Pierre LeBrun (2:00 PM)
Greetings folks, hope everyone is well. Thanks for joining me again this week.A reminder that the NHL's holiday trade freeze goes into effect tonight at midnight.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What did you think of the Rangers re-signing their Goalie Henry Lundquist to a 7-year Deal?
Pierre LeBrun (2:02 PM)
It was a lot of money and term but they had no choice, if Henrik goes on the market next summer he gets $9 M a year for 7 years easy.... It was a must signing for the Blueshirts
am rockin to Triumph's 'Lay It On The Line' right now...you have any tunes going?
Pierre LeBrun (2:04 PM)
I've got my ITunes going, mixed tunes, right now I've got some Neil Young rocking
Any word on when Rogers will make a decision on how HNIC will look in the new year i.e. on air personalities/analysts/change of broadcast focus etc?
Pierre LeBrun (2:04 PM)
Bill, not for me to say or know, I'm a proud TSN/ESPN boy.
What percentange do you give Steven Stamkos putting on the sweater of the Bolts on Feb 6th like all the reports say? I still say less then 50%, I assume if he does he will be going to Sochi correct?
Pierre LeBrun (2:05 PM)
Totally guessing but knowing him? I'd say 60 percent
I've heard the same argument for the Steen deal given that you gave for the Lundqvist deal in that "someone else would have given it to them"...but the Devils didn't give Clarkson his money just because "someone else would" and that's worked out pretty well for them. I understand Lundqvist is the Rangers, but do the Blues really think they'll get three more years of Steen like this and they had to pay him simply because "someone else would have given him the money"? Or would it be better to let someone else overpay him?
Pierre LeBrun (2:07 PM)
Steen at $5.8 M is a bargain. You have to understand something, with the salary cap going north of $80 million in the next few years, top players are going to start earning $10 M plus a year... you have to adjust yourself with the salaries you're about to see over the next few years, it's going to be whacky
Henry (US but so close to Canada)
Iginla's salary is less than $2M this year but he has bonuses bringing total to almost $7M that are deferred cap-wise until next year, when the maximum is projected to jump as expected. Do some organizations just have a better grasp on loopholes, ways to fully use the the system that is leading to their success more than others?
Pierre LeBrun (2:08 PM)
I will say this, Peter Chiarelli is an amazing GM, has gone a fantastic job keeping the core together in Boston after a Cup win in 2011 and his name routinely is brought up to me by his rival GMs as a guy they really respect for how he's handled his roster/cap
When Adam Oates and George McPhee call Wilson's hit on Schenn "a good clean hit," doesn't that really take away from what the NHL is trying to do with player safety?
Pierre LeBrun (2:10 PM)
I actually struggle with this one, and I bet you Shanahan doesn't come down as hard on Wilson as people think. I keep looking at the hit and I see a player in Schenn that's turning at the last moment which made the hit worst. Just my opinion
Ed (Queens Village)
Why is there a freeze of trades during this time of year?
Pierre LeBrun (2:11 PM)
so players and their families don't have to deal with a trade during cherished family time
Michael Del Zotto (New York City)
Pierre, how did you like that windshield wiper I gave Brandon Sutter last night? That earned me a spot in the chateau bow wow the rest of the game. I want to think that is probably not a great play when I have been a healthy scratch recently...
Pierre LeBrun (2:11 PM)
You are very much still on the trade block. But you're a good player. Change of scenery may help
Statsny has been playing very well for the Avs this year. Do you think they'll try to trade him at the deadline or keep him till the end of the season? If they do hold on to him, do you think they can resign him?
Pierre LeBrun (2:12 PM)
Haven't talked to anyone with the Avs in a while so I have no inside intel but my own opinion is they move him for D help just given how deep they are up front and at center
Miss Manners (Advice Column)
Pierre, the rash of dirty hits and suspensions has reached critical mass. It seems now there are two or three incidents EVERY NIGHT. Then afterwards we hear the same thing, coach says he didn't think the hit was a penalty, player says he is really sorry and didn't intend to injure, players union says they will appeal if punishment too hard, etc. etc. Hey Tom Wilson, you launched your body at a guy 25mph and rammed him face first into the wall....OF COURSE YOU INTENDED TO INJURE HIM! So instead of Adam Oates saying what he said, isn't it time we hear a coach say "You know what, it was a dirty hit. Our player made a mistake and as an organization we are not going to tolerate it. We support the league giving an appropriate suspension and we will advise him NOT to appeal. If he does not adjust his play he will no longer dress for games on our team." And then stick to their word. The Penguins are always mentioned for doing something like that with Cooke, but now we need EVERY team to do that. Same with the players union actually representing victims who are also part of said union.
Pierre LeBrun (2:13 PM)
To your point about Cooke, Shanahan made a point of bringing up his example and how the Penguins helped Cooke when Shanny was addressing owners at the BOG in Pebble Beach last week....
