AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning, gang! We've got 60 minutes of fantasy baseball chattage up ahead, so let's get right to it -- shall we? Second cup of coffee is in hand; who is up first?
Candy (Slippery Rock)
Hi AJ, would you rather have Alex Rios or Denard Span for ROS?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I'm not all that high on Span, but at least in his case, I'm pretty sure he'll be playing regularly. I'll go with him.
Last place in a keeper league, trade Desmond for Tulo?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
In a heartbeat. While Tulo is not likely to be moved in real life, given the surgery on the schedule... it's a low-risk fantasy move in your position.
Thought on Soler coming up? EK doesn't expect it; what about you?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I didn't expect Baez, so I won't rule anything out. However, I'm leaning to a no.
CarGo done? Safe to drop?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I'd imagine so. Hard to justify the Rockies playing him again.
d'Arnaud or Montero at C ROS? Montero has been a great value but seems like he has slowed down considerably.
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
As long as you don't mind the potential BA drag, I can see going with Travis.
Jon (Bozeman, MT)
AJ, I'm sitting in the last playoff spot with four weeks to go. I have Tulo, CarGo, McCutchen, and Encarnacion injured. Do I still try to win this year or trade non-keepers for draft picks and take my shot next year?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I don't think draft pick position matters all that much to be honest -- and you may not be this close again in 2015.
Had my pick of Wainy or Kluber in a trade. Picked Wainy. Did I mess up?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
That's like saying I had my choice of a $100 bill or $99 one-dollar bills. Both are fine options -- especially in the short-term. Hard to say you messed up, regardless of who does better ROS.
Deep AL Only. Flowers or Navarro at C ROS? Also, please rank/discuss W-Y. Chen, B.Norris, U.Jimenez, J.Guthrie, or J.Kelly at SP ROS? (Told you it was a deep league!) Thanks for taking the deep league questions too!
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Navarro at C. As for the SP, I like Chen the best of that group, and after that it really comes down to "season to taste" (i.e., personal preference).
Who do you like most the rest of the way - Chase Anderson, Kyle Hendricks or Collin McHugh?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I'd go with Chase here.
Thoughts on DeGroms injury?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Could have been a lot worse. Assuming he misses just the DL stint, and the Mets put him back on the mound, expect him to work every 5 days (barring a recurrence) until the end of the season.
Better keeper for 2015, Javier Baez or Bogaerts? Baez doesn't walk at all but Bogaerts hasn't been walking at all lately either. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Are you in a walks only league? Let the young kids swing! I'm going with Baez.
Hey, Hendricks or Gausman ROS?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Hendricks with the win!
Are you more comfortable with Rollins or Danny Santana at SS ROS? (RIP Tulo's MVP season)
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I'm not sure if comfortable is the exact word I'd use for either, but I think I'd go with Santana.
Do you like Kennys Vargas at all? Holding onto him and CJ Cron. Does either deserve a spot on a dynasty team?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
For this season, not sure Vargas gets enough PT to matter in the end. Roll the dice in dynasty? Sure, why not? Cron I like a little bit better in the long run.
Paul (St. Paul)
Will owners get ANYTHING out of David Wright this season?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
When he's hit, his teammates haven't... and vice versa. Still top 100 hitter in spite of it all, but yeah, a couple of HRs down the stretch would go a long way to making his owners less anxious.
Feel good about starting Lackey today? Last outing just a rough one?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I've never been a fantasy player who does the matchup thing with SP. All of them will have at least 3 starts that make you want to scream... small sample size and recency bias can make you pull pitchers who are about to have a 10-K, 0 ER gem. I start my top guys and leave them in.
Rank Kipnis, Dozier, Utley for ROS.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Chase is 1. I'll give Dozier edge over Kipnis.
Ron (San Diego)
Gyorko or Ackley ROS ?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Slight advantage to Ackley.
ROS NL only R.Liriano,M.Taylor , Dom Brown or Venable?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Give Rymer a shot. No real reason. See what I did there?
