Garry Paskwietz (4:59 PM)
Hello everyone, let's get started.
Would Sark implement spread Offense to his playbook this year or will they gradually transition into Spread with new recruits?
Garry Paskwietz (5:00 PM)
Sark will introduce elements of the up-tempo, no-huddle offense this year but it will still be a run-first offense rather than a typical spread.
Dr.P (Bethel, NY)
Hi Garry - As we approach NSD have you perceived any adverse impact upon recruiting attributable to the transitions in the coaching staff?
Garry Paskwietz (5:01 PM)
Hello Dr. P - On the contrary, I think this staff has set things up rather well here as the Trojans head to the final week before signing day. There has been a very good base put together for the class and now it's a matter of reeling in some of the big fish like Adoree', Mama and JuJu.
Christopher (san diego)
Garry with the depth at rb why dont we try D.J Morgan out at corner. Kid was an athlete in HS at Taft. Always felt his best position was CB.
Garry Paskwietz (5:02 PM)
I haven't heard any talk of that. When I saw D.J. earlier this month he was focused on getting back into the competition at tailback. His speed element could be an asset that isn't available with the current backs, not that they are slow but D.J. has a different gear.
Mike (Thousand Oaks)
Any rumors about players transfering?
Garry Paskwietz (5:03 PM)
The only real rumbling came right after the end of the season with questions about Max Wittek possibly transferring but he put a stop to those right away and doesn't appear to be going anywhere.
Any idea who the next BIG Time tailback for SC will be?
Garry Paskwietz (5:04 PM)
As good as I think Busk Allen will be in the immediate future, I also think Justin Davis has a bright, bright future. Of course, so does Ty Isaac, or Tre Madden. USC tailback spot is in good shape right now.
Steve Sark said that he wants to run up-tempo offense in USC. Do you think Ricky Town and Max Browne (ex. mobility) can fit into Sark's offense?
Garry Paskwietz (5:08 PM)
Yes I do. The offense doesn't require a running quarterback that is traditionally associated with a spread offense, it's more a case of a QB who can made good and quick decisions in terms of making the read to give the ball to RB or keep it for a throw.
nokise tanielu [via mobile]
Talofa Garry.........I know we have solid coaching staff now does this mean that our glory days our coming back soon with the talent we have now and a full recruiting class next year? Thanks
Garry Paskwietz (5:09 PM)
Talofa Nokise - Those two points are very encouraging for the Trojans. The staff is solid and they are off to a good start in recruiting with the new talent but the real boost is going to come next year when the Trojans can take 25. That is going to feel like a monster haul for USC fans who have been used to the limited classes the last 3 years.
Tarik D. LaCour, Sr. (Salt Lake City, Utah)
With Sarkisian saying there will not be much contact during the spring, will that mean the QB competition won't be decided until the fall?
Garry Paskwietz (5:11 PM)
It is a very good question. Historically Sark has made a QB decision at the end of spring but this situation could be a little different due to the limited contact in spring. My guess is that it would take a huge spring from one of the other QB's to prevent Sark from keeping Kessler as the starter coming out of spring.
Oscar Batista (Irwindale CA)
Your opinion on how this class will shape and rank in the PAC 12?
Garry Paskwietz (5:13 PM)
I think the class closes strong on signing day and, if the Trojans can do that, I do think they take the top spot in the conference rankings. Right now SC is 24 with other conference schools ahead of them being ASU (17), Stanford (19) and Arizona (21) so if they can close with a couple big name recruits like Adoree', Damien or JuJu then I think they pull ahead of the other schools.
Nicholas (La Mirada, CA)
Garry, does ther WeAreSC staff have any live signing day events planned?Maybe coming to Orange County for a change of pace?Like everyone else - thanks for the great job you've done during the process - we board members can get a little obsessive at times!
Garry Paskwietz (5:14 PM)
No events planned. We haven't found a good spot to do the dinners ever since the Papadakis Taverna closed down. Thanks for the good words.
Garry. Who will fill the last 4 spots for this years class.
Garry Paskwietz (5:16 PM)
I still think the Trojans get the final big 3 on the board with Adoree', Mama and JuJu. Adoree' would be the one who is the hardest to predict right now in terms of where he could end up. As for the last spot, that is really a guess at this point and I will go with Josh Frazier, just because it would be such a big pick-up here at the end.
Greg Paulo (Gold River, CA)
Most prognosticators have Jackson, Smith and Mama signing with the Trojans. What's your take?
Garry Paskwietz (5:16 PM)
I agree with that right now.
I REALLY would love to get Josh Frazier to perpetuate our awesome D-Line. Can you firm up on whether he's visiting this weekend?
Garry Paskwietz (5:18 PM)
No, I cannot firm it up yet. It's still unclear as to whether or not Josh will visit but it is definitely a possibility.
