Katie Strang (1:00 PM)
Greetings, puckheads! Don't you just love this time of year? Olympics right around the corner and, as such, trade talks heating up! Lots of ground to cover. Let's get after it, shall we?
Brendan (Boston, MA)
What defenseman are on the market for the Bruins with Seidenberg out for the year?
Katie Strang (1:02 PM)
Granted, Dan Girardi's agent is expected to touch base with GM Glen Sather before the olympic break, but if the two sides remain at an impasse, he would obviously be an intriguing option. Also, Andrew MacDonald, who the Islanders have yet to re-sign to an extension, making it look increasingly likely that he will get dealt
Nathan Loves the Blues (St. Louis)
Out of the two most prominently named target of the Blues, which do you see as the best fit, Callahan or Miller, and will one of them be a Blue?
Katie Strang (1:02 PM)
I honestly believe the Blues are interested in both player, but I still think Ryan Miller is the more likely of the two to be playing in St. Louis on March 6.
Will the Caps make any significant moves before the deadline, or will they stand pat and hope for the best? Any trade rumors floating around out there for them?
Katie Strang (1:06 PM)
One problem, Joe, if I'm assuming correctly you mean making a trade deadline acquisition. The Caps have very limited cap space -- approximately $200,000 -- and very little wiggle room unless they ship players out in a deal. Caps are in a tough spot -- seventh in the Metro but only three points back -- and that is the trouble with a lot of teams right now. Feels like the market of buyers and sellers -- at least in the East -- isn't as well-established this year.
@DXFlyers (Norristown PA)
Glad you are not in Sochi with stray dog and plumbing problems?
Katie Strang (1:06 PM)
Extremely. Never before have I so valued shower curtains.
Ari Cohen (Miami)
Why doesn't Vanek love us? :( With that said, WHO WE GETTING and from who? Who needs him to make the next step to win a cup?
Katie Strang (1:08 PM)
In all fairness, Vanek did actually seem to have a favorable impression of the team and the organization as a whole. He has repeatedly said he won't rule out the Islanders when he tests the market. But can't blame a guy for wanting to explore UFA for the first time. I think LA could really use his scoring touch up front, but they have limited cap space so his hit may ultimately be too prohibitive
Do you like Sweden's chances at gold the way Lundqvist has played lately?
Katie Strang (1:08 PM)
Absolutely. And despite their injuries up front, they are my pick to win it all. Good, talented young D as well
Harry (Binghamton, NY)
Usually Pittsburgh dominates the Rangers, but not so much this year. What do you think would be the keys to a playoff series between them? Can tomorrow's game be a playoff preview OR is Sochi too much of a distraction now?
Katie Strang (1:10 PM)
Goaltending. I don't think there's any question that Pittsburgh has been the better team this season, but when Lundqvist is playing like he is right now, he gives the Rangers a certain X-factor. And if you consider how things went for Marc-Andre Fleury last spring....
Do you think Yzerman had no choice but to select Marty St. Louis once Stamkos was declared out?
Katie Strang (1:11 PM)
Correct. But it would be wrong to view this as a pity selection. St. Louis has more than earned his right to be there. Sad for Stamkos, who busted his butt and did everything he could to get back in time, but I'm also happy for St. Louis that he'll get a chance now in Sochi
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Katie, now that we are on the eve of the Olympics, are there any non-hockey events you will be following? And what is your favorite winter Olympic moment? I think we are about the same age (31), and there were so many memorable performances from our youth: Picaboo Street, Alberto Tomba, Tommy Moe, Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, Katarina Witt, Bonnie Blair, Dan Jansen, and not to mention the Harding-Kerrigan ordeal. Sadly I was not born to witness the Miracle on Ice or Eric Hyden.
Katie Strang (1:13 PM)
Have always and will always love to watch figure-skating. Michelle Kwan was my long-time favorite, though I was also a big Surya Bonaly fan (remember his backflips!) Can's wait to see Jason Brown in action for the men. Kid's got charisma
Katie Strang (1:14 PM)
meant to say "those" backflips. oops!
Doug (Long Island)
Scott, do you see Crosby not liking Giroux and vice versa having any effect on who is picked to replace Stamkos on Team Canada?
Katie Strang (1:15 PM)
what is the latest info on cally? seems like both sides have calmed down. do you think sather's tactics may have loosened cally's demands?
Katie Strang (1:17 PM)
The two sides are expected to touch base today to see where things stand. Not a ton of time between now and the freeze, so I'm becoming increasingly skeptical that this situation is resolved before then, but things can always change in a hurry
what kind of a package do you think the isles will be looking for for vanek? and what about macdonald and nabby should they happen to be dealt?
Katie Strang (1:19 PM)
Have to remember that he is a pure rental, so I'd say a first-round pick. Depending on how much interest Snow is getting maybe a prospect/roster player as well
Derek (New York)
With Visnovsky returning & Hamonic due back any day, do you think the Islanders can still make a playoff push?
Katie Strang (1:20 PM)
No I don't. Have seen nothing to suggest any semblance of consistency, which is essentially what separates the playoff teams from the ones that are done in April
Marc (Malden, MA)
With the complete disaster that is Sochi, I could absolutely see US/Canada players say "forget this, let's go 0-3 and get the heck out of here."
Katie Strang (1:21 PM)
Trust me, no matter how bad the beds are and how grimy the tap water, players take this tournament very seriously. They are all in it to win Gold
Stu (Newport Beach)
Katie, do you see the Ducks making any significant moves before the deadline for their playoff run? Seems they have a lot of assets and prospects to offer.