Not a fantasy question....but if you look at the numbers; Tim Hudson is pretty close to a HOFer, no?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Certainly the longevity and win totals help his case, but if I had a vote, the first question I'd ask myself is was this guy among the first players I thought about if I was to start a team. I don't think he ever really was.
Jay [via mobile]
Better Bailey replacement.. Wheeler, Stroman, or Odorizzi.
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
A lot of talk that no chance Kris Bryant gets the call, do you agree?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Inasmuch as you can trust when an exec says, "No chance Kris Bryant gets the call."
Bob (Chino Hills, CA)
Chase Headley going to turn it around in NY?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
He will hit better in NY, yes.
K.Correia worth an add in a depleted SP NL only h2h 10 teamer?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
I don't see the upside, really, apart from the increased win probability given the new team -- but could be better than what you've got.
What does Wily Peralta have to do to start getting some respect in the Fantasy Rankings universe?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
A couple of games without falling prey to the longball will help.
Need a replacement for Machado... Headley/Plouffe/Castellanos... Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I'm not looking to Trevor. Might give Chase the call, but it's close.
Better ROS deep league pitcher: Jimmy Nelson, Rubby De La Rosa or James Paxton?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I'd give the nod to Paxton.
In a 12 team 2 keeper league I traded Kershaw (I'm first in every pitching category other than saves and not making the playoffs) Ortiz and Kluber for McCutchen and Machado (the day its accepted both hit the DL) and everyone is up in arms over it. Oh well I didnt want to keep a pitcher even Kershaw
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
If you're still OK with the deal, I don't have any problem with it... it's a keeper league.
Danny (Cleveland) [via mobile]
ROS please choose 2 for a playoff run. Niese, Norris, Kendricks, Dickey, Vogelsong.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
I'm going with Vogelsong and Niese.
Does Darvish pitch again this year or do they shut him down in Texas?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Right now, the feeling is this is a 2-start injury. No reason for them not to pitch him once or twice if he's truly healthy. If there's any delay to his activation, though, expect him to miss the rest of the way.
Jason (Deer Park, NY)
Further to previous Kris Bryant questions: How much of the service clock arbitration effect a September call up? Seems to me his call up would go a long way to generate excitement for next year in Chi-town.
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
It counts -- but only for the amount of time he's there.... meaning, if he gets called up on September 1 and stays the whole month, he gets one month of service time added to his ledger. But if he's in the minors come Opening Day 2015, he's not suddenly at like 8 months.
Another deep league question: Best OF Dl stash: Wil Myers, AJ Pollock or Avisail Garcia?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Garcia for me.
Lackey was dropped in my league rather have him or Odorizzi ROS? points league
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Lackey for points leagues.
Matt (Cleveland, OH)
Erik Aybar was recently dropped in my league. I have Segura at SS. Would you drop Segura or the injured Neil Walker to add him?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Aybar > Segura? Yes.
Given Altuve's progression over the last couple years, how would you value him as a keeper relative to Tulo? I'm in the hunt and looking for a solid MI to fill in for Tulo...
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I am very high on Altuve, and when we did our ESPN Dynasty Draft two years ago, I had him higher than Tulo in terms of future value. That hasn't changed. I still think Tulo is a tad better for 2015 if healthy -- but not by a ton.
Looking for steals and don't want to hurt my obp. Do you think it is worth dropping crisp at this point for aoki? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Crisp's unreliability to play regularly is certainly a factor. I'll allow it.
B Hamilton in a recent slumpy-doo, sell for upcoming playoffs?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
In a H2H where SB matter, I'd keep him. All it takes is one hot week.
Carlos Santana (ohio)
What is my deal? I am either fire or ice. Who will i be ROS?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
More ice than fire, but there will be days.
Bailey replacements..can you rank? Colon, C. Young, Duffy, McHugh?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Colon 1st, Young last. Collin gets silver.
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
That's all the time I've got for today, gang. As always, I appreciate the questions. Until the next time -- please do check out "Yes It's Hot in Here" and treat your mascots well. I'm on Twitter (@ajmass) for those I didn't get to! Thanks, and have a great day!
