From last week's chat:"Paul (Denver)How many points will the Bears have to score in order to beat the Iggles? mike wilbon (2:44 PM)45...maybe 48."Ever dream you'd STILL be short 6 (actually, 7) points?
mike wilbon (1:50 PM)
HELLO and Happy Holidays!!! Yes, that was quite a stinker the Bears threw up last night. Actually, they threw up all over themselves. Very surprised any team would no-show with as much at stake as the Bears had last night...Wow...Let's see what the Bears are made of, if anything. It's up to Marc Trestman and his staff to pull it together between now and the Packers on Sunday...

Is there a super-cool part of your job that the average person may not be aware of? Y'know, besides the chicks.
mike wilbon (1:53 PM)
Tickets? You think I sit in seats with tickets to do my job? Okay, let's start from the beginning. I'm a sportswriter...or used to be one. We have credentials, a "press pass" they still call it. It gets you in the building, into the "press room" where you set up your laptop presuming you're going to write a story or column...it gets you (usually) into the post-game news conferences and (in my case, having worked for The Washington Post and/or ESPN.com) into the locker room where you talk to players, coaches, trainers, whoever will talk to you, which varies depending on who you are and the relationships you have...(cont'd)
mike wilbon (2:03 PM)
So you don't have a need for tickets. The press pass gets you a seat in one press section or another, stature determining how close your seat is...So when I have tickets, I buy them and I'm taking my son or nephew or both...NEVER to work. Now, the best part of my job is getting access to everything behind the curtain...To games, people, conversations...of of which determine races and seasons and sometimes sports history...and sometimes absolutely nothing. I love the access, much of which I can report to readers/viewers/listeners and much more than I cannot report, but know about because its off-the-record...and a ton of which helps me know what not to say because I know better...Anyway, it's the relationships developed, many of which are with people (trainers, PR people, staffers, team and league executives) you have zero idea even exist...AND, I do love the games...having attended every playoff game of consequence that Michael Jordan ever played AND been standing on the sideline when John Elway engineered "The Drive"...AND toes in the end zone when Steve Young hit T.O. with that pass to beat the Packers in the playoffs...I do indeed love what I do and have done for 34 years...
Jon (Phoenix, AZ)
Have you had the pleasure of watching the DragonBlade slice up NBA defenses this year in Phoenix?
mike wilbon (2:05 PM)
Yeah, I actually have. I'm close to getting hooked on the Suns again, and surprisingly so this season since I thought they'd be the worst team in the NBA Western Conference...It's too early to talk about this in-depth because this is an NFL Monday with great results and stories to talk about...But we'll get back to this in subsequent weeks, if the Suns are still rolling with Plum Dawg! Miles Plumlee (see, I watch)...We'll get back to it...Go Suns...I love the way they're playing...
Luke Johns (Charlestown, MA)
Happy Hollidays Mike. Did the Ravens just have a bad game or has New England really gotten back together?
mike wilbon (2:14 PM)
The Ravens had a terrible week...terrible game...awful. I picked the Patriots to win, but assigned it only a "1" in my confidence pool. I thought it would be a nail-biter. That said, the Patriots have had it together all season. Aren't the Patriots 11-4. Get what back together? I had a Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl from Day 1 and there's no reason to change it now...They'll crush Buffalo Sunday and earn a #2 seed in the AFC and probably get the Broncos and Peyton Manning in the AFC Championship game. I'll take Tom Brady in that game every single time...100 percent of the time...
mike wilbon (2:19 PM)
Bulls. The Wildcats are going to get steadily better under Chris Collins. The Bulls? They're disspirited right now; I can see it in the way they're playing. The just down, no energy...no Nate Robinson or any kind of spark plug. And while I thought it would last two or three weeks it seems it could last longer. They're a bad team right now...I still don't think with everybody except Rose healthy that the Bulls can lose enough to reach the lottery. But they're like 10th now and they just look awful...
I have to agree with Charles Barkley. The NBA stinks. I usually don't get into the league until Christmas day, but I am not going to watch the games this year. The few games I've watched this year have been despicable. Agree?
mike wilbon (2:22 PM)
Not to the same extent, but its been pretty blah so far. The East stinks, and there's no way to say anything but that...It's unwatchable and I DO watch. But the West is great to watch. What, you can't watch the Spurs v Warriors? That game they played the other night did NOT stink. It was great. So, Charles can say whatever he wants about they league and he's ALWAYS got his finger on the pulse...You, Jacob, ought to forget about grand proclimations and watch some games in the Western Conference, including the ones involving the team where you live, Houston. The Rockets are fun to watch. Stop whining! Happy Holidays! LOL
Jerry (Cortland, IL)
mike wilbon (2:22 PM)
That's worth repeating. How do you just not show up like that with all that was at stake?
