A few weeks ago Coach Harbaugh,Bisciotti, and Torrey said that an extension would be nice and now there's no word. What's going on?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:05 PM)
Nothing new on that front. The Ravens would like to get a deal done, and Torrey Smith might be mulling whether he should wait for free agency. Smith enjoys being a Raven but he also wants his market value. Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did get an extension done with WR Antonio Brown and the Steelers at the start of training camp a couple of years ago. So, I'm not ruling it out that something could get done before the season.
Ryan (McSherrystown, PA)
Fact: Flacco needs a solid rushing attack to be successfulConclusion: The Ravens will draft Zack Martin/Carlos Hyde in rds 1 & 2.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:08 PM)
I agree that running back has to be one of the top priorities. I wrote about that today on the blog (How Ray Rice impacts the draft). Sorry for that shameless plug. If the Ravens are going to draft a running back, Hyde is the only RB that is worthy of going that high. It wouldn't surprise me if the Ravens did this, but my money is on the Ravens taking a RB in the third round.
Todd (Baltimore)
Instead of drafting an O-lineman, I'd rather see the Ravens draft Lee or Beckham at #17. Both have the potential to be number one guys or above average number 2 guys. Your thoughts?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:11 PM)
If I'm using a first-round pick on a wide receiver, I would go with Texas A&M's Mike Evans. There is a drop-off after him, and I don't think there is a receiver that is worth the No. 17 overall pick. I see more value for a OL or safety at that spot.
Ryan (Baltimore)
If Clinton-Dix is gone by #17, what would you think of the Ravens drafting Dennard or Gilbert if they are there? It would fill a need and give the Ravens a potential starter next year if they cut Webb.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:14 PM)
I believe cornerback is the dark horse choice for the Ravens in the first two rounds. Darqueze Dennard and Justin Gilbert are the top two corners in the draft. There's a chance both will be gone before the Ravens select at No. 17. I wouldn't have a problem with the Ravens taking either one in the first round. The Ravens need a nickel back this year and could use a starter in 2015, when Lardarius Webb's cap number increases to $11 million.
Mark (PA)
Is there any chance the Ravens still sign someone like Winston before the draft? It would give the Ravens only one real need at Free Safety heading into the draft
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:16 PM)
Winston played six years for Kubiak, so there is a connection. But Ravens coach John Harbaugh recently said there are no current talks with him. So, don't expect anything to happen with him before the draft.
Fred (Maryland)
Assuming that Gary Kubiak and the assistants around can turn around a very poor offensive line, how well do you thing the Ravens will bounce back and be contenders again?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:18 PM)
If the Ravens can turn around the offense, they'll be considered Super Bowl contenders again. The defense was playoff-caliber last season for the most part. It was the offense that held back the Ravens. They don't need to be a top-10 offense either. They just can't be in the bottom 10.
Jared (Texas)
With Mcclain not looking good, how long can we expect the type of production out of Smith we saw last year? Is there anyway that the Ravens would consider CJ Mosley at 17 if the draft falls that way?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
I will be intrigued what the Ravens would do if Mosley is available at No. 17. He has the chance to be a Pro Bowl middle linebacker. I'm not sure the Ravens go that route because they just re-signed Daryl Smith and invested a second-round pick in Arthur Brown. If the Ravens take him, it's an instance where they do take the best player available.
Josh (Baltimore)
With the off-season moves we have made thus far, is the logical pick at 17 RT? Or does ozzy stay true to his ways and go best player?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
The best bets in the first round are offensive line and safety.
Bobby (Baltimore)
What's more likely. the Ravens adding a cornerback in the third or fourth round or a defensive lineman?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:24 PM)
Cornerback. Ravens are in good shape at defensive line with Brandon Williams and Kapron Lewis-Moore. There is more of a need at cornerback after losing Corey Graham.
Ryan (Clemson)
Most likely to be available at n0.17.. Clinton-Dix, pryor, or martin?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
More likely to be there at No. 17: Pryor, Martin and then Clinton-Dix.
Ravenous128 (Columbia, MD)
Most mocks have the Ravens selecting a safety. Why isn't the emphasis more on the offensive line, which was far more of a problem last season? It seems like associating the Ravens with defense may be overshadowing everyone's opinions.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:27 PM)
I've actually seen a fair amount of analysts predicting Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin. He is a strong candidate for No. 17, in my opinion.
Eric Smith (Bel Air )
Are the Ravens considering drafting Terrance West to add depth at RB? I think he would be a great addition and impact our running game a lot! And theres not even question that the kid is a hard worker!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
West is among the running back candidates that all teams are going to be looking at when it comes to the third and fourth rounds.
Jerry (Eastern Shore)
When in the draft do you expect the Ravens to draft a tight end? Who do you think could be possible targets?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:31 PM)
Here is how I see the TE class: Eric Ebron (first round), Jace Amaro (second round), Austin Seferian-Jenkins (second or third round), Troy Niklas (third round) and C.J. Fiedorowicz (third or fourth round).
