Stephania Bell (11:04 AM)
Hello Sports Nation and Happy Friday! Lots of questions already so let's get to it...
Kyle (Grand Rapids, MI)
What is the status of DeAngelo Williams? Appreciate any help or advice.
Stephania Bell (11:06 AM)
Kyle: He will probably be listed as Q. No practice W or Th but Panthers still hoping he can play Sunday. Will be a gtd. It's not his knee btw, it's an ankle sprain suffered last week.
Mike S (CT)
Stephania, how likely is it that the San-chise can play next week despite suffering a knee sprain? Pretty ironic that it was news this week that Sanchez was being urged to slide, yet he hurts himself in a must-win game by again eschewing that option.
Stephania Bell (11:08 AM)
Mike: It will be interesting - now we're hearing a PCL sprain. If he were a receiver I'd say no way. Troy Polamalu has missed several weeks with a PCL sprain. Felix Jones missed a few. Now as a QB he may be able to, but he will be gimpy - and remember his other knee is not 100% - would not be surprised if he sits, but I'm sure he will try to do everything he can to go. Will be a 10 day window which helps his cause.
Derek (Marietta, PA)
What's the status on Julius Jones? Is Forsett going to be worth a start this week?
Stephania Bell (11:10 AM)
Derek: Lots of people sharing your concern. Jones has practiced fully this week and the team expressing optimism - but it could very well be a gtd. THey wanted to make sure he had adequate endurance and could tolerate back to back practices - so far, so good. But he also needs to be pain-free enough to tolerate contact, something that won't be tested in practice and that will likely force the gtd. Mora has already said that Forsett will continue to get work and he will play who's hot. I like Forsett better either way, but if Jones plays it does hurt his value.
Morning Steph! Always enjoy your chats, perhaps today is the day I get answered :>)League scoring: TD = 6pts, 20yds = 1ptWhat's up with B. Jacobs? Is his O-line not opening holes for him or is he hurting? He's been a bust this season, but he's got 90% of the load this week, right? Dare I start him or Caddy Williams as my flex this week? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (11:13 AM)
Scott: I don't think he's hurting - some people suggest he's running differently (not as hard) but I don't think I could say that. Either way, he has not been as effective - clearly. It is a big question whether Bradshaw will play although the Giants seem encouraged - but I would still expect the bulk of the work to go to Jacobs. But - don't really like the Dallas matchup. Might go with Caddy.
What is you're gut feeling on Desean Jackson, do you think he plays?
Stephania Bell (11:14 AM)
Travis: No, I think he sits. He has not practiced, he doesn't think he will go and he will likely be listed as doubtful.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Time for the 'Star' on the ESPN tree to help us with fantasy injuries. Ms. Bell, what have you heard regarding Visanthe Shiancoe for Sunday? I'm seeing rib injury and am concerned as both a Fantasy owner and Vikings fan. Thanks so much for your help today.
Stephania Bell (11:17 AM)
JB: No real danger of missing the game is what I'm hearing. He may be sore - but I think he plays and it could be a good matchup for him.
What are the chances for Warner playing this week, and will he play the full game or do they yank him early?
Stephania Bell (11:19 AM)
Patrick: Everything points to him playing - but based on what's happened in the last week - he will not guarantee that he will (which is appropriate). He will be a gtd and they will wait to be sure that he can go. IF he is cleared to go, there is no reason to yank him early. Either he can play - or he can't.
Ms. Bell, all three saints Rb's are banged up. Any news on them?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Dan: SOunds like all are expected to play this week. Bush said he felt he could have gone Monday but the medical staff wanted to give him an extra week. Not a bad idea. Sounds as if he is more likely to play this Sunday.
Jim (metro Detroit, MI)
Would you feel safe starting Celek with the thumb injury or go safe with Olsen? How much of a problem will the thumb be?
Stephania Bell (11:21 AM)
Jim: I think I feel safe with Celek. Now I know his performance last week made some people nervous - but he also was apprehensive about the condition of his thumb. He knows that he does not need surgery, they've had the week to practice taping it up for him and him testing it - and he's been practicing fully. I think he's better this weekend.