How bout them Cowboys, Still hating on my boy romo after yesterdays performance 8-)
mike wilbon (2:24 PM)
You're 8-7 with all that talent and you're popping your jersey? Sterotypical Cowboy fan. Another one who doesn't get it. All you people do is talk about how great you're going to be all of August and September and all you do is try to find somebody to blame (like the refs) when your team flat lines and goes home. Have the guts to say your own team stinks. Trust me, mine did last night. You'll probably be saying it again Sunday night after a loss to Philly.
R u an Adrien Broner fan?
mike wilbon (2:25 PM)
Like him...Have only watched him here and there...I watch about 10 percent of the boxing I used to watch...Will Broner bring me (and folks like me who grew up on boxing) back to the TV...
Who gets canned first...Shanny or Jim Scwartz?
mike wilbon (2:28 PM)
They both should go. The Redskins have lost 10 or more games three times in four years. And the Lions, under Schwartz, are tied with the Cowboys for dumbest team in pro football. I can't see how either team continues on in present form, but I think Shanahan does have a shot to keep his job, while Schwartz couldn't possibly have any chance...
Who do you like in the BCS Champ, Auburn or FSU?
mike wilbon (2:28 PM)
I hate the NFL playoff system. Arizona is going to be left out, while 1st place finishers from the pathetic NFC East and North will get a home playoff game. Remember that year the Seahawks finished 7-9 and played a home game against an 11-6 Saints team. Ugh!
mike wilbon (2:29 PM)
worthy comment! Question is, you want the division winners to not make the playoffs? Really?
Does it matter who the Knicks coach is, with the players they have and the terrible owner?
mike wilbon (2:35 PM)
You hit on the answer, kinda...it's the owner. It's Jim Dolan. Having said that, Mike Woodson did a terrific job last year, but the Knicks have over time lost guys like David Lee and Landry Fields and Jeremy Lin, who are NOT huge talents (well, Lee is) but fulfill roles that are very, very important. The deal to get Tyson Chandler was a great one...But the Knicks are way too reliant on J.R. Smith. Iman Shumpert has regressed and is back to trying to do way too much. Chandler's injury hurts the team AND Amare Stoudemire's knees are now totally shot, which is why the Suns declined to resign him a few years ago. They had the x-rays, they knew what was coming. anyway, it all adds up to another terrible team unwisely assembled under this one owner, Dolan, who never seems to get it right.
Do you think Brian Billick would be a good choice to be the next Redskins coach?
mike wilbon (2:48 PM)
I think Billick would be a really good choice for anybody. I'd hire him in a heartbeat BUT I've talked to Billick enough to have real doubs about him wanting to coach again...
Don (Berkeley, CA)
Is the Walter Berry comparison/concern an accurate one when speaking of Kentucky's Julius Randle?
mike wilbon (2:48 PM)
More explosive. Better athlete. Berry had all the savvy and moves but he couldn't play that way in the NBA against bigger, stronger guys, 7-footers and the like...I liken him to Zach Randolph...
It's the X-mas and my wife's family is over, I'm allowed to whine! LOL Happy Holidays Mike!
mike wilbon (2:49 PM)
Ha! Thanks for being a good sport...LOL
Eagles or Cowboys .. and how good is Chip Kelly
mike wilbon (2:51 PM)
Eagles. And chip Kelly has the top-rated passer AND the leading rusher at the same time...something I read that hasn't happened since 1965...Coach of the Year: Andy Reid, Pete Carroll, Bruce Arians, suppose Chip Kelly wins 10 and a division as a rookie? Reid took a 2-14 team to the playoffs....Kelly is really, really good though...
What do you think about Peyton's year so far?
mike wilbon (2:53 PM)
He's the league MVP...No question. Who's the runner-up? Might be Nick Foles. Might be Shady McCoy. Russell Wilson? Cam Newton? Well, all first place votes have to go to Peyton Manning...ALL OF THEM. Does that ultimately matter in judging Peyton's season? Probably not. It's about the playoffs in pro sports, especially when you're already as great as Mr. Manning.
mike wilbon (2:55 PM)
Okay, gotta run to prepare for PTI...Hope everybody out there has a fabulous Christmas and Holiday season...I'm in Brooklyn Christmas Day for a game between two disheartened and disappointing teams, the Bulls and Nets, then off to Arizona for a spell...We'll do this again in the new year, on january 6...So, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for chatting...MW
