AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning everybody. It's another scorcher out there, so turn up the A.C. and pray for rain. We've got about an hour of chattage ahead, so let's get to it.
Who do you prefer at utility - Mike Cameron or Hinske? OPS is category and not avergage.
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I like Hinske a bit more right now, especially with Mike Cameron being so brutal at home.
Tom (Danbury, CT)
I have an OF spot open with Church on the DL. Who is the better option Shane Victorino or Jose Guillen?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
They're close in performance value, but considering the offensive power surrounding the Hawaiian, I'd go his way. More of a chance to drive in runs and get driven in, boosting the peripheral stats.
What do I do with Mike Napoli?!?!?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Ride the lightning. He's an all or nothing swinger... he'll go for a few weeks with nothing, then hit five HR in a 3-game set. But at the catcher spot, where the pickings are usually slim, that's not the worst option in the world to have.
Bill - Farmingdale, NY
I really want to trade Milton Bradley with the powerhouse offensive start he has had to the season but no one seems to be taking the bate. I have J.D. Drew prepared to take over the OF spot and am looking to improve SP or possible SS - any ideas?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Not a lot of believers in your league for a guy who has been a Top-10 player so far? Not surprising. I don't think he can keep this up either... but the real problem is that you can't MAKE someone want to trade for a guy even if it makes sense. I've been trying to get rid of Brandon Lyon in an experts leagues, b/c I'm last in saves, and only get back lopsided counteroffers for my Jake Peavy. It's nearly impossible in some leagues to get a deal done. You just have to keep plugging away.
I am getting a lot of offers for Nate McLouth right now and really am not sure how to evaluate him. Do you think he can really be this good for an entire season, or should I sell high now?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
When I did my June Rankings, I first ranked the players how they've done so far... I had Nate 8th overall hitter. Then I had to figure what he'd do going forward, and I couldn't put him higher than 62 overall. So, I guess I think when we look back over the season, we'll say, wow he turned into a Top-50 player! Nice! But I don't see a continued top-10 presence hereon out.
I have room to stash either Rich Hill(currently on my team ever since I wasted a high draft pick on him!) or Clay Buccholz. Which one is worth stashing?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Clay "don't call me Aiken" Buchholz. He's in the minors as a result of space issues, not performance. Whereas Hill is simply his own worst enemy right now.
Would you rather have Theriot at 2B or replace him with Cano (in a trade for Wang)?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
I'd stay with The Riot. Speeds about the same, Cano is a bit more power, but that average hasn't rebounded at all, and it's to the point where I don't think it's going to.
Please rank for the remainder of the season: Wandy Rodriguez, Jered Weaver, Randy Wolf, and Mike Mussina.
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Weaver, Wolf, Wandy, Mussina... when it comes to stat lines. But I think of the quartet, Weaver is the most volatile. He'll give you a shutout this start then 6 runs in 5 innings the next, while Wolf might give you two near-quality starts in a row. If you can pick and choose for Weaver, he's far and away the best option, but I think it's a very risky game to play. Safer pick would be Wolf.
Do you think Zach Greinke will return back to his early season form.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
I like Greinke, but I think Trey Hillman hasn't a clue how to use his pitchers properly. I think he'll rebound a bit, but I am concerned about misuse wearing him down as season goes on.
Carlos (Jersey City, NJ)
Hi AJ. what do you think of the Rangers' Eric Hurley, a former top prospect, making his debut on Thursday? What can we expect?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Hurley is kind of like Miller on the Marlins... he is a really good thrower... but not yet a pitcher. I think he'll have really good stuff which could get him a win in his first start if his location is good, but he'll need to learn how to place pitches a lot better if he's to have longterm success, dude.
Is Armando Galarraga a good pickup for the rest of the year? I'm thinking he'll have more value than David Weathers even though holds count in our league.
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I've been playing fantasy baseball for a very long time, and somehow that Weathers always ends up on my roster mid-season though I've never drafted him once. Armando is great add to a roster though, and the fact that he's 4-1 on the road leads me to think he's going to have a lot more impact due the # of IP he'll have than Weathers.
John Boy (Cincinnati)
Is Volquez a sell high candidate? I think i know he is, but everytime i see his wins and Ks i can't bare to trade him.
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
In a keeper league, you don't think twice about keeping Volquez. In a single-season league, if you have needs, the best players to trade are the rookie pitchers with huge potential, because they are also the most likely to encounter difficulties as the year goes on. Cueto and Kershaw and Volquez will always surge in value after a good start, so time the deal appropriately and you'll be OK.
In A keeper league is Headley and Ankiel enough for howard, guy with howard is in last place looking for minor leaguers to build....
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Make the offer and find out. I don't think it's nearly enough, but if he says yes, it's no longer your problem. Howard's having a down year, but still will reach 30 HR's. I would think he's exactly the kind of guy to build around, but if you can steal him for an unproven Headley and a "not sure he can keep it up" Ankiel then by all means, do.
