Brandon Chatmon (3:59 PM)
Keep sending questions, I'll get started in a minute or two...
Brandon Chatmon (4:02 PM)
Ok, let's get started
William (Des Moines)
Where does the KSU program go when Bill Snyder decides to hang it up for good? Obviously it's a tough place to recruit to so getting somebody who's a great teacher and X & Os guy is paramount. Don't say re-hire Ron Prince.
Brandon Chatmon (4:03 PM)
Too early to say. They should aim for a young, creative coach with some experience though. But that means a name nobody knows right now
Big 12 Expansion: Has the playoff committee said anything about favoring leagues that have a championship game? Would the rules about having 12 teams in order to have a championship game be reduced to 10?Could the Big 12 raid any of the former BCS bowl tie-in conferences? Would the Big twelve consider UCF, BYU, or Cincy otherwise?
Brandon Chatmon (4:05 PM)
I don't see expansion coming anytime soon. I understand that is what a bunch of people want but it's a money game. And if it don't make money, it don't make sense as they say... And, no, I don't imagine the lack of a Big 12 title game becoming a obstacle between a worthy team and a national title shot
ChrisJ a.k.a. The Prophet (Houston)
What's up Brandon "Big Money" Chatmon? I don't know how to feel about the Strong hire. Part of me is excited, but the other part is a little scared for the guy. As Longhorn Nation we have unrealistic expectations, but I think he is the one to take us to the Promise Land sort of speak. I think part of Brown's problem was dealing with the pressure and not being able to get his players to play loose and confident, but I believe Strong will be able to get the longhorns to do that through preparation and accountability.
Brandon Chatmon (4:07 PM)
I think Charlie Strong's destiny will be decided off the field, not on it. In other words, I think Strong will be able to handle the football part of things very well but we won't know how he handles being the head coach at the University of Texas until he does it. If he can handle everything that comes with that, he should be fine. I personally think he will eventually get comfortable with the demands at UT.
Phil M. (Bluefield, WV)
I know the word is that everybody is happy making money and nobody is interested in expansion. Well I have a hard time believing that's the case in Morgantown. We need a couple more teams on the east coast to balance this deal out. Plus we need a Florida team to bolster our recruitting. Florida is to WVU what Texas is to the majority of the Big 12. We use to play there at least every other year in football and every year in basketball. What are your thoughts of this happening soon. Say, UCF and Cincinnati for example. No more Deloss Dodds so lets grow.
Brandon Chatmon (4:09 PM)
I don't see it happening soon but I like the teams you suggest, particularly UCF, and the reasons you're suggesting them. If the Big 12 ever does expand, it will need to expand into new markets, not add from current ones.
Is there any real chance that Tyrone Swoopes takes David Ash's spot at quarter back next season?
Brandon Chatmon (4:09 PM)
Why not? What David Ash done to lock down that spot?
Brandon do you think David Ash can compete for the starting job at Texas with all the time he has missed ?
Brandon Chatmon (4:11 PM)
I think it's open for the taking. By anyone. I'll say this though, I wouldn't build around Ash or count on him to be there indefinitely even if he wins the job. Head injuries are so hard to judge and overcome.
Blake (BBQ Capital of the World)
K-State has a nice streak of having a player drafted in the NFL draft. Will Ty Zimmerman be our guy this year? Anyone else stand a chance at the next level?
Brandon Chatmon (4:14 PM)
Zimmerman should be the best bet but it all depends on what teams want. There are scenarios where a guy would have been much better off going undrafted and picking his own situation/team.
Brian Sallee (Rockwall, TX)
How far up the recruiting ladder do you feel OU will climb before all is said and done?
Brandon Chatmon (4:15 PM)
They'll have to finish strong. But I could see a top 15 class.
Taylor (Denton, TX)
Can Charlie Strong dominate recruiting in Texas like Mack was able to do for all those years? Also, will Texas have a top five class in 2015?
Brandon Chatmon (4:16 PM)
I doubt it. But that's because I think Strong will be more diligent in recruiting guys who fit his team/program and who have not maximized their potential. It's not all about stars/rankings.
Saw this on the season wrap for TCU: "Therea??s a reason why, even on a defense that had an unusually rough year". Well, if finishing #1 in total D in conference games is a "rough" year, I want to know what a good year looks like. Can you explain? I just feel like the D is getting blasted for the offenses inability to score and giving opponents short fields with turnovers.