Jimmie (Philly)
Do you think the Ravens need to get their WR in the 2nd Round? I believe it will be a run on them during that Round. I think Watkins, Evans, Beckham, Lee, Cooks and Benjamin will be selected in the first.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
If Evans is there at No. 17, the Ravens should take him. I don't believe he's going to be there. Taking any of the other WRs at No. 17 seems a stretch for me. The Ravens aren't going to reach for anyone, especially at wide receiver where they have been burned in the past. I believe the Ravens will add a WR but it may be in the third or fourth rounds.
Rob (Glen Allen, VA)
Hi Jamison. Any word on when the Reg Season Schedule is going to be released? Last I heard was some time in mid-April but it is now mid-April. Since the draft was moved back 2 weeks, that's really all we have to look forward to in April...
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
It will likely be next week. Could be April 22 or April 23.
Eric (Bel Air )
Could Chris Johnson be a good fit in Baltimore and could the Ravens be a potential landing spot for CJ2K?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
I don't see it. They already have a running back with six years of wear and tear on him in Rice. The Ravens don't need another.
Ravenous128 (Columbia, MD)
Auto-update, JH. Get on it, buddy. ;)
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:36 PM)
It says auto-update is on for me.
Basil (Fells Point) [via mobile]
Which mid round RB fits the Ravens offensive scheme best?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:37 PM)
As far as mid-round running backs, the best fits are Washington's Bishop Sankey (third round) and Florida State's Devonta Freeman (fourth round).
Drew(PA) [via mobile]
Week 1, who will be at right tackle: Wagner? Reid? Early Draft Pick? Free Agent signed after draft?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:38 PM)
It looks like either a first-round pick or Rick Wagner.
Brian (MD)
What are you thoughts on us drafting Carlos Hyde? ...Andre Williams?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:40 PM)
Hyde is the top RB in the draft and he is a good fit for the Ravens' zone-blocking scheme. He will likely get drafted in the second round. The one red flag on Hyde is a three-game suspension last season after he allegedly assaulted a woman at a bar. Charges were later dropped, but this could give the Ravens some pause.
Josh (MD)
Haloti ngata hasn't been the same guy last 2-3 season yet he makes the most of any raven this season.Should the ravens try to restructure or realase him next year should we find a replacement?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:41 PM)
Ngata's contract will get addressed next year when he is in the final year of his deal. It's the same situation with Terrell Suggs this year.
Bryan (Maryland)
Hey JamisonGetting closer to the draft, what is your gut for the 17th pick? Ozzie should be very excited for where he is at with this deep draft. Will he stay put, trade up/down? Any updates or your thoughts on which position they are potentially going to pull the trigger on at 17?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:43 PM)
It really depends on who is there. The Ravens could be surprised if safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or tight end Eric Ebron falls to the bottom half of the first round. That's why it's hard to project beyond the top 10. A lot depends on what the other teams do ahead of the Ravens. As I said earlier, Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin would be a good bet at this point.
Oscar (Lubbock, TX)
(1) Do you see any possibility of Omar Brown manning the free safety spot? (2) If they don't draft a lineman early on, will they sign Eric Winston to play right tackle?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:44 PM)
1. No. 2. If they do, it won't happen until after the draft. If the Ravens were thinking about signing Winston, you would think they would've made contact with him already.
Chris (MD)
Is there any chance that Clinton Dix drops to the 17th pick? Seems to be the consensus best safety in the draft.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:45 PM)
He has to slip past the St. Louis Rams (No. 13), Chicago Bears (No. 14) and Dallas Cowboys (No. 16).
Corey (Baltimore)
Even with the signing of Steve Smith making WR no-longer a top priority is Mike Evans the guy to draft if he's there at 17?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:47 PM)
Definitely. Steve Smith could end up being just a one-year rental. Evans would be a long-term answer and has the potential to be a No. 1 target.
Basil (Fells Point) [via mobile]
Would the Ravens draft OT Lewan at 17 if he falls due to character concerns?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
I know there are character concerns, but the Ravens would be hard-pressed to pass him up if he's there at No. 17. Lewan is the third-best tackle in this draft. He solves a lot of problems for the Ravens.
Riker (Annapolis)
Any chance the Ravens trade back?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:49 PM)
There is a chance. But I think there is going to be someone sitting there at No. 17 that the Ravens will want to take.
Kevin fred,md [via mobile]
Who are the qurtar back prospects in the nfl draft picks the ravens are interested or hopeing to pick in the draft?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:51 PM)
They've had pre-draft visits with Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo, Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas and Ball State's Keith Wenning. I also see the Ravens having Georgia's Aaron Murray and Pittsburgh's Tom Savage on their radar.
Rob (Glen Allen, VA)
Do you think John Simon will be utilized almost exclusively as a special teams player this year, or do you think he will see any increased playing time behind Upshaw?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:52 PM)
Simon may get a little more playing time, but he will make his most impact on special teams.
Andrew (Ohio State)
Thoughts on why Ngata turned down an extension?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:53 PM)
I will touch on that tomorrow on the blog.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:54 PM)
Thanks for all of your good questions. We'll chat again next week at the same time. Hope you have a great rest of the week.
