Chad Ford (1:06 PM)
Aloha everyone, thanks for coming to the chat today. We'll talk NBA all hour. Let's roll ...
Jason (Manhattan (NY))
Bummed to see Porzingis move up to Philly at 3 in the latest mock. Is there anyway he winds up in Orlando? Do you think the Magic are motivated enough to offer assets to move up to 3?
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
Sure. While I hear Philly likes him, I don't think it's a guarantee they take him. One, Lakers could take him at two, or the Sixers could end up taking Russell or Mudiay. In which case I think he would fall to Orlando. But if Porzingis is gone, Hezonja would be a great second choice for the Magic.
YerDa (Liverpool, UK)
The Knicks undoubtedly working out guys in the 8-14 range. Any idea on their price of moving back?
Chad Ford (1:08 PM)
They want a pick in that range plus a young veteran. They are trying to do a two for one. But only if Towns, Okafor and Russell are off the board at No. 4. I don't think they'd actually do a deal until draft night.
Any idea who the Wolves will go with #1? Seems like it could be anyone at this point
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
No, I think it will be Okafor or Towns. I think it's down to those two. Others have come into visit, but I get the strong sense it will be one of those guys.
Aron Kale (Los Angeles)
The more I read and see about Okafor, the more scared I am of drafting him - after what we just watched in the finals, seems borderline impossible to build around a poor defensive big and win. Am I missing something?
Lakers reportedly had Porzingis in for a private workout. Any chance they go this direction and not Okafor?
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
They were very impressed in the Vegas workout I've heard from multiple sources. I'm just not sure they have the courage to do it. I think they've been zeroing in on Towns (for sure if he's there) and either Okafor or Russell. But Porzingis is worth that pick. In fact, if I was drafting at No. 2, that's who I'd take if Towns was off the board.
Sam Hinkie (Philadelphia)
Information is limited and all over the place. But what's your gut feeling on how serious the problems with Joel Embiid's foot are?
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
No idea. Feel terrible for Embiid. Less so for the Sixers. They knew the risks when they took him.
Where are the Porzingis/Kirilenko comps coming from? They make no sense.
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
Moves like Kirilenko. Body is sort of like his. Excellent athlete. But offensively ... he's much more a mix between Dirk and Pau.
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
League has changed. And that scares some people. But Okafor is such an elite offensive player, I think he averages 20 ppg in the NBA. He's just too big and too skilled. He may end up being a liability defensively, but he'll command a double team every night. Obviously the league is going away from players like that -- but that's partly because there just aren't a lot of great bigs in the NBA these days. Okafor will force defense to adjust.
Pretty confused as to the WCS drop all the way to 11 in your latest mock. Is there a scout out there that doesn't see him as a future All-NBA defender? Shouldn't that certainty be enough to firmly plant him in the top 6-7?
Chad Ford (1:16 PM)
He's getting a strong look from the Knicks at 4, Magic at 5 and Kings at 6. However, after that the next few teams -- Nuggets, Pistons, Hornets, Heat -- he's not as big of a need as a wing that can shoot. That's why he slid. I know he worked out great in Charlotte and maybe they take him anyway at 9. But if Porzinigs goes 3, I think Magic take Hezonja at 5 and that leaves Mudiay there for the Kings at 6.
What do Pistons do at 8? Mario make it there? Too high for Stanley?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
Hezonja goes 5 to Magic, 7 to Denver or 8 to Pistons. If he and Justise Winslow are both off the board (and in my latest mock they are) I'm hearing strongly that the guy the Pistons really like is Wisconsin's Sam Dekker.
With your Mock 7.0 showing Mudiay going to Sacramento, could the Nuggets consider trading Lawson to the Kings for that pick to get Mudiay? Does the Malone hire show what the Nuggets draft plan will be?
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)
Nuggets have been trying to make that deal regardless, but so far they can't get Kings (or anyone else for that matter) to bite on Lawson.
Andrew (Fort Collins, CO)
Do you think Winslow can be a good NBA 3-point shooter?
Chad Ford (1:19 PM)
Yes. But I don't think that's his bread and butter. Jay Bilas thinks he'll be a Dwaye Wade sort of player. I see more Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. I think he may be a better shooter than both, but not an elite shooter.
Aron (Melbourne/Australia) [via mobile]
Just want to get an insight on your 3 top players in the current draft who may be stars either early or later on throughout their careers.
Chad Ford (1:20 PM)
My personal top 3? 1. Towns 2. Porzingis 3. Mudiay ... the Big Board (which is the consensus of NBA scouts and GMs) has 1. Towns 2. Russell 3. Okafor.
If the Celtics move up to Charlotte's spot @ 9, who would they be targeting?