Brandon Chatmon (4:18 PM)
When I write about TCU's defense I tend to refer to how well it played despite not having much help from the offense. I think the Horned Frogs defense had a pretty good year actually.
Josh Allen (Tulsa)
What are the odds that Joe Mixon gets more playing time next year than Keith Ford? Go Sooners
Brandon Chatmon (4:19 PM)
It wouldn't surprise me. But I think both running backs are pretty special.
Jarroad Keyshawn Hayes IIII (Dtown, TX)
Who is going to win the Big 12?
Brandon Chatmon (4:19 PM)
Oklahoma is my Big 12 favorite for 2014 with Baylor and K-State on their heels.
andreas (wall nj)
Who will Texas get as a OC? And will Charlie keep Major Applewhite on staff?
Brandon Chatmon (4:21 PM)
The Longhorns already have some good candidates on the staff, so if they bring in someone even better than Wickline, Watson, etc... they will be fine. And, based on the guys Strong has already hired, I see no reason to think they won't have a great OC.
Charlie Strong recently laid down the law at UT with a set of rules players will be forced to follow. Some are just fine and others seem excessive. Do you think UT will lose some players/commits?
Brandon Chatmon (4:24 PM)
If they do, why would you want them? That's what I mean about securing guys who fit his program... And I liked the rules by the way, when you raise expectations, people tend to find a way to meet them if they really care.
What am I doing?
Brandon Chatmon (4:25 PM)
I was just about to ask the same thing Michael. But, hey, do you, Mike, do you.
Keith (Seattle, WA)
What's the latest on the DTs that decommitted from Texas after Bo Davis left? Do you think any of these recruits will follow him to Bama? Or will they find a home somewhere else in the Big XII?
Brandon Chatmon (4:25 PM)
recruiting season is heating up, especially now that the dead period is over, so we'll see.
Joe B (Houston)
So does Texas have an OC in place i.e. Watson or watson/wickline combo by default or is Strong still searching for an official OC yet to be named?
Brandon Chatmon (4:26 PM)
I think he's still searching but the Watson/Wickline combo could fit the bill. The Longhorns already have some top-notch coaches in that offensive staff meeting room.
In regards to the question posed earlier about Bill Snyder's eventual retirement, how likely do you think it could be his son Sean that takes over? It's obvious that's who Bill would want it to be, and how could you argue with what he thinks is best?
Brandon Chatmon (4:27 PM)
I wouldn't. That would probably be the right move unless you find someone you think is the next star of the coaching ranks.
Nick (Tulsa OK)
So I just heard that the Alabama's backup qb came on twitter and said he wants to transfer to Oregon St. How big of an impact is that on Alabama making it to the CFBP next year?
Brandon Chatmon (4:30 PM)
I don't think it will have a major impact. When was the last time Alabama's quarterback put the team on his shoulders and led them to a title?
Do you see South Carolina getting Damian Prince 5 star OL from Maryland, Chris Lammons ATH who just decommit from UF, and Dexter Wideman DT whose committed to FSU? If so, how will those recruits benefit the future of South Carolina Program?
Brandon Chatmon (4:32 PM)
Much like the Strong/UT conversation, it all depends on how they fit the system at South Carolina. People get so caught up in recruiting hype but what if a guy doesn't commit himself to becoming great. What then?
Jeff (Tampa, FL)
Mel Kiper has Justin Gilbert going #10 in his first mock draft? Isn't that a little high? Would you be surprised if he's taken at that spot in April?
Brandon Chatmon (4:34 PM)
I don't think so. If Dee Millner can go No. 9, Justin Gilbert can go top 10. Millner isn't anywhere near the athlete that Gilbert is. And Gilbert has more upside too.
Will Coach Strong be able to pick up any big recruits with the amount of time left?
Brandon Chatmon (4:36 PM)
He's trying but he's also focused on putting together a strong coaching staff, which is the higher priority in my opinion. If I was a UT fan, I'd be willing to miss out on some guys in this class if it means we have one of the best overall coaching staffs in the nation. Next year's class is much more important.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Does Stephen Parker leave Norman a Sooner after his visit this weekend?
