Chad Ford (12:59 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. NBA Trade deadline is about 26 hours away. Lots of rumors flying around. We will do trade deadline in first half and end with a few NBA draft things ... Let's roll ..
calexan1 (Columbus, OH)
So the Cavs are publicly shopping Luol Deng, who is reportedly unhappy in Cleveland, which more than likely means he won't resign in the off-season. I understand from the Cavs' perspective of not wanting to lose him for nothing, but I think the bigger impact is what this says about the organization to future free agents. Deng has been with the Cavs barely 2 months. Thoughts?
Chad Ford (1:02 PM)
Cavs know he's unhappy and he's an unrestricted free agent this summer. He's an asset. Interestingly they are in a tough place. They've won 5 straight. They could very well make the playoffs and Dan Gilbert would be happy. But the cost of doing so would be pretty enormous -- the lose out on a high lottery pick and they likely lose Deng over the summer and are back to square one. That's why this is being explored. If a team like the Suns can offer the Cavs so real assets, long-term, it's the best move. Yes, the Cavs are a mess, but the fact that they are even exploring moving Deng says they are probably starting to think more clearly than in any other time in the last 10 months. Hope Cavs fans!
Will, Ohio [via mobile]
Who can Cleveland expect to get in return for Luol Deng if they trade him?
Chad Ford (1:03 PM)
Since he's a free agent this summer, it will likely be picks and another expiring contract. That's why the Suns are such an appealing situation.
Hearing a Shumpert and Felton for Collison and Bullock trade is being discussed. How much of an upgrade do you think this is? Bullock is a 3 and d guy and collison is a good pg but do we gain that much?
Chad Ford (1:06 PM)
Yahoo reporting that. A couple of things to keep in mind. The Shumpert-Collison part has been talked about for a while between the teams but deal needs to be bigger. The Felton-Bullock part is the part the Knicks want. Clippers have been resisting and doesn't work anyway under cap rules. I think Clipps would prefer Matt Barnes be in the deal and they hold onto Bullock. I think they'd also prefer Beno Udrih to Felton right now.
Rick DeHonney [via mobile]
Any truth to Rondo to Houston and if so is parsons included. I just don't see it happening since Morey and Ainge are such good gms and both are going to expect too much.
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
Rondo has been available for months, but the price is high. I don't think the Rockets have the assets. Parsons would help, Asik would obviously be part of it. But the Rockets draft picks aren't anything to write home about. Celtics would prefer much higher picks. The Kings proposed trade was more appealing, but Kings realized they probably don't have a shot of re-signing Rondo. Raptors could be an interesting team if they want to throw their hats in the ring. They have the assets and I think Masai Ujiri could convince Rondo to stay long term.
Do you see the Jazz making a move, even if it means giving up a young piece like Kanter, by the deadline to improve their lottery chances?
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
No. Don't think they give up any of their young core -- especially if it's just to lose more. They only give up one of those guys if they get blown away with an offer. I think if anyone goes, it will be Marvin Williams.
Is Asik on the move?
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
He's been on the move for months, regardless of what the Rockets say publicly. Its' convincing a team to swallow the last year of his contract that's scaring everyone away.
JT Waugh (Indianapolis)
What do you think of an Eric Gordon + an asset for Greg Monroe deal?
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
In theory makes a lot of sense. But sounds like the Pistons are reluctant to let Monroe go and if they did it would be because they don't think they can afford him. Gordon's max deal wouldn't fit for the same reason. But in theory, adding a shooter to stretch the floor and allow Josh Smith to move to the four is the right sort of me. I think Arron Afflalo might be a better fit.
Walter (Philadelphia, PA)
Which of these three are sixers on Friday, Hawes, Turner, Young?
Chad Ford (1:15 PM)
Think Turner is the most likely to go. I think the deal the Bobcats are talking about with the Sixers works for both teams. Think they are just feeling out other possibilities. Hawes would be next. Think Young is the least likely to leave.
What was it like coaching both the Sixers and the Celtics?
Chad Ford (1:16 PM)
Have no idea. You'll have to ask CHRIS Ford.
John (Los Angeles)
Do you think an addition of Marcus Thornton to the Nets will put them back into the playoffs?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
Not a huge Thornton fan. Not really. But at this point probably an upgrade over Jason Terry. But long term, not sure this move makes a big difference.
Should Minnesota consider moving Kevin Love now? What is a realistic package that they could expect?