Chad Ford (1:22 PM)
They're trying to move up. Charlotte is a great target as they could move back a few spots, get a shooter and another asset from the Celtics. I think Boston would love to get Cauley-Stein if he was there at 9. Or a wing like Hezonja or Winslow.
If Booker is there at 10, do the Heat take him over Johnson, Dekker, or Kaminsky?
Chad Ford (1:23 PM)
I don't think so. Keep hearing those 3: Stanley Johnson, Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky are the 3 targets for Miami
Francisco (Lima - Perú)
Could WCS fall for to the Pacers lap or you still think Larry Bird will end up drafting Cam Payne?
Chad Ford (1:24 PM)
He could if he gets past the Knicks at 4, the Magic at 5 and the Kings at 6 which is a real possibility. If he's not there, I think it will be either Cameron Payne, Myles Turner or Bobby Portis.
Do you have a sense of whether the Jazz are looking to move up? What are the odds of Stanley Johnson falling to them at 12?
Chad Ford (1:25 PM)
He could be there, though I know the Pistons at 8 and Heat at 10 and Pacers at 11 are all interested as well. Myles Turner and Trey Lyles are the other two I could see ending up there.
Sounds like the Suns like Knight more than Bledsoe. Any way they could use him and 13 to swap picks with the Knicks?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
I definitely think that could be an option. That's the sort of deal the Knicks would look at. But for cap reasons, would have to happen after the draft.
What's the latest on RJ Hunter and where he might end up?
Chad Ford (1:29 PM)
As high as 14 Thunder. As low as 23 to Blazers. Teams are all over the place on him.
christian(ottawa) [via mobile]
Iggy winning Finals MVP help RHJ stock?
Chad Ford (1:30 PM)
I think it would. There's a comp there. Winslow would be another one that comps well with Iguodala. I think Hollis-Jefferson's stock is already on the rise. Everyone knows he can't shoot, but he's been great in workouts otherwise. Thunder at 14, Celtics at 16, Bucks at 17, Raptors at 20 all real possibilities for him.
christian(ottawa) [via mobile]
I see you mention Rashad Vaughn a lot with the Raptors. Is he a good fit.
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Very good scorer. Can play both the one and the two. Better shooter than you think. He's still very young. He's been underrated. Vaughn could go in that same range as Hollis-Jefferson: 14 to Thunder, 16 to Celtics, 17 to Bucks, 20 to Raptors, 21 to Mavs.
Dan (Miami) [via mobile]
Who has the best career out of Oubre, Johnson and Dekker?
Chad Ford (1:32 PM)
Tough call. Like all three. Oubre has the most upside. Johnson the safest. Dekker somewhere in between.
Do you feel as strong about Porzingis as you did about Darko or other Euro busts? Not trying to be sarcastic or anything, just want to know how confident you are...
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
Yes, I was very high on Nikoloz Tskitishvili and Darko Milicic back in the day. Both busted. Could Porzinigs bust too? Yes. But so have a ton of American players over the years. One thing about Skita and Darko that I missed as a young reporter. Neither really loved the game. I think Porzingis does. Has a great work ethic. More skilled than either Skita or Darko. Has some body issues to workout. But I think he's going to be very, very good. I understand the skepticism given past busts. But it's unfair to put him in the Darko camp unless he was getting drafted by a team that was ready to play in the NBA finals, wasn't going to see minutes for years and didn't love the game anyway. None of that will likely apply to Porzingis. Bad fit, as much as anything, hurt Darko.
If the other PF prospects (Lyles, Portis, etc) are off the board would it be a reach for the wiz to take Looney or Wood? Do you think they might lean guard/wing in that case?
Chad Ford (1:37 PM)
Looney would be a great fit there actually and a steal at 19. Much more talent than that. Wood? I think he slides into the second round. At that point someone like Montrezl Harrell might make sense. I do think Lyles and Portis will be off the board before pick 19.
Aimun(Dallas) [via mobile]
Could Houston pass in Tyus Jones and could he fall to Dallas?
Chad Ford (1:38 PM)
Sure they could. But if Houston passes on him, will Dallas really want him? (Just kidding Mavs fans).
christian(ottawa) [via mobile]
Best Shooters in the draft are?
Chad Ford (1:41 PM)
Porzingis, Hezonja, Booker, Kaminsky, Hunter are my top 5. Maybe Karl Towns should be there too.
World Champ (Golden State)
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!Anyway time to think draft... we will likely need a backup SG or PF next season. I see Anthony Brown in your mock but who are other possible targets for us at pick #30?
Chad Ford (1:42 PM)
Yes you are. And you did it with draft picks. Curry, Thompson, Green and Barnes. You can build a champion through the draft. Gotta run off to do Sports Center everyone. Sorry to cut it short today.