Brandon Chatmon (4:37 PM)
If he does do you think he signs? I'd be more worried about where his mind is on signing day.. (PS I do think he is in an OU uniform in 2014)
Brian (St Joseph MO)
Can Kstate upset Auburn at home? What will it take for that to happen?
Brandon Chatmon (4:39 PM)
It's going to take a lot. Fortunately the Wildcats have the time to prepare. But it is going to be tough for KSU to match up athletically, so they'll need to execute and get a turnover or two.
Jeff (Tampa, FL)
Have you seen the outlook/future of a program change as quickly as the Sooner program has the past weeks? Brandon, were you among the skeptics?
Brandon Chatmon (4:40 PM)
No and yes. I picked them to lose to K-State, OSU and Alabama. Although I did say I felt like they had a better chance against the Tide than most. I didn't pick them to get run off the field like others did... but the atmosphere around the Sooners has catapulted up a level, no doubt.
Chris Berman (Bristol ,CT)
What a difference a few weeks makes, huh Brandon? As we entered the new year, OU's future looked bleek, well at least uncertain. Now it appears to be on the rise, and couldn't be brighter. THAT'S WHY THEY PLAY THE GAMES?
Brandon Chatmon (4:41 PM)
Indeed, Chris, indeed.
Steak Lover (Houston)
So, are all those boosters and fan groups a good thing for Coach Strong, or a big noisy headache?
Brandon Chatmon (4:43 PM)
Headache is a strong word but I think how he deals with the off-the-field stuff is critical.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
How confident/hopeful are you that Jordan Hicks can follow in the footsteps of his fellow injury riddled classmate, Jackson Jeffcoat, and have a monster year in Austin?
Brandon Chatmon (4:44 PM)
I'll believe it when I see it. The injury bug has been unkind to Mr. Hicks.
Let the games begin. Strong will put the program on track quickly. Still a lot of talent there from previous recruiting years. 1.Players will attend all of their classes and sit in the front two rows of all of their classes. GAs, academic folks, position coaches will be checking constantly now.2.No headphones in class. No texting in class. Sit up and take notes.3.If a player misses a class, he runs until it hurts. If he misses two classes, his entire position unit runs. If he misses three, the position coach runs. The position coaches don't want to run.4.No earrings in the football building. No drugs. No stealing. No guns. Treat women with respect.5.Players may not live off campus anymore, unless they're a senior who hits certain academic standards. The University will buy out the leases for every player currently living off campus and put them in the athletic dorm.6.The team will all live together, eat together, suffer together, and hang out together. They will become a true team and learn to impose accountability on each other. The cliques are over.7.There's no time for a rebuild. "I don't have time for that." The expectation is that Texas wins now.8.Players will learn that they would rather practice than milk a minor injury.9.The focus is on winning and graduating. Anything extraneous to that is a distraction and will be stamped out or removed.10.Strong met individually with seniors and key leaders and re-emphasized that the plan is to win now. They can lead the new culture or be run over by it.11."I don't want to talk about things. I'd rather do things. We just talked. Now it's time to do."
Brandon Chatmon (4:47 PM)
Thanks for the recap R2M... as much negative attention as Strong's rules have gotten, people are overlooking one small thing: Players and recruits parents LOVE THAT LIST. The man just got his foot in the door.
Will (Baton Rouge)
Why doesn't OkState get more preseason love? They return some key starters have have shown they can reload. OU had a great Sugar Bowl, Baylor is returning a lot, but OkState has to be up there with them in terms of potential.
Brandon Chatmon (4:48 PM)
I can't speak for others, but for me it's about the quarterback position and replacing a defense full of three-year starters. OSU has talent but I need to see what happens behind center before I slot them in with those other 3. If you notice those other 3 seem to have a clear direction under center.
Why does anyone care about the SEC's bowl record this year. They played teams with more losses and ranked much much lower. Seems like a farce to me. Yes Auburn played FSU but that was because they had to because they were lucky enough to get into the BCS CG. They need to start making the SEC play against better teams in the post season. It is stuff like this , that most of the nation is sick of.
Brandon Chatmon (4:49 PM)
Who do you want them to play? Suggestions?
John (Red Stick)
What are your thoughts on Strong's hire of Miss. State's OC?
