Chad Ford (1:54 PM)
He's been OK, but hasn't lived up to the hype he had coming into the season from some scouts who watched KU practices. I think he's struggling to take a backseat role as a scorer. As a pro prospect, wish he was a few inches taller.
Who is the best scorer in the draft?
Chad Ford (1:54 PM)
Jabari Parker. He's going to average 20+ ppg for his entire career.
Scott (Rochester, NY)
Outside of the top 6-7 players in this year's draft, who are some sleeper SF to look out for?
Chad Ford (1:55 PM)
Kentucky's James Young has a lot of fans. So does Florida's Chris Walker and Syracuse's Jerami Grant.
Jake S. (Ohio)
Which high lottery player in the 2014 draft has the biggest "potential" to be a bust?
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
Probably Exum. We know the least about him ...
Why aren't more GM's hyped over Kyle Anderson at UCLA. That kid is so versatile!
Chad Ford (1:59 PM)
Hard for them to peg a 6-9 point power forward with zero athletic ability. But you're right, he's crazy talented.
Chad Ford (1:59 PM)
Gotta run everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat this week. We will do it again next week!