Hi stephania! Why does Calvin continue to be ranked so high? He looked really hobbled last Thursday, and didn't catch many balls he usually catches. I know he had an extra few days of rest, but it seems like this injury is really slowing him. Your thoughts?
Stephania Bell (11:23 AM)
Dave: he did look hobbled on Thanksgiving but that was because he suffered a setback in the Sunday game just four days earlier. I think the extra time off did help him (he acknowledged that) and he needed to literally rest to help himself. I'm not sure his knee is perfect, but remember, that Sunday before Thanksgiving he looked pretty good until his knees got taken out near the end of the game. So hopefully he's back to that mark.
Beth (South Dakota)
SJax play this wk? Play him or Benson?
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
Beth: He's questionable but he says he expects to play - and given that he played last week, I expect he does too. But Benson faces Detroit and we know he's playing. I take Benson.
Bruce (Las Vegas)
Will Brian Westbrook be worth having at any point for the rest of the season?
Stephania Bell (11:27 AM)
Bruce: If you have a deep league and can afford the bench spot, then why not hang on a little longer. Westbrook is going back to Pittsburgh for another check in another week or two, might return after that - but also might not. If you need depth elsewhere then I would drop him b/c his return this year is iffy at best.
I thought Turner had no shot of playing last week. Then they put him in and he got hurt again. Again, I think there's no way he's going to play this week, but then again maybe they're just crazy in ATL. Is there a shot that he plays?
Stephania Bell (11:28 AM)
Mike: You are speaking my thoughts. Atlanta still indicating that there's a shot that he plays - but really, no practice so far this week and hurt again last week. You have to think the prudent thing would be to rest him. Then again, that would have been prudent last week.
Stacy Lynn (Mich)
Hi Steph! First I want to thank-you for your great info, which has been essential for my weekly decisions. I, as a first time fantasy player, am the first in my league to clinch a playoff spot. (Boy are the guys ticked!) Anyway, I wonder if L. Coles will play this week against Det, they are saying something about hurt ribs. Also I have S. Smith North and M Crabtree. What do you think?
Stephania Bell (11:31 AM)
Stacy Lynn: Good for you! Wish I was having the same success...it sounds as if they think Coles will play - last week he was questionable with the same and he did play, although he didn't do much. I just like the Coles matchup the best.
Is Jonathan Stewart going to play?
Stephania Bell (11:31 AM)
Brendan: Yes, he's expected to. He might get more work if Williams' ankle limits him.
Any updates on Rothlisberger?
Stephania Bell (11:32 AM)
Chuck: Expected to play - and I'd be very surprised if that changes.
Hi Stephania, could you please explain turf toe to me. I don't understand how Stafford can play with a dislocated shoulder but Matty Ice can't play with a toe problem?
Stephania Bell (11:36 AM)
Stugots: OK. Stafford had a separated shoulder (not dislocated) so it's a sprain of the joint at the tip of the shoulder. Probably uncomfortable (as we saw on Thursday) although that should be better this week - but it's on his non-throwing arm and doesn't impact him as much. The big toe however is CRITICAL for all movement and this is one of the most painful injuries out there - a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe. All your body weight goes through that one little point every time you push off. He needs to set that right foot to make throws (and pushes off there) and any mobility is extremely hampered by this injury. Sounds like they were even worried he might need surgery which is why he went to Charlotte, so it's not minor.
What kind of progress is Clinton Portis making?
Stephania Bell (11:37 AM)
Justin: Very slow. My understanding is that some of the visual disturbances were lingering. He is scheduled to revisit with the Pittsburgh experts Monday so we should know more after that.
Do you think Wells could be in for an increased load due to Hightower's injury? Is Chris Jennings' shoulder ok and would he be a better play ag. SD than Wells ag. Minn?
Stephania Bell (11:42 AM)
Jem: Sounds like the Cardinals are not that concerned about Hightower's thumb, so I expect the workload to remain about the same. That said, I do like Jennings - yes, he's been limited by the shoulder - and Friday's practice will tell us a lot more, but he will be the go-to guy with Lewis out if he indeed goes - and I would favor him over Wells.
Warner Warning (NJ)
Just got a tweet from Rotoworld saying Murt Warner still experiencing blurriness . . . does this change his probable status?