Brandon Chatmon (4:54 PM)
Continues to add quality assistants. The thing I like about what he's doing is he's adding guys who have been or could have be offensive coordinators as position coaches. Thus, he will have an offensive staff full of creative thinkers who take into account all position groups, not just their own, and can work together to come up with quality game plans. It's a very smart approach to building a staff.
Jon (Santa Fe)
As a Tech fan, should I be worried about our QB situation now that Brewer is gone?
Brandon Chatmon (4:55 PM)
Yes. The Red Raiders have 1 QB. Do you have any eligibility left?
Kevin (Reno, NV)
With Sterling Shepherd likely to replace Saunders in the slot. Who are the prime candidates to get it done for the Sooners outside next season? Will Heupel build on the Sugar Bowl and use the TE more next season as well?
Brandon Chatmon (4:56 PM)
Other than Durron Neal, they'll need a newcomer or two to step up... As far as TE, I would think so.
Brian (Rockwall, TX)
Being a die hard Sooner fan myself, I love the game even more. That said, the OU vs Texas rivalry has been great for years. I think when Bradford was injured and both Mack and McCoy showed genuine concern for an athlete laying on the field showed a lot of class (no so much the fans). I don't know as much about Coach Strong but do you believe he will inspire his players to exemplify the class that Mack and Colt showed?
Brandon Chatmon (4:57 PM)
Yes. Doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to put up with a lot of nonsense.
HOW DO YOU THING STONG WILL HANDLE THE RB AT TEXAS NEXT SEASON? WILL HE HAVE A GO TO GUY OR PLAY ALL OF THEM LIKE MACK?
Brandon Chatmon (4:58 PM)
If Gray comes back healthy, and UT doesn't keep handing him the football, I will question Charlie's sanity.
Looking ahead to next season, how do you see the Big XII overall and what team(s) will make a significant impact on the national scene and could be part of the playoff system? Thanks Brandon
Brandon Chatmon (4:59 PM)
I think Baylor, K-State and OU have the best chance to make national waves. Overall, I'd lean toward the Sooners if Trevor Knight doesn't take a step backward after the Sugar Bowl. They have a bunch of young, experienced talent returning.
Jon (Santa Fe)
who do you like in the Tech-Arkansas game? and what do you think of Tech's recent non-conference scheduling?
Brandon Chatmon (5:01 PM)
I'd lean toward Tech since they'll be at home. And I like the way the Red Raiders are adding some interesting non-conference games to their schedule. It will help with exposure and I think it shows Kliff isn't scared to compete against anyone. (Which we already knew)
Brandon Chatmon (5:02 PM)
a couple more questions
Joe B (Houston)
It seems like sources that fed the media outlets during DeLodds reign aren't privy anymore to inside nuggets of info. Folks in longhorn nation seem frustrated with no news coming out of Strong/Patterson regarding a splash hire on his staff is that by design or is there really nothing going on in that front? Also Suddes not being retained, good or bad in your opinion?
Brandon Chatmon (5:05 PM)
Sounds like you're getting to caught up in appearances... as far as your last question. I think it's bad. I felt like Patrick helped jumpstart UT's recruiting when he was hired.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Was Pruitt's move to Georgia about money, getting back to his roots in the SEC, or both? Just curious. He just won a title at FSU, and will have better recruiting classes than at Georgia, while facing less competition?
Brandon Chatmon (5:05 PM)
It wasn't about money, it was about being comfortable and happy.
Baylor--OU or Texas in the B12 next year? The non-conference schedule favors Baylor. Nothing but chumps. OU has Tenn and Texas has UCLA. Thoughts?
Brandon Chatmon (5:06 PM)
OU then Baylor then Texas. I don't know that non-conference schedules will play a major role
Brandon Chatmon (5:07 PM)
one last question since it was a good one
Brandon....you pooh-poohed my question a few weeks ago when i asked how many years of non-SEC natl. champs we'd need before we saw more equity in how the playoff works (i.e., no automatic bump to the top of the 1-loss teams for whichever SEC team has one loss). Well, the streak is now one....care to answer how many more we need?
Brandon Chatmon (5:08 PM)
I'm going with zero, since the committee will be picking the four teams. I don't think the committee is just going to pick SEC teams only, there are too many smart, well-rounded people who will be in the conference room for that to happen.
Brandon Chatmon (5:08 PM)
Thanks everyone, have a great rest of the week!