Katie Strang (1:22 PM)
And they can use an offensive boost right not. Blanked last night for the second time in three games and have suffered three straight regulation losses -- a first this season. They'll be welcoming the chance to hit the re-set button once the break arrives, then likely reassess before the trade deadline
Any truth to the rumors that I'm going to be dealt to the Kings?
Katie Strang (1:23 PM)
According to my colleague Pierre LeBrun, talks between LA and Edmonton are heating up. There appears to be interest in Gagner, though LA's cap situation may throw a wrench into things
Darren (New Jersey)
What scoring help may come to the Devils by March 5th if any? When will you be on MvsW, you are absolutely my favorite guest on there?
Katie Strang (1:25 PM)
Thank you, Darren. That is my favorite show to do and I'm glad you are a loyal listener ;). Problem for the Devils is they don't have a first-round pick to give up this year and no team wants to give up one the following (Connor McDavid draft), so unless the Devils move Brodeur or someone else, they might not have a lot to entice a scoring forward coming back their way
JP (Babylon, NY)
Are you predicting a lot of trade activity tomorrow before the trade freeze for the Olympics? It's almost as if there are two trade deadlines this year; tomorrow and then March 5th
Katie Strang (1:26 PM)
I don't think we'll see a flurry like trade deadline day, but I think we may see one or two in the next 24 hours.
Chris M (NYC)
Are you a fan of Olympic women's hockey? Either way, who is your pick for gold?
Katie Strang (1:27 PM)
Yes, and here is where I will be a shameless patriot and pick the US team
do you really like Sweden more than Canada? Canada just seems too loaded to me.
Katie Strang (1:27 PM)
Also hard to predict how they will fare on the bigger ice surface
I don't see the Isles' goaltending solution coming from in house. Do you think they in any way look for a goaltending solution at this trade deadline or is that a summer issue?
Katie Strang (1:29 PM)
With the assets they have to move right now and their well-documented history in acquiring top talent via free agency, I think it would behoove them to try and address it now through a trade. Doesn't mean they will do it, but I think they should
Reports are coming in that A-Mac turned down a 4yr, $16mm deal from the Isles - Good riddance. Is he the best D-man that will get traded?
Katie Strang (1:31 PM)
He will certainly draw a lot of interest. As far as the report, I spoke to his agent right before the chat. He wouldn't get into specifics, but said he and the team have not had any recent discussions but that, "they know where we are with wanting to remain on the Island"
Mike Howard (Columbus)
When will the Blue Jackets start getting some respect?
Katie Strang (1:32 PM)
Hopefully, soon, because I picked them as my dark horse team in the East and I think they could be a really fun group to watch in the playoffs. Especially considering the deals and swaps between the two teams, I'm sort of pulling for a Rangers-Blue Jackets first-round match-up
Dave (Berkeley Heights, NJ)
Care to debunk the "Richards is playing better and will/would only get amnestied because of his recapture clause" logic that's been popping up? Keeping him on (payout aside) is the equivalent of signing him to a 6 year, $40MM cap deal this offseason. Its insane.
Katie Strang (1:34 PM)
Hate to break it to you, but the potential recapture penalty will absolutely be the biggest determining factor in Richards' future with the team. Regardless of how well or how poor he plays, the penalties are too massive to ignore
Gene Mullett (Columbus, OH)
What's up with Callahan? Sure, it seems like a lot of money if 7 yr/$6 million per is what he's asking, but how can Sather pay Richards all that dough & not take care of his own players?
Katie Strang (1:35 PM)
And you have to imagine that is what Callahan and his agent feel. As one agent told Craig Custance earlier this week, the Rangers pay strangers and ask family to take less. That must cause their homegrown talent to bristle and I don't blame them. But that's also the nature of the business and the free agency market
would any team but the Sabres be dumb enough to give Callahan 6 mil for 7 years?
Katie Strang (1:36 PM)
I think multiple teams would be willing to pay this price, yes
Is Cam Talbot a future #1 goalie in this league?
Katie Strang (1:37 PM)
Granted it has been a small sample size, but it's hard not to believe he has that potential. Assuming he feels the same way, what does the future hold for him? With Lundqvist's eight-year extension, he has to know the King is not abdicating the throne anytime soon.
Kevin (Chicago, IL)
Hey Katie. MSU Alumni here - Go Green! My question for you is regarding the Red Wings and Stephan Weiss. He has been out for significant time and even before his was injuried, he really wasn't living up to expectations. Do you think the Red Wings will consider buying him out this summer, look to move him or do you think they will hang onto him?
Katie Strang (1:40 PM)
Hey Kevin- Go Green! Can't buy out an injured player, but I'm not sure I see the Wings pulling the trigger on a buyout just yet. May want to see what he's got next year, perhaps explore the trade market once his value increases
Judeman5000, CPA (Thornton, CO)
Have you heard what the possible asking price for McDonald is?
Katie Strang (1:42 PM)
Not confirmed, but I'm guessing Snow is looking for a first-round pick. Not saying he will get it, but I imagine that is what he is seeking
Will the flyers make the playoffs this season?
Katie Strang (1:43 PM)
I keep waffling on this, but I'm going to say No.
Katie Strang (1:43 PM)
Ok all, we are going to wrap up there for today. Thanks for swinging by and enjoy your Olympic break!