Longoria or Reynolds rest of the year and why?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Longoria. The main reason is that he's the man in TB, even if he slumps a bit. Reynolds, even if he doesn't slump, could find Tracy eating into his time.
Justin (Islip, NY)
Do u get frustrated with some of these questions that u cant possibly answer...like who should i trade howard for? or is this enough for this player? How can u possibly know the answer to those when every league is different....sorry, no question, just a rant to maybe help u out a bit
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
LOL, Justin. It is true that there's no way to KNOW if a deal is going to be accepted without knowing full rosters, standings, and without even knowing, let alone having the ability to read the mind of, the other owner involved. It's even harder trying to explain to some people that, given the circumstances, it might be worth it to trade Webb for a role player who steals bases... but we always appreciate the questions, regardless.
Fernando (Pembroke Pines)
Who would you keep Conor Jackson or James Loney??
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I prefer Conor to Loney, although if I had a reasonable backup to James and could play him only at home, where he's a .340 hitter, I'd go that route.
Appreciate this question please! Are Swisher or Garko potentially better replacements at 1B/3B for the much-hyped yet unspectacular Alex Gordon? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I still like Gordon. OK, so the hype had you thinking he'd be hitting .390 like George Brett, and he's not.... If you're looking for more HR's take Swisher, but expect a hit in BA. Gordon will be a .290 hitter and still a better all-around stat boost.
Justin, I somewhat agree with you. I dont like it when the experts answer a trade question like "who should I target if I want to trade Mclouth", and then say the same thing every time: "that depends on your league". Just throw out a name to get us in the ballpark of the types of players would work. Is that so difficult?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Jim, the best way to get the answer you want though is to ask for the specific info you need. "Where would you rate McLouth in relation to other OF?" is a much different question than "I have McLouth but I really need help at shortstop due to injuries... who do you think is of similar value?"
Please Rank: Rickie Weeks, Robinson Cano, Alexi Casilla, Alexei Ramirez... Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Ramirez, Cano, Weeks, Casilla.
What do you make of CC? His past month has been good (except for his last start), I kept him last year and am unsure what to do with him. Ride him out and hope he returns to keeper form, or trade him at a little discount?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
I'm very concerned with CC. Usually when a pitcher struggles the way he has, I look to whether or not he's overworked, and he's not. He's just not pitching well. But I think you have to ride him out, even if it's stashing him on your bench because there's no way you're going to get appropriate value in the event he does turn it around.
Which player who was just drafted has the best chance to make a fantasy impact this year (pitcher and position player please)?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
I'd say none of them. It just doesn't work that way.
I have Chase Utley on my team and he's been great so far, I've had lots of trade offers. He's definately cooled off some but can he keep up even after the All-Star break? Is it smart to trade him now while his value is still very high?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Short answer...no. What could you possibly get in return that would be better?
Stephanie (Hartford, CT)
Good morning! Who would you prefer between McCann and Soto for the rest of this year, and the next five seasons? Thank you!
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
McCann for the rest of this season. Soto for the future, primarily b/c I can easily envision McCann moving to 3rd base in that time, where his relative value will diminish.
Nice to see Steph from Hartford getting all her questions answered...how bout some love for the rest of us!!!
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I'd ask you to lie down on the couch to discuss those issues, Dan, but I'm not licensed.
Suzanne (Oak Park, IL)
Would you deal Helton for Wang, given Wang?s current issues? I could then pick up Ryan Garko by dropping Andy Sonnanstine. So basically I could get Wang and Garko for Helton and Sonnanstine. What are your thoughts on this deal?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
It's not the worst deal you could make, but I'd rather be on the Sonnanstine/ Helton end. But I do think Wang can turn it around... I just worry about his level of run support remaining as high as it has been.
AJ HOLDS is a stat. I am on the bottom. Good strategy to wait for last month and pickup all hold pitchers with low WHIPS and try and gain some points? Ty
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Go into your league stats and track the weekly holds gap. If the difference between the most holds in a week and the middle of the pack isn't going to be enough to get you out of the cellar, then tank the category. If it is, then make a move. It's all about seeing whether its realistic to make a run, given the general spread in the category.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Time for only a few more, gang!
Will Victorino be full time now that Werth is back?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
I see no reason why he wouldn't be. Werth and Jenkins will be the usual platoon there.
Dave (Albany NY)
Verlander off to shaky start, Pedro an injury risk...best bet for rest of season??
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
I have more faith in Pedro's results, even in a limited number of starts before he gets hurt again than Verlander turning it around.
kyle (athens, ga)
my pitching is suckin so far, haren has been good, and halladay has been good. I've also got bedard, burnett, and oswalt. I'm going to be fine, right?
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
I'd go to battle with those guys any day of the week... track record-wise, you'd be hard pressed to get a better staff.
AJ Mass (12:04 PM)
Folks, that's all the time I have. Thanks for all of your questions. We'll be back soon with another chat, and be sure to check out the Commish Court and Playing With Numbers! Have a great day!