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
He actually still has some sensitivity to light. Understandably he's concerned about the fact that this represents a residual symptom from the injury he sustained - and he's worried about taking another hit and what that could do. I think that this is the scenario: he is preparing as if he will play, but if he wakes up Sunday and has anything at all, he will not. It will literally be a gtd and since it's late, you just don't want to take that chance, unless you have Leinart (hmmm) or someone who can fill in on Monday night.
Follow up to roth...if he is playing...you think they adjust play calling at all to limit him getting knocked around...ie getting away from this increased passing they have gone to this year and last and getting back to more traditional steeler running the ball?
Stephania Bell (11:47 AM)
Chuck: It's a fair question - but I believe that at the end of the day, they go with whatever they think will work the best for their gameplan. They have hinted at trying to run the ball more and I believe that's what they will try to do - but not necessarily just as a measure of protecting Ben - although it's a nice byproduct.
Why have I seen nothing on the web regarding Jason Campbell's status? He blacks out, but appears good to go. Is this the Redskins/Campbell being nonchalant re concussions, or could he have blacked out and not gotten concussed?
Stephania Bell (11:50 AM)
Phil: It's as if you've read my mind. I am very puzzled by the lack of comment on Campbell - and he is NOT on the injury report. If he lost consciousness , he had a concussion. But we don't know all the conversations behind the scenes. Maybe he didn't actually black out, who knows. But I agree, puzzling and a bit concerning.
Rob (Willow Grove, PA)
Along the lines of Phil's questions. With no previous news at all, now J. Lewis has a MAJOR concussion and is put on the IR for the Browns. Does that sound like a fishy excuse to you considering the Brown's history?
Stephania Bell (11:52 AM)
Rob: No. I think it was very serious - and apparently there were some bothersome brain MRI images. Not sure exactly what that revealed (many MRIs do not reveal much after concussion). I think the Browns are notorious (Mangini) for not saying much about injuries, but when it became clear that this was a bad one, there was no reason to keep it quiet.
Ryan Grant - Is the shoulder a concern?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
Ari: Apparently not - Packers expect to have him Monday night and will likely limit him in practice to ensure that he's good to go.
Hi Stephania. IDP question. What do you know about Eric Weddle's injury? How long do you think he may be out? Thanks for all the help.
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Philip: He has a sprained MCL and will likely miss a couple weeks. The Chargers are hopeful that they will get him back in Week 15.
I heard today that P Thomas didn't practice yesterday and may have some wrist issues; any word?
Stephania Bell (11:56 AM)
Joe: So far, not a big concern but with them playing Monday night they are resting their guys a little deeper into the week. We should know more after Friday practice.
Peterson is good to go right?
Stephania Bell (11:56 AM)
Stephania, Sims-Walker looks like a go, yes?
Stephania Bell (11:56 AM)
Mark: Yes - back to full practice yesterday. Expect him to play.
Is witten good to go this week?
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Tom: Yes. In better shape this week than before T-giving and he had a great game then.
dan (in front on my computer)
Hi Stephania, which banged up TE has the best chance at success this week? Shiancoe or Winslow II?
Stephania Bell (11:58 AM)
Dan: assuming he's good to go by Sunday night, which I think he will be, Shiancoe is my pick.
Hi Stephania, I need some trade advise: Prepping for the playoffs (wks 14-16): I get Warner, Hightower, and Boldin. Give up Favre (I also have Peyton), Forte and Smith South. Worry about concussions, thumbs and ankles or go for it?
Stephania Bell (12:00 PM)
Geoff: I just wouldn't do it - Boldin depends on Warner and although he's close to being ready to play -there is so much uncertainty with concussions that there are no guarantees. Favre is the hottest QB right now fantasy-wise - I would not give that up. Forte drags you down but I still like Smith with Moore throwing to him.
Steven Jackson's back concerns me. Is he going to play? I have Jamaal Charles as my back up...
Stephania Bell (12:02 PM)
Cole: Well, he's concerned about the cold- and it's possible that the cold limits him - but I just can't imagine sitting him if he plays. Even though Charles has been hot lately.
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
OK everyone - thank you so much for coming to the Friday chat. We'll be back here Sunday morning and I will have an updated injury blog on Saturday for you. Good luck in Week 13!