Chad Ford (1:19 PM)
Given everything I know about the situation, there's about 95 percent chance Love is leaving. So the question for the Wolves is when is the best time to get value for him. I think the draft/summer would probably be the ideal time to move him. Typically it's harder to get the best value at the trade deadline. The challenge is that the only teams willing to offer huge assets are the teams that think they can re-sign him. However, those same teams think they could get him for nothing if they just waited a year which means, essentially, the Wolves will never get equal value in return.
Chad, what's it feel like to have invented the automobile and how did you make the transition to NBA Draft expert? Quite a leap!
Chad Ford (1:22 PM)
I have not idea. That's HENRY Ford. I'm Chad Ford.
Cody (St. Louis)
Would the Warriors trade Barnes (and R. Jefferson TE) for Deng?
Chad Ford (1:25 PM)
That's a good question. The Warriors want to win now and Barnes has struggled coming off the bench. Not sure who would go to the bench in that scenario. I've been told that preferably the Warriors find a big time power forward -- Kevin Love is the ideal. But it's doubtful they can get him for a combo of Barnes and David Lee. Would probably take Klay Thompson as well and that's probably too high of a price for the Warriors. But a number of younger players like the Pistons' Greg Monroe, the Sixers' Thaddeus Young, the Cavs' Tristan Thompson, the Nuggets Kenneth Faried, the Bucks' John Henson and the Raptors' Amir Johnson all intrigue the Warriors. They are telling Barnes and everyone he isn't available, but they aren't exactly hanging up the phone when GMs have called.
Is it just me or does Philadelphia have an insanely bright future. They have MCW, Noel, tons of cap space this summer, and loads of 1sts. What should be their next move?
Chad Ford (1:26 PM)
I love what Sam Hinkie has done. Obviously Noel needs to turn into a stud and they will have to nail their draft picks this summer, but if they do it, they'll be the most promising young team in the league by next season.
Chad what was it like being first lady and what made you decide to dedicate so much of your life to the treatment of drug & alcohol abuse?
Chad Ford (1:27 PM)
I have no idea. That's BETTY Ford.
Jonathan (San Diego)
What are the chances that the Nuggets make any moves?
Chad Ford (1:29 PM)
They have just about everything on the table. Andre Miller most likely to go. But everyone other than Ty Lawson is on the table.
Gary (Simi Valley)
Bucks making any moves this deadline? How do you think they rank the top 3 dudes in the draft?
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Probably will be a small deal. Gary Neal and Luke Ridnour both have suitors and Bucks not opposed to moving either. But both of those deals won't move the needle much. Lots of interest in Caron Butler too (especially after he hit 7 3s last night) but they seem reluctant to let him go. If they make a bigger deal (again unlikely) I think it's Ersan Ilyasova that would be the bigger name leaving. As for the draft think it goes: 1. Embiid 2. Wiggins 3. Parker ... but still very early.
Jordy (New Orleans)
I heard that the Pelicans have a deal in place for Austin Rivers, but have been waiting til the right moment to pull the trigger. Any truth?
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
There is some moderate interest around the league in Rivers. Bucks among the teams interested. Clipps are too. But I've been told the Pelicans are pushing for an even bigger deal that would ship off Tyreke Evans and/or Eric Gordon. Neither guy easy to move, but makes some sense. They want to tank rest of the season and try to get a Top 5 pick. If they don't get in the top 5, the pick goes to the 76ers.
Do the Hawks do anything at the deadline? Ferry is a smart GM, but I am confused that we aren't sellers and playing for the lotto. With Horford out, doesn't it make sense to dangle Teague, Korver, Lou Williams, even Millsap?
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
Hard to get into the lotto in the Eastern Conference right now! Way easier to make the playoffs. With that said, I think all the guys you mention can be had for the right price. Danny Ferry knows this isn't the team you build around going forward.
Tuong (Los Angeles)
Durant for Lebron. Which team says no to this trade first?
Chad Ford (1:37 PM)
OKC. They'd have zero shot at keeping LeBron who can opt out of his contract this summer.
How does it feel having Jay Z write a song about you? Also, do you see the Raptors doing a deal? It's impossible to read Masai Ujiri.
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
I have no idea. That's TOM Ford. And yes, I think the Raptors are going to be very active and despite suggestions to the contrary, even Kyle Lowry is in play.
Why don't the Pistons and Pelicans swap Josh Smith and either Gordon or Evans? Contracts match and it seems like those guys would fit better on each other's teams.