Brooks Orpik (Pittsburgh, PA)
Pierre, I know you refuse to traffic in rumors, but what are your thoughts on the people who are saying part of the reason for the NHL delaying the Thornton ruling was that the Bruins brass were pushing hard for my medical reports...thus apparently insinuating that I am "exaggerating" (i.e., FAKING) my concussion...and lesser injury equals lesser suspension? After all, I was skating a few days later...although the Pens say I am nowhere close to playing. While we're at it, some are also saying James Neal acted dismissively on his phone hearing (just like his post-game comments) and that angered Shanahan and got him to tack on another game. Thoughts?
Pierre LeBrun (2:13 PM)
I don't believe that to be true
Pierre LeBrun (2:18 PM)
Sorry on the phone with a source.Back shortly
Pierre LeBrun (2:26 PM)
Sorry about that, had to take that call.Back now :)
Pierre, please tell me you have some inside info on the Sabres GM search!
Pierre LeBrun (2:27 PM)
I will tell you this: the longer this goes it makes you wonder if Pat LaFontaine doesn't just take the job himself in some form or another. Just a thought.
Trey Fevaa (Gothem City)
Every hockey media outlet is talking about the players "not getting it" when it comes to the controversial hits being thrown around the league night in and night out. What kind of message does it send when the Washington Capitals Coach and GM come out publicly backing Tom Wilson's hit on Schenn as clean? Personally I think it was a clean hit but him charging in is what makes it a dirty play.
Pierre LeBrun (2:29 PM)
agreed on the charging part
Clark W. Griswold (Chicago, IL)
Pierre, what's your favorite holiday movie? And have you ever had any challenges with the family Christmas Tree or exterior illumination?
Pierre LeBrun (2:30 PM)
Not even close, favorite Holiday movie ever: BAD SANTA
Bing Crosby (By the Fireplace)
Pierre, what's your favorite holiday song to hear on the radior? Are you going something traditional like myself or Elvis? Or 80s new wave with the Waitresses or Band-Aid? Hey Bruce Springsteen....we get it...Clarence got a new saxaphone from Santa every year....enough already!
Pierre LeBrun (2:37 PM)
Again, easy one: Do They Know It's Christmas !
In your opinion what should the Penguins do with their defensemen once everyone gets healthy? The younger players are starting to prove they deserve to be in the NHL but you can't have 11 defencemen on the roster. Is it time to say good bye to Orpik to try to get something in return for him since he still has value in a trade?
Pierre LeBrun (2:39 PM)
I would keep them all for this year. You see with all the injuries now on D, you never have enough D. Playoff teams always tell me that, they wish they had more D ! Like pitching in baseball
steve (san diego)
sharks at kings. home team has won 14 STRAIGHT. does it continue tonight?
Pierre LeBrun (2:49 PM)
Sharks 4, Kings 3, shootout
Any truth that the NHL is considering Baltimore for an expansion franchise?
Pierre LeBrun (2:50 PM)
Have never heard that
tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]
What can Santa bring my @?&%?* Jets this Christmas to help them make the playoffs? Merry Christmas to you and yours. Always enjoy the chizzats.
Pierre LeBrun (2:55 PM)
Even Santa can't fix this one, Tdiddy, Jets aren't making the playoffs no matter what Christmas miracle comes their way
Scott (New Mexico)
Looks like Quick is on the verge of coming back. He was back in practice yesterday. This makes my Team USA heart feel that much better. That is all.
Pierre LeBrun (2:56 PM)
Quick will be fine indeed, 1-2 punch with Ryan Miller is as solid as there isAlthough Rask-Lehtonen-Niemi (maybe RInne?) pretty darn good, too !
Ray Shero (Pittsburgh, PA)
After 1.5 seasons, how are we grading the Jordan Staal trade? Right now Staal and Sutter have the exact same stats (7 goals) this year. Plus we also got Dumoulin (who is currently playing for us) and a first round pick....which allowed us to move down and take Olli Maatta with our own pick (now on our top pairing). Not bad, eh?
Pierre LeBrun (2:57 PM)
I'd say I'm a happy person if I were a Pittsburgh Penguins fan
Hockey Gods (Mount Olympus)
Pierre, the Penguins have two losses in their last 13 games even with all their injuries...but both of those losses were against Boston. Bad omen?
Pierre LeBrun (2:58 PM)
Just don't like how Pens match up vs. Bruins.... especially come playoff time... Pens don't have same defensive commitment overall compared to Bruins... Hoping they meet again in East finals though, would be a dandy again
Scrivens and Jones are playing pretty awesome in LA... Does that lower your opinion of Quick even a little? Maybe it's the system?
Pierre LeBrun (2:59 PM)
No question Kings play a great defensive game, one of the best in the league, but I still think over long haul Quick's quality makes a difference over the other 2 guys
Kevin McCallister (Home Alone)
I may not be the best Christmas movie, but I sure am fun to watch (especially if you have a 5 year old)
Pierre LeBrun (2:59 PM)
Pierre LeBrun (3:00 PM)
OK folks, Happy Holiday to all of you! Keep safe. Thanks again for dropping by