Jay (Los Angeles)
Are you disappointed Pete Carroll didn't order TD bomb (the same one against UCLA in 2009) when Jim Harbaugh called for time-out in NFC Championship game?
Garry Paskwietz (5:21 PM)
I wouldn't say disappointed. It worked so perfectly against UCLA and you never know if you could re-capture that again.
Garry, in your opinion, who will be the final 4 recruits to fill out this years class?
Garry Paskwietz (5:22 PM)
Adoree' Jackson, JuJu Smith, Damien Mama, One of the Fraziers (Josh or Jabril).
With the new offense will we be seeing more backs as receivers!
Garry Paskwietz (5:24 PM)
Perhaps but I think there is going to be more of a continued emphasis on the run than most people realize. Sark has gone out of his way to make sure that everyone knows this will be a physical, run-first offense that will simply be run out of a no-huddle, up-tempo system.
willy l. (los angeles)
usc has more important position needs than qb. was is wise to use a scholarship on jalen greene?
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
I can definitely justify taking a QB in this class. The Trojans were carrying 3 QB's and that just isn't ideal, you prefer to have 4 on the roster at any one time. Plus, Greene offers a skill set that Sark really wants in a QB and, at the very least, Greene can provide a great look as a service team QB against spread opponents in the next year or two.
Shawn G. (Phoenix, AZ)
Is Budda Baker in the mix, if AJ, JUJU, Or Mama doesn't pan out?
Garry Paskwietz (5:26 PM)
Right now Budda appears set to make a decision between UW and UCLA. Sark made a late run earlier this week but it didn't appear to change anything.
Trojan Fan (Louisville)
Is it possible to use a track scholarship for Adoree given his interest and prowess in track and save a scholarship for another prospective player?
Garry Paskwietz (5:28 PM)
If USC did that, he would not be able to play football for two years. The NCAA has that rule in place to prevent schools from stockpiling football players on other programs rosters.
Justin (Ukiah, CA)
Which side of the ball is USC recruiting Adoree Jackson for? When will we know where he is taking his official visit too?
Garry Paskwietz (5:29 PM)
He has said he wants to be recruited as a receiver and the Trojans are honoring that. It wouldn't be a surprise at all if those discussions eventually include some reps on defense as well but right now it is offense. No word yet on an official visit for Adoree'.
Garry, look back over the Carrol years and filter out the great quarterbacks like Palmer, Leinart and Cassel, Booty, Sanchez, Barkley, (even add Corp and Mustain for laughs). That was a span of about ten years with awesome quarterbacks and two Heismans and most of them were drafted by the NFL. With our current QBs and Green and Town on the cusp how how do you see our future with the guys we have and are getting? Comparable?
Garry Paskwietz (5:34 PM)
That run which started with Carson is as good as any 10-year run of quarterbacks as we've seen in college football, in my opinion. With the potential of Kessler building on a good sophomore year, plus a #1 ranked guy waiting in Browne and a
scmiker (west hills)
Do you think Ricky Towns is a good locker room guy? Good leader?
Garry Paskwietz (5:35 PM)
Yes on both counts.
ss (inland empire)
whats your opinion on lamont simmons and josh frazier ending up in cardinal and gold
Garry Paskwietz (5:36 PM)
I think there is a chance on both. Simmons seems to have really come on lately as a legit option and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up in the class. With Frazier, I think it comes down to the visit. If he makes the trip, I think he eventually comes, he just needs to make that visit first this weekend.
Are we now 100% locked on the 15 commits so we really only have 4 spots left?
Garry Paskwietz (5:38 PM)
There are 5 players enrolled early so those would be the only "locks". There are 10 other players verbally committed which means 4 open spots as of today.
JP, Arkansas [via mobile]
How big a factor is track to Adoree's decision and who really has the best shot of landing him?
Garry Paskwietz (5:39 PM)
Really big factor. He has legit dreams of competing in the Olympics eventually in the long jump and he's serious about competing in both sports in college. I still think he's coming to SC but you can't rule out a pair of SEC schools in LSU and Florida.
trojanfanntn (Nashville, TN)
Is pro day going to be an open event to the general public?
Garry Paskwietz (5:40 PM)
It hasn't been in the past. it's always been open to media and family only.
Kevin P (Venice)
Any word on when we will know the status about the Lewis kid, Jabrill Frazier , Bobby Johnson and that Julian kid that usc where showing interest in?
Garry Paskwietz (5:41 PM)
it sounds like Bobby Johnson is firm with his Fresno State commit as of yesterday so he may not visit SC. The others may be a case of having to wait until signing day before knowing anything since they will likely be waiting on the status of Adoree', JuJu or Damien to know if there is a spot available.
fightonSC (Orange County)
We heard Dixon say after the official visit last weekend that he was shutting down his recruitment. Subsequently heard that may be changing. Is he officially shut down?