Chad Ford (1:40 PM)
Josh Smith may have the most untradable contract in the NBA right now.
Do you see Jordan Hill getting Moved?
Chad Ford (1:41 PM)
Marc Stein reporting that the Nets still pushing to get this done, despite finalizing the Marcus Thornton deal. Nets going to be serious tax payers this summer. They are going all in .
Hi. What do you think the Bulls need to do to get to the promise land?
Chad Ford (1:42 PM)
A healthy Derrick Rose and some cap relief as ownership doesn't want to be a tax paying team. Doubt they make a move before the deadline.
Justin H (Sacramento)
Can the Heat make any trades that would help them defeat the Pacers in the Playoffs?
Chad Ford (1:44 PM)
They've actually been out there, sniffing around. The problem is that the Heat don't have a lot of assets to offer back for valuable players. Norris Cole has a lot of interest. But the Heat are very reluctant to let Cole go.
Safe to say that Tyler Ennis has passed Marcus Smart on most draft boards?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
No. He may on draft day, but Smart hasn't taken nearly the hit to his draft stock as the college basketball world has reported. But if Smart can't get his act together on the court (talking shooting, fewer turnovers and winning basketball games) he could take a hit. Ennis is so steady, there's a lot of appeal there. But they are both Top 10 picks.
Chad, what was it like to be the 38th President of the United States?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
I have no idea. That's GERALD Ford. I'm Chad.
Ryan (New Jersey)
Is Joel Embiid still your top rated prospect and who do you prefer between Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker? Best fit for Sixers?
Chad Ford (1:50 PM)
Yes. Embiid No. 1. I'm told Sixers prefer Wiggins right now. They'd be crazy athletic with MCW, Embiid and Wiggins as their core. Would just need to add a shooter to that mix and wow ...
Joshua (St George, Utah)
Listened to the podcast you did with Bill Simmons (Good stuff btw) and you said Jabari Parker is terrible on the defensive side of the ball. In the NBA, Do you think he's going to be worse than Melo?
Chad Ford (1:51 PM)
That's about right ... as far as defensive prowess goes. But Parker is going to be an All-Star because he's such a lethal scorer. I really like the Glenn Robinson comp for him.
Dante Exum: is he more of a 1 or 2 position wise? Best team fit?
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
He can play both, but his value goes up if he's a one and that's the way he'll be marketing himself to NBA teams. I think he can be a point guard. Has all the skills, just needs a little polish. Where he's lethal is getting to the rim. Super quick first step.
Aren't Jerami Grant/Aaron Gordon basically the same prospect? Super athlete and cant shoot. Why is Gordon considered a better prospect?
Chad Ford (1:54 PM)
Similar in many ways. Gordon just had a better rep out of college and I think scouts believe he has a bigger impact on the defensive end. If either could learn how to shoot ... wow. Both go in the 6 to 15 range on draft night.
What was it like working with Chewbacca? Did he have to work with a translator on set?
Chad Ford (1:55 PM)
I WISH I knew. That's HARRISON Ford. But if I could be another Ford, that's the Ford I'd be.
Coach Calipari has normally showcased young talent to increase their draft prospects but hasn't he really hurt julius randles? He surrounded Randle with non shooters so defenses can just collapse and doesn't allow Randle to play outside of ten feet from the hoop. With a spaced out court and the ability to develop an outside game couldn't he be more effective in the nba then on this kentucky team.
Chad Ford (1:57 PM)
That's the hope of so many NBA scouts. They really believe Randle has much more to show offensively than he's been able to at Kentucky. Can't blame Coach Cal for what he's done. He's trying to work with the players he has and win basketball games. His job isn't to showcase Randle. But this is the rare case where a Kentucky player might actually look better in the NBA. Randle really does have a nice perimeter game.
Thoughts on KJ McDaniels? Should have similar stock as Jerami Grant
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
Another terrific athlete. Some NBA teams have him as a first rounder. A bit older than both Aaron Gordon and Jerami Grant which explains why his stock is a little lower. The team he plays for doesn't help either.
How does it feel to be a country in Africa AND an ESPN analyst?
Chad Ford (1:58 PM)
I wish I knew. That's CHAD. I'm Chad. Wait ...
Chad Ford (1:59 PM)
Have a great trade deadline everyone. After it's over, we're going to start moving these chats into full-time NBA Draft. Have a great 25 hours of watching and hoping!