Garry Paskwietz (5:42 PM)
No, not officially shut down. As of right now he is planning a visit to UCLA this weekend.
Lewis (Huntington Beach, CA)
Garry: It appears that Coach Sarkisian will be using a third receiver more often than a fullback in his offensive formations. Given Agholor and Rogers will be the flanker and split ends, who would you project to be in the slot? Is it possible that Adoree Jackson would become the starter in the slot with Mitchell still recovering from surgery?
Garry Paskwietz (5:44 PM)
In regards to the fullback, Sark has said that he will adjust to the personnel available to him so that could include the use of the fullback with two good ones available to him. As far as the slot receiver role, Adoree' is a possibility if he comes to SC but I still think guys like Mitchell and Farmer are real options too.
Adoree Jackson seems like the type of guy that likes to surprise and not give any hints....I bet he picks LSU since rumor is UF or USC. Do you agree? I do not think SC gets him.
Garry Paskwietz (5:46 PM)
I agree that he hasn't given any hints, there are a lot of people at his school who have no idea what is going on with him. But Adoree' hasn't made light of the recruiting process, he hasn't done a lot of flip-flopping or anything like that. If you would have asked people last summer about his top schools, you would have seen USC, Florida and LSU on that short list and I think those are his finalists as well. LSU is not just a random choice, it's a very legit option for him.
Bryan (Los Angeles)
If USC manages to sign AJAX, Mama, and JuJu, who do you see getting the last available spot? Do you see Josh Frazier potentially flipping after visiting this weekend or is there legitimate interest from Michiah Quick?
Garry Paskwietz (5:48 PM)
Frazier is a possibility, as is a guy like Lamont Simmons. It sounds like Quick will be heading elsewhere.
Lewis (Huntington Beach, CA)
Garry: Hi. I hear Aundrey Walker is recovering from surgery and may not be available for spring practice. I hear Jordan Simmons is recovering from surgery, is now at about 380 pounds, and may also not be available for spring practice. So who is going to be the starting OL for spring?
Garry Paskwietz (5:51 PM)
It wouldn't surprise me at all if neither player is available for spring. it doesn't sound like Sark is really pushing injured guys to get back by spring, he is focused on installing things in spring and then having a healthy roster for fall camp. With that being the case, I can see a starting OL group in spring as LT - Wheeler, LG - Tuerk, C - Lobendahn, RG - Rodgers, RT - Falah.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Did Town's decommitment from Bama have to do more with Kiffin's arrival in Tuscaloosa, or Nussmeier's departure? I vote the former considering two guys have left.
Garry Paskwietz (5:56 PM)
There are elements of both. The Nussmeier departure was certainly important, that was a key guy for Town, but there was still a chance he would have stayed with Bama depending on the OC. But the fact that it was Kiffin sealed the departure for Town. There was just no relationship between Town and Kiffin at SC, which helped lead to the longtime SC fan committing to Bama in the first place. It's not an accident that it took a short time for him to de-commit from Bama and flip to SC after Kiffin was hired with the Tide.
Carlton huntley [via mobile]
Where do things stand with Lamont Simmons?
Garry Paskwietz (5:57 PM)
He's a definite option. The coaches will have an in-home visit with him this week and it wouldn't be a shock if he ends up as part of the SC class.
Ricky (Los Angeles)
Garry, How many players can USC sign in 2015 once the scholarship reductions are lifted? Can we sign more than 25 to make up for the players that have left early/washed out?
Garry Paskwietz (5:58 PM)
25, no more. It will seem like a huge class compared to the last 3 years.
Jackie (Los Angeles)
Hey Garry, can USC take any players from other schools that will transfer and not count against the 19 scholarship?
Garry Paskwietz (5:59 PM)
No. Any transfer that comes in would count against the 19 number.
Is it more for publicity/player morale to open up the QB competition, or do you realistically expect a challenge to cody from anyone named Max? Also, any thoughts on this movement at NU to unionize? Thanks for all your work.
Garry Paskwietz (6:01 PM)
I wrote an article on the site yesterday talking about the QB competition. With the year Cody had in 2013, he would definitely be the starter heading into spring if i was coach and it would take a lot to see any movement there. With that being said, Max Browne is probably the one guy with a "shot" at getting the job but it would surprise me if that happens. As for NU, i applaud the notion behind what they are doing if it helps expose hypocrisy within the NCAA.
Garry Paskwietz (6:02 PM)
Thanks everyone, that's all the time we have for today. Sorry if we didn't get to your questions, there was just too much to talk about today. See everyone next week for signing day.
